• Health Informatics is a relatively new profession in the health industry
• Emerged in the 1960’s when computer technology became complex
enough to analyze big data.
• First used by The American Society for Testing and Materials to record
medical records and secure patient information
• Department of Medical Informatics introduced at the University of Utah
in 1968
• In the 1970’s Bioinformatics was first introduced as a subspecialty
• In the late 1970’s health informatics started to integrate into
government systems and larger companies for the use of patient
registration, orders, observations, discharge, and insurance claims
