This document discusses the Cradle to Cradle design paradigm and its advantages over the traditional Cradle to Grave model. It promotes designing products and materials so that they provide nutrition in both their technical and biological cycles, and can be reused or recycled in continuous loops. Examples are given of companies applying Cradle to Cradle principles through designing biodegradable and recyclable products, as well as architecture that mimics nature. The goal is to create designs that are beneficial rather than burdensome to the environment.

14. COST OF POOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY
. Over 40% of children have allergies.
Several decades ago, only 2 – 3% did
• Every third person in the western world has allergy
problems.
• Allergies cost the U.S. health care system $18 billion
annually
SOLUTION: design materials and products for indoor use

23. ARE WE TOO MANY?
Phasing out the human race by voluntarily ceasing to breed will
allow Earth's biosphere to return to good health. Crowded
conditions and resource shortages will improve as we become
less dense.

49. BEYOND THE LIMITS OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE
Eco-effective architecture
• Rematerialization
– Technical and biological cycles
– Integrated with nature‘s
nutrient and energy cycles
• Material chemistry
– Positively defined material
chemistry
– e.g. Climatex and BASF carpet
fiber
51. A2 – TUNNEL PROJECT: CRADLE TO CRADLE BUILDING MATERIALS
• Positive Effect from Concrete:
– Fine-Dust capture through absorbsion of Concrete Surface
– Transformation of air pollutants, such as by TioCem Technology
– Fiber Reinforced Concrete from recycled carpet fibers (as an interim
solution for carpet materials)
– Concrete with additional functional properties, such as
• Installing self-illuminating bacteria in concrete surfaces
• Better use of energy by way light reflection on white instead of gray cement

59. ADVANTAGES OF GREEN ROOFTOP
• Green rooftop
– captures rainwater
– reduces energy needs for cooling and heating
– keeps buildings an average 5°C cooler than
bare rooftop buildings
• The plants transform carbon dioxide into
oxygen
60. ECO-EFFECTIVE ARCHITECTURE
• More Impact
– More habitat
– More clean water
– More fresh air
– More pleasure
– More beauty
– More biological diversity
– More fun
• Intelligent Workplace
– Responds to outdoor and
indoor conditions
