What's new and what's coming
Summer Reading Programs
Improvements in Technology Center
New flooring and redesigned dividers at the
computer stations have changed the look of this
busy area in Adult Services. The sleeker profile of the
stations has helped air flow and improved visibility
for assisting customers.
Fun décor and Activity Center facelift
In Youth Services, children can read on the bench
under a life-sized tree or play in community-themed
vehicles including a school bus and police car. Also,
the Activity Center is being renovated to provide
expanded space for programs and a more inviting
entry with artwork of a fire truck.
New HVAC system for 1981 building
Installation began April 15 on a replacement heating
and cooling system for the meeting rooms, Friends
Shoppe, Reserve Room, Media Department and
New Book shelving. Even though those areas will
be without air conditioning during the 3-month
project, four HVAC systems in the library continue in
working order.

Books and Movies this spring Buzzards roost in
Central College trees
In the 1970s, articles in the PublicOpinion
and the ColumbusDispatch called attention
to the buzzards of Central College. Local
residents were invited to go to the east
parking lot below Hoover Dam to see
the nightly show as the Central College
buzzards circled overhead and headed
toward their
nighttime
roosting spot.
According to local
lore they have
been coming to
that area since the 1820s when residents
would butcher animals in a nearby ravine.
It was not unusual to count 125-150
buzzards in the trees in the 1970s. But the
numbers decreased dramatically in the next
decade. Even without 100 buzzards circling
overhead, the Hoover Dam area is popular
with bird watchers today.

4. Exciting enhancements are underway
Directions
Notes from Library Director Don W. Barlow
New sculpture sprouts
on front lawn
It's a daisy! The title of the newly
installed sculpture is Whirl-A-Daisy
and the artist is Nicholas Sikma, a
resident ofWhite Lake, Michigan.
The piece was selected for one-year
exhibition at the library due to its
bright appearance and the fact
that the daisy wheel turns. Skima
says that his work is often about
the interaction of objects. Also, the
theme of a daisy fits nicely with our
Children’s Garden planted across the
front of the building. This is our third
year to host one of the sculptures in
the Public Art inWesterville Spaces
program.
As you can see from the pictures and write-up on page one, the library is enhancing our
look and creating new opportunities at our facility.
The Youth Services Department is transforming to a new community-type atmosphere
to better foster early childhood development. The new environment will help stimulate
children’s imagination and kindle their creativity. Youth will be able to take greater
advantage of our expanded Homework Help Center. For teens, the Teen Center booths
will be replaced with new Internet café countertops, and additional wireless computers
will be put into place.
You may already have noticed the completed renovation in the Technology Center. Also in
the Adult area, over the next couple of weeks, you will find added electrical outlets and a
USB connection on most study tables, additional comfortable seating and teleconference
capabilities in the group study rooms.
We appreciate your patience during the long process of replacing one of our aging HVAC
systems. During the next couple of months, certain areas of the building will be warm, if
not hot, but we hope to have the new system up and running by July 12th.
It’s due to your support that these improvements are possible. If you haven’t stopped in
recently, come and see these exciting changes. We look forward to your visit.
