How it is not the
iNTER‘NET’
WORLD WIDE ‘WEB’
Internet?
Web?
Aren't they the same thing?
NO!
 Many people use the terms Internet and World Wide Web (aka. the
Web) interchangeably, but in fact the two terms are not synonymous.
The Internet and the Web are two separate but related things.
Internet? Web?
Aren't they the same thing? (contd.)
• What is it?
 Most of us know to USE the Internet without actually understanding
how it WORKS.
 The Internet is a ‘network of networks’.
 Networks come in all sizes. You might have a computer network at
your school, college, or even your home. Even your cell phone is a
network, as are all your electronic devices like iPADs, Tablets and
other things.
 All these networks added up together are what constitutes the
Internet.
iNTERNETWORKING
• To put this in Layman’s terms
 The Internet is simply the way computers connect to each other in
order to share Information.
 This is the Hardware! Router, Modem, Network Card etc.,
 It contains the machines, wires and the data.
 The Internet provides lots of different services, just one of which is
the World Wide Web.
iNTERNETWORKING (contd.)
• So who actually owns the Internet?
 There are two answers to this question:
1. Nobody
2. Lots of people
 If you think of the Internet as a unified, single entity, then no one
owns it.
 If you think of it as a collection of networks then Lots of people own
the Internet.
iNTERNETWORKING (contd.)
• Uses
 Send e-mail messages.
 Send (upload) or receive (down load) files between computers.
 Participate in discussion groups, such as mailing lists and
newsgroups.
 Surfing the web.
iNTERNETWORKING (contd.)
• What is it?
 The Web is the system that is used to access the Internet. It is not
the only system out there but sure is the widely used and most
popular one.
 To access the W3 you need a browser such as the Safari, Mozilla or
the Chrome.
 W3 is basically a lot of different files (all over the world) that are
linked to each other, so that you can look at a file that has a link to
another file and then follow that link to read the next file.
World Wide Web
• History
 Prior to the web we used to consume most information in a linear
fashion
 Just like a book where each sentence is read from left to right,
beginning to end, page by page in a straight line until one reaches
the end of the book.
 But this is not efficient when we need to do complex objectives
which require linking one process to other in an interconnected
network like a web.
World Wide Web (contd.)
• History
 Tim Berners-Lee ‘the father of the W3’ understood the need to
organize information in this complex orientation
 He did this using already know process called ‘Hyperlinks’
 Simply, what he did was link several pages of a website and even
redirecting some pages into other websites.
World Wide Web (contd.)
This Computer was used by Berners-Lee at CERN and became
the world's first web server!
 The Web uses urls (Uniform Resource Locator) to locate web pages.
 Hyper text languages like html & Java Script make the web page..
 A web browser will take all the codes (html, etc.) and change them
into letters, videos and pictures for us people to understand.
 We don’t have to learn a new computer language for us to use the
web as the browser creates a GUI(Graphic User Interface) for us.
World Wide Web
World Wide Web
 Metaphorically, Web is an ocean with more than 90% of uncharted
information in it.
 It is widely accessible and flexible just like the water.
 There are two kinds of webs
1. Surface web
2. Deep web
World Wide Web
Deep Web (contd.)

 Internet is NOT The Web!
 The Internet is a network of roads.
 The Browser is a car.
 Your search engine is the GPS in your car.
 The websites are peoples homes and businesses, each having a
unique address.
 W3 is the City.
Conclusion
Thank You!
