How effective is the combination of music video and ancillary products
1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary task?
2. The Aim
•
The aim of this task was to create 3 products – a
music video, a digipak and a magazine advert that
worked well together to promote my artist by
establishing a uniting link between the three
products.
•
I spent a lot of time researching into the products
that belong to the same genre I picked so I could
make decisions on how to create the products so
they would look professional and believable and
would appeal to the target audience.
3. Ancillary Products
•
For the digipak cover, I chose have my
artist to be sat down against a tree in
grass with her guitar. This is to
symbolise the country roots of her
music and the naturist aspects of it.
• I chose to have my artist wear a loose
spotty dress with frequent red spots
on it, this gives the artist an innocent
portrayal and the red spots link in
with my frequent use of the colour
red throughout my products.
4. Ancillary Products
•
For the inner booklet page and spine of my
digipak, I again used grass and outside as my
location to carry on with the nature theme that
links to the artist’s country music roots.
•
I have used an image of a couple holding hands
as this connotes love and relationships which is
the topic of the track.
•
I have inserted lyrics of the track to appeal to the
audience as they are recognisable to them, I
chose to use the colour white for this to act as a
contrast against the black sleeve of one of the
couple.
•
I have again incorporated the colour red at the
bottom of the booklet page with the use of a link
for the audience to explore the artist more. I
have also used red for the font on the spine to
continue on the recurring them and it contrasts
well against the grass and even matches the
colour of the record label’s logo.
5. Ancillary Products
• For the CD disc, I used an image of the
artist’s mouth. The use of lips connotes
femininity and the red lipstick that the artist
is wearing again adds to the recurring colour
of red.
• I added a copyright logo at the bottom of
the disc to make it look more believable and
professional, I again used the colour red for
the font of this to carry on the symbol red.
• The reason I chose red is because it
connotes love and passion which is a main
topic of the track itself.
6. Ancillary Products
•
For the back page of my digipak I have
used an image of the artist stood on a
hill in the sun with her guitar leant
against her. The imagery of the grass
and sky with the sun shining on the
artist again connotes the idea of
nature.
•
For the track list and copyright section
and website link I have again used the
colour red which shows continuity
throughout my digipak.
•
I have added a barcode, record label
logos and a copyright notice to make
the page look more realistic.
7. Ancillary Products
•
On my magazine advert, I have used
the image from my digipak front
page to provide a link between it and
the advert.
•
I have used a bold, large and red font
to show the artist’s name and the
title of the CD to catch the
audience’s eye and continues on
with the red symbolism.
•
I added quotes from critics on the
image to make the advert look more
believable, I used white for this to
provide a contrast against the
background and because I have used
white before.
•
I have also used the colour black on
the advert to contrast against the
white background on the bottom of
the advert so it is easy to read and
clear to see.
8. Video - Representation
•
One thing that I have tried to keep the
same between the ancillary products and
the video is the innocent, youthful
appearance of the actress both through
her clothing and acting through body
language and facial expressions. Here she
is wearing a modest dress and is behaving
like a regular performer on this stage –
there is no voyeurism like Andrew
Goodwin includes in his conventions of
music videos and Laura Mulvey talks
about in her ‘male gaze’ theory.
•
I wanted the video to happy, feel-good
theme to it so my actress’s facial
expressions portray her to be constantly
happy such as the close up here, she is
smiling whilst performing.
9. Video - Mise-en-scene
•
With the mise-en-scene of my video, I have tried
to appeal to my target audience of teenage girls
by showing locations and objects that they
would commonly see and can relate to. An
example is the main location of my video, a
normal home. With the majority of the footage
being filmed in a stereotypical girl’s bedroom.
•
The clothing of both my actors are that of
normal teenagers, this was important to me to
keep the story of a normal teenage relationship
believable.
•
Throughout the video I try to show items that
connote a stereotypical teenage girl such as
candles, make up and hair products being able
to be seen in the background of several shots
and the inclusion of the girly, pink wallpaper in
the bedroom as one of my main backgrounds
for the performance shots.
•
The lighting of this video is usually natural
daylight as it was bright and sunny the day I
filmed, this is to carry on with the happy, feel-
good theme that I wanted to achieve with this
video. The only lighting I have used was during
the green screen aspects of the video so my
actress can be seen clearly.
10. Video - Shots
•
Throughout my video I have tried to
use a range of different shot types to
add to the verisimilitude of the video
and to keep the video interesting for
the audience. Examples of shots I
have used are: long shots, mid shots,
close up, over the shoulder shots,
extreme close ups, zooming and
panning.
•
A few times during the video I have
edited shots to the beat of the track,
an example being during the chorus
“stay, stay, stay” this is the give the
video an original aspect and to also
include one of Goodwin’s key music
video conventions.
11. •
Overall I think that both my video and
ancillary products came out well as they came
out the way I wanted them too and give off
the theme and message that I wanted them
to.
•
I think that my ancillary products do a really
good job of advertising the video and I think
that the combination of both the ancillary
products with the video do a great job of
promoting and representing the artist in the
way that I wanted to in order to appeal to my
target audience.
