2. Curcumin, a yellow component of turmeric or curry
powder, however, is an exception. Almost 2000
papers have been published on the subject. Its
mechanism of action can be compared to inhibitors
of cyclooxygenase-2 (Celebrex), HER2 (Herceptin),
TNF (Enbrel, Humira, Remicade), EGFR (Erbitux
and Iressa), and vascular endothelial cell growth
factor (Avastin), all of which have been approved
for human use by the FDA.
3. Turmeric’s main ingredient, curcumin, has been shown
to have a wide array of antioxidant and anti-
inflammatory effects. Indeed, eating turmeric in their
daily curries appears to be one of the main reasons
that elderly citizens of India have very low rates of
Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin incorporates itself into
cell membranes and makes them more orderly. This
allows the membranes to more effectively control the
flow of substances in and out of cells, which improves
cells' resistance to infection and malignancy.

6. Curcumin is found to be effective in preventing the inflammation induced
increase in rat liver enzymes such as serum glutamic axaloacetic
transamilase and serum glutamic pymvic transamilase [Srimal & Dhawan
1973; Susan & Rao 19911. Curcumin is a potent scavenger of active oxygen
species including superoxide, hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide, which are
implicated in inflanimation. Studies show that it is a good scavenger of
hydroxyl radical at high concentrations but at low concentrations activated
the Fenton system to generate an increased amount of hydroxyl radical.
