Color and lighting
• I have decided that I am going to shoot the film in black and
white. The reasons being because you don’t get any pixels
when ever you are shooting in dark areas and no matter how
bright the lighting, I can’t get rid of the pixels you see when
ever I film in colour. I plan to use some dark lighting to create a
tense atmosphere but I can’t do it with colour when shooting
with a DSLR because its hard to get rid of the pixels.
Something I wont have to deal with when you switch the picture
into black and white. Another reason I’m shooting in black and
white is because I feel the it manipulates vibrant and normal
colours into a look that’s creepy and unsettling. By removing
the colours it creates a juxtaposition from a look that’s normal
to borderline scary. I plan to use a some lighting tricks hopefully
using only the house lights but they might also require the use
of a single light panel if I can’t get the lighting to where I want it
to be.
Color and lighting examples
Mise-En-Sense
• Because I’m shooting in black and white, mise-en-sense
is probably not going to be relevant as its something that
people wont pick up on because the colors will be muted.
However I might include some mise-en-sense in the
costume design for my main character that might prove to
be relevant with the theme of the film. Even though
people might not pick up on it, It would be a nice subtle
detail to add to show that I have put thought in the tiniest
details
Key Moments in the film
• One of the defining features in the technical aspects in my
film will be the use of hard cuts which are transitions from
the protagonists head back to reality. These will happen
for two or three times when ever the criminal in his head
will jump him or stab him and before you see the knife
fully penetrate his body it will abruptly cut back to where
we where in the beginning with the protagonist standing
by the front garden contemplating about what he should
do with the situation. These scenes are meant to caught
the audience of guard and reveal that what they saw
wasn’t real. These scenes work as visual tricks to the
audience but I must keep the use of them to a minimum
otherwise it will get repetitive very quickly.

Production Group Info
• Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is suggested

about the shoot.
Location information
• Information and images of your location[s] for filming
• You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including camera,
equipment and cast/crew layouts]
• Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
• Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
Location information
• I am going to be shooting the film in the front yard of my house 31 Belman walk as well as my
kitchen. The film is very small scaled with and my house is the only location in the film. Because
this is my house it makes things very easy for me because I don’t have to sign any contracts or
pay to film in the location I have chosen. The only people I have to consult before filming is my
family and because we are very close, doing that is very easy. My house has a corridor once
you enter from the front door and I’m going to use that as a location for my tracking shot that
comes in the third act of the film. Tracking shots are usually done in corridors so it makes it
ideal to do the shot in that part of my house. I don’t have a plan b location but I don’t think I
need one because its my house and like I said I don’t need to write any contracts or worry about
not being able to film. One of the issues is that there is a construction site that luckily is inactive
on weekends which is when I intend to do the shoot. However the neighborhood could still get
potentially noisy with all the residents that live there. I intend to overcome this issue by going to
a quiet location and recoding some background audio to play over the footage thus drowning
out the noise in the recorded footage.
Risk Assessment
Risk Solution
The knife prop I use might be too
sharp.
Do research of how to handle it prior
the shoot. Make sure it doesn't
penetrate the body
The Tripod I use doesn't work or
breaks
Use the replacement one I have in
my house. Because I have 2 it will be
easier then cancelling the shoot
Contingency Planning
• Things go wrong
• Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
• You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
• Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
Contingency Plan
What could go wrong? What are the solutions
Equipment including camera, tripod,
charger doesn't work as well as it
should
I have some replacements to use at

Production Schedule
• Provide an outline of what you will do on which days during production
• Start of production:
• Explain the shooting process by handing out a shot list to my cast/crew members giving them an idea of
how the film will be made and structured. Make sure all the props and equipment are in order then get
started. We will start at half 10 in the morning.
• Filming the first scene:
• Will be filming in chronological order so we will start in the front entrance of the house and will work around
the different angles in the first scene.
• The second scene:
• This part of the film will be shot in my neighborhood street just down the hill of my house up close followed
by the tracking shot following our protagonist to the front garden.
• The third scene/second act:
• The rest of the shoot will be done in this one location in my front yard and the inside of my house. We will
make kitchen messy for set purposes to show the damage the criminal has done. There will be a point at
the shoot where I change position from behind the camera to being in front of the camera where I play the
thug who stabs the main character. To make the shoot a lot smoother I will instead film the scenes of the
protagonist and the criminal separately by filming the suspenseful moments where the protagonist walks
into the house and then filming the reveal of the burglar after wards instead of filming them in the same
way the scenes are structured in the final product.
• The third/Final Act.
• After a short lunch break we will stage the climax where the criminal takes the situation in his hands and
takes out the hammer, walks in and hits the criminal with the hammer before hitting him repeatedly multiple
times. We might even stage the stabbing scenes as well just to be on the safe side. The film ends with the
same scene we started with. I might shoot the first and last scene back to back just to make the shoot
smoother.

Call Sheets
Clearance and Permissions
• I don’t need to sign any clearance and permissions slips
for my locations because I am filming in my house and my
neighborhood and not in any public place such as a
restaurant or a business area, locations that don’t require
a contract to sign from me or the client. At best I need to
ask permission from my mother or neighbors who we are
good terms on so singing one will not be necessary.
SECTION 3
Footage log
This is the first shot from my film taken from the edit from premiere pro. While the set
up and placement of the shot is how I envisioned it, I made the mistake of setting the
shot in the wrong frame rate making the shot look and feel like a soap then a film. I was
able to fix this issue when we where done filming the scene. Worse still the edit
softwhere premiere pro could only accept this shot in the aspect ratio you are seeing
now and when I could get it to cover the screen the resolution was completely off. So
unfortunately I have to re shoot this scene with the right frame rate which shouldn't be
too hard because its only two shots that I have to recreate.
When filming the first shot of the film, I was originally going to have the shot zoom
out from the close up to the wide shot from the door frame but when I attempt to
do the shot during the shoot, the lenses where jolty and there was no way I could
move the lenses in a smooth and seamless way so instead I’ve decided that I’m
going to cut out the parts of the shot where I move the lenses from the close up to
the wide shot and have it cut from the close up to the wider shot of the protagonist
standing by the door. That way the shot is a lot more effective to the audience
instead of the shot being awkward and the audience being taken out of the film
and ruining the tone and atmosphere I’m trying to create.
I have left a gap in between one clip to the next because one or two
scenes need to be re shot along with the first scene of the film where
the protagonist is standing by the door. This clip is meant to be the end
where he is standing by the same spot bookending the whole film. The
shots that where meant to fill that gap is a shot of his watch showing
the time as the shot before is him looking down to stare at his watch. I
need to re shot it because much like the first two clips I filmed them in
the wrong frame rate. One that is not ideal to use when making a film.
SECTION 4
Edit process log
The shots that I ended up abandoning where shots MVI_9951 to MVI_9964 mainly because
those where the shots that s filmed in the wrong frame rate so those shots would look
rubbish if I released them because of the small aspect ratio and messy resolution. The shots
after that point I ended up using for my final film because I filmed them in the right settings
and the right frame rate. Other shots I ended up abandoning was because of the noise you
can hear from the neighbors in my street as well as the camera noise and there wasn’t
anyway I could get rid of the noise so the shots I went with where ones where the noise
generated from the neighbors was no where to be heard as well as the camera noise. This
is most prominent from shots 9970 to 9978. That entire part was cut out because those
where different attempts at the same shot that I ended up abandoning because because of
the wind noise, camera noise and pedestrian noise ruined an otherwise good shot and It
Abandoned shots
Start of post production
This is at the start of the edit process and I have downloaded a few clips on to the edit and I
have used the mark in and mark out tools to choose what parts of the clip I want to add in
the final film. I’m observing the footage and I have found out that the footage wont work in
the final film because the resolution is off when you set it on full screen because I filmed the
first shot in the wrong frame rate but I changed it after filming that shot but I’m goanna re
shoot that first shot but only in the right frame rate. Another problem is that the first shots
are too short and I feel they needed to be longer to set up the mood and atmosphere
instead of starting it out so quickly.
Middle of post production
I’m installing the clips in the order I want the film to play out and I have found
out that I need to re shoot another shot because I lost one shot where the
protagonist is starring at his phone to call the police only to look at up to the
shot you are looking at now where the criminal is starring right at him so I’m
going to re shoot that shot and fill that gap in the edit before continuing with
completing it all.
Middle of post production
These 2 shots are in sequence with each other and as you can see the lighting is
a little different. I was originally going to fix this issue by reshooting it but instead I
have decided that I’m going to sort this issue by color correcting and saturating
the first shot and brightening it up because that is also a option in adobe premiere
that helps you change the look of your project which can add so much to your final
product. I’m going to do this by using the color correcting tool and brightening up
my main actors face to help it blend with the sunlight shining behind the trees. I
hope to make the lighting on the first shot look exactly similar to the shot next to it.
Hopefully they will look seamless and look like they are happening at the same
time.
Middle of post production.
I have fixed the lighting and shadow issue from the cut to the dark shadow to
the shot of the sun shining on the main actors face by changing the brightness
by using the brightness or contrast feature on adobe premiere and making the
shot darker to blend with the previous shot that came before it. I have changed
the brightness from 0.0 to -34.0 which makes the image darker. However there
is a continuity issue with his hair. It looks a little more neater then the shot
previously. I might fix that problem by either re shooting the scene or adding an
extra shot of the front door to show a passing of time between the shot of him
shocked to him picking up the hammer out of the bag.
Middle of post production
In the one tracking shot in the film I noticed that my finger/thumb showed up on
the bottom right of the shot because I was trying to pull the focus on the lens to
make the reveal of the door being wide open sharp. I fixed this problem by
double clicking on the monitor on the edit. This then allows you to move or zoom
in the image to how you want it to look. I used this to further zoom in on the door
so that my finger/thumb does not show. The cross on the image is the marker
that helps you do so.
Opening and closing titles
I have started typing the opening title cards that book end the film and I used a
font that is basic but fits the grim and atmospheric tone while also fitting the
atheistic of the overall film. Which is filmed entirely black and white and they
are the only two colors you will see in the entire film. Any other color added
would ruin that tone I’m trying to create.
After reshoots
I have completed reshoots and they have gone mostly well, however the audio
for the camera was a lot quieter then the other camera I used so because of
this I used the audio of the previous footage but replaced the actual footage
with what I reshot. That way the audio will seam like they belong in the same
scene. That is why the code on the footage have different numbers on them
when usually they would have the same numbers written on them.
Re-edit
• I have added some background noise downloaded from
YouTube to block out the loud wind noise and camera
noise from the footage. That way you don’t hear the noise
generated from the camera shake or the constant wind
blowing on the camera. It ruins the atmosphere and
tension I’m trying to set up because the noise generated
from two noises is distracting and ruins the illusion and
suspense set up in the opening scene.
SECTION 5
Soundtrack Planning
Soundtrack planning
• I have composed the music using soft where called garage band that
gives you the option to compose music using different types of
sounds from other musical instruments without playing them. You
play them through a keyboard that is connected to the computer. I
used church bells as the sound that is present in the music. The
sound is very ambient and very atmospheric and not at all cheesy.
The use of the bell is becoming a genre convention in slow burn
thrillers so I used that inspiration for my film as I feel it blends
perfectly with the black and white atheistic.
Soundtrack planning
I have decided to add in some music into the opening of the film. Not only to block out
the background and camera noise when you hear it on its own but to create that subtle
sense of fear and anxiety going through the protagonist’s eyes as you can see in the
second image I have selected the section of the music that is the most quiet as it helps
book end the film because both will be used in the beginning where his standing by the
door contemplating on whether or not he should leave the house as well as the twist
where it reveals that he hasn’t left the house. This will help further emphasize that
nothing has changed for him except that he is more afraid then ever and he is at the
exact same place
where he was at the start of the film.

Prod management production template stage 3 2015

  • 6. Color and lighting • I have decided that I am going to shoot the film in black and white. The reasons being because you don’t get any pixels when ever you are shooting in dark areas and no matter how bright the lighting, I can’t get rid of the pixels you see when ever I film in colour. I plan to use some dark lighting to create a tense atmosphere but I can’t do it with colour when shooting with a DSLR because its hard to get rid of the pixels. Something I wont have to deal with when you switch the picture into black and white. Another reason I’m shooting in black and white is because I feel the it manipulates vibrant and normal colours into a look that’s creepy and unsettling. By removing the colours it creates a juxtaposition from a look that’s normal to borderline scary. I plan to use a some lighting tricks hopefully using only the house lights but they might also require the use of a single light panel if I can’t get the lighting to where I want it to be.
  • 8. Mise-En-Sense • Because I’m shooting in black and white, mise-en-sense is probably not going to be relevant as its something that people wont pick up on because the colors will be muted. However I might include some mise-en-sense in the costume design for my main character that might prove to be relevant with the theme of the film. Even though people might not pick up on it, It would be a nice subtle detail to add to show that I have put thought in the tiniest details
  • 9. Key Moments in the film • One of the defining features in the technical aspects in my film will be the use of hard cuts which are transitions from the protagonists head back to reality. These will happen for two or three times when ever the criminal in his head will jump him or stab him and before you see the knife fully penetrate his body it will abruptly cut back to where we where in the beginning with the protagonist standing by the front garden contemplating about what he should do with the situation. These scenes are meant to caught the audience of guard and reveal that what they saw wasn’t real. These scenes work as visual tricks to the audience but I must keep the use of them to a minimum otherwise it will get repetitive very quickly.
  • 10. Structural breakdown Act 1 Act 2 Act 3 EndingOpening From my storyboard I will need about 38 shots in total to complete and the film will hopefully Take roughly about 5 minutes or under.

  • 20. Production Group Info • Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of production, using a table is suggested Name Job Role Contact info Charlie Ryan Lead actor He is my twin brother and we live together Lewis Hamilton Cinematographer, Stedicam operator Good friend, known each other for years. Currently have his number and we meet to discuss new information about the shoot.
  • 21. Location information • Information and images of your location[s] for filming • You should have address details, clearance/premissions for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts] • Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option • Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
  • 22. Location information • I am going to be shooting the film in the front yard of my house 31 Belman walk as well as my kitchen. The film is very small scaled with and my house is the only location in the film. Because this is my house it makes things very easy for me because I don’t have to sign any contracts or pay to film in the location I have chosen. The only people I have to consult before filming is my family and because we are very close, doing that is very easy. My house has a corridor once you enter from the front door and I’m going to use that as a location for my tracking shot that comes in the third act of the film. Tracking shots are usually done in corridors so it makes it ideal to do the shot in that part of my house. I don’t have a plan b location but I don’t think I need one because its my house and like I said I don’t need to write any contracts or worry about not being able to film. One of the issues is that there is a construction site that luckily is inactive on weekends which is when I intend to do the shoot. However the neighborhood could still get potentially noisy with all the residents that live there. I intend to overcome this issue by going to a quiet location and recoding some background audio to play over the footage thus drowning out the noise in the recorded footage.
  • 23. Risk Assessment Risk Solution The knife prop I use might be too sharp. Do research of how to handle it prior the shoot. Make sure it doesn't penetrate the body The Tripod I use doesn't work or breaks Use the replacement one I have in my house. Because I have 2 it will be easier then cancelling the shoot
  • 24. Contingency Planning • Things go wrong • Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to minimise the effect on production • You should consider the following areas: Technical, Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues for each] • Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
  • 25. Contingency Plan What could go wrong? What are the solutions Equipment including camera, tripod, charger doesn't work as well as it should I have some replacements to use at home incase that happens. Main actor gets ill Give him some medicine as well has giving him a break. The role does not require him to do much My crew member does not show up for the shoot Film some footage by myself to same time and recourses instead of fully wasting an entire day worth of filming It starts raining. Push back the shoot to Sunday instead of Saturday which is the day we intend to film. Camera man does not show up on day as planed Push back the shoot to a day where he’s more likely to be available There’s too much noise in the area Tell residents to be quiet or record background noise in quiet area to add in post
  • 26. Production Schedule • Provide an outline of what you will do on which days during production • Start of production: • Explain the shooting process by handing out a shot list to my cast/crew members giving them an idea of how the film will be made and structured. Make sure all the props and equipment are in order then get started. We will start at half 10 in the morning. • Filming the first scene: • Will be filming in chronological order so we will start in the front entrance of the house and will work around the different angles in the first scene. • The second scene: • This part of the film will be shot in my neighborhood street just down the hill of my house up close followed by the tracking shot following our protagonist to the front garden. • The third scene/second act: • The rest of the shoot will be done in this one location in my front yard and the inside of my house. We will make kitchen messy for set purposes to show the damage the criminal has done. There will be a point at the shoot where I change position from behind the camera to being in front of the camera where I play the thug who stabs the main character. To make the shoot a lot smoother I will instead film the scenes of the protagonist and the criminal separately by filming the suspenseful moments where the protagonist walks into the house and then filming the reveal of the burglar after wards instead of filming them in the same way the scenes are structured in the final product. • The third/Final Act. • After a short lunch break we will stage the climax where the criminal takes the situation in his hands and takes out the hammer, walks in and hits the criminal with the hammer before hitting him repeatedly multiple times. We might even stage the stabbing scenes as well just to be on the safe side. The film ends with the same scene we started with. I might shoot the first and last scene back to back just to make the shoot smoother.
  • 30. Clearance and Permissions • I don’t need to sign any clearance and permissions slips for my locations because I am filming in my house and my neighborhood and not in any public place such as a restaurant or a business area, locations that don’t require a contract to sign from me or the client. At best I need to ask permission from my mother or neighbors who we are good terms on so singing one will not be necessary.
  • 32. This is the first shot from my film taken from the edit from premiere pro. While the set up and placement of the shot is how I envisioned it, I made the mistake of setting the shot in the wrong frame rate making the shot look and feel like a soap then a film. I was able to fix this issue when we where done filming the scene. Worse still the edit softwhere premiere pro could only accept this shot in the aspect ratio you are seeing now and when I could get it to cover the screen the resolution was completely off. So unfortunately I have to re shoot this scene with the right frame rate which shouldn't be too hard because its only two shots that I have to recreate.
  • 33. When filming the first shot of the film, I was originally going to have the shot zoom out from the close up to the wide shot from the door frame but when I attempt to do the shot during the shoot, the lenses where jolty and there was no way I could move the lenses in a smooth and seamless way so instead I’ve decided that I’m going to cut out the parts of the shot where I move the lenses from the close up to the wide shot and have it cut from the close up to the wider shot of the protagonist standing by the door. That way the shot is a lot more effective to the audience instead of the shot being awkward and the audience being taken out of the film and ruining the tone and atmosphere I’m trying to create.
  • 34. I have left a gap in between one clip to the next because one or two scenes need to be re shot along with the first scene of the film where the protagonist is standing by the door. This clip is meant to be the end where he is standing by the same spot bookending the whole film. The shots that where meant to fill that gap is a shot of his watch showing the time as the shot before is him looking down to stare at his watch. I need to re shot it because much like the first two clips I filmed them in the wrong frame rate. One that is not ideal to use when making a film.
  • 36. The shots that I ended up abandoning where shots MVI_9951 to MVI_9964 mainly because those where the shots that s filmed in the wrong frame rate so those shots would look rubbish if I released them because of the small aspect ratio and messy resolution. The shots after that point I ended up using for my final film because I filmed them in the right settings and the right frame rate. Other shots I ended up abandoning was because of the noise you can hear from the neighbors in my street as well as the camera noise and there wasn’t anyway I could get rid of the noise so the shots I went with where ones where the noise generated from the neighbors was no where to be heard as well as the camera noise. This is most prominent from shots 9970 to 9978. That entire part was cut out because those where different attempts at the same shot that I ended up abandoning because because of the wind noise, camera noise and pedestrian noise ruined an otherwise good shot and It
  • 38.
  • 39. Start of post production This is at the start of the edit process and I have downloaded a few clips on to the edit and I have used the mark in and mark out tools to choose what parts of the clip I want to add in the final film. I’m observing the footage and I have found out that the footage wont work in the final film because the resolution is off when you set it on full screen because I filmed the first shot in the wrong frame rate but I changed it after filming that shot but I’m goanna re shoot that first shot but only in the right frame rate. Another problem is that the first shots are too short and I feel they needed to be longer to set up the mood and atmosphere instead of starting it out so quickly.
  • 40. Middle of post production I’m installing the clips in the order I want the film to play out and I have found out that I need to re shoot another shot because I lost one shot where the protagonist is starring at his phone to call the police only to look at up to the shot you are looking at now where the criminal is starring right at him so I’m going to re shoot that shot and fill that gap in the edit before continuing with completing it all.
  • 41. Middle of post production These 2 shots are in sequence with each other and as you can see the lighting is a little different. I was originally going to fix this issue by reshooting it but instead I have decided that I’m going to sort this issue by color correcting and saturating the first shot and brightening it up because that is also a option in adobe premiere that helps you change the look of your project which can add so much to your final product. I’m going to do this by using the color correcting tool and brightening up my main actors face to help it blend with the sunlight shining behind the trees. I hope to make the lighting on the first shot look exactly similar to the shot next to it. Hopefully they will look seamless and look like they are happening at the same time.
  • 42. Middle of post production. I have fixed the lighting and shadow issue from the cut to the dark shadow to the shot of the sun shining on the main actors face by changing the brightness by using the brightness or contrast feature on adobe premiere and making the shot darker to blend with the previous shot that came before it. I have changed the brightness from 0.0 to -34.0 which makes the image darker. However there is a continuity issue with his hair. It looks a little more neater then the shot previously. I might fix that problem by either re shooting the scene or adding an extra shot of the front door to show a passing of time between the shot of him shocked to him picking up the hammer out of the bag.
  • 43. Middle of post production In the one tracking shot in the film I noticed that my finger/thumb showed up on the bottom right of the shot because I was trying to pull the focus on the lens to make the reveal of the door being wide open sharp. I fixed this problem by double clicking on the monitor on the edit. This then allows you to move or zoom in the image to how you want it to look. I used this to further zoom in on the door so that my finger/thumb does not show. The cross on the image is the marker that helps you do so.
  • 44. Opening and closing titles I have started typing the opening title cards that book end the film and I used a font that is basic but fits the grim and atmospheric tone while also fitting the atheistic of the overall film. Which is filmed entirely black and white and they are the only two colors you will see in the entire film. Any other color added would ruin that tone I’m trying to create.
  • 45. After reshoots I have completed reshoots and they have gone mostly well, however the audio for the camera was a lot quieter then the other camera I used so because of this I used the audio of the previous footage but replaced the actual footage with what I reshot. That way the audio will seam like they belong in the same scene. That is why the code on the footage have different numbers on them when usually they would have the same numbers written on them.
  • 46. Re-edit • I have added some background noise downloaded from YouTube to block out the loud wind noise and camera noise from the footage. That way you don’t hear the noise generated from the camera shake or the constant wind blowing on the camera. It ruins the atmosphere and tension I’m trying to set up because the noise generated from two noises is distracting and ruins the illusion and suspense set up in the opening scene.
  • 48. Soundtrack planning • I have composed the music using soft where called garage band that gives you the option to compose music using different types of sounds from other musical instruments without playing them. You play them through a keyboard that is connected to the computer. I used church bells as the sound that is present in the music. The sound is very ambient and very atmospheric and not at all cheesy. The use of the bell is becoming a genre convention in slow burn thrillers so I used that inspiration for my film as I feel it blends perfectly with the black and white atheistic.
  • 49. Soundtrack planning I have decided to add in some music into the opening of the film. Not only to block out the background and camera noise when you hear it on its own but to create that subtle sense of fear and anxiety going through the protagonist’s eyes as you can see in the second image I have selected the section of the music that is the most quiet as it helps book end the film because both will be used in the beginning where his standing by the door contemplating on whether or not he should leave the house as well as the twist where it reveals that he hasn’t left the house. This will help further emphasize that nothing has changed for him except that he is more afraid then ever and he is at the exact same place where he was at the start of the film.
