The hook hand and peg leg wasn’t to let people know you
were a dangerous pirate!
in fact, in the 1500’s the “pirate” prosthetics was
considered to be a huge step in the medical field.
the hook provided more usage, while the peg
leg didn’t require a crutch.
“The Roman scholar Pliny the Elder(23-79 A.D.) wrote of a
Roman general in the Second Punic War(218-210 B.C.)
who had a right arm amputated. He had an iron hand
fashioned to hold his shield and was able to return to
battle.”

A 3000 year old mummy was found. He also had a prosthetic toe.
This prosthetic helped this guy do basic things like walk.
Making it look like a real toe, was believed to give them a sense of wholeness.
