DIGITAL AGE AND FUTURE OF
NURSING
Dr. Latha Venkatesan
Principal
Apollo College of
Nursing, Chennai.
Digital age
• India’s active mobile users reached 1,026.37 mn: TRAI
on February 21, 2019
• Indians are mostly using their phones to shop,
socialize.More Indians access the Internet on their
mobile phones than PCs
• Around 54 percent of the Indian internet user base was
between 20 and 39 years old in early 2019. People over
the age of 40 formed the lowest share, while youngsters
in the age group of 12 to 15 years made up a good 14
percent share of the total internet user base.
• India had over 720 million internet users that year,
ranking second in the world in terms of the number of
people with internet access
FUTURE OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
(Research Evidence)
• 98 percent of healthcare delivery systems plan to
have a mobile device policy by 2022.
• 77 percent of patients reported positive feelings
toward clinicians using mobile devices in their
care.
• 95 percent of patients are willing to share
electronic health metrics with clinicians.
• 97 percent of hospitals expect dynamic workflow
notifications to be sent to mobile devices by
2022. ( Cara Livernois,2018)
Digital age and Future of
Nursing
• Nursing Practice
• Nursing Education
• Nursing research
Digital OPD
• Check appointments
• Calendar feature allows to see appointments
• Details of previous OPD visits
• Integration with IPD records
• Previous lab results, Radiology findings, medication orders,
discharge summary can be accessed
• Risk scores calculated automatically based on assessment data
entered..eg. Cardiac risk
• Time trends of lab results, can set up favourite tests
• Copy and paste information from previous visits..saves time
• Interfaced investigation requests, Biiling
• Voice typing, Prescriptions digitally connected to pharmacy
• Reduces medication errors
• Alerts sent for follow up visits to patients
Digital IP Module
• Doctor Module (OPD & IPD) –Patient history, Daily
assessment,ordering tests, viewing test results,
Medication ordering, case summary, links between
doctors, no.of patients in wards/discharged etc..
• Emergency Module

Wireless Communication Systems
• Wireless badges or headsets integrate what were
once multiple communication methods — such as
phones and pagers — into one seamless
technology, reducing response times.
Six Ways Wireless Technology Is
Transforming Health Care
1. Managing Staff workflow
2. Tracking Medical Equipment
3. Automating Environmental Monitoring
4. Monitoring Hand hygiene Compliance
5. Analysing Operational Data
6. Increasing Security

Six Ways Wireless Technology Is
Transforming Health Care
IoT in Healthcare( Internet of Things)
IoT in Healthcare( Internet of Things)
• IoT is a combination of hardware and software
technology that produces trillions of data through
connecting multiple devices and sensors with the
cloud and making sense of data with intelligent
tools. (Eg)
• Closed-loop (automated) insulin delivery
• Connected inhalers
Real-Time Communication System
• This is a perfect example of how work gets done
more efficiently by integrating real time voice,
video and messaging into an application that
helps diagnose a patient within minutes,
Wireless Patient Monitoring
Point of Care Technology
Point of Care Technology
• Point-of-Care Technologies is a set
of technologies used at the location of patient
care helping improve healthcare outcomes.
• Blood glucose monitors, urine dipsticks,
pregnancy tests, rapid strep tests, rapid HIV
tests, hemoglobin level tests are
common examples of PoCT
Electronic Health Records
Electronic health records allow
nursing experts to document
care provided to patients, and
retrieve information that can
help prioritize care.
SMART TV
 TVs with smart technology can now provide
information on upcoming treatments and deliver
instructions for medication or post-discharge
care.
Automated IV Pumps
 It control the dosages and drips
given to patients.
 Software and medical tech allows
nurses to change the drip
amounts and medication doses so
patients aren’t waiting for
changes.
Portable Monitors
 Portable devices monitor vital
signs, ECG, respiratory rates,
and oxygen saturations while
transmitting the information
back to a central monitor.
 This means that nurses will
get an alarm notification if
there is any emergency.
Smart beds
 Smart bed technology gives
nurses a constant monitor in a
room that provides them with
regular updates and
communications on a patient’s
activities.
 Nurses also spend less time
coming in and adjusting
supplies and medical
equipment
Wearable devices
• .
Centralized Command Centers
• One of the newest ideas for hospitals is
centralized command centers.
• This is done through software applications such
as dashboards that provide real-time updates
for an organization.
Telehealth and Apps
Virtual ICU(vICU)
Patient and Staff Identification Systems
 Bar codes, wristbands and
radio frequency identification
(RFID), all work to track and
identify patients in an effort to
reduce errors while also
keeping the hospital
population safe.
Patient Monitoring System Reduces Fall
Rates
Hospitals are implementing
the AvaSys TeleSitter video-
observation system to
improve patient safety and
lower staffing costs.
Robotics
STETHEE ‘SMART’ Stethoscope
• The newly launched, FDA-
cleared Stethee Pro
features technology to
capture and analyze heart
and lung sounds and data
via Bluetooth, operating
around smartphone.
Artificial Intelligence
• Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation
of human intelligence in machines that are
programmed to think like humans and mimic
their actions.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN
NURSING EDUCATION
Transitions today…..
• Chalkboards have transitioned to

• Reading out of textbooks to reading

• These software programs handle all facets of the
e-learning process, including delivering content,
handling registration for courses, and tracking
and reporting.

THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY IN
NURSING
• In two years, 91 percent of Nurses
could access EMR.
• Medical and drug database references (92
percent).
• Lab diagnostic results (88 percent) using a
mobile device.
How will technology change nursing in
the future
• According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
Registered Nursing is one of the top
occupations for job growth through 2028,
expected to grow by 12% (much faster than
average).
• The BLS reports 371,500 new RN jobs will be
added by the year 2028
• Nurses will need to be more technologically
savvy.
• The field of health informatics will become
more mainstream.
The only constant feature in this world is CHANGE
While all change may not lead to progress, there can be no
progress without CHANGE
Take home message
CONCLUSION
 The technology involved in nursing today would
likely surprise even the most devoted gadget
freak.
 Nurses must increasingly master a host of
complex technologies, from "smart" medical
devices.
 Technology continues to revolutionize healthcare
and we have entered an exciting new frontier of
state-of-the-art gadgets and high-tech
communication systems.
