I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if I had never met my Chinese literature
teacher, because her kindness changed my personality completely. It was back in the last
two years of elementary school when I was like a lost boat seeking a lighthouse in the dark
night. I didn’t know which direction to develop my strength. I had low self-esteem due to
my mom’s strict parenting policy at home. I was hiding myself behind reading books in
school until my Chinese literature teacher, Wong, showed up and changed me. Wong told
me one day in school that she liked my writing assignments, and encouraged me to keep
working on my writing. She also promised that she will give me support whenever I need.
With not only her guidance but also my effort, my articles afterwards were always
displayed as good examples in front of the whole class. Meanwhile, I read more books in
order to absorb both the new knowledge and writing skills. Gradually, I became confident,
and started to recognise my strength in school. Also, I became active in school and made
many friends. In my high school years, I won many national literature competition awards,
and got paid for writing articles for different newspapers. Thanks to Wong, I was totally
changed and found my confidence as well as life-long hobby. Now, as a teacher, I always
encourage my students to find their strength.
