Porta, M. & Loureiro, A. (2012). Ph.D. Methodology, Procedures and Behaviour. Workshop dinamizado na 8th Joint Summer School on Technology Enhanced Learning 2012 - 21 Maio de 2012, Estoril, Portugal - uma iniciativa da STELLAR Network of Excellence in Technology Enhanced Learning and European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning (EATEL).
2. Ph.D. Methodology, Procedures and Behavior
INTRODUCTION
This workshop intends to answer to some of the demands from previous summer
schools in which students pointed out the need to understand general procedures of:
· Writing a thesis related to TEL;
· Timing and constraints to finish their Ph.D.;
· How to proceed with “the writing and the requisites” after finishing investigating;
· What students need to do in order to conclude their Ph.D.?
· What is the correct way to react, if things run differently from what was planned?
OUTCOME
At the end of this workshop the student will have a clear idea of different facts about the
procedure to conclude a Ph.D. work, also some timing schedule and a preliminary
proposition of the index of their own thesis.

4. Despite of the current development of TEL in the education sector and
supported by Klamma et al.:
“It is extremely challenging to get an overview of the state-of-the-art in
technology enhanced learning in Europe. Rapid technological and pedagogical
innovations, constantly changing markets, a vivid number of small and medium
enterprises, complex policy processes, ongoing political and societal debates on
the pros and cons of technology enhanced leaning, combined with many
languages and different cultures, make it almost impossible for people to be
informed” (2006, p.242)
5. Ph.D. Methodology, Procedures and Behavior
Choosing a Ph.D. subject
on TEL
What is TEL?
According to Tchounikine et al.:
“Technology-enhanced learning (TEL) is a research arena where different
disciplines such as computer science, education, psychology, philosophy, pedagogy
and communication intersect” (2009, p.275)
Recently, Balacheff (2011) affirmed that:
“TEL is the place where disciplines collaborate with the possibility of creating
original models, concepts, methods and may be stimulating the emergence of new
theories”.
6. Ph.D. Methodology, Procedures and Behavior
Ph.D., Research Work,
Investigation and Thesis
A Ph.D. concerns the preparation of a professional after a Masters
degree, in which the student is expected to conclude a research or
investigation. By conclude, we mean: a) selecting a subject, 2) including
in a state of the art everything that has been said about the same or
related subjects, 3) provide a contribution related to that subject. As a
final project report, a thesis is redacted and the subject is approved by a
jury.
Because of this, the originality of the contribution must be the pillar
of the research work; hence, the objective of the investigation should be
clear from the very beginning.
