This presentation examines two communication theories and its relevance to modern social media. The first is social identity theory, developed by Henri Tajfel and John Turner, which asserts that group membership creates in-group/self-categorization and enhancement in ways that favor the in-group at the expense of the out-group. The second is knowledge gap theory first purposed by Philip Turner, George Donohue, and Clarice Olien. They believed that the increase of information in society is not evenly acquired by every member of society. People with higher socioeconomic status tend to have better ability to acquire information. Group members: Sandeep Gourkanti, Hongyue Guo, David Onoue & Alan Taylor Jr.

Following questions….are they fiction or reality about the effects of mass media? Mass Effects….Fiction or Reality? Media is only make believe…people know it is not real But… News is not make-believe (at least it’s not supposed to be) Most film and television dramas (Modern Family) are produced to seem real to viewers Much of contemporary television are “reality shows” Before they develop the capacity to know what is not real, children confront the world through television ~ what they see is real. We willingly suspend disbelief while consuming media in the name of entertainment. Mass Effects….Fiction or Reality? Media is only entertainment But… News is not play or entertainment (at least it’s not supposed to be). Even if media content is only play, play is very important to the way we develop our knowledge of ourselves and our world (think about what we learn from “playing sports”) Mass Effects….Fiction or Reality? Media is merely a mirror that is showing us the “norm” But…. If this is true then it is a very selective mirror. Some questions to think on: What does a “typical family” look like on TV? When there is a “bad person” on TV what do they look like? What race or ethnicity do “heros” tend to be? What sex? How are jobs represented on TV with regard to sex? Mass Effects….Fiction or Reality? Media merely reinforces existing values…family, church, school, etc. have more impact But…. The traditional socializing agents (school, religion, family) have lost much of their power to influence in our complicated and fast-paced world. Moreover, reinforcement is not the same as having no effects. If media can reinforce the good in our culture, media can just as easily reinforce the bad. Mass Effects….Fiction or Reality? Media doesn’t impact important issues, only minor ones like fads and fashion But…. Fads and fashions are not unimportant to us. Think about how much time and effort is spent on selecting clothes, cars, phones, electronics, etc. Media helped make fads and fashions so central to our self-definition and happiness. Why are billions of dollars spent on media efforts to sway opinion about social issues such as universal health care, nuclear power, and global warming. Are these not important issues? MASS COMMUNICATION THEORIES Given the importance of mass communication and its many forms, there are quite a few well-developed theories regarding the meaning-making relationship between mass media and their audiences. Cultivation Theory Developed by George Gerbner in the 1970s. Deals with television effects and argues that television has long-term effects Effects are gradual but significant an increased belief that the world is a cruel place Mean World Syndrome ...

SOURCE ----------> MESSAGE-------- > RECEIVER SOURCE > MESSAGE RECEIVER INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION YOU SPECIFIC INTERNAL DIALOGUE YOU INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION ONE OR A FEW PEOPLE FACE-TO- FACE, with or without technology ONE OR A FEW PEOPLE MASS COMMUNICATION Usually a GROUP/CORP But can also be an individual (influencer) LCD AS MANY AS POSSIBLE (MASSES) MASS COMMUNICATION: A CRITICAL APPROACH I love media studies! I feel this area of study can and will help you in myriad other endeavors and academic pursuits as media intersects with every other discipline. Media technology is an ubiquitous presence in our lives, it's everywhere all the time! To name just a few media sources: radio, television, film, newspapers, magazines, smartphones, computers, the Internet, computer and video games, gps, satellites, phones and other smart devices, etc. We must interrogate these systems on a deeper level to develop a critical lens. Attaining a deeper understanding of how these industries and tools work will allow us to engage, produce and consume more thoughtfully and intentionally. Now more than ever, due to the pandemic, we see how these tools-and an understanding of these tools- is necessary to keep in contact with friends and family, stay informed, work etc. Study after study claim that Americans consume a lot of media. According to STATISTA.com, (Daily media consumption in the U.S. 2020, by format, published by Amy Watson, Jun 17, 2020) "In terms of average time spent each day, TV is the second most used form of media in the United States, with adults spending 229 minutes (almost four hours) watching television on a daily basis according to a study undertaken in April 2020. Digital formats took up the majority of U.S. adults' daily media consumption time, while for newspapers and magazines the average time spent was just nine and eight minutes respectively. This article aims to demonstrate that the Lula government is faced with two major challenges in its effort to promote Brazil's economic and social development. The first challenge, of an economic nature, is represented by the obstacles that exist with the spending cap policy, despite the flexibility provided by the fiscal framework and the existence of an independent Central Bank, which make the Brazilian government unable to coordinate its fiscal and monetary policies, make public investments in the expansion of the economy and obtain macroeconomic stability and, the second challenge, of a political nature, is represented by the obstacles existing in the National Congress due to the fact that it does not have a majority in parliament, which prevents the federal government from putting its national developmental project into practice and fully meet social demands. For Brazil's progressive forces to re-elect President Lula in the 2026 presidential elections and obtain a parliamentary majority in the National Congress committed to political, economic and social advances, the Lula government will have to be successful on the economic front, promoting the expansion of the economy, increasing significantly generating jobs and income, keeping inflation under control and meeting the maximum social demands that benefit, above all, the country's underserved populations. Brazil's progressive forces need to commit, starting from the 2024 municipal elections, towards to elect the maximum number of mayors and councilors committed to Brazil's political, economic and social advances. These are the conditions to prevent, in 2026, right-wing extremists from regaining the Presidency of the Republic, expanding their participation in state governments and the National Congress and putting their nefarious anti-social and anti-national project into practice.
