1. PhD student: Ultrafast spectroscopy on quantum interference effects in charge transfer
Project description
We seek a talented and ambitious PhD student for a challenging multidisciplinary research
project on specific quantum mechanical effects in charge transfer studied by ultrafast
spectroscopy and theory. The project aims at the study of charge transfer in donor-bridge-
acceptor systems using time-resolved spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The
use of single molecules as functional electronic components represents the ultimate size limit
for electronics. Therefore, the study of charge transport on the single molecule level is of
large fundamental en practical interest. On this small scale, quantum mechanical effects such
as quantum interference will play an important role and should be considered explicitly.
The project is part of a FOM program on the effects of quantum interference effects in single
molecules. In this program, five groups from Delft and Leiden from a variety of disciplines
(organic synthesis, single molecule conductance, time resolved spectroscopy and theory)
collaborate to gain fundamental knowledge on quantum effects in single molecules. For these
studies a variety of π-conjugated molecules is needed that will be designed specifically for
studying these effects. The project described here will be performed in the Optoelectronic
Materials section in the group of Dr. Ferdinand Grozema at the Department of Chemical
Engineering of TU Delft.
Requirements
The successful candidate should hold a MSc degree in physical chemistry or physics and a
strong motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team of chemists and physicists. A
background in time-resolved spectroscopy and/or computational chemistry is a strong
advantage but not an absolute necessity. Very good spoken and written English is mandatory.
