• Around 1600, European explores sailed up the
Potomac river. Washington D.C. is named after
George Washington and Christpher Columbus.
Settlers later founded the Maryland colony. In
1791, the United States set aside land from
both Maryland and Virginia. They later built a
capitol city for the new country. It is now
where government workers from all the states
gather and make laws.

• In the summer the temperature is usually around
79 degrees F., and in the winter it’s usually about
35 degrees F.
• A few animals live in Washington, D.C. because so
many people live there, but the ones that do live
there are grey squirles, cottontail
rabbits, oppossums, and bald eagles.

• Washington, D.C. is important to the
Northeast because not only does it run the
Northeast but it runs the whole United States
of America.
