I’m in SF this week for customer meetings, fundraising, and the CITE 2012 Conference.
CITE 2012 is designed around understanding the impact consumer technology has on enterprises. Tablets,
smartphones, social media are all new innovations that global companies are struggling to manage and
incorporate in their operations.
Just as business users in the 80′s brought PC’s into the office so that they could be more productive using
Lotus spreadsheets, and later Mac’s so that they could do so with graphics and internet computing, current
enterprise execs are struggling with new technologies. In both previous cases, business users bringing
consumer technology into the workplace forced corporate IT to acknowledge, support, and ultimately

integrate those technologies in business operations.
In 2012, one of the biggest consumer driven innovations is social media. Over 1B+ people today
communicate with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other services. Invariably, many (if not most) of these
1B+ social networkers are customers, suppliers, or employees of global enterprises. Already this socially
connected population is leveraging these platforms for business use. As with previous waves, the
corporate IT department is going to have to acknowledge, support, and integrate this next new wave.
