This document discusses Wikimaps, a proposed project to compile historical maps from around the world on Wikimedia platforms. Wikimaps would work with archives to make high-resolution digital copies of maps openly licensed. Volunteers could then contextualize, georeference, and annotate maps, connecting them to Wikipedia. This would create an open database of historical geospatial data that could be used in new mapping applications and research. The document outlines how tools could be developed to help upload maps, add location data, collaboratively vectorize maps, and integrate maps with Wikidata.
