Model for journey and maturity
Guidelines for each stage of maturity
Customer journey’s to the Cloud typically involve these four phases.
In the project phase, Enterprises are running projects to experience benefits from cloud. AWS is evaluated and vetted on a project-by-project basis.
After experiencing the benefits of cloud, customers then build the foundation to scale their cloud adoption. This includes creating a landing zone (cloud compartment architecture, network connectivity and Identity Management), Center of Excellence, Operations Model, and Security and Compliance readiness. AWS becomes a proven choice and is often used for new projects.
Enterprises then migrate existing applications, including mission-critical applications, or entire data centers to the cloud as they look to scale their adoption across a growing portion of their IT portfolio.
Finally, in the last stage, with operations in the cloud, customers focus on reinvention, taking advantage of the flexibility and capabilities of AWS to transform their businesses, speeding time to market and innovation.
The MAP program enables you to accelerate your migration by bringing you through the foundation building and migration phases, both building capability and capturing value the from migrations.
[MIGRATION BUSINESS OUTCOMES]:
PRIMARY MESSAGE: Migration is a fundamental step in the cloud journey to Reinvention. MAP is designed to help you achieve three business outcomes on your journey. Through MAP, you: 1) build and operate your AWS environment that is your foundation for cloud innovation. 2) obtain substantial cost-savings by retiring your technical debt. This also allows your IT resources can focus on activities that differentiate your business, and 3) migrate through a secure, proven approach that also reduces your IT risk as you move to a more resilient IT model.
DETAILED MESSAGE:
We do see a strong disruption trend in almost all industries these last few years. It’s also one of the reasons we created the Migration Acceleration Program. Most of the companies are seeing disruption in their industries, and they specifically mention three areas they seek assistance:
INNOVATION- They are focused on creating a foundational cloud platform for agility and innovation, one where they can leverage emerging technologies and methods like AI, Machine Learning, IOT and Analytics.
RETIRING TECHNICAL DEBT - They want to direct their budgets against the most important business challenges, challenges that really make a difference to their business
REDUCING RISK - They know they want to move to a more robust and resilient service platform but they need to do so carefully and securely and they are looking for a prescriptive and proven way to do that.
[MIGRATION DRIVERS]:
PRIMARY MESSAGE: There are many drivers for customers seeking to migrate to the cloud at scale. The majority of customers to date have been here to discuss data center consolidation and cost reduction. Primary drivers for cloud adoption are quickly changing – TCO reduction for moving to the cloud is now assumed. Customers now are seeking to improve business agility, increase development productivity, or are seeking a cloud platform for digital innovation. The conversation has changed from “why move to the cloud” to “help me move to the cloud quickly.”
DETAILED MESSAGE:
We see a number of different business drivers for companies such as yourself seeking to migrate to the cloud. The primary drivers are:
Increasing BUSINESS AGILITY - some of our customers are creating business cases where they believe their workforce can be 30-70% more productive and deliver features much faster as a result of migrating their skills and applications to the cloud.
DATA CENTER CONSOLIDATION - we see a lot of data center consolidation projects, especially in companies that have been active with acquisitions or that experienced infrastructure sprawl over the years.
Companies are pursuing INNOVATION & DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION - we increasingly see companies looking to completely re-imagine their business using modern technology as part of a larger digital transformation projects and innovation
And REDUCING COST - of course, all cost conscious organizations are always looking for ways to improve the bottom line by reducing their costs
There may be additional drivers like acquisitions, facility decisions and colocation contact changes driving the migration to the cloud. We also see high performance compute projects and data analytics projects leading the way for cloud migration projects.
What ever the reason enterprises are motivated to migrate their legacy systems to the cloud, often times comprising of tens of thousands of servers or dozens of data centers, all customers are ASKING A LOT OF QUESTIONS about how they can do it quickly.

AWS Migration Hub provides a single place to monitor migrations in any AWS region where your migration tools are available. There is no additional cost for using Migration Hub. You only pay for the cost of the individual migration tools you use, and any resources being consumed on AWS.
AWS Application Discovery Service supports agent-based and agentless modes of operation. With the agentless discovery, VMware customers collect VM configuration and performance profiles without deploying the AWS Application Discovery Agent on each host, which accelerates data collection. Customers in a non-VMware environment or that need additional information, like network dependencies and information about running processes, may install the Application Discovery Agent on servers and virtual machines (VMs) to collect data.
[MIGRATION PATTERNS]:
PRIMARY MESSAGE: Assessing your application portfolio and determining the application migration pattern for all of you applications is a critical step to the success of your migration planning and execution. Early cloud adopter CIO’s from large enterprises have warned us that they desired to jump straight to a all-in “Refactoring” of all their applications to take full advantage of the cloud. This can result in a lengthy design process before moving your first workloads to the cloud as rewrite applications. Based on their advice and witnessing customers have success, we advise you to take advantage of significant lift and shift opportunities to get your cloud migration move quickly, gain cloud experience, and see cost-savings quickly. This can jumpstart your refactoring effort. As well, you can always refactor after you lift and shift and have gained more cloud experience. We also want to call out an emerging new “R” – relocate. You can quickly relocate applications based on VMware and container technologies quickly to AWS with minimal effort and complexity.
DETAILED MESSAGE:
Once some basic discovery and assessment has been done, each application migration tends to follow one of 6 different paths, which builds upon the 5 R’s that Gartner coined in 2011. We’ve outlined 6, and they include:
RELOCATE: New “R” for accelerate migrations (can move hundreds of applications in days) – you quickly relocate applications based on VMware and container technologies quickly to AWS with minimal effort and complexity.
REHOSTING: The simplest approach is Rehost (aka lift-and-shift) often representing half or more of customer environment, typically leveraging tools that automate the process. As customers progress through their migrations we often find them starting with reachitecting applications as the default approach, but then shift more and more to rehosting to accelerate their migrations and capture business benefits, then transform their environments over time.
REPLATFORMING: Some applications require modifications to address specific challenges or provide key benefits, such as reduced licensing costs.
REPURCHASING: A lot of our customers are moving toward the SaaS model and toward solutions like Workday, Drupal, and Salesforce
REARCHITECTING: In some cases, you may want to completely re-imagine your application architecture and skip right toward state-of-the-art by leveraging the broadest set of container-based, server-less, and managed noSQL offerings on the market.
RETIRING: you never know what you’re going to find until you look, and common for us to find that no one knows what 10-20% of an enterprise IT portfolio does and it can simply be shut off.
Finally, our customers tell us that having hundreds of examples like these are one of the reasons they find AWS the easiest platform the migrate to. We’re going to continue to harvest learnings from this experience so that we can accelerate customers through commonly encountered migration scenarios using prescriptive guidance and best practice.

FROM ENTERPRISE FIRST CALL DECK
CIO’s tell us that cost is not the key factor in their decision to move to the cloud. Agility and innovation are usually at the center of their motivation. However, being at least cost neutral is table stakes before considering any migration to the cloud.
We typically see at least 20% savings with just a lift-and-shift. Over the first months, customers continue to optimize their EC2 instances for additional 10-20% savings. By adopting higher level services, customers further optimize - many seeing 60% or more savings.
