CRIANZA DE LA TIERRACRIANZA DE LA TIERRA
n la cultura andina la crianza es
un modo de vinculación natural, y la
manera saludable de fructificar la
vida misma. Pachamama, madre
vida, es el planeta tierra, nuestro
entorno natural, nuestro mundo.
Por eso sabemos que nuestro
planeta debe ser criado por todos
sus habitantes.
Nosotros entendemos que la
relación de crianza es recíproca. La
pachamama nos cría, cuando nos
brinda generosa el agua que corre
por sus venas, las nubes y nevados,
cuando nos ofrece sus campos para
cultivar nuestros alimentos, cuando
nos brinda la posibilidad de
nutrirnos con otros seres de su
crianza en los mares, ríos y
bosques. Nos brinda abrigo, como
nos ofrece calores y fríos
necesarios, nubes, vientos y lluvias,
sin los cuales tampoco sería posible
la reproducción de la vida. Los
científicos llaman a esta relación:
Ecosistemas.
Nosotros también criamos a la
Pachamama, cuando sabemos
vestirla de hermosos campos
cultivados, cuando respetamos el
curso natural de la reproducción de
la vida que es la crianza misma.
Cuidando y alimentando a las
llamas, Alpacas, Wicuñas y
Wanacos, y protegiendo a todos los
llamados animales y plantas
domesticados, como a los animales
y plantas silvestres, de la tierra los
mares y los aires. La sabia forma de
organización de la vida en el planeta
es el equilibrio. Cuidar ese
equilibrio es la manera de criar a
nuestra Pachamama.
Pero, ocurre que cuando nos
BREEDING THE EARTHBREEDING THE EARTH
n Andean culture, breeding
is a kind of natural link and the
healthy way to make life itself to
be fruitful. Pachamama, mother
life, is planet Earth, our natural
environment, our World. For this
reason, we know that our planet
must be bred by its entire
population.
We understand that the
breeding link is reciprocal.
Pachamama breeds us when it
provides us with generosity the
water that flows through its
veins, that is kept by clouds and
snow-covered mountains, when
it offers its fields to cultivate our
food when it gives us the chance
to be nourished by other beings
that are bred in seas, rivers and
forests. It provides us shelter in
the same way that it offers us
the necessary heat and cold,
clouds, winds, rains. Without
these, the life can not be able to
reproduce. Scientists call this
relationship Ecosystems.
We also breed Pachamama
when we know how to dress it
with beautiful cultivated fields,
when we respect the natural
course of the reproduction of life
that is breeding itself. By caring
and feeding llamas, alpacas,
vicunas and guanacos, and
protecting all the so called
domestic animals and plants,
like wild animals and plants, of
lands, seas and airs. The wise
way to organize life in the planet
is the balance. To care for such
balance is the way to breed our
Pachamama.
But, it happens that when we

comportamos como niños
engreídos y caprichosos, podemos
llegar a extremos de depredación
muy peligrosos, que lastiman a
nuestra Pachamama, la hacen sentir
triste y eventualmente molesta.
Nosotros sabemos que la
Pachamama es sagrada y que
debemos estar agradecidos por las
hermosas condiciones de vida que
nos brinda. Por eso debemos
criarla con cariño y respeto.
Los andinos del continente y los
pueblos originarios del mundo
necesitamos apoyarnos junto a los
viajeros que disfrutan de las
maravillas del mundo, para
recuperar actitudes y conductas
sanas y saludables de crianza, para
preservar las formas de vida que
aún no han sido destruidas por el
desequilibrio generado por nuestra
ingratitud y falta de respeto.
Deberíamos evitar el actuar
como agentes contaminantes de la
naturaleza, lo cual lleva a asumir
muchas líneas de acción como por
ejemplo no usar productos
habitad
Reflexionar y difundir el concepto
de crianza de la Pachamama, de
cultura de vida, de paz armonía y
equilibrio, entre todos los seres
que habitamos el planeta tierra. La
depredación humana esta
rompiendo ya el difícil equilibrio y
necesitamos recuperarlo. Proteger
a nuestras tierras, es proteger al
mundo, proteger a nuestros
bosques, es proteger al mundo,
proteger nuestra salud es proteger
la salud del mundo. Criar nuestra
Pachamama es proteger y sanar al
mundo.
Los amigos de QAWAQ, no

contaminan nuestra Pachamama.

behave as spoiled and
capricious children, we can
arrive to very dangerous
extremes of depredation that
hurt our Pachamama, it feels
sad and disturbed eventually.
We know that Pachamama is
sacred and we must be grateful
to it for the beautiful conditions
of life that provide us.
Therefore, we must care of it
with respect and affection.
The Andean population of the
continent and the people of the
World need to support ourselves
with the travelers who enjoy the
World wonders in order to
retrieve good and healthy
attitudes and behaviors of
breeding, to preserve the ways
of life that are not destroyed yet
by the unbalance produced by
our ingratitude and lack of
respect.
We should avoid behaving like
pollutant agents of the nature. It
leads us to assume many lines of
action such as to avoid the use
of pollutant industrial products,
from insecticides and pesticides,
through plastic bags, chemical
protectors, sprays and any
substance that may damage the
habitat.
To think deeply and to
transmit the concept to breed
Pachamama, of culture of life, of
peace, harmony and balance,
among the entire population of
the planet Earth. Human
depredation is already breaking
the balance that is hard to
achieve and we need to recover
it. To protect our land is to
protect the world, to protect our
forests, is to protect the world,
to protect our health is to
protect the health of the world.
To breed Pachamama is to
protect and heal the world.
The QAWAQ friends neither
consume to consume nor
pollute our Pachamama.
Thanks with all my heart.

THE BEGIN OF THE YEARTHE BEGIN OF THE YEAR
In Peru, June 24 is “the main date”
based on a tradition that began in
the middle of the 50's thanks to a
group of Indigenists who also
created (among other things) the
Wifala as the flag composed by 7
multicolor stripes.
Our grandparents organized their
agricultural, livestock and social
calendar based on astronomic
observations and knowledge
accumulated along hundred years
and socially shared. They were
devoted to organize time based on
social, technical and productive
concerns in order to improve the
life level of the population.
It was necessary to organize the
agricultural production based on
the forces of Pacha: cold, heat,
rain, draught. They knew their
power and they were learning to
live with it. They knew El Nino
Phenomenon since it comes from
many centuries ago. Inka and pre-
Inka populations were ready to if.

Estas fechas astronómicas, están
claramente marcadas en las Wakas,
complejos arqueológicos de carácter
ritual como el Korikancha:, Vilkas
W a m a n : M a c h u P i c c h u :
Muyuqmarka: Yanaqoto: Chukitanta:
Waykàn de Pariachi: y otras.
Una conclusión provisional es que
cada Waka ritual mantiene una
relación especial con alguna fecha
astronómica. Pero no cualquier fecha
es propicia para señalar el inicio de
cada año agrícola, pecuario o
climático. Tampoco cualquier resto
arqueológico puede ser considerado
Waka.

archaeological sites with ritual
purposes such as Korikancha:,
Vilkas Waman: Machu Picchu:
M u y u q m a r k a : Ya n a q o t o :
Chukitanta: Waykàn de Pariachi
among others.
According to a temporary
conclusion, each ritual Waka
keeps an special link with some
astronomic date. However,
neither any date is suitable to
mark the start of an agricultural,
livestock or climatic year nor any
archaeological site can be
considered as a Waka.
What happens in solstices?
Winter solstice – June 21: The
harvest ends and thus human life
begins. An agricultural cycle ends
and we thank Pacha for the wealth
obtained along the last cycle. This
time is suitable to establish the
limit of the annual cycle. In winter,
work time is reduced by weather
and low visibility at the start and at
the end of the day. The earth gets
farther to the sun. This distance
prevents that many clouds are
produced by the sea water
(Mamaqocha) evaporation. The
clouds produced remain at low
height and are deposited along
the sea shores making a cold and
wet winter in the coast (Chala and
Yunga). Conversely, the mountain
(Puna, Suni, Jalka and Quechua)
shows a very clear sky since the
ocean clouds are not received. It

noches. En la sierra hay lugares
donde en las noches la temperatura
desciende a varios grados bajo cero.
principal tarea.
Solsticio de verano 21 de diciembre:
Se empieza a preparar la tierra, no
hay vida vegetal a la vista. Empieza a
a c o n d i c i o n a r s e t o d o p a r a
transformar la Pacha. Es un buen
momento para señalar el inicio de un
nuevo ciclo anual. La Tierra se acerca
al máximo hacia al Sol. El sol sale más
temprano, después de las 4.30 am y
se oculta más tarde, después de las
6.30 pm. Se producen grandes
evaporaciones en la tierra y el mar.
produces intense heat by day and
intense cold by night. In some
places of the mountain, the
temperature falls many grades
below zero by night.
Days become shorter and nights
are longer. That is to say, sun rises
very late after 5.30 am and sets
earlier, before 6 pm.
However, work operations
become intense in order to
process foods. The intense day
heat allows the extraction of the
moisture from grains, tubercles
and any food.
Charki, the chalona (in the
mountain) and cecina (in the
forest) can be processed. Instead
of it the intense night cold allows
to process the Chuño and the
Kalla.
However, this feature does not
allow intense work time. The few
hours of natural light and the
strong cold at sunset forces the
Andean man to seek shelter from
the elements the most part of the
day hours, due to the excessive
heat or the strong cold. Pacha is in
charge of the main task.
Summer solstice- December 21:
The land begins to be prepared,
no vegetal life is seen. Everything
begins to be conditioned to
transform Pacha. This is a good
time to establish the start of a new
cycle of the year. The Earth gets
closest to the Sun. The sun rises
earlier, after 4.30 am and sets
later, after 6.30 pm. Huge
evaporations happen in sea and
earth. It carries an upward air flow
combined with Paraka winds. This
phenomenon produces big
concentrations of clouds plenty of
moisture that arrive from AntisuyuThe Gran solemn Easter of the Sun" - Original of Human Puma de Ayala-

Esto lleva consigo una corriente de
aire ascendente combinado con los
vientos de Paraka. Este fenómeno
produce grandes concentraciones de
nubes cargadas de humedad,
provenientes del Antisuyu o
Amazonía las cuales quedan
atrapadas por la cordillera y la
descargan en los valles interandinos y
en la selva con toda su fuerza. En la
Yunga o costa continental hay clima
cálido y seco. En la amazonía y en la
sierra hay clima húmedo y templado-
cálido.
Las jornadas de trabajo son largas e
intensas desde tempranas horas para
recibir el líquido vital proveniente del
cielo. Es necesario mantener limpias
las acequias y canales de regadío.
Preparar la tierra, para depositar las
semillas.
hierba. En síntesis, es el inicio de
intensas jornadas de trabajo y el
tiempo ayuda pues los días son más

their force in the Interandean
valleys and in the forest. In the
Yunga or continental coast, the
weather is warm and dry. In the
forest and the mountain: wet and
mild-warm.
The work time is long and intense
from early hours to receive the
vital liquid from the sky. It is
necessary to keep the drainage
ditchs and irrigation channels
clean, to prepare the land in order
to deposit the seeds there.
The work is intense to organize
the community tasks in this time
of the year before, during and
after the arrival of the rain. It is
necessary to get up early, even
before the sunrise to keep on
evaluating the weather forecast
and to go to the starting point of
the irrigation channels in order to
clean these.
The land must be prepared before
the sowing of the seeds. Once the
rain starts, its flow must be
managed to distribute the water
to the farms and to care plants
later, to provide land to them
along their growth and remove
the weed. In summary, intense
work journeys begin and time
helps since days are longer,
suitable for work. The runa is
plenty of tasks.
In recent talks, Virgilio Roel
Pineda was discussing the classic
thought to consider the “Kapaq
Inti Raymi” term as a whole as an

largos, aptos para el trabajo. Es el
runa quien tiene hartas tareas.
En conversaciones recientes, Virgilio
Roel Pineda cuestionaba el clásico
pensamiento de considerar el
conjunto del término “Kapaq Inti
Raymi” como una expresión
proveniente de Waman Puma de
Ayala. Argumentaba Virgilio que era
el único (cronista) que lo
mencionaba. Nadie más, antes de él
hacia referencia a tal concepto. Es
más, que la Festividad de diciembre
era una fiesta de menor importancia
inventada por Waman Puma para
agradar a los españoles. La clave,
según Virgilio, era indagar el término
Kapaq y relacionarlo con el sentido
del tiempo. Vale decir el periodo,
mes o killa correspondiente.
Kapaq Raymi. Culminaba este
planteamiento con el sentido
ideológico (místico o religioso)
otorgado al Inti. No era Dios, ni
Creador, introducido por los
españoles, sino sencillamente
nuestro Padre. De suerte que no
había que endiosar el término.
Encaja con su planteamiento
primigenio, el cual dice Virgilio:
“Primer mes: KAPAK RAYMI KILLA
(o diciembre). Kapak Raymi significa
Fiesta Poderosa.
expression from Waman Puma de
Ayala. Virgilio was arguing that he
was the sole (chronicler) who
mentioned it. No one talked about
this concept before him.
Moreover, the December feast
was a less important feast
invented by Waman Puma de
Ayala to please Spaniards.
According to Virgilio, the key is to
seek the Kapaq term and link it
with the time sense, that is to say,
the corresponding period, month
or killa. Thus, it would sound more
like the Great Month (or period)
where certain (agricultural or
livestock) activities were
performed. They were not talking
about Kapaq Inti, but Kapaq
Raymi. This approach ended with
the ideological (mystic or
religious) sense granted to the
Inti. It was not God or Maker,
introduced by Spaniards, but just
Our Father. In such sense, the
term does not require to be
deified.
It fits with his primary approach
when Virgilio says: First month:
KAPAK RAYMI KILLA (or
December). Kapak Raymi means
Mighty Feast. It was one of the
most important where population
expresses its joy since Sun is
plentiful again and life starts again
with new vigor since Apu Inti is the
father of life. The central nucleus
was focused on purinakuy (ritual
visits) to every main waka. All the
population participated and
mainly young men who, for having
arrived to the puberty, must
change their clothes, using a pant
called wara. This ceremony was
called Warachikuy.”
All these arguments lead to forage
in the research Works on theWork for the sowing season of potatoes and oca at december" -Huamán Puma de Ayala

sol”. Waman Puma se refiere a este
mes como “la moderada fiesta del
Ynti Raymi”.
En Diciembre-ritual ambos
personajes principales, varón y mujer
ostentan mensajes en Kellkana. Al pie
del dibujo figura el texto: “La gran
pascua solene del sol”. Reafirma esta
idea en el texto: “capac quiere dezir
rrey, ynti, sol, raymi, gran pascua,
más que Ynti Raymi.”
Quiero destacar que Waman Puma
en la presentación de su segundo
calendario agro-pecuario, se refiere
claramente al concepto cíclico del
tiempo, diferente al europeo. Vale
decir que las cuatro estaciones
clásicas: invierno frío-húmedo;
verano cálido-seco; otoño, cuando
se caen las hojas marchitas;
primavera donde florece y cantan los
pajarillos, no tiene nada que ver en
nuestra realidad.
orden. Lo que otro cronista célebre,
Pachakuti Yamque Salqamaywa
define: “Poqoyqa” y “Chiraoqa”.
Con la ayuda del Licenciado Genaro
Quispe Pineda, podemos traducirlo
Chiraoqa:
época de días claros y noches frías
c o n l a t i e r r a p a r a l i z a d a ,
(“Ueue with the sun in the feast of
the sun”). Waman Puma calls this
month “the moderate feast of Ynti
Raymi”.
In December-ritual, both main
characters, male and female,
show messages in the Kellkana. At
the foot of the draw appears the
text “The great solemn sun
epiphany. Idea reasserted by the
text: “capac means dezir rrey,
ynti, sun, raymi, great epiphany,
more than Ynti Raymi.”
I wish to underline that Waman
Puma in the presentation of his
second agricultural calendar,
clearly refers to the cyclic time
concept, different from the
European one. It is worth to say
that the classic four seasons:
winter cold-wet; summer warm-

with our reality. The matter is

chronicler, Pachakuti Yamque

With the help of Licenciate Genaro

as follows: Poqoyqa: ripening time
thanks to the water, the sun, the
experience and the knowledge,
Chiraoqa: time of clear days and
cold nights with the land stopped,
without producing. (Degree

El Inicio del Wata
Teniendo en cuenta estos datos,
además de la cosmovisión runa, la
pregunta es: ¿En qué momento sería
más lógico señalar el inicio del año?
¿En el solsticio de invierno o Inti
Raymi? O ¿En el solsticio de verano o
Kapaq Raymi?
The start of Wata
Keeping in mind this information,
besides the runa cosmic vision,
the question is What would be the
most logical time to establish the
start of the year? Winter solstice
or Inti Raymi? Or Summer solstice
or Kapaq Raymi?
Other cultures, like Asiatic people,
are used to celebrate the date of
conception of pregnancy as the
birth date of living beings. The
European-central culture is
accustomed to remember the
delivery date.
In the Kapaq Raymi the runa
wakes up to life through the
creative and organized work. It is
the feast of the start of the
agricultural process. It has the
best chance to show it. More day
hours to do it.
In Inti Raymi, the Pacha has the
best chance to show its
transformative and creative
power through cold and heat. It is
the feast of the harvest. The runa
has less chance to show this
capacity. Less work hours.
Let's leave the reader to come to
his/ her own conclusions, but it is
clear that the very spread date of
June 24 as “main date” of the
Andean world in Peru is an “heroic
creation” from the 50's when a
group of indigenists intended to
revaluate a detail of the runa
cosmovision. The coincidence
with the Christian Christmas so
near to the summer solstice,
December 22, comes from many
more years ago, when the catholic
hierarchy, near the Middle Age,
intended to face at cultural level
the “pagan” celebrations of
December solstice, winter in the
north hemisphere and summer in
the south hemisphere.
data de mucho antes. Cuando la
jerarquía católica, alrededor de la
Edad Media, quiso enfrentar
culturalmente a las celebraciones
“paganas” del solsticio de diciembre,
invierno para el hemisferio norte,
verano en el hemisferio sur.

As natives of this Mother Earth,

running was and is still a way to
go beyond the traditional and
ceremonial life. Our ancients
and ancestors have taught us
that the Unity among the
mankind, the nature and the

This is a legacy of our ancestors,
a legacy that says us that this
the time of the Unity, the time to
recognize us as a family again.
We have harmed ourselves a lot

can be healed just by

"¿Como surgió la idea de estas
jornadas?”
En 1992 se formó el consejo
coordinador de la confederación
del Cóndor y el Aguila. Este consejo
fue organizado por diferentes
coordinadores de Jornadas de Paz y

de conocimiento, abalados por sus
comunidades para darles esta voz
internacional. Es el tiempo de
hacerlo por medios pacíficos, para
recobrar nuestra identidad.
Dignificar a toda nuestra gente,
dignificar a toda la familia.
"¿Que signifíca tu título de
Guardian del Fuego?”
Es más que toda una responsa-
bilidad, la de cuidar las ceremonias
de nuestras tradiciones. Al ser
nombrado Guardián del Fuego
debo cuidar para que no se le
agregue nada a estas tradiciones,
mantenerlas tal y como me las
entregaron, para así poder llevarlas
a mi familia, a nuestras gentes, a
nuestros pueblos y de esta manera
reactivar el fuego que está
guardado en el corazón de todos
los seres. Este fuego, el fuego
antiguo que es el mas antiguo de
todos.

this international voice. It is the
time to do it by peaceful means,
to retrieve our identity, to dignify
all our people, to dignify all the
family.
"What does your title of
Keeper of the Fire mean?”
It is more than a full
responsibility, to take care of the
ceremonies of our tradition.
As Keeper of the Fire, I must be
careful in such a way that
nothing is added to these
traditions and to maintain these
as I received these, to carry
these to my family, my people,

Es un tiempo muy importante
ahora, es un tiempo que trae esta
energía, que viene del Universo, y
que está pasando primero por
nosotros. Hay ahora mucha
reactivación; la memoria, en mucha
gente se está reactivando.
Entonces este es un llamado, no del
hombre para el hombre, es un
llamado de la creación, a recordar
que fuimos hechos con un
propósito, con una razón. Y con
una verdadera misión que hemos
olvidado completamente. A lo
mejor como dicen muchos de
nuestros abuelos, quizá esta sea la
última oportunidad que tengamos.
Y cuando llegue esta energía a la

You go out, see and you believe
that it will be very hard indeed.
But there is a solution and to get
it we must join again, to
recognize that we are not better
than nature, we are not better
than any human being. We just
complement it. In this way, we
will recover our place in the
Earth, to retrieve the original
purpose of the reason to be
here, why we are in this way and
why we were created. By
healing ourselves, we can heal
our Mother Earth.
"Why so many voices are
talking now urgently after
so many years of silence?”
The current time is very
important. It is a time that leads
this energy that comes from the
Universe and moves to us first.
There is much reactivation now;
memory is being reactivated in
many people. Then it is a call,
not from the man to the man, it
a call from the creation, to
remember that we were made
with a purpose, a reason. And
for a true mission that we have
fully neglected.
As our ancient relatives say,
maybe this is our last chance.
And when this energy arrives to
the earth, it will shake and it
may throw a new child in such
shaking. Then we must be a
sedative in order to alleviate its
pain and leave something useful
to this new born child,,
something to support, to keep
the memory of the former
knowledge of our ancestors
The goal is above all to join
again to take this responsibility
to clean this so polluted air that
we are breathing, the so dirty
water that we drink, the land
that we have exploited a lot.
Because everybody eats from
this land, breathes this air and
drinks this water. Then it is quite
easy: it is a call for the entire

hermandad. Ahora hay que quitar
el peso que tiene esa fecha, limpiar
ese dolor, esa frustración. Es
posible olvidar ese dolor, dentro de
todo ello hay una enseñanza, para
unos y para otros. Queremos que
sea el día de la raza humana, de la

Debemos volvernos a juntar que es
lo más importante, para que vuelva
a florecer el amor y la armonía”.

"Why was October 12th
chosen as closing date of
the journeys?”
Because it is the date of the
discovery, the conquest, the
facts with which most of our
people identify themselves. But
now we want to talk about the
conquest in such a way that it is
the time to conquer ourselves by
the lines of the heart, by the
brotherhood.
Now we must delete the weight
of this date, to clean such pain,
such frustration. It is possible to
forget such pain, there is a
learning for all of us inside all of
it. We want that this date
belongs to the human race, to
the humility. We will not talk
about it, we will achieve it. We
must join again that is the most
important issue, thus love and
harmony will flourish again.

SENTIMIENTO DEL MUNDOSENTIMIENTO DEL MUNDO FEELING OF THE WORLDFEELING OF THE WORLD
osotros sabemos y entendemos
que lo que está en nuestra
profundidad es, o se dice, w ó u.
Nosotros sabemos sabemos y
estamos floreciendo a nuestra madre
tierra. A los enamoramientos,
entretenimientos, recreaciones y
deleites de la vida, los llamamos:
waynarikuna. A nuestros bailes,
nuestras danzas, nuestra música y
nuestros cantos, que brotan de
PACHA, EL MUNDO, TAMBIÉN ES WAKAQ O WAQAQ.
nuestras profundidades, les llamamos
Waynos ( ó huaynos). A nuestra
música, la llamamos Waqay. Ese
mismo wa, es el de los waqaq.
Así, las waqas, son aquellas que
conversan, llaman y traen, tocan y
sienten, más y mejor, todos los
sentidos, músicas y vientos del
mundo.

We understand what sprouts is, or
it is said, wa (or hua). To tell it in
any way, what sprouts from uku

from w or u (uku), to a (hanan).
And more precisely, what sprouts
from qawapacha, to the present of
life, that is to say, to kay pacha, is
way (or huay).
Thus, the winds that sprout from
the sky are called wayra (huayra).
The flourishing and fertility that
sprout from the depth of the life is
called wayta (ó huayta): Flower.
Thus,
when llamas or alpacas are in its
fertility time, we say that these are

music and our songs that sprout
from our depths we call Waynos

18. decir, son, waqayay.
Pacha, el mundo, tambien puede ser
y es wakaq o waqaq, y lo es cuando
llora, cuando hace música. Lo es
cuando, entre otros aspectos, se hace
el ánimo de Pachakamaq, o es
pachawaq.
mundo. Rostro y sabor del mundo.
Por eso, cuando conmemoramos
algún acontecimiento y llevamos a él
Lakotas, Dakotas, Santi y Yankton o
Nakotas – que viven por los grandes
lagos, en los actuales estados de
Dakota del Norte, Dakota del Sur,
Minesota, Iowa, kansas, Misuri,
Indiana y Michigan, de los Estados
Unidos de Norteamérica, cerca de la

sus áreas.
Por ejemplo dice Alce Negro, “ya que
era seguramente una mujer wakan,
when it cries, when it plays music.
It is when, among other aspects,
the spirit of Pachakamaq is done
or it is pachawaq. This
appearance is looked and seen by
us when we look and see the look
and the sight, that is to say, when
we play and feel, we call and bring
hawapacha or qawapacha. When
it is looked and seen, we look and
see that such big spirit, link, knot
and weave, cry and/ or music of
the world, that means or is in the
qawapacha, means or is in the
qawapacha, because it is
wapacha, that is contained or
seated on it.
The music that is the World, the
cry that is the World, that is to say,
the waqay, the wa, is in
Qawaqpachan. For this reason,
the look of the look, the view of
the view of the qawapacha, is the
cry and the music of the world.
Music, look and vision, from the
look and the vision, from the
world. Face and flavor of the
world.
Therefore, when we celebrate an
event and carry to it all and all our
feelings, our joy sprouts. As it is
say, the feast happens. And thus
that is the face and the flavor of
the world, that looks and sees
itself when there are feasts, when
the world becomes waqaq.
OTHER BROTHER PEOPLES, ALSO

is called so in runasimis known as

So, other peoples from our big

understand it so. For instance, the

una mujer sagrada”, ¡Miren esto y

sagrado, -lilla wakan-, y deben

empujar. El, o lo, que empuja. Tal y
como lo hace el bisonte.
Alce Negro, refiriéndose a la Pipa
sagrada, dice, “…con ella en los
inviernos por llegar ustedes enviarán
nuestra voz a Wakan Tanka, vuestro
abuelo y padre”. Y dirigiéndose a
Wakan -Tanka, le dice, “Tunkashila
Wakan-Tanka, Abuelo, Gran
deseamos aumentar nuestro coraje
is something sacred - -lilla wakan-
, and you must always consider
her so.”
On the other hand, the bison is
called tatanka in its language. The
bison is one of the most important
beings in life. It provides them
food, home, dress and shelter.
Feast and joy. In many cases, they
do, or did their lives following the
trail of the bisons.
In it, like in the remaining living
beings, there is life, there is the
World. But as tatanka belongs to
those that sustain all, or almost
all life, their life, is quite suitable to
be within, and to look and see, the
world and it is considered so by
them.
Likewise, when we listen as
chankas, when we listen in the
runasimis known as kechwas,
tankay, or tanqay, what we are
said and told, is to push. He or it
that pushes. Just like the bison
Black Elk, talking about the sacred
Pipe, says, “… with it in the
incoming winters you will send our
voice to Wakan Tanka, your
grandfather and father” And
talking to Wakan -Tanka, he says,
“Tunkashila Wakan-Tanka,
Grandfather, Great Spirit…”
“Many reasons may lead the
human being to retire to the top of
the mountains to implore. Some
people have received visions in
their childhood without having
expected it, in this case, they
implore to understand better. We
also implore when we wish to
increase our courage before a big
proof such as the dance of the
sun, or to prepare us in the way of
the war. Sometimes it is implored
to ask some favors to the Great
Spirit, like the healing of a patient,
we also implore to thank to the
Great Spirit for some gifts we have
received from it. But the most
important reason to implore is
undoubtedly to link with
everyone, to understand that all of
them are our relatives and then, in
their name, we pray the Great
S p i r i t t o g i v e u s h i s
understanding, he who is the
source of everything and is the
older of all.”
For Sioux, the Great Spirit, the
great soul of the World is Wakan
Tanka. What we also could listen

alentador del ánimo del mundo. Gran

También en otros pueblos de

procedimiento de fechación de las
mismas a partir de dichos principios,
que ha demostrado ser, por lo
menos, tan exacto como el carbono
14.
Lógicamente, ninguna de esas waqas
es un adoratorio, templo o fortaleza,
como han sido vistos y calificado por
el invasor. Calificativos con los cuales
ha justificado las persecuciones y
destrucción, así como supuestas
victorias militares. Ello, esa visión, es
sólo la manera como el invasor
civilizado las ve, por la vida de
carencias y ambiciones que lleva, en

vivos.
Este asunto de la manera como nos
ve el civilizado podría no
importarnos, pero resulta que el
accionar que de él se desprende nos
afecta en diferentes grados y por ello
es conveniente tenerlo presente.
Como decíamos, esta manera de
tocar y sentir, de mirar y de ver, de
escuchar y oír, de perfumar y oler, de
tocar y traer, es difícil, sino imposible,
de ser entendida por los religiosos y
científicos de la civilización cristiana
centro europea contemporánea,
pues supone poner al descubierto su
sentir y saber limitado, y la violencia
ciega ejercida contra dichos lugares y
seres, cuando han acudido a buscar
en estos, sólo oro, plata, “tesoros”, o
títulos de “descubridores” y, a
nombre de ello, los han destruido,
por lo menos parcialmente, o cuando
han intentado, como lo han hecho
antes y lo siguen haciendo hoy día,
establecer en dichos wakaq o waqaq,
sus iglesias, templos y/o adoratorios.
Es tan brutal este comportamiento
como imaginar que se destruyeran las
universidades, los llamados centros
de investigación, de capacitación y de
cultura, o sus laboratorios,
computadoras, libros, salas de
conciertos, orquestas e instrumentos
musicales, con la finalidad de
encontrar y extraer de ellos, algún
elemento “puro”, como por ejemplo,
el cobre o el hierro, y además,

aspects, he makes a procedure to
date these from such principles. It
has proved to be, at least, as
accurate as Carbon 14.
Logically, no one of these waqas is
a temple, church or fortress, as
these were seen and qualified by
the invader. Qualifiers with which
persecutions and destruction as
well as military victories were
justified. This, such view, is just
the way how the civilized invader
sees these, due to his life of
scarcity and ambitions, in
adoration, in pretension, in
religion and war. Ours are centers,
nucleus of wisdom, link,
v e r s i f i c a t i o n , d a n c e ,
musicalization, knotting and
weave, with the remaining living
beings.
This issue of the way how the
civilized man sees us could not
care us, but it comes that his
actions affects us in different
ways, Therefore, it is convenient
to remind it.
As we were telling, this way to
play and feel, to look and see, to
listen and hear, to scent, and
smell, to touch and bring, is hard,
if not impossible, to be
understood by the priests and
scientists of the center European
contemporaneous Christian
civilization, since it supposes to
discover their limited feelings and
knowledge, and the blind violence
exerted against these places and
beings, when they arrived to them
just to look for gold, silver,
“ t r e a s u r e s ” o r t i t l e s o f
“discoverers” and, on its behalf,
these were destroyed at least
partially by them, or when they
have intended, like they did it
before and keep on doing now, to
establish in these wakaq or
waqaq, their churches and / or
temples.
This behavior is so brutal as to
imagine that the universities, the
so called research, training and
culture centers, or its laboratories,
computers, books, concert rooms,
o r c h e s t r a s a n d m u s i c a l
instruments were destroyed in
order to find and extract from
them some “pure” element, for
example, the copper or the iron,

wakaq, waqaq, o maestros humanos.
Ejemplo de ello son las persecuciones
religiosas en los países civilizados, la
caza de brujas y eliminación de magos
– la última de las cuales de manera
abierta y masiva fue ejecutada en
Alemania hace menos de un siglo-, así
como la extirpación de idolatrías
imaginada y ejecutada por la Iglesia
Católica, y que nuestros pueblos han
sufrido, y sufre todavía en la
actualidad, en carne propia. Algo
p a r e c i d o , q u e n o a b a r c a
exclusivamente a la actividad de los
religiosos, pero en la cual ellos tienen
un rol sobresaliente, es la
persecución, abierta o velada, de
nuestros curanderos, brujos, paqos y
otros “maestros”, bajo el pretexto de
la carencia de base científica, falta de
profesionalización o de títulos,
supuesta “charlatanería”, o
imaginaria ejecución de rituales
“macabros”.
Similares características tienen así
mismo, la sustitución, o bautizo, con
nombres católicos, o de santos, o la
fundación “española” de nuestros
pueblos y diversos lugares pre-
existentes, la sustitución, o intento de
sustitución, por cultos católicos, de
nuestras fiestas y conmemoraciones.
and besides, they measure the
value of these objects by the
copper or iron found inside them.
To the civilized priests and
scientists, the ambition, the
pretension and the lack of sense,
among others for gold and their
desire of purity, neatness and
uniformity, have lead them to act
in this way. Unfortunately, these
are a part of the symptoms of
their disease.
The similar behavior has
happened and happens, still in
our days, with the wakaq, waqaq,
or human masters. An example
of it are the religious
persecutions in civilized
countries, the witch hunting and
the elimination of wizards – this
last was performed in an open
and massive way in Germany less
than a century ago – and also the
extirpation of idolatries, imagined
and performed by the Catholic
Church and that was suffered and
is still suffered by our populations
now. Something similar, that do not
involve solely the priests activity,
but where they play an outstanding
role, is the open or veiled
persecution of our herb doctors,
sorcerers, paqos and other
“masters” under the pretext of the
lack of scientific base, lack of
professionalism or titles, supposed
“gossip” or the imaginary
execution of “macabre” rituals.
In the same way, similar
c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s h a v e t h e
substitution or baptism, with
catholic or Saint names or the
“Spanish” foundation of our towns
and different and previously
existing place, the substitution, or
the intention to substitute by
catholic cults, our feasts and
commemorations. These are
behaviors, or missions, or
evangelizations created by fear,
scorn, and loss of sense towards
life, human beings and their
wisdom, their or our way to be and
know.
The qualification of waqas made by
the civilized ones is not just a way
how they see us, but a way to
justify the repression and the
persecutions, its destruction, as
well as to justify the war and the
figured military victories that do
not belong to our spirit or our way
to be.

PACHAKUTI DE LA ADVERSIDAD
Cuando llegaron los invasores, el
QOSQO era una hermosa obra de
arquitectos e ingenieros de la

mundo trabajó y moldeó la piedra
como lo hicieron los Inkas. Por eso

las construcciones de la ciudad en
sus cimientos más importantes han
sobrevivido a la barbarie de
incendiarios y saqueadores
incalificables.
ejemplo? O las estructuras de
piedras que cimientan el templo de
korikancha?.
No, tuvieron que encontrar
otro modo de intentar
esconder la huella de sus
crímenes. Entonces, la
astucia de los curas funcionó
de maravilla. Aprovecharon
las estructuras cimentadas y
la mano de obra esclavizada
de los inkas sometidos por
las armas, para construir sus
templos y estructuras de su
arquitectura europea,
sobre los dichos muros,
para tener en pie una
arquitectura colonial que no
podía sostenerse ni ser lo
que es, sin la presencia

incluso a mas de 500 años de
adversidades.
EL INTI RAYMI EN EL QOSQO
Y como no pudieron destruirnos
por completo, aquí estamos,
renaciendo como el ave de fénix, en
un proceso largo y complejo que
tiene también en la celebración del
Inti Raymi, un momento importante

revitalización de nuestra cultura

important basis, have survived
to the barbarity of unqualified

Spaniards were seeking to erase
from the face of the earth every
trace of culture that survived to
their ethnocide. But, do you
imagine Pizarro and their
companions trying to remove the
stones that are the basis of
Saqsayhuaman or the stone
structures that support
Korikancha temple, for instance?
They didn't have to find another
way to hide the trail of their
crimes. Then, the cleverness of
priest worked marvelously. They
took advantage from the
structures and the slave's
manpower of inkas subdued by
the arms to build their churches
and structures with European
architecture over these walls, to
keep on standing a

descendientes de los Inkas, hemos
vuelto los ojos a nuestra fe sagrada y
recuperamos nuestra devoción a la
Pachamama, al Tayta Inti y la Mama

todos quienes formando parte del
concierto sagrado de la vida, ponen
de manifiesto la importancia de esa
sacralidad.
Todos los años el 24 de Junio (fecha
aún discutible) se realiza en la
emplanada de nuestra Waka de
Saqsayhuamán, la celebración
central de la festividad del Inti

realmente nos brinde
salud y felicidad cotidiana,
habiendo recuperado nuestros
valores espirituales y morales
fundamentales como el ayni y la

Luego de mas de medio siglo de
perseverante actividad de las
entidades culturales cusqueñas,
para hacer posible las celebraciones
del Inti Raymi en el QOSQO, a

presentación como atractivo
turístico, el resultado ha sido de que
año a año hay un esfuerzo por

of the Inkas, look towards our
sacred faith and retrieve our
devotion to Pachamama, Tayta
Inti and Mama Killa, like the Apus
Huamanis and all those who
express the importance of this
sacred character, as part of the
sacred concert of the life.
Every June 24th (still pending
date), the main celebration of

how much we have reached in
our authenticity and respect to
procedures and the sincerity of
the devotion of the public, the
fact is what we are doing and we
will reach slowly the sense and
authenticity that may return to
our lives that way to be and
understand the world, that really
provide us health and daily
happiness, having recovered our
basic spiritual and moral values,
for instance, the ayni
and the minka.
After more than a half
century of persevering
activities of the cultural
entities of Cuzco to
make the Inti Raymi
celebrations in QOSQO

involves this ceremony.

To the friends and visitors who

conservando nuestra memoria y saberes.
nuestros hermanos/as.

padre y me dijo: “ No aprenderás a
tocar esto, con él solo anduvieras
bebiendo como borracho, si
supieras tocar esto. No lo
aprenderás”, diciendo esto
solía esconder el violín y
destemplado.
Pero, mi padre tenía como 5
alumnos que solo ellos venían
a mi casa a aprender el violín.
En una ocasión a mi padre lo
contrataron por seis meses
en un lugar llamado Wataqa, y
seis meses se fue a tocar en
ese lugar, cuando aun era yo
un niño.
Entonces, cuando se fue mi
padre, como sus alumnos
seguían viviendo diariamente

circunstancias yo aprendí a
tocar, con ellos aprendí.
Cuando mi padre volvió de su
viaje, ya me encontró tocando bien
el violín.
QAWAQ.- Lo aprendiste muy
rápido
Máximo Damian.- Dicen que
suele ser así, los buenos alumnos de
los maestros aprender rápido.
QAWAQ.- Sería por que tu padre
era un maestro.
Máximo Damian.- Por lo que mi
padre era un maestro. en efecto.

muchos no aprendieron, solo uno o
