JUST START! (3 min) Open your Student Notebook & turn to High Frequency/ Sight Words Section. High Frequency Words:  ,[object Object]

Are – Fish are on the dock!“Skywrite” these words with your finger while you spell them orally. Do three times for each word. Circle these new high frequency words in your notebook. Add the sentences in the High frequency/ Sight Words section.
OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, SWBAT: 1. memorize high frequency words 2. apply independently correct spelling of both phonetic & non-phonetic words 3. review word structure and practice decoding words with specific patterns …80% of the time.
Student Notebook Entry 1. Turn to Digraph page (Sounds Section) of your Student Notebooks 2. Draw the keyword picture for the digraphs: sh, ch, th, wh, ck Work quietly
Let’s review!! Digraphs: sh, ch, th, ck What is a digraph? Two letters with one sound Remember: most digraphs can come at the beginning or end of a word. Which digraph is only found at the beginning of words? wh Which digraph is only found at the end of words? ck
WORD: posh Let’s tap this word! Do you know what the word posh means? It means fancy. What does posh mean? (Fancy) - Let’s make other words  - Let’s tap this word… - I need a volunteer to underline the digraph…  rash rush whiz thick This single line reminds us that the two letters has only one sound. Even though thick has 5 letters it only has 3 sounds. Teacher Build Words close
NONSENSE WORDS WORD: lish Let’s tap it What is the digraph? Why is it a digraph? Remember: lish is not a word, we call it nonsense word. Nonsense words: Not a word Helps us apply the sounds and make longer words Helps us apply skills in reading
WORD: publish What other words can you think of with lishin it? Let’s read and tap these nonsense words: tex, fap, dez Why are they called nonsense words? Let’s see if you can make words from these nonsense words… Who wants to start? You’re a winner!!
SPELLING close Get you magnetic journal Find the letter of the sound I say What says /k/?  What says /w/? WORDS:  fish, sash, hush, path Let’s tap the word…(or call on a student) Who can tell me which the digraph is? Why is it a digraph? Spell it on your magnetic journal…
close Remember that we said earlier, ckis only used at the end of words right after the short vowel. Example: lack Let’s read it… Who wants to tap it? sock, tick, lock, neck, chuck REMEMBER: Notice that the c says /k/ but does not end one-syllable words K says /k/, but does not end words right after a short vowel. Even though both c and k says /k/, right after a short vowel in one syllable words, you should always use ck.

  • 6. Are – Fish are on the dock!“Skywrite” these words with your finger while you spell them orally. Do three times for each word. Circle these new high frequency words in your notebook. Add the sentences in the High frequency/ Sight Words section.

  • 9. Let’s review!! Digraphs: sh, ch, th, ck What is a digraph? Two letters with one sound Remember: most digraphs can come at the beginning or end of a word. Which digraph is only found at the beginning of words? wh Which digraph is only found at the end of words? ck
  • 10. WORD: posh Let’s tap this word! Do you know what the word posh means? It means fancy. What does posh mean? (Fancy) - Let’s make other words - Let’s tap this word… - I need a volunteer to underline the digraph… rash rush whiz thick This single line reminds us that the two letters has only one sound. Even though both c and k says /k/, right after a short vowel in one syllable words, you should always use ck.
