Definitions
 ash cloud - an ash cloud is the cloud of ash that
forms in the air after some volcanic eruptions.
 conduit - a conduit is a passage through which
magma (molten rock) flows in a volcano.
 crust - the crust is Earth's outermost, rocky layer.
 lava - lava is molten rock; it usually comes out of
    erupting volcanoes.
 magma chamber - a magma chamber contains
magma (molten rock) deep within the Earth's
crust.side vent - a side vent is a vent in the side of a
    volcano.
 vent - a vent is an opening in the Earth's surface
    through which volcanic materials erupt.
What is a volcano?
               A volcano is a vent
                or 'chimney' that
                connects molten
                rock (magma) from
                within the Earth’s
                crust to the Earth's
                surface.
               The volcano includes
                the surrounding
                cone of erupted
                material.
3 Types of Volcanoes
 Shield Volcanoes

 Cinder Cone Volcanoes

 Composite Volcanoes

 These volcanoes get their name b y the
way they are shaped and what they are
    made of.
Shield Volcanoes
                    Are built almost
                     entirely of fluid
                     lava flows.
                    Flow after flow
                     pours out all
                     directions in this
                     volcano.
                    The Hawaiian
                     Island are
                     composed of
                     chains of these
                     volcanoes.
Take a look at this Shield
Volcano!
Cinder Cone Volcanoes
                Simplest types of
                 volcano.
                Have a bowl
                 shaped crater at the
                 top and rarely rise
                 more than a
                 thousand feet or so
                 above their
                 surroundings.
                Many are found in
                 western North
                 America.
Take a look at this Cinder Cone
Volcano!
Composite Cone Volcanoes
              Develop from
               repeated explosive
               and non explosive
               eruptions.
              These volcanoes are
               the largest !
              St. Augustine in
               Alaska is an
               example of
               composite cone.
Look at this Composite
Volcano!
How Volcanoes Erupt!
Interesting Facts
 Indonesia has the most active volcanoes in the
    world.
 The word volcano comes from an ancient god
    named Vulcan.
 Mars has the largest volcano solar system.
 There are over 1900 active volcanoes on
    Earth
 Mauna kea is the tallest volcano in the world.
 Volcanoes are on land and in sea.
 Volcanic eruptions feature ash, rock, gases,
    and lava!
What to think about…
 Vocabulary words
