IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY 3/28/2015
2. INTRODUCTION
PRODUCTIVITY is simply the ability to produce.
It can also be seen as the rate at which a company produces
goods and services, in relation to the amount of materials and
number of employees needed.
Information Technology (IT) is a term that encompasses all
forms of technology used to create, store, exchange, and use
information in its various forms (business data, voice
conversations, still images, motion pictures, multimedia
presentations, and other forms; including those not yet
conceived).
IT is one of the important resources for increasing the economic3/28/2015IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY

3. INTRODUCTION (Cont’d)
Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is the fundamental
rethinking and radical redesign of business. It is a process that
aims to achieve dramatic improvements in critical measures of
performance-cost, quality, capital service, speed and ultimately,
productivity.
BPR is traditionally aimed at automating the pre-existing process
in an organization.
This research identified and described the impact of IT
investment on productivity at Telecommunication Company of
Tehran (TCT). Furthermore, the situation of BPR approach in
TCT as a method to improve the IT influences, was evaluated.3/28/2015IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY

4. WHAT WAS DONE
The research was carried out using the Telecommunication Company of
Tehran (TCT), Iran as a case study.
The Telecommunication Company of Tehran (TCT), is one of the powerful
companies that serve communication services and infrastructure. It is the
main Telecommunication company in Iran.
The research investigated the Productivity measurement models.
The research measured and analyzed the impact of IT investments at TCT.
The research also investigated the Business Process Reengineering (BPR)
approach in TCT, as a complementary investment for improving the IT
influences.
The research calculated the productivity during the specific period of time
at TCT.
The research also calculated the variant subjects of Information 3/28/2015IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY

5. METHODOLOGY OF THE RESEARCH
The research work was directed in two phases. The first investigated the
impact of IT in TCT. While the second was concerned with the importance
of BPR as an IT investment in TCT.
The research work is an explanatory research.
Also, the research work is a quantitative research.
The study used both primary and secondary data.
Archival method and different documents were used to investigate the
impact of IT on productivity In the first phase.
In order to reveal the importance of BPR approach as a complementary
investment for improving IT influences, the appropriate questionnaires
were distributed through Employees and Experts of TCT in the second
phase of the study.

6. WHAT THE RESEARCH DISCOVERED
Data analysis was directed in two phases. The first phase
analysis not only indicated the positive relationship between IT
investment and productivity at TCT but also exposed that the
positive return of IT investment is higher than non IT
investment.
In the second phase, the BPR factors were tested by the experts
and employees of TCT. So a meaningful difference between the
present situation and the desired situation of TCT were found,
based on BPR approach.
Ultimately, IT investment showed its positive impacts at TCT.
Besides, BPR was identified as the necessary complementary
investment to develop, support and stabilize the positive IT 3/28/2015IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY

7. WHAT IT MEANS
From the results, it can be deducted that, IT enhances productivity
as follow:
1. At the economic level, by:
Generating another source of income – thereby enhancing
sustainable economic development.
Minimizing poverty in the region by creating additional
employment opportunities.
Promoting e-commerce. Buying and selling of goods and
services over the internet tends to enhance creativity.
Promoting smaller and more accurate inventories.
Creating room for faster information flow. 3/28/2015IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY

2. At the industrial level, by:
Promoting the degree and the efficiency of the work
organization.
Generating and Enhancing better information about customers.
– Know Your Customers (KYC).
Increased firm size.
Increased return on investments (ROI). Tends to profit
maximization.
Enhanced customer satisfaction.
Generating value added services. 3/28/2015IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY

9. WHAT GAPS ARE LEFT TO BE FILLED
The research investigated the impact of IT investment at
Telecommunication Company of Tehran.
For future research, researchers should investigate this approach in the
private telecommunication sectors or other governmental companies not
only in Iran, but also other pats of the world to compare the findings.
Furthermore, economic view is the approach that directed this study, it is
suggested that future researchers investigate the impact of IT from other
perspectives, such as influences of IT in creating value for customers or
impact of IT on other resources like labors. It is also useful to investigate
the impact of IT in organizational culture.
IT readiness in companies is another issue that is suggested for future
research.
This research has focused on BPR approach as a complementary
investment. It is useful that future researchers evaluate other 3/28/2015IMPACT OF I.T ON PRODUCTIVITY
