- 2. JIB CRANE INSTALLATION LOCATION: Cairo, IL DIFFICULTY: High CUSTOMER: Bungee TYPE: 2 Jib Cranes TASK: Install 2 Jib Cranes on the barge unloading pier on the Ohio River. TIMING: February 2008
- 3. Jib Crane Installation LEFT: Access to the pier was difficult. Here you see one of our work trucks backed out onto the pier. BELOW: 2 Workers are installing the new hoist while perched out over the edge of the river. The hoist is secured with a barge crane parked at the pier.
- 4. Jib Crane Installation LEFT: Here you see workers preparing to install the hoist as seen in the previous slide. All our workers are seen here wearing their personal protection equipment (PPE) which is our standard mode of operation. Although the difficulty level of the project was high – we are happy to say there were no accidents. After completing this project we maintained a long run of zero accidents and zero lost work days since the company inception.
- 5. Jib Crane Installation ABOVE: In this photo you can see the backbone of the jib ABOVE: In this photo you can see the backbone is now crane being raised by the barge crane. Workers stand ready on maneuvering into place while it leans percariously on the the pier waiting to accept it. This backbone weighs in at 6000 platform. Workers are securing it while moving rigging lbs and has to be installed underneath the overhang above positions. Once into place, the backbone will be welded solid the workers. This is an extreme maneuver requiring the crew to horizontal beams on the side of the structure. This to reposition the rigging multiple times while pulling the backbone is the pivot support for the jib arm which will be backbone closer each time into place. installed next.
- 6. Jib Crane Installation BELOW: In this photo you can see the horizontal arm rigged and being raised off the deck of the barge. This arm will be bolted to the backbone. This arm is approximately 40’ long and weighs in at 2800 lbs. ABOVE: In this closer photo you can see the difficulty of getting the backbone positioned into place. The platform above extends several feet beyond where the backbone needs to be mounted. Dual rigging cables, safety chains, chain hoists, and come-a-longs were used to do the final maneuvering.

Jib Crane Installation LEFT: After the backbone is solid welded to the horizontal beams at the top and bottom, the jib arm is maneuvered into place and the bolted to the pivot beam on the backbone. In this photo you can see the difficulty level of working on the platform itself. Workers in this photo tie off a ladder and work to insert the bolts.
- 8. Jib Crane Installation LEFT: A worker has just torched the old jib crane from the face of the pier. You can see it in the background being slung out onto the waiting crane barge. Once onto the barge, this crane will be taken down river where the crew will follow it and rig it, hoist it onto the bank, disassemble it, then load it on waiting semi trucks. This crane is going to northern Illinois to have a new backbone made for it. After repairs are made, the crew will re-install it onto the face of the pier.
- 9. Jib Crane Installation LEFT: As the sun sets, the crew struggles to load the jib cranes onto a waiting semi flatbed. In the background you can see the tug boat holding the barge against the bank while providing light for the crew.
- 10. Jib Crane Installation ABOVE: In the two photos above, you can see how high the river has gotten since the project started. All the flood gates were closed along the river except the one we were using to access the pier. Record snow fall and rain north of Cairo was causing major flooding all along the Ohio and Mississippi River basins. For this reason, extreme caution was taken to ensure no workers were at risk of falling into the river.
- 11. Jib Crane Installation LEFT: In this photo you can see a worker is busy welding the new backbone and mounting bracket to the face of the pier. He is standing on a temporary platform which had to be welded to the face of the pier. While he welds on the backbone, a barge has been moored along side the pier and the crane barge is moored beside it to give spacing for the crane to reach.
- 13. Jib Crane Installation In these photos you can see a maintenance work platform we constructed to allow access the the drive motor of the front jib crane. This work platform was perched out onto the top of the jib crane from the third story of the conveyor.
