William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England to parents John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. He received a classical education at grammar school but did not attend university. In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway and by the late 1580s had moved to London to begin his career in theater. During Shakespeare's life, Queen Elizabeth I ruled England and London was growing rapidly from a small town to a big city. Shakespeare wrote his plays for the Globe Theater, which had to be located outside the city limits due to Puritan beliefs, and his plays featured male actors portraying female roles.
