- Welcome. The education field has been bombarded to include the latest technology into the classroom. School boards are constantly trying to determine if this is the best use of money that will have a positive impact on student learning. Several researchers agree that education does have a positive impact on education.
- The five main areas of my research indicate that technology does increase student engagement, improves student content learning and higher level thinking as well as prepares students for the workforce. Finally, my research showed that to maximize the impact of technology, all educators must have a solid training and understanding of the technology. Let’s take a closer look at each of these components.
- In a high school history class case study, the teacher used a video game to teach about WWII. The students revealed in interviews that: they enjoyed the lesson plan, they were able to answer several questions about the project and about WWII, and they were even discussing the topic outside of class at lunch,The same history class case study found that the room became student centered as opposed to teacher centered. The students owned and lead their learning. Students learn much more when they are engaged learners and are guiding their learning versus being a passenger to it.Damian Bebell and Laura M. O’Dwyer found consistently in reports on 1:1 initiatives that students reported more enjoyment in the class. If students are enjoying the class while still receiving the information it will translate to greater achievements.
- Reports reveal that for at-risk students who participate in after school programs, they learn about social interaction and increased their vocabulary through educational video games on computers.A review of literature written by Antionette Harvey-Woodall also found that technology helped teachers reach students of various background and motivate students and engage leading to increased achievement.
- In order to reach AYP and prepare our students for college, we need to teach them more, have them manipulate the information and apply it to real life situations all within the school year. The task seems daunting and too much, yet many schools that have integrated technology have done this very task. The task begins by improving the content students are able to maintain.New Hampshire’s Brewster Academy tracked SAT-1 over 8 years and found their students with integrated technology scored an average of 94 more points.In addition, West Virginia found that their students in integrated technology rooms had higher test scores for reading and math.CARET reported that English and social studies students completing a multimedia project had higher “research skills, ability to apply learning to real-world, organization skills, and interest in the content.”Numerous more studies and data could be presented but it would reinforce the message that technology can improve what students retain in addition to keeping them engaged in the material.
- Once students have increased the amount of information they are able retain it is time to teach them to manipulate the information. Colleges are becoming more competitive every year, in order for our students to make the cut and even receive scholarships; they must be able to think for themselves. Integrated technology is proving itself in this area.Higher Level thinking includes synthesis and analysis.Many programs exist that require students to solve a problem develop this skill.Center for Applied Special Technology found students with access to computers did better on projects than those without the technology.
- Higher Order Thinking Skills program found students in grade 4-7 “achieved twice the national average gains on reading and math test scores.”These students were disadvantaged students as well.Also note these students improved their “reading comprehension, metacognition, writing, components of IQ, transfer to novel tasks, and grade point average.”
- We also owe it to our students that join the workforce out of high school to prepare them for it. Many programs used in an integrated technology classroom will translate to the workforce, allowing our students to succeed. As you can see in this job application for the Fargo Park District, they are interested in what job applicants have learned. This job application is completed by those seeking minimum wage jobs and more. If our students can list the technology they have amassed, it will put them above the rest seeking jobs while in high school, while in college and much more.Many jobs ask if students can use word processors and spreadsheets. A growing number of jobs utilize technology in some way, schools need to help prepare these students
- Numerous studies reveal benefits for students just merely using technology, but many more articles point out the support and training needed for teachers to maximize technology. We would hate to spend the money without having some assurance of results. The data shows that proper training of teachers at already built in professional development days will have a significant impact on the positive impact on student learning.Across the board, teachers, principal, district administration, everyone must participate in developing the agenda for the technology. O’Dwyer found in their research that some school reported little gains with technology but they also have poor implementation of the technology.Schools that excelled trained their teachers, provided support and continued training.Schools that had teacher buy in to the program also reported increased success.Professional development. Teacher training is one of the most important elements in a successful technology effort. If teachers do not have the understanding or the skills to use technology, then technology integration will have little impact. Technology is well-supported both in terms of fiscal resources (money allocated to buy materials and equipment) and human resources (people allocated to support users and equipment).
- Technology goals should be developed to reinforce curriculum. Technology should not become an extra unit teachers add to their courses. The technology should reinforce and enhance the curriculum.As with a new things, teachers need time and training to be sufficiently comfortable with using technology tools or they simply won’t use that technology. They need to use these technologicaltools as a natural and welcomed extension of their teaching.Professional development days need to focus on collaboration between teachers to maximize lesson development. Teachers need to have time to share what has worked and what has not worked with other teachers in their school and their departments.Thank you for your time and I hope it is as clear to you as it is to me that we need to efficiently and urgently implement technology into our classrooms.
