4. The textile industry is primarily concerned with the design, production and
distribution of yarn, cloth and clothing. The raw material may be natural, or synthetic
using products of the chemical industry.

There were around 120 jute mills, including 25 state-owned mills
Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data shows, Bangladesh exported jute and jute
goods worth nearly $920 million in fiscal year 2015-16. Of the exports, yarn and
twine was $559m, followed by raw jute over $173m, sacks and bags over $122m.

14. Future Prospects in Bangladesh Textile Sector
As the population is growing and the standard of living is increasing in Bangladesh, the demand for
textiles is increasing rapidly.
Moreover, growth rate of RMG export will continue as Bangladesh has edge over other competitors due
to low labor cost.
Challenges in Bangladesh Textile Sector
Inconsistent of gas and power supply.
Environmental pollution.
Reputational crisis for Bangladesh.
Lack of technical and market research facilities.
Shortage of skilled manpower.

17. Overview of Bangladesh RMG
52% RMG export in EU and 26% in USA. Mainly EU is knit RMG market and USA is a woven RMg
market. Among all of export in USA 86% is RMG, in which 42% of total woven export and 12% of
total knit export.

24. Contribution of RMG sector in national
economy of Bangladesh:
Bangladesh garment industry has generated $28.67bn exports in the calendar year 2016 which is
7.76% higher than the previous calendar year and in FY 2016-17 exported $28.14bn.
RMG contributes 7.11 percent to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) among the
contribution of industry to the GDP was 28.1%.
25. Importance of Textile Industry in
Bangladesh
It has contributed to employment creation, poverty reduction as well as women
empowerment.
More than 81% of export earning comes from textile sector.
Contributes over 13% of GDP, 40% industrial value addition comes from the textile
sector.
Provide huge opportunities for the supporting industry banking, insurance,
shipping, transport, toiletries, cosmetics, hotel and other related economical
activities.
The textile industry is connected with meeting the demand for clothing, which is a
basic necessary of life.
26. Textile and clothing sector plays a vital role in the growth of economy;
generation of more than 65% of the country’s industrial employment
and 81% of the export earnings. The industry employs about 5 million
workers of whom 80% are women. The textile and clothing industries
provide the single source of growth in Bangladesh's rapidly developing
economy . Exports of textiles and garments are the principal source of
foreign exchange earnings.
