9. 4.02 continued

“citations”?
When will I need this
information?
O Read the document
while keeping the
theme in mind.
Then…
O Include 3 supportive
lines of text from the
source that support
the theme as
‘citations’
O You will include
details from all four
sources in your
outline, which is
4.03.
O You will include
citations in 4.04.
10. 4.03
The goal is 4.03 is to create a thesis
statement and outline for your 4.04 paper.
This is very similar to what we did in lesson
2.05 and 2.06.
We told ya’ that info would come in handy!
Try looking in the gradebook at those two
assignments if you need help.
11. Literary Elements
You will identify three literary elements that
are found in both pieces of literature, then
explore how they develop the theme.
12. THESIS STATEMENT:
A one sentence statement that explains the “what” and “why” for
your 4.04 paper.
SAMPLE:
Both Sue Monk Kidd, author of the novel The Secret Life of Bees,
and Maya Angelou, author of the poem Still I Rise, use point of
view, setting, and conflict to develop the theme of prejudice in
their twentieth century literary works.
NOTE:
Book titles are underlined. Poems and short stories are italicized.
13. COMPLETE THE OUTLINE BY FILLING IN THE BLANKS:
SAMPLE:
I. Main Idea for 1st Body Paragraph – Point of View
A. Literary Element use and effect in novel
1. Specific example – The novel is told through the eyes of Lilly, a
young girl in Georgia in the 1930s. The use of a child as a narrator
adds innocence to the story to expose prejudice.
2. Specific example - “It is the peculiar nature of the world to go
spinning no matter what sort of heartbreak is happening.”
B. Literary Element use and effect in 2nd piece of literature
1. Specific example – The narrator uses repetition to set the tone
of confidence despite injustice.
2. Specific example – “You may tread me in the very dirt / But still,
like dust, I'll rise”
C. Relation of This Literary Element to the Theme
1. Primary Source shows that prejudice existed at the time, because
the act was passed to prevent acts that would “deny or abridge the
right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race.”
2. Secondary Source explains that “The Voting Rights Act itself has
been called the single most effective piece of civil rights legislation
ever passed by Congress.”
14. 4.04 … FINALLY!
O Now it’s time to write your paper.
O Remember, you’ve done the hard part
O 4.01 Reading the novel
O 4.02 Research
O 4.03 Outlining
Now it’s up to you to put everything together in
one amazing paper.
15. Commonly Made Mistakes
The greatest mistake most students make is
forgetting to include the following:
O MLA Formatting
O Specific details, include quotes
O In-text Citations
O MLA Works Cited page
16. MLA Formatting
Use this awesome tool in the classroom for the
basics of setting up your paper:
17. Specifics
Your supporting body paragraphs should
include cited lines of support from both texts
along with either the primary or secondary
sources.
Look back to your outline for help! You
planned these paragraphs in advance.
18. In Text Citations
O You must always name the source when you provide either
direct quotes or information from any of your four
resources.
O The type of citations vary, but here are some samples:
O According to The United States Department of Justice
website, “The Voting Rights Act itself has been called
the single most effective piece of civil rights legislation
ever passed by Congress.”
O The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was among the most
significant pieces of civil rights legislation in history
(justice.gov) .
