- ANIMATED SLIDE Timing: 1 minute Key Points: Smart phones have many third-party applications, more robust operating systems, and greater processing power. Users can do more with smart phones. A feature phone audience is only interested in clear reception for voice calls and sending and receiving messages. Smart phones offer more value for customers’ money. Smart phones also increase revenue for you because they require a monthly data plan. Instructor Notes: CLICK to bring up the headings “Smart Phone” and “Feature Phone” Ask participants what they think the definition of each is. Once participants have answered, CLICK again to bring up the bullets under each heading. Review the additional information before to find talking points for the bulleted lists. Additional Information: Smart phones excel at multitasking, enabling users receive alerts while talking, for example, or download e-mail while browsing the web. Smart phone users benefit from an abundance of third-party applications that make life easier and more fun. Smart phones run on more robust operating systems, with greater processing power and RAM. For the consumer, this means the ability to do more faster, run more applications simultaneously, and benefit from a phone that can adapt as the user’s needs and demands evolve. With the data connectivity that smartphones provide, you can connect with a lot of information at your fingertips. Bing™ for Mobile for example, gives you local search information, traffic conditions and even movie times right on your phone. A feature phone can be defined as a “basic” phone. It has traditionally offered size and price advantages over smart phones with no presumption that the device excels beyond voice features. The feature phone audience is only interested in clear reception for voice calls and sending and receiving messages. Third-party software is supported via limited interfaces and is often of lower quality, is less powerful, and is less integrated with the OS , home screen, and other features. Since smart phones offer so much more, it makes sense for some customers to buy them instead of feature phones. Some feature phone have the same price as smart phones and cannot do nearly as much. Keep in mind, when a customer buys an expensive feature phone, they make a one-time purchase. But when that same customer buys a smart phone at the same initial cost, he or she also buys a monthly data plan.

Additional Information: Facebook on Windows phone versus Blackberry: Overall, the Blackberry Bold lacks a robust user interface and integrated functionality in comparison to a Windows Phone. WM on device discovery and easy to find web download are much easier for end users to discover and set up. E-mail for BB is send only, WM is send/receive/reply and offers easier access to contacts. It’s very difficult update your profile, find your friend’s contact information or search for friends. They do have some nice photo features; photo upload to facebook, flickr, or send via MMS; photo editing and geo tagging but WM photo editing features are more robust and include shooting mode, size, effect, frame and white balance. Facebook on Windows phone versus iPhone: WM is at parity with iPhone. We include a video upload capability, they don’t. We offer text messaging from friends, they don’t. iPhone offers access to all Facebook apps via News Feeds. Facebook FAQ Q: What are the general features of the Facebook application for Windows® phones? Availability? Access to status updates, friend requests and photo tags, plus the ability to read and create wall posts, share photos and send messages, and update profile pictures. Only version on the market today offering ability to upload video right from the phone. Free download available from windowsphones.com in April. Will work on all Windows® 6.1 and newer phones. Also available via Windows® Marketplace for Mobile and through our OEMs. Q: Is this a phone, PC, or Web-based application? This is a Windows® phone application and another example of how we are offering services that complement the Windows PC experience. Q: How does this differ with other mobile versions of Facebook, namely what is already available on the iPhone and BlackBerry? Is this another example of Windows® phones catching up? Customers have always been able to check and manage Facebook accounts via the Web browser. New application offers a more robust user interface and is the only version on the market today that gives people the capability to upload video right from the phone. Q: How does the video upload feature work? Is there a limit on length or quality? Simply go to menu, select add video, then record the video, and finally select upload. The video clip will then be added directly to your Facebook page. We are working with Facebook on technical video details. Q: What took you so long to develop a Facebook application for Windows® phones? Our focus with Facebook was to enrich the consumer experience on Windows® phones by delivering a high quality application that differs from what is already on the market. A robust user interface and ability to upload video are a few examples of how we are delivering on this focus.

Users are already familiar with IE. Users can get more done using IE such as banking, playing games, completing purchases, booking tickets, etc. Instructor Notes: With changing customer expectations, we made the leap to full browsing, in the truest sense of the phrase. See the Web on your phone. Experience built-in Flash, not require a workaround application, like YouTube viewer. In a Crimson Consulting study sponsored by Microsoft, users were able to complete more assigned tasks with the new IE Mobile on a Windows Mobile phone than they were with any other browser in the study, in fact, up to 48% more tasks. Tasks included banking, playing games, completing purchases, booking tickets, etc. Competitive advantages: “Internet Explorer Mobile, with support for AJAX and Flash Lite, was the best in class for completing tasks on the Web such as banking, playing games, shopping, and completing forms, according to a third-party comparison” -- source: Crimson Consulting, July 2008. In areas where the G1 phone is available, you may want to point out that the G1 does not have Flash support. Microsoft was first to recognize market interest in mobile Internet, designing a lightweight browser when phones and networks had just been created.
