2. ABOUT – MCR LAB
¡MCRLab members are working under the leadership
of Prof. Abdulmotaleb El Saddik on the
convergence of multimedia technologies for the
creation of DigitalTwins in order to enhance the
quality of life of citizens.

3. RECAP – DIGITAL
TWINS
¡A digital twin is a digital replica
of a living or non-living physical
entity. By bridging the physical and
the virtual world, data is
transmitted seamlessly allowing
the virtual entity to exist
simultaneously with the physical
entity.

5. TODAY’S TOPIC - HAPTICS
¡ Haptics is a term that was derived from the Greek verb “haptesthai” meaning “of or
relating to the sense of touch.”
¡ It refers to the science of manual sensing and manipulation of surrounding objects
and environments through the sense of touch.
El Saddik,Abdulmotaleb. (2007).The Potential of HapticsTechnologies. Instrumentation &
Measurement Magazine, IEEE. 10. 10 - 17. 10.1109/MIM.2007.339540.
6. DEFINITIONS OF MAIN TERMS USED WHEN DESCRIBING HAPTICS
AND THE SENSE OF TOUCH
Haptic Relating to the sense of touch
Proprioceptive Relating to sensory information about the state of the body
Vestibular Pertaining to the perception of head position, acceleration, and deceleration.
Kinesthetic Meaning the feeling of motion. Relating to sensations originating in muscles, tendons
and joints
Cutaneous Pertaining to the skin itself or the skin as a sense organ. Includes sensation of pressure,
temperature, and pain
Tactile Pertaining to the cutaneous sense but more specifically the sensation of pressure
rather than temperature or pain
Force Feedback Relating to the mechanical production of information sensed by the human kinesthetic
system

8. HAPTICS INTERACTION
¡ The interaction may or may not be
accompanied by other sensory
modalities such as vision or audition

Use of electromagnetic technologies, with
limited sensations
Specific, coordinated and localized touch
response, example screen or touch panel
Delivers both touch-specific response with
customizable haptic effects
