Analysing Music Video Questionnaire Answers
I have conducted a survey which I sent to 10 participants to gain their insight and
their results which then can help and be implemented in my music video. My survey
had 10 questions regarding music and music videos and I will use the relevant
answers to improve the overall quality of my music video. I have received all 10
responses which are demonstrated below in the chart which allows the results to be
shown clearly and I will analyse them thoroughly to gain the most insight.
As you can see, the majority of
people who I targeted were
female; this may indicate a hint of
biased behaviour. My target
audience for my music video will
be mainly trying to entice the
female audiences as more
females participate in niche
musical styles. However, I will try
to cater for the male audience by
including both male and female
representatives.
The audience of my music
video is generally 16 and
upwards, which I initiated from
the beginning and this links in
with the results of my product
research. I will try to target
older audiences; however it
may be a preference in music
taste and the style of video. I
am choosing to target 16 and
above as I am in the age
range from 16-25, therefore I
believe my video will naturally
attract those of a similar age,
due to the style and meaning
behind the video.
As the charts implies, those
who participated in my music
survey has a more mainstream
approach to music as they
preferred pop music, which is
usually repeated on radio
stations, increasing their
preference and liking towards
that genre of music.

The chart indicates how all people who
participated in my music questionnaire watch
music videos which mean I will be able to
entice the audience by having a well-planned
out video. All the participants watch music
videos, whether it’s regularly like the 85%
who said they watch music videos and 15%
said they watch them occasionally. This
means that everyone who participated in my
questionnaire watches music videos,
meaning it will be easier to target my desired
audience by having an interesting video.
Some of the answers given may
have been a slight decoy from the
real answer such as Reach for
The Stars, however it may be a
serious answer and the person
may enjoy a slight element of
nostalgia. The most popular
answer with 2 votes would be
Take That (Said It All), who are
classed as pop which is the most
popular genre of music as
indicated earlier. This is the only
answer with common ground as
the other answers are mostly
individualistic and catered to the
individual, yet all artists shown are
mostly of pop genre or with
elements and convention of pop
genre. Most music videos that the
participants have demonstrated
are mostly mainstream artists and
of a pop genre. Additionally, some
participates have shown an
interest in the artist that we plan to
portray through our video: The
1975.
3. What is your favourite

Narrative

Performance
How do you watch
music videos?

The most common answer was that the
participations enjoyed narrative style of video
which is a positive as our music video is
predominantly narrative style as it follows the
relationship of two people. The second highest
choice was performance; this allows the
audience to connect with the band. Hopefully,
we will be able to use the footage from the
Manchester gig which 3 out of the 4 members
in our group attended and filmed. We’ve
contacted the band’s manager and waiting for a
reply back to gain permission to use the footage
to add a performance element and please our
target audience. The least popular choice was
conceptual as the audience may struggle to
understand the meaning behind the video,
despite this we plan to add a miniature element
of conceptual as it would correspond with our
overall style of the video.
The participants of my questionnaire tend to shy
away from watching music videos on Facebook
and Twitter as buffering times are an
inconvenience and it could also be linked to a
scan. The participants avoid watching music
videos on iTunes as you have to pay to preview a
small amount of the video. My target audience is
16-21 and this option doesn’t comply as they are
mostly students. Despite having an older
generation of participants, why pay to watch a
video when you can watch it on Youtube, which
is most popular when viewing music videos. TV
music channels were the next popular answer, as
music videos are now easily accessible;
however, maybe the participants listen to the
music in the background but don’t watch the
music video. The artist’s website had the lowest
amount of votes as it received 1 vote, this maybe
because you need to be able to know what artist
you want to listen to, what song you want to
listen to and would be easier to go on Youtube as
it may be a suggested video.

How do you share music

Word of mouth
Twitter is the most used network site which
my participants prefer yet choose not to
watch music videos as it may be part of a
scam or buffering times may be
inconvenient. Tumblr had the same amount
of participant using it as Twitter, however
most videos on Tumblr are gifs and not
actual videos; therefore it is unlikely that
someone would watch a music video via
Tumblr. Facebook received 2 votes, meaning
that if we were to share our video, it would
be confidently watched on Facebook without
concern of scamming scheme. Youtube was
the second option that received 2 votes, but
it can be used as a social networking site via
another. For example, if a person shares a
video via Facebook through a Youtube link, it
would be considered a social network site.
Most participants reveal that they
occasionally watch share music videos,
this maybe because they are
embarrassed or consciousness of what
people may think of their music
preferences. 3 of the 10 participants said
they share music videos, indicating that
they aren’t ashamed of their music taste
and would like to share it with everyone.
Lastly, 2 people said they don’t share
music videos meaning they could not
watch music videos intently, don’t use
social media networking sites which is
unlikely or may not be aware of how to do
it.
The most popular answer is word of mouth
meaning that despite the era of Web 2.0,
people prefer to talk to others rather than
sharing their music preferences online. The
next popular answer is Tumblr, as mentioned
before most videos shared on Tumblr are
usually gifs; however I am not a regular user
of Tumblr so I am unaware of whether music
videos are regularly shared. Facebook
received 1 vote which indicates how most
people wouldn’t share videos on Facebook as
their family and friends will see it. Twitter and
Youtube received no votes, proving that
Twitter is the least used social networking site
to share music videos as it may lead to a
scam. Youtube is used when sharing a music
video, but it is shared via another site such as
Facebook.
5. In conclusion, I will use my results from this market research and implement the
relevant qualities of the research in my music video. These results will enable my
overall music video to target the desired audience and have as much effect as
needed. Most answers proved what I already thought was true, that indie and pop
genres are most popular nowadays with a younger audience. This will be beneficial
towards my group and overall video as it will target our audience which is
predominantly 16-20 year olds and those who have an interest in the pop/indie genre
which is our genre. These results will implement my music video as I will be able to
create a more intense, in depth video knowing now what I need to focus on
throughout the process of making the video.
