The digestive system breaks down food and extracts nutrients and energy. It begins with the mouth, where food is chewed and enzymes begin breaking it down. The esophagus then transports the food to the stomach through peristalsis. The stomach further breaks down the food before sending it to the small intestine for additional digestion and absorption of nutrients. Other organs like the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder produce enzymes and bile to help with digestion. The rectum stores waste before it exits through the anus.
