1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 It is the aim of this Method Statement to define and describe the equipment and safety procedures which are to be employed
by the crane lifting company to carry out the lifting operation. The operation will be carried out in accordance with the following
Legislation & Approved Codes of Practice.
BS7121 Safe Use of Cranes (part 1) 2006 General & (part 3) 2000 Mobile Cranes
Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 - Noise at Work Regulations 2006
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007 - Working at Height Regulations 2007
1.2 THE LIFT
The lift will be carried out in line with the guidance contained in BS7121.
1.3 SITE INSPECTION
The Appointed Person shall carry out a detailed site inspection to ascertain the full requirements of the Site Manager and
determine the required crane capacity and make an assessment as far as possible/practicable of any other site issues such as
access, ground conditions, overhead obstructions, local authority interaction etc.
1.4 THE APPOINTED PERSON
The Appointed Person who has prepared the Method Statement carries full responsibility for the safe completion of all works
carried out during the operation. It is the responsibility of the Appointed Person to ensure that the Crane Supervisor is
adequately briefed on the contents of this Method Statement.
1.5 THE CRANE SUPERVISOR
Prior to the commencement of the works, the Crane Supervisor must ensure that all site personnel are adequately briefed on
the contents of this Method Statement. This briefing shall take the form of a short ‘Toolbox Talk’. The Crane Supervisor must
liaise with the Appointed Person should site circumstances require material change to the methods to be employed during the
operation.
1.6 THE CRANE OPERATOR or OPERATORS
All lifting operators or any operators working on behalf of the lifting company shall be fully trained and competent on the
machines they operate and will have undergone full manufactures induction and training.
1.7 PERSONNEL
All lifting personnel or any personnel working on behalf of the lifting company will be fully trained and hold the relevant
certification for the role they undertake on the day of operation. Any non lift company personnel or personnel supplied by the
client that will be involved in the lifting operation and taking on a specified role will be required to produce the relevant
certification to the Appointed Person or Crane Supervisor prior to the commencement of the operation. Failure to produce the
required certification will result in the suspension and possible cancellation of the lifting operation.
1.8 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
All lifting personnel will be supplied with standard PPE which consists of, Hard Hat, Safety Boots, Overalls, Gloves, Hi-Vis (and
Safety Goggles if required).
The Site Manager must inform all Personnel of any specific requirements in advance of the operation date.
1.9 CERTIFICATION
Copies of statutory test certification and inspection reports will be available for inspection prior to the lifting operation taking
place.
2 GENERAL CONDITIONS
2.1 The Site Manager will provide details of all items to be lifted, including weights, dimensions and any specific lifting tackle
requirements. The Site Manager is responsible for the structural integrity of all loads to be lifted including any specified lifting
points or slinging recommendations.
2.2 The Site Manager must ensure safe access to and egress from site for all lifting personnel and vehicles, and also ensure that the
working area is clear of all obstructions to allow the safe assembly and working of the crane. The Site Manager will be
responsible for supplying suitable floodlighting where necessary or when required.
The Site Manager must carry out any enabling works required prior to crane arrival.
2.3 The Site Manager must ensure that the area where the crane is to stand/operate is firm and level and this it is capable of
withstanding the expected loadings that will be imposed upon it.
2.4 The Site Manager must ensure that any Traffic Management (not supplied by the lift company) is in place prior to the
positioning of the crane.
2.5 Any personnel not directly concerned with the lift must be kept out of the crane assembly and working area. The working area
should be cordoned off with barrier tape, temporary fencing or otherwise secured, to prevent non lift associated personnel or
the general public from entering the lifting area.
2.6 The Crane Supervisor shall make himself known to all relevant personnel on site, and conduct a ‘Toolbox Talk’ prior to
commencing operations. The Site Manager should arrange for a site specific induction for the lifting personnel prior to the
commencement of work. The Site Managers Site Risk Assessment, which identified any site hazards should be made available
and brought to the attention of the lifting personnel.
2.7 All cranes to be left unattended for a period, shall be left in safe condition (jib retracted or laid down if possible), with not load
on the crane hook. Cranes shall be shut down and isolated as per manufacturer’s instructions, secured and locked. Under no
circumstances shall the crane be moved for lifting purposes if not under the instruction of the Crane Supervisor.
2.8 In the event that specified cranes or lifting tackle, cannot be supplied on the day of operation due to operational issues,
breakdown or any unforeseen circumstances. The lift company has the discretion to supply cranes or equipment that is of a
suitable alternative to that detailed in this Method Statement, (at no extra cost to the client). In the event of this situation
arising, the Appointed Person and the Site Manager will be notified. The AP/Crane Supervisor will ensure that any changes do
not infringe on the factors or safety within this method statement.
3 WEATHER CONDITIONS
3.1 In the event of extreme weather conditions the lift company may need to suspend the lifting operation until such time as it is
safe to proceed. Although the safe workable wind speed varies from crane to crane, as a guide, the maximum wind speed at
which lifting operations can take place is 10 metres per second, (22mph).
In the event that man riding duties are required the maximum workable wind speed reduces to 7 metres per second, (16mph).
Please note that local conditions and the safety of personnel may dictate the Crane Supervisor and Crane Operator have to
suspend lifting operations at a lower wind speed than specified in this Method Statement. In addition, lifting operations must
stop during storms or when there is a risk of lightning strikes.
4 GROUND CONDITIONS
4.1 The lift company will endeavour to advise the client regarding ground conditions, after a visual inspection (or where
necessary/provided, perusal of a client ground survey report) and supply suitable plates, mats where required. The Client is
required to advise the lifting company of any known underground services, voids or vaults as state in BS7121. Safe Use of
Cranes.
5 OPERATION OUTLINE

If a “Supervisor Only Contract Lift” is the chosen option, it is imperative that any personnel supplied by the client, be fully
trained, competent and experienced in lifting operations and hold current, valid and legislatively required certification, which
must be available for our Appointed Person or Crane Supervisor to inspect prior to commencement of the lifting operation.
Any personnel supplied by the Site Manager must work under the instruction of the Appointed Person or Crane Supervisor.
Failure to comply with the above will results in the suspension of lifting until the aforementioned is adhered to.

5.4 WEATHER CONDITIONS

7 LOAD & RADIUS DETAILS

7.2 LIFTING POINTS
It is the Site Managers/Plant Managers responsibility to ensure that any manufactured Lifting Points are certified & tested for
lifting purposes. This also applies to specified slinging methods where no lifting points are provided.

7.3 LIFTING TACKLE
Please Note:
In the event that the specified lifting tackle cannot be supplied on the day of operation due to operational changes, breakdown
or any unforeseen circumstances. The crane company can supply and use lifting tackle/equipment that is of a suitable
alternative to that detailed above. In the event of this situations arising, the Appointed Person and Site Manager should be
notified. The AP/Crane Supervisor will ensure that any changes do not infringe on the factors of safety within this Method
Statement.
All Lifting Tackle certification to be available on site.
The Crane Supervisor shall inspect all Lifting Tackle prior to each use.
Any Lifting Tackle supplied by the Site Manager to be fit for purpose, fully certified and in good condition.
Any damaged tackle shall be marked “Not For Use” and returned to the depot for disposal.
Nylon Slings must be protected from sharp edges using sling guards or suitable packaging.

9 CRANE SET UP PROCEDURE

9.1 The crane, together with the associated operating crew will arrive on site at the specified and agreed
date and time.
9.2 Crane Supervisor will meet the Site Manager and carry out “Toolbox Talk” with all personnel involved in
the lifting operation. Once this has been completed, all involved in the lifting operation must sign the
register for this Method Statement. Any site inductions that are required will also be carried out.
9.3 Any traffic management, ancillary pans, mats or temporary roadways etc that are required to be
positioned by hi-ab or other means, prior to the crane or cranes manoeuvring into position, will be
done under the instruction of the Crane Supervisor.
9.4 The crane will then manoeuvre into position as shown on attached drawing. All manoeuvring to be
carried out under the guidance of a member of the lifting crew.
9.5 The crane will then commence set-up procedure and rig to the configuration stated in section 8.1. All
personnel assisting with rigging will be under the guidance of the crane operator, at all times. The set-
up procedure will be carried out as per crane manufactures manual.
9.6 Upon completion of the rigging procedure, the crane operator will carry out procedural safety and
computer checks, implementing any specific operational requirements, i.e. slewing restrictions, short
rig configurations or fly jib configurations.
9.7 The Crane Supervisor will then carry out a radio communications check between the crane operator
and the lifting crew.
9.8 Hook block of crane will then be lowered and required lifting tackle placed on the hook, Lift Supervisor
will ensure that the correct lifting tackle has been selected.
9.9 The crane operator will then be instructed to hoist lifting tackle clear of any obstructions and position
the crane ready for the first required lift. Any delivery/removal vehicles will now be positioned adjacent
to the crane as per attached drawings, ready for work to commence.
10 LIFTING PROCEDURE
10.1 Slinger/Signallers will issue instructions via hand signals or two-way radios to the crane operator to
position the crane over first required lift, Slinger/Signallers will plumb the boom head, directly over the
load or set short to allow for jib deflection where necessary.
10.2 The Slinger/Signallers will instruct crane operator, the lower the hooks with lifting tackle to allow
Slinger/Signaller to attach lifting tackle to load.

10.3 All slinging will be carried out by fully trained, certificated and experienced slingers.
Slinging methods adopted will be as specified by load manufacturers, using specified lifting points or, in
the event that no manufacturer instruction or lifting points are provided, our Slingers will work to the
Appointed Persons recommendations and to Health & Safety executives guidelines for safe slinging for
lifting loads, (see section 7.2 & 7.3).
The lifting tackle used, will be as stated in section 7.3 and will have current test certification available.
10.4 Upon completion of the attachment of the lifting tackle to the load, the Slinger/Signaller will instruct
the operator by hand signals or radios, to hoist up to take the slack out of the lifting tackle. Once the
lifting tackle has started to take the weight and has tightened the Slinger/Signaller will instruct operator
or operators to stop hoisting. The Slinger/Signaller will then carry out a check around the load to ensure
that the lifting tackle is sitting correctly, angled correctly and also check any lifting points for security
and correct operation.
10.5 Once lifting tackle check has been carried out the Slinger/Signaller will instruct the crane operator or
operators, to hoist the load to a height that allows the lifting tackle to take the full weight of the load
and again instruct the operator to stop hoisting when the load is just airborne to allow a final check of
the lifting tackle and lifting points and also check the structural integrity of the load.
10.6 Once the Slinger/Signaller is confident that the lifting tackle and the load are secure, any tag lines that
may be required will be attached to the load. Instructions will then be given to the crane operator or
operators to hoist the load clear of any obstructions, ensuring that any site specific risks are monitored
throughout the hoisting procedure.
10.7 Once the load is clear of all obstructions, the Slinger/signaller will give instructions to the crane
operator to manoeuvre the load as required for railing, or manoeuvre to the required landing area for
single crane lifts.
10.8 In the event that the landing area is at a different level or should access not permit, the Slinger/Signaller
will pass control of the crane signalling to a second strategically placed Slinger/Signaller at the landing
area.
10.9 The landing area Slinger/Signaller will then commence giving instructions to the crane operator or
operators to manoeuvre and lower the load to the required landing point, ensuring that any site specific
risks are monitored throughout the landing procedure.
10.10 The Slinger/Signaller will guide the load to the correct orientation as the load becomes contactable by
hand or by attached tag lines.
10.11 The Slinger/Signaller will instruct the crane operator to lower the load to just above the landing position
and then instruct the operator to stop lowering to allow the Site Manager to confirm position and
orientation of load prior to landing.
10.12 Once the position is confirmed by the Site Manager, the Slinger/Signaller will instruct the operator to
slowly lower load into position. Once landed, a final position check will be made before the
Slinger/Signaller instructs the operator to lower off all load weight.
10.13 Slinger/Signaller will instruct the operator to lower off, to allow lifting tackle to be released from the
load. In the event that any load is too large or high for safe access by ladder, powered access
equipment or a lifted man basket will be used to remove slings from loads.
10.14 Once lifting tackle is detached from the load, the Slinger/Signaller will instruct the operator to slowly
hoist the lifting tackle clear of the load and any site specific risks ensuring that no snagging occurs.
10.15 Once the lifting tackle is clear of all obstructions the Slinger/signaller will instruct the crane operator to
manoeuvre the crane ready for any further lifts that may be required and had over to another
Slinger/Signaller were required.
10.16 All other required lifts will be carried out as stated in sections 11.1 to 11.5. The Lift Supervisor will
ensure that all lifting and operational procedures are followed as per the Appointed Persons
recommendations and that any queries or deviation from this Method Statement are notified
immediately to the Site Manager and the Appointed Person.
11 DE-RIG PROCEDURE
11.1 Upon completion of the lifting operation, the Crane Supervisor will instruct the crane operator to load
any ancillary equipment or heavy lifting tackle onto relevant transport ready for removal from site.
11.2 The Crane Supervisor will then instruct the crane operator to lower all lifting tackle to the ground to
allow removal from hook.
11.3 The crane operator will then instigate the removal of any lifting tackle stored on the crane and then
commence the de-rig procedure.
11.4 All personnel assisting with de-rigging will be under the guidance of the crane operator at all times.
The de-rig procedure will be carried out as per crane manufacturers manual.
11.5 Once the crane has been de-rigged and all safety checks for road travel have been carried out the crane
operator will manoeuvre the crane/s off site, under the guidance of a member of the lifting crew. The
crane will then proceed on its way.
11.6 The remaining members of the lifting crew will ensure that any ancillary mats or equipment etc are
removed from site or placed in an appropriate position ready for collection prior to them leaving site.
11.7 Any traffic or pedestrian management arranged by the lift company will be unimplemented and
removed.
11.8 The Crane Supervisor will inform the Site Manager or site representative of the completion of the
operation and address any issues that may be raised and inform of any equipment left on site for later
collection.
12 ON SITE CHANGES/ADDITIONAL LIFTS
12.1 Any changes to this Method Statement & Lifting Plan must be notified to and approved by the
Appointed Person. Any crane position changes or amendments to drawings must also be notified and
approved by the Appointed Person.

13 RISK ASSESSMENT
The aim of this risk assessment is to highlight any possible hazards that are likely to occur during the lifting
operation.
Upon its completion with either a “High, Medium, Low or N/A” in the Risk Rating Box and either a “” or

  • 2. 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 It is the aim of this Method Statement to define and describe the equipment and safety procedures which are to be employed by the crane lifting company to carry out the lifting operation. The operation will be carried out in accordance with the following Legislation & Approved Codes of Practice. BS7121 Safe Use of Cranes (part 1) 2006 General & (part 3) 2000 Mobile Cranes Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998 Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 - Noise at Work Regulations 2006 Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007 - Working at Height Regulations 2007 1.2 THE LIFT The lift will be carried out in line with the guidance contained in BS7121. 1.3 SITE INSPECTION The Appointed Person shall carry out a detailed site inspection to ascertain the full requirements of the Site Manager and determine the required crane capacity and make an assessment as far as possible/practicable of any other site issues such as access, ground conditions, overhead obstructions, local authority interaction etc. 1.4 THE APPOINTED PERSON The Appointed Person who has prepared the Method Statement carries full responsibility for the safe completion of all works carried out during the operation. It is the responsibility of the Appointed Person to ensure that the Crane Supervisor is adequately briefed on the contents of this Method Statement. 1.5 THE CRANE SUPERVISOR Prior to the commencement of the works, the Crane Supervisor must ensure that all site personnel are adequately briefed on the contents of this Method Statement. This briefing shall take the form of a short ‘Toolbox Talk’. The Crane Supervisor must liaise with the Appointed Person should site circumstances require material change to the methods to be employed during the operation. 1.6 THE CRANE OPERATOR or OPERATORS All lifting operators or any operators working on behalf of the lifting company shall be fully trained and competent on the machines they operate and will have undergone full manufactures induction and training. 1.7 PERSONNEL All lifting personnel or any personnel working on behalf of the lifting company will be fully trained and hold the relevant certification for the role they undertake on the day of operation. Any non lift company personnel or personnel supplied by the client that will be involved in the lifting operation and taking on a specified role will be required to produce the relevant certification to the Appointed Person or Crane Supervisor prior to the commencement of the operation. Failure to produce the required certification will result in the suspension and possible cancellation of the lifting operation. 1.8 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT All lifting personnel will be supplied with standard PPE which consists of, Hard Hat, Safety Boots, Overalls, Gloves, Hi-Vis (and Safety Goggles if required). The Site Manager must inform all Personnel of any specific requirements in advance of the operation date. 1.9 CERTIFICATION Copies of statutory test certification and inspection reports will be available for inspection prior to the lifting operation taking place.
  • 3. 2 GENERAL CONDITIONS 2.1 The Site Manager will provide details of all items to be lifted, including weights, dimensions and any specific lifting tackle requirements. The Site Manager is responsible for the structural integrity of all loads to be lifted including any specified lifting points or slinging recommendations. 2.2 The Site Manager must ensure safe access to and egress from site for all lifting personnel and vehicles, and also ensure that the working area is clear of all obstructions to allow the safe assembly and working of the crane. The Site Manager will be responsible for supplying suitable floodlighting where necessary or when required. The Site Manager must carry out any enabling works required prior to crane arrival. 2.3 The Site Manager must ensure that the area where the crane is to stand/operate is firm and level and this it is capable of withstanding the expected loadings that will be imposed upon it. 2.4 The Site Manager must ensure that any Traffic Management (not supplied by the lift company) is in place prior to the positioning of the crane. 2.5 Any personnel not directly concerned with the lift must be kept out of the crane assembly and working area. The working area should be cordoned off with barrier tape, temporary fencing or otherwise secured, to prevent non lift associated personnel or the general public from entering the lifting area. 2.6 The Crane Supervisor shall make himself known to all relevant personnel on site, and conduct a ‘Toolbox Talk’ prior to commencing operations. The Site Manager should arrange for a site specific induction for the lifting personnel prior to the commencement of work. The Site Managers Site Risk Assessment, which identified any site hazards should be made available and brought to the attention of the lifting personnel. 2.7 All cranes to be left unattended for a period, shall be left in safe condition (jib retracted or laid down if possible), with not load on the crane hook. Cranes shall be shut down and isolated as per manufacturer’s instructions, secured and locked. Under no circumstances shall the crane be moved for lifting purposes if not under the instruction of the Crane Supervisor. 2.8 In the event that specified cranes or lifting tackle, cannot be supplied on the day of operation due to operational issues, breakdown or any unforeseen circumstances. The lift company has the discretion to supply cranes or equipment that is of a suitable alternative to that detailed in this Method Statement, (at no extra cost to the client). In the event of this situation arising, the Appointed Person and the Site Manager will be notified. The AP/Crane Supervisor will ensure that any changes do not infringe on the factors or safety within this method statement. 3 WEATHER CONDITIONS 3.1 In the event of extreme weather conditions the lift company may need to suspend the lifting operation until such time as it is safe to proceed. Although the safe workable wind speed varies from crane to crane, as a guide, the maximum wind speed at which lifting operations can take place is 10 metres per second, (22mph). In the event that man riding duties are required the maximum workable wind speed reduces to 7 metres per second, (16mph). Please note that local conditions and the safety of personnel may dictate the Crane Supervisor and Crane Operator have to suspend lifting operations at a lower wind speed than specified in this Method Statement. In addition, lifting operations must stop during storms or when there is a risk of lightning strikes. 4 GROUND CONDITIONS 4.1 The lift company will endeavour to advise the client regarding ground conditions, after a visual inspection (or where necessary/provided, perusal of a client ground survey report) and supply suitable plates, mats where required. The Client is required to advise the lifting company of any known underground services, voids or vaults as state in BS7121. Safe Use of Cranes.
  • 4. 5 OPERATION OUTLINE 5.1 LIFT CLASSIFICATION LIFT CLASSIFICATION Basic Lift Standard Lift Complex Lift Full Contract Lift Supervisor Only Contract Lift Note: If a “Supervisor Only Contract Lift” is the chosen option, it is imperative that any personnel supplied by the client, be fully trained, competent and experienced in lifting operations and hold current, valid and legislatively required certification, which must be available for our Appointed Person or Crane Supervisor to inspect prior to commencement of the lifting operation. Any personnel supplied by the Site Manager must work under the instruction of the Appointed Person or Crane Supervisor. Failure to comply with the above will results in the suspension of lifting until the aforementioned is adhered to. 5.2 PERSONNEL The following numbers of personnel for this lift are needed: Crane Operator Crane Supervisor Slinger/Signaller 5.3 COMMUNICATIONS Communications between the lifting crew and Crane Operator/s shall be maintained by means of Two-Way Radios Supplied by the Crane Company Two-Way Radios Supplied by Site Manager Hand Signals 5.4 WEATHER CONDITIONS Maximum Workable Wind Speed for the Crane is: Weather forecast to be obtained on morning of lift, confirming wind direction and strength. Wind speed forecast 15.6mph. Guide: 10 metres per second (22mph) for load lifting. 7 metres per second (16mph) for man riding duties. 5.5 BRIEF SCOPE OF WORK/NOTABLE FEATURES OF THIS LIFTING OPERATION
  • 5. 6 SITE DETAILS 6.1 ENABLING WORKS Any enabling works discussed and agreed to at the site inspection, should be carried out prior to arrival of the crane. Are any enabling works required 6.2 ACCESS & EGRESS The Site Manager shall ensure that the crane and all associated vehicles have safe and unimpeded access and egress to and from site. Description Dimensions Weight 7.2 LIFTING POINTS It is the Site Managers/Plant Managers responsibility to ensure that any manufactured Lifting Points are certified & tested for lifting purposes. This also applies to specified slinging methods where no lifting points are provided. Does the load have Manufactured Lifting Points or Manufacturer guidance for the method of lifting that has been approved for use by the Site Manager? If “No” to the above: Has the Appointed Person assessed and agreed a method of slinging with the Site Manager? Has the Centre of Gravity been taken into account for all proposed lifts? Have the lifting points and/or the lifting method been approved for use by the Appointed Person?
  • 7. 7.3 LIFTING TACKLE Please Note: In the event that the specified lifting tackle cannot be supplied on the day of operation due to operational changes, breakdown or any unforeseen circumstances. The crane company can supply and use lifting tackle/equipment that is of a suitable alternative to that detailed above. In the event of this situations arising, the Appointed Person and Site Manager should be notified. The AP/Crane Supervisor will ensure that any changes do not infringe on the factors of safety within this Method Statement. All Lifting Tackle certification to be available on site. The Crane Supervisor shall inspect all Lifting Tackle prior to each use. Any Lifting Tackle supplied by the Site Manager to be fit for purpose, fully certified and in good condition. Any damaged tackle shall be marked “Not For Use” and returned to the depot for disposal. Nylon Slings must be protected from sharp edges using sling guards or suitable packaging. 7.4 CALCULATED MAXIMUM LIFT WEIGHTS In the event of there being multiple lifts of different weights, only the details of the maximum required lift/s will be shown. CRANE & LIFT INFORMATION (Continued) 9 CRANE SET UP PROCEDURE THE CRANE TEAM Crane Supervisor: CITB CTA Card Expiry Date: Appointed Person: Slinger/Signaller(s): CITB CTA Card Expiry Date: Crane Driver: 9.1 The crane, together with the associated operating crew will arrive on site at the specified and agreed date and time. 9.2 Crane Supervisor will meet the Site Manager and carry out “Toolbox Talk” with all personnel involved in the lifting operation. Once this has been completed, all involved in the lifting operation must sign the register for this Method Statement. Any site inductions that are required will also be carried out. 9.3 Any traffic management, ancillary pans, mats or temporary roadways etc that are required to be positioned by hi-ab or other means, prior to the crane or cranes manoeuvring into position, will be done under the instruction of the Crane Supervisor. 9.4 The crane will then manoeuvre into position as shown on attached drawing. All manoeuvring to be carried out under the guidance of a member of the lifting crew. 9.5 The crane will then commence set-up procedure and rig to the configuration stated in section 8.1. All personnel assisting with rigging will be under the guidance of the crane operator, at all times. The set- up procedure will be carried out as per crane manufactures manual. 9.6 Upon completion of the rigging procedure, the crane operator will carry out procedural safety and computer checks, implementing any specific operational requirements, i.e. slewing restrictions, short rig configurations or fly jib configurations. 9.7 The Crane Supervisor will then carry out a radio communications check between the crane operator and the lifting crew. 9.8 Hook block of crane will then be lowered and required lifting tackle placed on the hook, Lift Supervisor will ensure that the correct lifting tackle has been selected. 9.9 The crane operator will then be instructed to hoist lifting tackle clear of any obstructions and position the crane ready for the first required lift. Any delivery/removal vehicles will now be positioned adjacent to the crane as per attached drawings, ready for work to commence. 10 LIFTING PROCEDURE 10.1 Slinger/Signallers will issue instructions via hand signals or two-way radios to the crane operator to position the crane over first required lift, Slinger/Signallers will plumb the boom head, directly over the load or set short to allow for jib deflection where necessary.
  • 12. 10.2 The Slinger/Signallers will instruct crane operator, the lower the hooks with lifting tackle to allow Slinger/Signaller to attach lifting tackle to load. LIFTING PROCEDURE (Continued) 10.3 All slinging will be carried out by fully trained, certificated and experienced slingers. Slinging methods adopted will be as specified by load manufacturers, using specified lifting points or, in the event that no manufacturer instruction or lifting points are provided, our Slingers will work to the Appointed Persons recommendations and to Health & Safety executives guidelines for safe slinging for lifting loads, (see section 7.2 & 7.3). The lifting tackle used, will be as stated in section 7.3 and will have current test certification available. 10.4 Upon completion of the attachment of the lifting tackle to the load, the Slinger/Signaller will instruct the operator by hand signals or radios, to hoist up to take the slack out of the lifting tackle. Once the lifting tackle has started to take the weight and has tightened the Slinger/Signaller will instruct operator or operators to stop hoisting. The Slinger/Signaller will then carry out a check around the load to ensure that the lifting tackle is sitting correctly, angled correctly and also check any lifting points for security and correct operation. 10.5 Once lifting tackle check has been carried out the Slinger/Signaller will instruct the crane operator or operators, to hoist the load to a height that allows the lifting tackle to take the full weight of the load and again instruct the operator to stop hoisting when the load is just airborne to allow a final check of the lifting tackle and lifting points and also check the structural integrity of the load. 10.6 Once the Slinger/Signaller is confident that the lifting tackle and the load are secure, any tag lines that may be required will be attached to the load. Instructions will then be given to the crane operator or operators to hoist the load clear of any obstructions, ensuring that any site specific risks are monitored throughout the hoisting procedure. 10.7 Once the load is clear of all obstructions, the Slinger/signaller will give instructions to the crane operator to manoeuvre the load as required for railing, or manoeuvre to the required landing area for single crane lifts. 10.8 In the event that the landing area is at a different level or should access not permit, the Slinger/Signaller will pass control of the crane signalling to a second strategically placed Slinger/Signaller at the landing area. 10.9 The landing area Slinger/Signaller will then commence giving instructions to the crane operator or operators to manoeuvre and lower the load to the required landing point, ensuring that any site specific risks are monitored throughout the landing procedure. 10.10 The Slinger/Signaller will guide the load to the correct orientation as the load becomes contactable by hand or by attached tag lines. 10.11 The Slinger/Signaller will instruct the crane operator to lower the load to just above the landing position and then instruct the operator to stop lowering to allow the Site Manager to confirm position and orientation of load prior to landing. 10.12 Once the position is confirmed by the Site Manager, the Slinger/Signaller will instruct the operator to slowly lower load into position. Once landed, a final position check will be made before the Slinger/Signaller instructs the operator to lower off all load weight. 10.13 Slinger/Signaller will instruct the operator to lower off, to allow lifting tackle to be released from the load. In the event that any load is too large or high for safe access by ladder, powered access equipment or a lifted man basket will be used to remove slings from loads. 10.14 Once lifting tackle is detached from the load, the Slinger/Signaller will instruct the operator to slowly hoist the lifting tackle clear of the load and any site specific risks ensuring that no snagging occurs.
  • 13. 10.15 Once the lifting tackle is clear of all obstructions the Slinger/signaller will instruct the crane operator to manoeuvre the crane ready for any further lifts that may be required and had over to another Slinger/Signaller were required. 10.16 All other required lifts will be carried out as stated in sections 11.1 to 11.5. The Lift Supervisor will ensure that all lifting and operational procedures are followed as per the Appointed Persons recommendations and that any queries or deviation from this Method Statement are notified immediately to the Site Manager and the Appointed Person. 11 DE-RIG PROCEDURE 11.1 Upon completion of the lifting operation, the Crane Supervisor will instruct the crane operator to load any ancillary equipment or heavy lifting tackle onto relevant transport ready for removal from site. 11.2 The Crane Supervisor will then instruct the crane operator to lower all lifting tackle to the ground to allow removal from hook. 11.3 The crane operator will then instigate the removal of any lifting tackle stored on the crane and then commence the de-rig procedure. 11.4 All personnel assisting with de-rigging will be under the guidance of the crane operator at all times. The de-rig procedure will be carried out as per crane manufacturers manual. 11.5 Once the crane has been de-rigged and all safety checks for road travel have been carried out the crane operator will manoeuvre the crane/s off site, under the guidance of a member of the lifting crew. The crane will then proceed on its way. 11.6 The remaining members of the lifting crew will ensure that any ancillary mats or equipment etc are removed from site or placed in an appropriate position ready for collection prior to them leaving site. 11.7 Any traffic or pedestrian management arranged by the lift company will be unimplemented and removed. 11.8 The Crane Supervisor will inform the Site Manager or site representative of the completion of the operation and address any issues that may be raised and inform of any equipment left on site for later collection. 12 ON SITE CHANGES/ADDITIONAL LIFTS 12.1 Any changes to this Method Statement & Lifting Plan must be notified to and approved by the Appointed Person. Any crane position changes or amendments to drawings must also be notified and approved by the Appointed Person. Amendment Details

Upon its completion with either a “High, Medium, Low or N/A” in the Risk Rating Box and either a “” or “N/A” in the Risk Managed box, the document coverts to a site specific assessment.
