Senator Elections
● The USC Staff Senate serves as an open forum
to facilitate communication and collaboration
among university staff members.
● It also serves as an advisory committee to the
university president, adding an essential voice to
strategic conversations and decisions that support
the goals of the institution.
What is Staff Senate?
●The members of the Staff Senate serve as a voice for the
campus community.
● Staff Senate acts as a change agent and brings interests
and concerns before the University administration.
● Participation in Staff Senate gives staff members an
opportunity to promote unity and a sense of community and
to network with fellow colleagues while providing service
through committees and service projects.
What does Staff Senate do for me?
● Any permanent USC full-time, or part-time, and
research grant position employees who have been
employed for a minimum of one year.
● Any member of the staff may vote to elect staff
senators to hold office in Staff Senate.
Who can serve as a Staff Senator?
● Staff Senate meets once a month for approximately 1.5 hours.
● Senators are asked to serve on one or two Staff Senate
committees and are encouraged to serve as a communication
link between the Senate and those they represent in their
unit/department/division.
● Individuals should expect that they will need to devote between
3-5 hours per month serving as a Senator.
How much time commitment is expected?
Staff Senate is in its second year since inception.
Here is a very condensed list (only highlights) of Staff Senate
accomplishments including the following:
• Serve on the University's Policy Advisory Committee (Office of the Provost)
• Serve on the President's Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion.
• Staff representation on University leadership search committees (college
dean positions and the presidential candidate panel).
What has the USC Staff Senate done/achieved
in the past?
More Staff Senate accomplishments includes the following:
• Staff Senate members are included on the President's Executive
Committee, the Investiture Committee, and senators are invited to
participate in University Commencement exercises.
• Were instrumental in the development of an Ombudsperson position to be
dedicated to University staff.
• Volunteered and supported, the Gamecock Pantry, by donating over 1,000
items.
What has the USC Staff Senate done/achieved
in the past?
• The level of your accomplishments depends on how much time and effort
you want to dedicate to the role.
• Senators serve on a variety of committees and the accomplishments within
those committee varies greatly. Some committees have logistical tasks to
complete to help the senate body function well.
• Not all committees are meeting with university leadership to discuss issues
that affect staff members on our campus.
Achievements as a Senator depends on YOU
Senators representing the Division of Student Affairs and Academic
Support represent the ENTIRE University and specifically the ENTIRE
division, but will serve as the main contact person for staff members
with a group of offices/units within the division (some may not be from
your specific department).

All division employees are eligible to nominate their colleagues and to be nominated for awards themselves.

  • 8. ● The USC Staff Senate serves as an open forum to facilitate communication and collaboration among university staff members. ● It also serves as an advisory committee to the university president, adding an essential voice to strategic conversations and decisions that support the goals of the institution. What is Staff Senate?
  • 9. ●The members of the Staff Senate serve as a voice for the campus community. ● Staff Senate acts as a change agent and brings interests and concerns before the University administration. ● Participation in Staff Senate gives staff members an opportunity to promote unity and a sense of community and to network with fellow colleagues while providing service through committees and service projects. What does Staff Senate do for me?
  • 10. ● Any permanent USC full-time, or part-time, and research grant position employees who have been employed for a minimum of one year. ● Any member of the staff may vote to elect staff senators to hold office in Staff Senate. Who can serve as a Staff Senator?
  • 11. ● Staff Senate meets once a month for approximately 1.5 hours. ● Senators are asked to serve on one or two Staff Senate committees and are encouraged to serve as a communication link between the Senate and those they represent in their unit/department/division. ● Individuals should expect that they will need to devote between 3-5 hours per month serving as a Senator. How much time commitment is expected?
  • 12. Staff Senate is in its second year since inception. Here is a very condensed list (only highlights) of Staff Senate accomplishments including the following: • Serve on the University's Policy Advisory Committee (Office of the Provost) • Serve on the President's Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. • Staff representation on University leadership search committees (college dean positions and the presidential candidate panel). What has the USC Staff Senate done/achieved in the past?

More Staff Senate accomplishments includes the following: • Staff Senate members are included on the President's Executive Committee, the Investiture Committee, and senators are invited to participate in University Commencement exercises. • Were instrumental in the development of an Ombudsperson position to be dedicated to University staff. • Volunteered and supported, the Gamecock Pantry, by donating over 1,000 items. What has the USC Staff Senate done/achieved in the past?
  • 14. • The level of your accomplishments depends on how much time and effort you want to dedicate to the role. • Senators serve on a variety of committees and the accomplishments within those committee varies greatly. Some committees have logistical tasks to complete to help the senate body function well. • Not all committees are meeting with university leadership to discuss issues that affect staff members on our campus. Achievements as a Senator depends on YOU

Senators representing the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support represent the ENTIRE University and specifically the ENTIRE division, but will serve as the main contact person for staff members with a group of offices/units within the division (some may not be from your specific department).
