Studying The History Of Taekwondo
1. Many people wonder how Taekwondo has gained so much
popularity over the past decade. Well the answer lies in
the history of Taekwondo and how it was able to
transform from a bloody killing style to a famous sport.
Nowadays, Korea has become extremely obsessed with
this martial art that most schools are even required to
teach it. This is simply because it has already become a
part of their culture and lifestyle.
2. This art was first developed during the Three Kingdoms
Period of Korea in which the kingdoms of Goguryeo,
Baekje, and Sila were at war with each other for the union
of Korea. The earliest form of this style was known as
Subak in which all soldiers were to take up during their
training. They had to learn hand strikes, kicking, wrestling,
and submissions. From this ancient art, Taekkyeon, which
is the forefather of Taekwondo was born.
3. Taekkyeon is said to have been the foundation of the
devastating kicking moves that people see nowadays. By
training in this combat style, warriors from Sila modified it
and added more hand techniques. These warriors became
known as the Hwarang and eventually set up a military
academy called the Hwarang Do. Aside from martial arts,
students of this academy were taught Confucian ethics,
Buddhist doctrines, history, and tactics.
4. During the Japanese Occupation in 1910, Korea was
invaded and was under an authoritarian rule. Because of
this, all of forms of resistance like martial arts were
completely banned from the country. The goal of the
Japanese was for the Korean citizens to adapt the lifestyle
of Japan. One of their methods was to introduce Japanese
fighting styles like Karate so that traditional Korean
combat styles would be extinct.
5. In 1945, the Japanese rule finally ended and traditional
martial arts thrived once more. It was during this period
that many schools with different styles were built. Most
schools decided to teach the traditional Subak or
Taekkyeon but there were more modern instructors who
fused Korean styles with Japanese fighting techniques.
6. Now Korean combat arts really burst into the scene during
the middle of the Korean War in 1952. A huge fighting
exhibit was held at that time to show the public how
powerful the fighters of Korea really are. All of the fighters
there were indeed amazing, performing acrobatic stunts
and breaking concrete with their bare hands. It was only in
1955 that the government decided to unite all the martial
arts to form one main fighting style called Taekwondo.
7. In the 1960s, the fame of this martial art spread to many
different countries until it became extremely popular even
among foreigners. Instructors even set up their own
schools in other countries. Due to the immense popularity,
the World Taekwondo Federation was born in 1973 to
facilitate this new worldwide sport.
8. So as one can see, the history of Taekwondo shows how a
deadly unarmed style can become a very famous sport. It
has become so popular that it was even added to the
Olympics. This proves that even a bloody combat style can
become a well loved activity.
