1. Prefácio Os Painéis e a Verdade Que iniciativa tão arrojada e que resultado tão feliz! Este livro prova bem que um Centro de Histocompatibilidade pode não ser apenas um lugar onde se pratica uma técnica de muita responsabilidade e rigor, ligada à transplantação de tecidos e órgãos. O do Norte, concebido apaixonadamente pelo seu primeiro Director, Armando Mendes, e agora entregue às mãos sensíveis de Helena Alves, quis sempre ser uma estrutura muito respeitada pela sua qualidade científico-técnica, claro está, mas aberta à humanização de todo o seu trabalho. Sentindo bem que, com a amostra de sangue para tipar, não eram apenas os linfócitos que entravam no Centro mas a pessoa de onde provinham e que, tantas vezes, estava no limiar silencioso e austero da morte. Em muitas patologias que ameaçam a vida as crianças estão presentes e o seu sofrimento toca-nos de forma mais aguda, tornando ainda mais difícil o diálogo necessário sobre o que se está a passar no organismo vivo ameaçado de morte. Sentindo bem esta dificuldade, Helena Alves e os seus colaboradores, no Centro, avançaram para uma iniciativa que posso resumir assim: vamos nós para o meio dos nossos jovens, nas Escolas, vamos dizer- lhes a verdade sobre o que parece ser um mistério; vamos dizer-lhes que o sangue pode estar doente e que, para o pôr bom, precisamos de ir buscar as células que nele circulam a outras pessoas, muitas vezes os seus irmãos, jovens como eles. E vamos pedir-lhes que, nas suas aulas de artes visuais, com a ajuda dos seus docentes, exprimam em linguagem estética, livremente. o que sentiram quando a verdade da doença e da recolha de medula óssea e da sua transplantação lhes foi transmitida como a única forma de afastar a ameaça sobre a vida, mesmo na flor da juventude. Podia não ter acontecido nada. E em muitos de nós, ouvindo falar desta iniciativa, perpassaria a convicção do fracasso. Eu, que aos oitenta anos ainda mantenho muita fé na utopia, não acreditaria se não visse. E o que vi deixou-me surpreso e, logo a seguir, 1. Preface The Panels and the Truth What an audacious initiative and what a happy result! This book testifies well that a Histocompatibility Centre may not only be a place where a rigorous technique of high responsibility, associated with organ and tissue transplantation, is carried out. The North Histocompatibility Centre passionately conceived by its first Director Armando Mendes and now in the sensible hands of Helena Alves, always wanted to be a highly respected centre for its scientific and technical quality, of course, but open to human touch in all its work. Feeling well that, with a blood sample to type, not only lymphocytes entered the Centre, but also the person from whom they came, who, so often, was on the silent and austere doorstep of death. In many life-threatening pathologies, children are present, and their suffering touches us sharply, making yet more difficult the necessary dialogue regarding what is happening in the living body, threatened by death. Aware of this difficulty, Helena Alves and her collaborators in the Centre, moved towards an initiative that I can summarize as follows: we are going to the schools, among our young people; we are going to tell them the Truth about what appears to be a mystery; we are going to tell them that blood may be sick and to make it better, we need to get cells which circulate in others, often brothers and sisters, young like them. Then, we are going to ask them to freely express, in an aesthetic language in their art classes with the help of their teachers, what they felt when the truth about the disease and the collection of bone marrow and its graft was explained to them, as being the only way to push away this threat to life, even at youth-fullness. Nothing may have happened. And for many of us, hearing about this initiative, would pass by the conviction that it would doomed to failure. I myself, who at eighty years old, still maintain a lot of faith in utopia, would not have believed it if I had not seen it. And what I saw left me surprised and then moved.
comovido. Dei comigo a pensar assim: Como aconteceu que uma mensagem técnica, passando pelo espírito destas crianças, algumas muito novas, se tenha transformado em objectos estéticos? Como foi possível que estas crianças, ouvindo e vendo que a medula é fábrica de vida mas pode ser também lugar de morte, deram um sentido a esta informação e com ela fizeram estes Painéis? Não vou agora, aqui, dissertar sobre o mistério da criação estética e a génese da obra de arte. Mas tenho de encontrar uma explicação. E a que ofereço, com toda a humildade, aos futuros leitores deste livro, que vão olhar as reproduções com espírito crítico, é esta. Os profissionais do Centro tiveram a coragem de dizer a estas crianças, a verdade e nada mais que a verdade. As questões de vida e de morte só se resolvem bem num universo de seriedade e verdade. Os jovens, ao pintarem estes painéis, estavam a transmitir-nos a verdade que receberam, a forma como a integraram nas suas consciências emocionais e o modo como julgam que a verdade pode e deve ser transmitida aos outros. Cada um ao seu estilo, certamente. Mais naif ou mais elaborado. Mais cromático ou mais desenhado. Mas em todos pressenti a verdade intrínseca do ser e não o fingimento do falso artista ou do amador jeitoso. Saí, como disse, comovido. E trouxe comigo o olhar estranho, misterioso, não sei se triste se confiante, quase só esboçado, numa jovem de crânio desnudado pela quimioterapia. Há verdade neste olhar, porque a “alma humana é um abismo”. I found myself wondering: How was it possible, that a technical message passing through the minds of these children, some of them very young, had been transformed into aesthetic objects? How was it possible that these children, by hearing and seeing that bone marrow is a factory of life, but that may also be a place of death, gave a meaning to this information, and with it made these Panels? I am not going now, here, to make a dissertation on the mystery of aesthetic creation and the genesis of the work of art. But, I must find an explanation. And the one that I offer, with all humility, to future readers of this book, who will look at these reproductions with a critical mind, is this: The professionals of the Histocompatibility Centre had the courage to tell the children the truth and nothing but the truth. Questions of life and death are only solved in a seriousness and truthful universe. Young people, by painting these panels were transmitting to us the truth they received, the way it was integrated into their emotional consciousness and the way in which they judge truth may and should be transmitted to others. Each one in its own style certainly. Some more naïve and some more elaborate. Some more chromatic and some more detailed. But in all of them I felt the intrinsic truth of being and not the pretence of the false artist or the clever amateur. I left, as I said, moved. And I brought away with me the mysterious and strange look, unsure if sad or trusting, almost only sketched, of a young girl with the skull denuded by chemotherapy. There is Truth in this look, because “the human soul is an abysm”. 2. Nota introductória “Eu sou o Francisco! Recebi medula da Mariana, que me salvou a vida”. Quem pode ficar indiferente à marcante experiência destes dois pequenos irmãos! E que melhor exemplo para iniciar esta viagem, proporcionada pela imaginação e criatividade de crianças e jovens do primário ao secundário, de todos os pontos do País, Continente e Ilhas. Para tanto bastou a imaginação e o enorme dinamismo da Dr.ª Helena Alves, Directora do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte – CHN, de pôr as crianças a debater o tema da Leucemia e a importância da Medula Óssea. Com alguns jovens colaboradores, desenvolveu um CD-ROM, em linguagem muito acessível, que intitulou de “Medula: a fábrica da vida”, e no âmbito da Educação para a Saúde, lançou o desafio aos jovens alunos de todo o País, convidando-os ainda a expressarem artisticamente as suas ideias, a serem avaliadas por júri a nomear. Para esse objectivo foi criado o respectivo regulamento. Não tenho dúvidas em como milhares de crianças assim estimuladas, muito evoluiram na sua curiosidade para esta área, e o mesmo se poderá afirmar relativamente à área das artes, tão bem reflectido nos painéis de azulejos concretizados, onde a alegria de pintar o tema, a par da criatividade, ressalta com uma força impressionante! É uma excelente iniciativa que, por si só e pela extraordinária resposta, a todos obriga reflectir. E em quantas outras áreas e formas não será possível fazer brotar essa “alegria” das crianças, incutindo-lhes desde logo também o estímulo para o desenvolvimento da sua auto-estima e confiança? A Criança é futuro, e como fonte singular de energia que representa, merece todo um investimento de educação a potenciar mais e mais. “Este CD-ROM foi desenvolvido com o intuito de estimular a curiosidade natural dos mais pequenos pelas Ciências da Vida e, em particular, pela Leucemia e pela importância da doação de medula óssea.” 2. Introduction “I am Francisco and I received bone marrow from Mariana which saved my life” Who can remain untouched by the emotional experience of this brother and sister? And what better example to begin this journey provided by these kids imagination and creativity from all over the country? This work was possible due to the vision and great energy of Dr. Helena Alves, Director of Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, who encourage the children to debate the theme of leukaemia and the importance of bone marrow. With some young collaborators, an interactive CD ROM was developed in easy language, titled “Bone marrow: The factory of life” and in the field of health education, young students from all over the country were challenged to express their ideas through art, to be judged by a jury. For this purpose, regulations were established. “This CD ROM was developed with the intention of stimulating the natural curiosity of the little ones for life science, in particular for leukaemia and the importance of Bone Marrow donation.” I am sure that thousands of children stimulated in this way got new ideas in the fields of Science and Art, reflected in the tile panels presented, where the joy of illustrating the theme together with the creativity, bursts with energy. This is an excellent initiative which in itself and by the extraordinary response makes us all think. In how many other areas and ways would it be possible to make this happiness blossom in children also encouraging them from the outset to develop self-esteem and confidence? The children are the future and a unique, special source of energy. They deserve all the investment in education to achieve their full potential.
Não resisto a referir o exemplo Venezuelano, “El Sistema”, programa de enorme sucesso, de ocupação e reabilitação de jovens em risco, que tem como objectivo ultrapassar a pobreza física com a riqueza espiritual através da música, tirando partido da criatividade, imaginação e capacidade de aprendizagem. Todos os dias depois das aulas, mais de 300.000 crianças dos bairros pobres, a partir dos dois anos (iniciação aos ritmos) e dos quatro (iniciação instrumental), participam neste programa. O seu mentor, muitas vezes apelidado de louco, foi suficientemente visionário para fazer esta aposta nessa tremenda “fonte de energia” que são as crianças. Resultado: mais de 300 orquestras jovens grassam por toda a Venezuela; a Orquestra Juvenil Nacional realiza espectáculos por todo o Mundo, sempre com lotação esgotada e o seu jovem maestro, Gustavo Dudamel, de 26 anos, super estrela internacional, considerado como um dos melhores da actualidade é o seu expoente máximo! Dá gosto observar a sua alegria de tocar música! Também com este projecto se pretendeu criar os “músicos do futuro”, os obreiros da luta contra a Leucemia, os construtores das alegrias dos doentes e famílias atormentadas pela doença! Com este livro, as exposições itinerantes e posterior incorporação dos painéis nas paredes do novo edifício de expansão do CHN, mais do que divulgar estes trabalhos excelentes sobre a problemática da Leucemia e o Transplante de Medula, pretende dar- se mais um contributo para estimular a reflexão sobre as “alegrias” por explorar nas nossas crianças. Desde o meu primeiro contacto com o Projecto que fiquei muito sensibilizado, e aceitei de imediato, com entusiasmo, o convite para colaborar na sua organização e gestão. Foi um trabalho gratificante e sinto-me honrado por nele ter participado. Obrigado Dr.ª Helena Alves por em tão boa hora me ter lançado o desafio. I cannot refrain from referring to the Venezualian example “El Sistema”, an enormously successful program for the occupation and rehabilitation of young people at risk, which has as its aim to overcome poverty by means of spiritual wellbeing through music, using creativity, imagination and learning. Every day after classes more than 300.000 children from poor neighbourhoods from the age of 2 (introduction to rhythm) and 4 (introduction to instruments) participate in this program. The person behind the program, often called crazy, was sufficient visionary to gamble on this tremendous source of energy which children represent. Result: more than 300 youth orchestras were developed across Venezuela; the National Youth Orchestra produces shows all over the world always sold out and the young conductor Gustavo Dudamel, 26 year old, an international superstar currently considered one of the best, is a major attraction. It is delightful to see their joy in playing music. With this Project we also intend to create “the future musicians”, workers in the fight against leukaemia, builders of happiness for patients and their families tortured by this disease. With this book, itinerant exhibitions and incorporation of the panels in the walls of the new building of CHN extension, besides publicising this excellent work about the problem of leukaemia and bone marrow transplantation, we intend to stimulate reflection about “the cheers” yet to be explored in our children. From my first contact with the Project I was touched and immediately accepted with enthusiasm the invitation to participate in its organization and management. It was satisfying work in which I feel honoured to have participated. Thank you Dr.ª Helena Alves for, in such a good hour, having set me this challenge. Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte “Medula Óssea: A Fábrica da Vida” Painéis de azulejos O Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte é parte da Lusotransplante, designação adoptada pelos 3 Centros de Histocompatibilidade em Portugal (o do Norte no Porto, o do Centro em Coimbra e o do Sul em Lisboa), criados em 1983 como organizações públicas de saúde com autonomia, sendo os três primeiros directores destas instituições o Dr. Armando Mendes no Porto, a Dra Henrique Breda em Coimbra e o Professor Machado Caetano em Lisboa, todos já aposentados. O Registo Nacional de Dadores de Medula Óssea CEDACE, sem instalações nem quadro de pessoal, está integrado nos três Centros, cujos edifícios e colaboradores são o lar e os braços que alimentam o Registo. A grande actividade dos 3 centros para criar o Registo Nacional de Dadores de Medula Óssea não relacionados começou em Junho de 2003 depois da decisão do governo de apoiar financeiramente a actividade do Registo. Como forças importantes neste combate, salientam-se as famílias, a Associação Portuguesa Contra a Leucemia (APCL) que foi um excelente aliado para obter apoio politico e financeiro para o Registo, a Associação Portuguesa de Leucemias e Linfomas (APLL) e a Comunicação Social. Forças de toda a sociedade civil, empresas, grupos religiosos, associações desportivas, políticos, jovens e adultos, mobilizaram a sociedade portuguesa para registar dadores voluntários de medula óssea. Parlamento e governo, construtores de opinião, deputados e o Primeiro-Ministro registaram-se e têm apoiado as actividades dos Centros de Histocompatibilidade. Até agora, o registo de dadores de medula óssea não relacionados continua a ser uma matéria de grande interesse para os media, que têm sido uma ajuda inestimável. Portugal atingiu em 3 anos o terceiro lugar no ranking europeu de dadores de medula óssea não relacionados por milhão de habitantes, com esta exemplar união de esforços. 3. North Histocompatibility Center “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life” Glazed Tile Panels The North Histocompatibility Centre is part of the Lusotransplante, name adopted by 3 Histocompatibility Centres in Portugal (North-Porto, Center-Coimbra and South-Lisboa), created in 1983 as autonomous public health organizations, being the 3 first Directors, Armando Mendes in Porto, Henriqueta Breda in Coimbra and Machado Caetano in Lisbon, all of them retired. The National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors CEDACE, is within the 3 Centres, whose buildings and staff are the homes and arms that feed the registry. The strong activity of the 3 Centres to create the National Registry of Unrelated Bone Marrow Donors started in June 2003 after decision of financial support of the activity by the government. As very important forces in this fight, stand out the families, the Portuguese Association Against Leukaemia (APCL) that has been an excellent ally getting political and financial support to the activity of registering bone marrow unrelated donors, the Portuguese Association for Leukaemia and Lymphoma (APLL) and the Media. Forces from all community, enterprises, religious groups, sports associations, politics, youth and adults, mobilized the Portuguese society to register as Bone Marrow donors. Parliament and government, opinion makers, deputies and the Prime Minister registered and are supporting the activities of the Histocompatibility Centres. Until now, the register of unrelated donors is still a matter of great interest of media which have been of inestimable help. Portugal reached the third place in 3 years in the European ranking of Unrelated Bone Marrow Donors per million of inhabitants with this
O CD “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida”, que concebi e editei em 2005, pretendeu preparar o futuro e fazer das crianças de hoje os dadores de amanhã. Verão a doação de medula como uma participação normal da população saudável para tentar melhorar a saúde dos doentes com leucemia espalhados pelo mundo. A actual dependência dos media para publicitar a doação será substituída pela crença que a solidariedade é um dever pessoal e não pode ser substituída por nada no mundo. O CD intitulado “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida”, foi criado para ensinar os conceitos básicos sobre medula e os constituintes do sangue, leucemia, o tratamento da leucemia, transplante de medula óssea, Histocompatibilidade, biologia das células do sangue, cromossomas, DNA, a herança dos haplótipos, a recolha de medula e como se tornar um dador voluntário de medula óssea. O CD, dividido em sete partes, usa várias técnicas de áudio visual, desde construção gráfica a filme. Dirigido a várias idades, tem a “ ”, uma criança afectada por Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda, um trabalho gráfico; “ ”, um texto com figuras acerca da leucemia, o seu tratamento e o transplante de medula óssea; “ ”, uma apresentação em PowerPoint preparada por um grupo de jovens (16 anos) num curto curso de verão oferecido pelo CHN a jovens interessados em ciência; “ ”, um filme mostrando imagens reais do trabalho de laboratório com comentários da directora Helena Alves sobre a organização e história da Histocompatibilidade Portuguesa, actividades do Centro, Leucemia e Transplantação; “ ” e “ ”, jogos engraçados dirigidos aos mais novos, para testar a aprendizagem dos conceitos básicos da ciência ensinados no CD; “ ”, informações para pais e professores sobre o CD; “ ”, informação sobre sites internacionais no campo da Leucemia, Transplante de Medula Óssea, Dadores de Medula Óssea e Registos de Dadores. The CD “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, that I conceived and edited in 2005 intended to prepare the future, making today's children the donors of the near future. They will see bone marrow donation as a normal participation of healthy population in order to provide better health to leukaemia patients around the world. The actual dependence from the media to publicise bone marrow donation will be replaced by believing that solidarity is a personal duty and can not be substituted by anything in the world. The CD entitled “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida”, that means “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, has been created to teach basic concepts about Bone Marrow and blood constitution, Leukaemia, Leukaemia treatment, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Histocompatibility, biology of blood cells, chromosomes, DNA, haplotypes inheritance, bone marrow collection and how to become a Bone Marrow Donor. The CD, divided in 7 parts, uses several audio visual techniques, from graphic construction to a film. Directed to several age groups, it has ” ”, a kid affected by Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a graphic technique work; “ ”, a text with figures about Leukaemia, it's treatment and Bone Marrow Transplantation; “ ”, a PowerPoint presentation prepared by a group of teenagers (16 years old) in a short summer course offered by the North Histocompatibility Centre to young people interested in science; “ ”, a film showing real images from the laboratory work with comments from the Director Helena Alves about the Portuguese Histocompatibility organization and history, Centre activities, Leukaemia and Transplantation; “ ” and “ ”, funny games directed to younger people, to test knowledge of basic science concepts taught in the CD; “ ”, information to parents and teachers about the CD; “ ”, information about international sites in the field of Leukaemia, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Bone Marrow Donors and Registries. no estilo de vida e pode ajudar a reduzir o custo com diagnóstico e tratamentos no futuro. Enfrentando a doença, doentes e seus familiares estão altamente motivados para participar na procura de soluções. Esta motivação continua a ser uma ferramenta não explorada para atingir melhor saúde. A transplantação, como recurso poderoso para tratar doentes com diferentes doenças, é um campo da medicina interessante para doentes, dadores, políticos e media. Inovação na educação para a saúde pode ser uma boa experiência para aplicar, quer a doentes quer a dadores. O CD interactivo “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida” teve grande sucesso em grupos de crianças, jovens e adultos, doentes e dadores, professores e pais. A multiplicação dos 35000 CDs foi custeada pelo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, o registo nacional de dadores CEDACE e o grupo SONAE. O CD foi distinguido com o Prémio Hospital do Futuro – Educação 2006- 2007 como o mais inovador trabalho de EDUCAÇÃO PARA A SAÚDE nos últimos 2 anos. A iniciativa de distribuir o CD pelas escolas de todo o País foi o primeiro passo. Nos últimos 2 anos propus às escolas a discussão do assunto nas aulas de Ciências e a pintura de painéis de azulejos nas aulas de educação visual e tecnológica expressando o seu sentimento sobre o tema. O objectivo era mobilizar os jovens para fazerem pinturas e um concurso entre escolas com painéis de azulejos pintados à mão. Esses painéis serão integrados nas paredes do actual e do já projectado, novo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte. A participação desses jovens simboliza a construção conjunta de soluções futuras para doentes com Leucemia, a solidariedade e a partilha de responsabilidades para ajudar pacientes. Melhor que cimento, pessoas são o material que precisamos para construir o futuro, o novo “edifício” do Centro de Histocompatibilidade e do Registo Nacional. Elas serão a parte mais importante da construção, com elas, por elas. In the most recent years, “Education for health” became an increasingly interesting way of teaching concepts about how to actively adopt attitudes for a better health. Increasing communication between health professionals and society helps to promote new lifestyles and can help reduce costs with diagnosis and treatment in the future. Face to disease, patients and their relatives are highly motivated to participate looking for solutions. This motivation is still an unexplored tool to achieve better Health. Transplantation, as a powerful resource to treat patients with different diseases, is an interesting field of Medicine to patients, donors, politicians and media. Innovation in Education for Health can be a good experience to apply either in patients or in donors. The Interactive CD “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, had an excellent success in groups of children, youth and adults, patients and donors, teachers and parents. The production of 35000 CDs was funded by the North Histocompatibility Centre, the National Registry CEDACE and SONAE group. The CD was distinguished by the Portuguese Prize Hospital of the Future - Education 2006-2007 as the most innovative work of EDUCATION FOR HEALTH over the last 2 years. The first step of this initiative was the distribution of this CD to all schools in the country. In the last 2 years I proposed to schools to discuss the theme in Science classes and to paint tile panels in visual and technologic education classes, expressing student's feelings about the subject. The aim was to mobilize young people to make paintings and school contests with hand painted glazed tile panels (like the Portuguese traditional “azulejo”). Those panels will be part of the walls of the present building and the projected new building of the North Histocompatibility Centre.
A excelente adesão dos professores e alunos ao projecto resultou já em 101 painéis de azulejos e 129 projectos de painéis mandados por escolas de todo o país. Os painéis têm dimensões até 90cm x 150 cm e foram usadas diversas técnicas. As pinturas são maravilhosas e exalam pureza e ternura. Algumas expressam o doloroso conhecimento e íntima proximidade com os doentes leucémicos, colegas atingidos pela doença. Partilhar os medos, discutir soluções e criar objectos de arte ajuda as crianças a compreender a Verdade da Vida. , mas é sobretudo um e a forma como vamos nesse depende de cada um de nós. As crianças podem aprender que a forma como elas atravessam a Vida depende delas. Com outros seres humanos, ajudando e sendo ajudado, elas podem atravessar a Vida dando um pouco delas próprias e produzindo efeitos fantásticos nos seus semelhantes. é que , para o Bem e para o Mal, para a Saúde e para a Doença. A Verdade é que muitas pessoas sofrendo de leucemia no mundo precisam de ajuda e as pessoas saudáveis podem salvá-las registando-se como dadores de medula Óssea e dando as Unidades de Sangue do Cordão Umbilical ao nascer, para os Bancos Públicos de Sangue do Cordão Umbilical. A Verdade é que nós precisamos fazer isso agora e preparar a nossa juventude para esta Verdade. A Vida é Começo e Fim Caminho Caminho A Verdade da Vida nós podemos mudá-la The participation of young people symbolizes the joint construction for future solutions to leukaemia patients, the solidarity and sharing of responsibility to help patients. Better than concrete, people are the material we need to construct the future, the new “building” of the Histocompatibility Centre and the National Registry. They will be the most important part of that construction, with them for them. O belo trabalho desenvolvido por estes estudantes e professores é a prova de que podemos mobilizar pessoas saudáveis para colaborar com os profissionais e governos para auxiliar os doentes. Os painéis iniciarão uma exposição itinerante de 5 - 28 de Janeiro no Porto (na Casa do Médico da Secção Regional do Norte da Ordem dos Médicos) e continuará em outras cidades. É importante que a mensagem de compromisso e solidariedade destas crianças seja conhecida e seguida. Foi para mim um privilégio e uma honra ter recebido estes painéis e uma experiência única e gratificante que nunca esquecerei. Foi-o também para todos os colaboradores do CHN. O primeiro painel é de uma turma de crianças de 6-8 anos onde está uma criança transplantada. O Painel diz: “ .” Mariana é a sua pequenina irmã... Este painel abrirá o livro. O livro será distribuído em Congressos de Transplantação, firmas, escolas, e será feito um CD também para distribuir nas exposições com pinturas de todos os painéis e projectos recebidos. Como eu não podia prever o impacto do desafio que lancei às escolas, as decisões acerca das exposições e este livro, foram tomadas recentemente. A responsabilidade de divulgar a mensagem de solidariedade destas crianças forçou-me a envolver mais e mais pessoas para a organização da exposição e do livro, assim como para a preparação do CD. Assim, pedi a muitas pessoas, amigos, familiares, colegas, colaboradores do Centro e patrocinadores para me ajudarem a preparar estes eventos. O curto tempo (menos de 6 meses) para preparar tudo, tornou possível a sua realização apenas porque tive um inestimável apoio para prosseguir de muitas pessoas maravilhosas dentro e fora de Portugal. The Truth is that many people suffering from leukaemia in the world need help and healthy people can save them registering as Bone Marrow Donors and giving Umbilical Cord Blood at birth, to Public Cord Blood Banks. The Truth is that we need to do it now and prepare our youth to this Truth. The nice work of these students and teachers is the proof that we can mobilize healthy people to cooperate with health professionals and governments to help patients. The panels will start an itinerant exhibition from 5 - 28 January in Porto (in the North region House of the National Medical Association- Ordem dos Médicos) and will go on to several cities. It is important that the message of commitment and solidarity of these children be known and followed. Àqueles que não quiseram participar no apoio ou no patrocínio a este trabalho, ou que nem sequer me responderam, uma palavra de Sejam mais e mais confiantes no trabalho das instituições públicas e privadas Portuguesas, nos seus profissionais e sobretudo nas crianças Portuguesas. 4. Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto A FMUP iniciou há uma década uma atitude de abertura à comunidade onde está inserida e serve com muitas vertentes. Recebemos alunos do ensino secundário, participamos em iniciativas com outras instituições e sobretudo esforçamo-nos por ter uma presença assídua e de forte afirmação activa na comunicação social através do nosso próprio Gabinete de Relações Públicas. Pretendemos assim servir a comunidade, mas também dar-lhe a certeza de que o seu investimento produz efeitos, ao mesmo tempo que pretendemos obter a sua aprovação para o rumo que imprimimos às nossas actividades. Esta estratégia de abertura produziu efeitos que estão à vista. Os jovens da região procuram-nos para estudar Medicina. Procuram-nos em massa, muito além da nossa capacidade de os receber demonstrando a opinião que eles próprios e as suas famílias têm sobre a FMUP. Os serviços públicos, têm funções sociais definidos do exterior e vivem à custa dos impostos dos contribuintes. O seu funcionamento serve para lhes proporcionar serviços e tem de ser transparentes. No caso do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, os bons serviços à comunidade requerem elevada competência técnica com sólida vertente científica e resposta rápida às necessidades das estruturas envolventes. Esta iniciativa “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida” pretende chegar muito mais longe. Pretende ir até ao mundo dos afectos e dentro deste ao grupo onde os efeitos são mais profundos, as crianças. As belíssimas imagens que se recolheram reflectem uma imagem do serviço muito bem cumprida. Ao folheá- las vemos representações de carácter técnico, aproximando-se de imagens de histológicas. e outras de simbologia livre, a exprimir muito mais a envolvente afectiva das crianças: Vemos a medula e, por extensão, o Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte através dos olhos das crianças numa ideia de ligação à comunidade muito bem cumprida. Faculty of Medicine of Oporto University A decade ago FMUP started to practise an attitude of openess towards the community within which it operates and helps in several ways. We receive students from secondary schools, we participate in other institutions' initiatives, but above all, we make an effort to maintain a constant and strongly active presence in the media, through our Public Relations office. We hope, in this way, to serve the community, but also to assure them that their investment produces results and, at the same time, obtain their approval for the direction our activities have taken. This strategy of openess has produced visible effects. The younger generation comes to us in order to study medicine. However, there is such a large number, much greater than our capacity to receive them. This demonstrates the opinions which both they and their families have of FMUP. Public services have social functions which are defined from outside and are supported by tax payers money. Their purpose is to perform services which must be transparent. In the case of CHN, their good services to the community require high technical skills, with a solid scientific base and quick response to the needs of the institutions concerned..This initiative “ Bone Marrow: factory of life” intends to reach even further. It intends to reach the world of sentiment and within this world, to where the effects are felt the deepest, children. The wonderful pictures which were collected reflect a good image of the service. Going through them we see representations of technical characteristics similar to hystologic images and others, of free symbology, which express much more of the children's affectionate side. Administração Regional de Saúde do Norte O Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte ao promover a divulgação do tema: “ Medula: A Fábrica da Vida” nas escolas, através da visualização do CD, envolvendo professores, alunos e pais, tomou uma decisão correcta e pertinente. Uma atitude correcta, porque ao divulgar conhecimentos científicos à comunidade, através das crianças, está difundindo saber, a aumentar as competências das crianças e dos seus familiares quanto a doenças e tratamento das mesmas, em que o empenho de todos é essencial para proporcionar saúde aos doentes com leucemia. Quando percebemos que com pequenos e simples gestos podemos contribuir para a saúde de alguém, mais facilmente somos solidários, mais facilmente damos algo de nós. A estratégia é pertinente, porque ao estimular a criatividade e o contributo das crianças, está a mobilizar a comunidade do modo mais eficaz e efectivo. Está a envolver as futuras gerações, está fomentando valores de solidariedade de cidadania, que, ainda por cima, são os melhores veículos de mensagens para as gerações anteriores e a dos respectivos pais. Parabéns a quem teve a ideia de pedir às crianças que elaborassem azulejos sobre o tema, e aos professores e pais que apoiaram os alunos/filhos na execução de tal tarefa. Estes painéis de azulejos (arte tão portuguesa) irão perdurar no tempo a criatividade, a arte, o afecto a ternura, o empenho de tantas crianças, e vão decididamente contribuir para veicular a mensagem a “ Medula: a fábrica da vida” para outras crianças e milhares de adultos, de um modo muito bonito e efectivo. North Region Health Administration In promoting this theme “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life” in schools through the viewing of an interactive CD, involving teachers, students and parents, the Centro de Histocompatibili- dade do Norte (CHN) took a right and pertinent decision. A correct attitude, as in promoting scientific knowledge to the community, by means of the children, it is spreading knowledge, increasing the competence of children and their relatives regarding illness and their treatment, in which the work of all is essential in order to provide health for patients with leukaemia. When we understand that by small, simple gestures we can contribute to the health of someone, solidarity becomes easier, and more easily we give something of ourselves. The strategy is pertinent because, in stimulating the creativity and contribution of children, is mobilizing the community in a more efficient and effective way. It is involving future generations, promoting values of community and solidarity, which, above all are the best way for passing in the message to previous generations and their parents. SONAE A Magia das Cores A partir do CD “Medula: a Fábrica da Vida”, onde se desmistificam e ensinam os porquês da doença do pequeno João com leucemia, o Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte e particularmente a Dra. Helena Alves conseguiu dar alma a este projecto, que revela por parte de tantas crianças uma criatividade, que nem grandes pintores retratariam tão bem. Quem conhece ou passa pela experiência de uma doença oncológica, reconhece no trabalho do CHN uma dedicação que ultrapassa o profissionalismo e o científico. Esta dádiva constante aos outros, esta luta diária do saber e dar a conhecer de forma tão empenhada e desinteressada, reconforta e redobra a esperança de quem a procura. Este projecto é assim o testemunho vivo de todos os que se dedicam de forma tão nobre à ciência e à vida. Um bem haja a todas as crianças, pela generosidade e solidariedade reveladas pela cor, pelas formas e imaginação dos seus azulejos. A SONAE Distribuição definiu há vários anos uma política de solidariedade social que se tem materializado em acções de grande notoriedade. SONAE The Magic of colours With the CD “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, in which the reasons behind John's leukaemia are demystified and taught, the North Histocompatibility Center in particular Dr. Helena Alves managed to give soul to this project, in which so many children reveal a creativity, that not even real artists would express so well. Those who know or experience an oncological illness, recognise in the CHN work a dedication that goes beyond professionalism and science. This constant gift to others, this daily struggle of knowing and let know in such a committed, uninterested way, comforts and increases the experience of those who search it. Thus, this project is the living testimony of all those who dedicate themselves in such a noble way to science and life. Thanks to all the children, for the generosity and solidarity revealed by the colour, shapes and imagination of their tiles. Serviço de Transplante de Medula Óssea IPO-Porto Medula: a Fábrica da Vida É com imensa satisfação e um enorme orgulho que participo nesta excepcional iniciativa do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, que é consequência de dois aspectos igualmente excepcionais da sociedade, como são a capacidade de dádiva e a mobilização daqueles que são o nosso bem mais precioso, as crianças. No actual contexto social, nada é mais premente do que estimular o interesse das crianças e jovens para questões de tão grande importância, como é, sem dúvida alguma, a questão relacionada com a doação. O pedido feito às crianças das escolas de todo o país para que dessem expressão, em painel, aos seus sentimentos sobre o tema “Medula: a fábrica da vida” veio mostrar, de forma comovente, a pureza de sentimentos das crianças, o seu sentido da vida a sua disponibilidade para lutar por aqueles que sofrem. Este evento surge associado à criação dum Banco Nacional de Sangue do Cordão Umbilical, uma lacuna importante do SNS, que vem dar resposta ao tratamento de doenças graves sobretudo das crianças e em simultâneo colocar-nos, nesta área, em pé de igualdade com os países mais evoluídos. Num momento de alguma perturbação social em que o egoísmo, o individualismo, a indiferença pelo sofrimento alheio e as desigualdades gritantes prevalecem, em que parece que a nossa vida apenas se rege por números estatísticos, as crianças de todo o país gritaram: estamos aqui, estamos presentes, queremos colaborar na divulgação deste projecto. Bone Marrow Transplant Service Portuguese Institute of Oncology - Porto Bone Marrow: the Factory of Life It is with great pleasure and honour that I participate in this remarkable initiative from Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, which comes consequent of two major characteristics of society namely the capacity to give and the mobilization of our great gift, the children. In the present social context, nothing is more pressing than stimulate children and young generation interest, for this big issue that is donation. The request made to the children from school from all over the country to express on panels their feeling about the issue “Bone Marrow: The Factory of life” showed in a touching way the purity of children feelings, their meaning of life and their willingness to fight for those who suffer. This event comes associated with launch of a national umbilical cord blood bank, an important gap in the NHS, which will give an answer to the treatment of severe illnesses mainly in children, and simultaneously will put us, in this field, up to the same standards as other developed countries. In this moment of some social perturbation in which selfishness, individuality, indifference to other's suffering, shocking social disparities remain, looking like our lives are only controlled by statistics, children from all over the country screamed - we are here, we are present, we want to cooperate in this project divulgation. 9. Sociedade Portuguesa de Transplantação A transplantação de órgãos e tecidos é hoje em dia uma realidade em progresso permanente e graças a ela é possível salvar pessoas para a vida ou, no mínimo, para uma nova vida. Ao mesmo tempo, numa sociedade virada para o ter, mais que para o ser, a doação de células e tecidos é um acto sublime de generosidade. Quando morremos, os nossos órgãos de nada valem. Porque não doa-los e através deles continuarmos a "viver" noutro alguém? Se a doação em vida de células e tecidos é ainda uma forma de generosidade maior, é bom saber que ultrapassamos o ter, para poder ser mais, noutra pessoa. Deixamos neste caso de ser apenas nós. No novo organismo a quem nos damos, nem sempre somos aceites apesar do condicionamento que tentamos criar através dos tratamentos. Que isso não nos leve a sentir frustrados ou nos inunde de tristeza. Damos sem nada esperar. Todos na vida deveríamos lutar pela tolerância. Contudo, esta não é fácil acontecer. Também na área do transplante a grande luta é encontrarmos os mecanismos de tolerância de modo a que o novo ser a que nos damos, seja aceite sem necessidade de introduzirmos novos factores. A doação sem nada pedir, é sem dúvida o sinal de uma sociedade mais humana e mais rica. Ao ver o excelente trabalho feito por jovens alunos das escolas de vários pontos do país sobre transplante de medula, fico com a certeza que é possível mobilizar uma sociedade "adormecida" para causas nobres. Mais uma vez digo, que a doação de células ou órgãos é um acto sublime de generosidade. Na verdade, o que doamos, não nos fazendo falta, vai permitir uma nova vida. 9. Portuguese Society for Transplantation Organ and tissue transplan- tation is nowadays a reality in permanent progress and thanks to it is possible to save people to life or at least to a new life. At the same time, in a society turned to having, rather than being, donation of cells and tissues is a sublime act of generosity. When we die, our organs have no value. Why not donate them and trough them continue “to live” in another human being? If cells and tissues donation during life is a bigger way of generosity, it is good to know that we got over having, to be more, in someone else. We stop being just ourselves in this case. In the new organism to which we give ourselves, we are not always accepted regardless of the conditioning we try to create through treatments. But this shouldn't let us down, frustrated or flooded by sadness. We give without expecting anything. We all should fight for tolerance. Even though, it doesn't come easily. Also in the transplantation field the big fight is to find mechanisms for tolerance so that what we give to others is accepted without the need of introducing new factors. Donation without asking for nothing is with no doubt a sign of a more human and stronger society. Looking at the excellent work done by young students from schools all over the country on the theme of bone marrow transplantation I'm sure that it is possible to mobilize a “sleeping” society for such noble causes. 10. B-Simple no Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte A luta contra a leucemia tem tido uma importância crescente ao longo dos últimos anos, tanto por parte de entidades públicas, como privadas. O tema Transplante de medula óssea relembra a sua importância no tratamento de doenças oncológicas, nomeadamente da Leucemia. A sua doação é de extrema importância para as pessoas que estão à espera duma oportunidade de cura. Por uma questão de responsabilidade social, é necessário agir em solidariedade para com estas pessoas, seja através da participação em projectos de divulgação, ou através da doação de medula. O sucesso obtido no concurso Painéis de Azulejos pelo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, na sua luta contra a leucemia, sensibilizou-me pelos resultados obtidos. Os painéis apresentam imagens de uma beleza profunda, que expressam a forma como os autores sentiram esta causa. A B-Simple, não indiferente a estas questões sociais e, como parceira tecnológica de longa data do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, tem muito gosto em se associar a este tipo de acções. B-Simple at North Histocompatibility Center In recent years the fight against leukaemia has had growing relevance amongst public and private institutions. The issue of bone marrow transplantation reminds us of it s importance in the treatment of oncological disorders, especially leukaemia. Its donation is of extreme significance for the people who are awaiting a chance to be treated. As a matter of social responsibility, it is necessary to show solidarity with these people, by either participating in awareness projects or by giving bone marrow. The results of this successful tile panel competition, launched by CHN in the fight against leukaemia, have moved me. The panels show images of great beauty, which express the way the authors experienced this cause. B-Simple is not indifferent to social questions and as long time technological partner of CHN has great pleasure in being associated with this type of activity. Registo Britânico de Medula Óssea Esta é uma colecção impressionante e comovedora de quadros criados por crianças em idade escolar, entre os 10 e os 18 anos e que tem como objectivo consciencializar para o gesto da dádiva altruísta. Esta colecção foi criada à volta de assuntos que envolvem a doação e transplante de medula óssea, mas mais importante ainda, encoraja as pessoas a tornarem-se dadores para doentes que necessitam de um transplante mas que, infelizmente não têm um dador compatível na sua família. Este tópico atraiu a imaginação de muitas crianças em todo o Portugal, incluindo algumas de áreas rurais distantes, desde o litoral até à fronteira incluindo ilhas dos arquipélagos da Madeira e Açores. Esta exposição que foi preparada pelos alunos, professores e outros educadores e pessoal clínico envolvido no campo da dádiva e transplante de células e órgãos, irá agora ser apresentada em várias partes do país com o objectivo de promover debates acerca destes temas e, com um pouco de sorte como resultado, mais pessoas considerarão a possibilidade de se tornar dadores de medula óssea. Esta é uma excelente iniciativa. Também tem um significado especial que estes quadros tenham sido criados por crianças em idade escolar e jovens adultos uma vez que é nestas camadas jovens que as ideias e valores maravilhosos de altruísmo e generosidade devem ser reforçados de forma a que quando estas crianças cresçam elas não estejam apenas preparadas para doar mas que, mais importante ainda, entendam o significado do gesto generoso de ser tornarem dadores e desta forma possam salvar a vida de outra pessoa. British Bone Marrow Registry This is an impressive and moving collection of paintings created by school children from the age of 10 to18 and which is aimed at increasing awareness of the gesture of altruistic donation. This collection has been built around issues surrounding bone marrow donation and bone marrow transplantation but more importantly encourages people to become donors for patients in need of a transplant but who unfortunately do not have a compatible donor from within the family. This topic has captured the imagination of many children from all over Portugal including some from distant and rural areas, from the seaside to the border including Portuguese islands from Madeira and Azores archipelago. This exhibition which has been put together by the students, teachers and other educators and clinical staff involved in the field of cell and organ donation and transplantation, will now be presented in various parts of the country with the aim of promoting discussions around these subjects and hopefully as a result, more people will consider the possibility of becoming bone marrow donors. This is an excellent and creative initiative. It is also of particular significance that these painting have been produced by school children and young adults since it is at these early ages that the wonderful ideas and values of altruisms and generosity should be reinforced so that when these children grow up they will not only be prepared to donate but more importantly, will understand the significance of the generous gesture of becoming a donor and in this way save somebody else's life. It requires solidarity from the donor (within the family and/or the unrelated population). "Bone marrow: the factory of life" is an essential media tool to teach solidarity to the young generation. It is smart, funny, informative and has already demonstrated its efficacy. Not only there is a marvellous interactive CD, thanks to Dr. Helena Alves from the North Histocompatibility Center in Porto, but now the young children have painted glazed tile panels that reflect their solidarity, joy and enthusiasm to help the world. Autoridade para os Serviços de Sangue e Transplantação Um programa educacional para a doação de precursores de células do sangue, Banco de Sangue do Cordão Umbilical e Registo de Células de Adulto Melhor do que publicidade paga, algumas iniciativas para mobilizar estudantes dentro da escola, são potencialmente mais significativas e eficientes. Neste livro, um número de maravilhosos e impressionantes painéis de azulejos são o resultado do trabalho de estudantes de diferentes idades depois de lhes ter sido explicado o significado dos precursores das células do sangue para o tratamento de alguns pacientes. A criatividade e generosidade são tão comuns entre os jovens, que o resultado não é completamente surpreendente. Dificilmente se poderia esperar, no entanto, que este aparentemente modesto compromisso, pudesse resultar em tão maravilhosa colecção de arte. Authority to Blood Services and Transplantation An educational program for donation of blood cell precursors Umbilical cord blood bank and adult cells registry Better than paid advertising, some initiatives mobilizing students within the school are potentially more meaningful and efficient. In this book a number of beautiful amazing tiles panels are the result of the work of students of different ages after the meaning of blood cell precursors for the treatment of a number of patients was explained to them. Creativeness and generosity are so common among young people, which is not at all surprising. You could hardly expect, however, that this apparently modest commitment could result in such a beautiful collection of art. Those young artists I'm sure they have been deeply touched by the message of solidarity conveyed to them as the need for samples of blood and frozen umbilical cords to treat patients. An enormous goal as the result of such a small effort: keeping frozen cells and registering a large number of voluntary potential donors. Their paintings are beautiful. People that had the idea and gave their collaboration for this work of the students deserve our gratitude for such an important achievement. 14. Associação Portuguesa de Leucemias e Linfomas A medula óssea é, sem dúvida, a Fábrica da Vida. O concurso, lançado pelo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte (CHN) foi, é e será, pelo retorno inigualável, um projecto brilhante e audaz de passar informação aos mais novos. Para poderem participar na "competição" os alunos de vários ciclos tiveram de pesquisar e seleccionar informação sobre a medula óssea: - O que é? - Para que serve? - Quem pode salvar? - Quem pode ser dador? - Que doenças pode curar? Tiveram de recolher informação para formarem a sua opinião. Desta forma, os mitos existentes sobre a transplantação e dádiva vão-se desvanecendo. O estigma associado à dor e à cirurgia (entre outros), por parte do dador estão a ser quebrados nas gerações mais novas, levando-os a falar com os pais sobre as suas descobertas e sobre o trabalho realizado para o concurso. As camadas mais novas da sociedade estão a alicerçar um futuro altruísta, no qual a sociedade informada não terá medo de ser dadora. Portuguese Association to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Without a doubt, bone marrow is “The Factory of Life”. The contest created by the Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte (CHN) was, is and will be a brilliant and clever way to teach children and it will have an unmatchable return. To be able to participate in the "competition", students of various ages had to search for and select information about bone marrow: - What is it? - Why is bone marrow needed? - Who can be saved? - Who can be a donor? - What diseases can it heal? They had to search for information to create their opinion. In this way, myths about transplantation and donation are being dissipated. The stigma associated with pain and surgery (amongst others), suffered by the donor, are being broken down in the younger people. This contest has promoted discussion with their parents about their discoveries and the work they have done to participate. The younger generations of society are laying the foundation for an altruist future, where an informed society will not be afraid to be donors.   • 8. 1. Prefácio Os Painéis e a Verdade Que iniciativa tão arrojada e que resultado tão feliz! Este livro prova bem que um Centro de Histocompatibilidade pode não ser apenas um lugar onde se pratica uma técnica de muita responsabilidade e rigor, ligada à transplantação de tecidos e órgãos. O do Norte, concebido apaixonadamente pelo seu primeiro Director, Armando Mendes, e agora entregue às mãos sensíveis de Helena Alves, quis sempre ser uma estrutura muito respeitada pela sua qualidade científico-técnica, claro está, mas aberta à humanização de todo o seu trabalho. Sentindo bem que, com a amostra de sangue para tipar, não eram apenas os linfócitos que entravam no Centro mas a pessoa de onde provinham e que, tantas vezes, estava no limiar silencioso e austero da morte. Em muitas patologias que ameaçam a vida as crianças estão presentes e o seu sofrimento toca-nos de forma mais aguda, tornando ainda mais difícil o diálogo necessário sobre o que se está a passar no organismo vivo ameaçado de morte. Sentindo bem esta dificuldade, Helena Alves e os seus colaboradores, no Centro, avançaram para uma iniciativa que posso resumir assim: vamos nós para o meio dos nossos jovens, nas Escolas, vamos dizer- lhes a verdade sobre o que parece ser um mistério; vamos dizer-lhes que o sangue pode estar doente e que, para o pôr bom, precisamos de ir buscar as células que nele circulam a outras pessoas, muitas vezes os seus irmãos, jovens como eles. E vamos pedir-lhes que, nas suas aulas de artes visuais, com a ajuda dos seus docentes, exprimam em linguagem estética, livremente. o que sentiram quando a verdade da doença e da recolha de medula óssea e da sua transplantação lhes foi transmitida como a única forma de afastar a ameaça sobre a vida, mesmo na flor da juventude. Podia não ter acontecido nada. E em muitos de nós, ouvindo falar desta iniciativa, perpassaria a convicção do fracasso. Eu, que aos oitenta anos ainda mantenho muita fé na utopia, não acreditaria se não visse. E o que vi deixou-me surpreso e, logo a seguir, 1. Preface The Panels and the Truth What an audacious initiative and what a happy result! This book testifies well that a Histocompatibility Centre may not only be a place where a rigorous technique of high responsibility, associated with organ and tissue transplantation, is carried out. The North Histocompatibility Centre passionately conceived by its first Director Armando Mendes and now in the sensible hands of Helena Alves, always wanted to be a highly respected centre for its scientific and technical quality, of course, but open to human touch in all its work. Feeling well that, with a blood sample to type, not only lymphocytes entered the Centre, but also the person from whom they came, who, so often, was on the silent and austere doorstep of death. In many life-threatening pathologies, children are present, and their suffering touches us sharply, making yet more difficult the necessary dialogue regarding what is happening in the living body, threatened by death. Aware of this difficulty, Helena Alves and her collaborators in the Centre, moved towards an initiative that I can summarize as follows: we are going to the schools, among our young people; we are going to tell them the Truth about what appears to be a mystery; we are going to tell them that blood may be sick and to make it better, we need to get cells which circulate in others, often brothers and sisters, young like them. Then, we are going to ask them to freely express, in an aesthetic language in their art classes with the help of their teachers, what they felt when the truth about the disease and the collection of bone marrow and its graft was explained to them, as being the only way to push away this threat to life, even at youth-fullness. Nothing may have happened. And for many of us, hearing about this initiative, would pass by the conviction that it would doomed to failure. I myself, who at eighty years old, still maintain a lot of faith in utopia, would not have believed it if I had not seen it. And what I saw left me surprised and then moved.
  • 9. comovido. Dei comigo a pensar assim: Como aconteceu que uma mensagem técnica, passando pelo espírito destas crianças, algumas muito novas, se tenha transformado em objectos estéticos? Como foi possível que estas crianças, ouvindo e vendo que a medula é fábrica de vida mas pode ser também lugar de morte, deram um sentido a esta informação e com ela fizeram estes Painéis? Não vou agora, aqui, dissertar sobre o mistério da criação estética e a génese da obra de arte. Mas tenho de encontrar uma explicação. E a que ofereço, com toda a humildade, aos futuros leitores deste livro, que vão olhar as reproduções com espírito crítico, é esta. Os profissionais do Centro tiveram a coragem de dizer a estas crianças, a verdade e nada mais que a verdade. As questões de vida e de morte só se resolvem bem num universo de seriedade e verdade. Os jovens, ao pintarem estes painéis, estavam a transmitir-nos a verdade que receberam, a forma como a integraram nas suas consciências emocionais e o modo como julgam que a verdade pode e deve ser transmitida aos outros. Cada um ao seu estilo, certamente. Mais naif ou mais elaborado. Mais cromático ou mais desenhado. Mas em todos pressenti a verdade intrínseca do ser e não o fingimento do falso artista ou do amador jeitoso. Saí, como disse, comovido. E trouxe comigo o olhar estranho, misterioso, não sei se triste se confiante, quase só esboçado, numa jovem de crânio desnudado pela quimioterapia. Há verdade neste olhar, porque a “alma humana é um abismo”. I found myself wondering: How was it possible, that a technical message passing through the minds of these children, some of them very young, had been transformed into aesthetic objects? How was it possible that these children, by hearing and seeing that bone marrow is a factory of life, but that may also be a place of death, gave a meaning to this information, and with it made these Panels? I am not going now, here, to make a dissertation on the mystery of aesthetic creation and the genesis of the work of art. But, I must find an explanation. And the one that I offer, with all humility, to future readers of this book, who will look at these reproductions with a critical mind, is this: The professionals of the Histocompatibility Centre had the courage to tell the children the truth and nothing but the truth. Questions of life and death are only solved in a seriousness and truthful universe. Young people, by painting these panels were transmitting to us the truth they received, the way it was integrated into their emotional consciousness and the way in which they judge truth may and should be transmitted to others. Each one in its own style certainly. Some more naïve and some more elaborate. Some more chromatic and some more detailed. But in all of them I felt the intrinsic truth of being and not the pretence of the false artist or the clever amateur. I left, as I said, moved. And I brought away with me the mysterious and strange look, unsure if sad or trusting, almost only sketched, of a young girl with the skull denuded by chemotherapy. There is Truth in this look, because “the human soul is an abysm”.   • 10. 2. Nota introductória “Eu sou o Francisco! Recebi medula da Mariana, que me salvou a vida”. Quem pode ficar indiferente à marcante experiência destes dois pequenos irmãos! E que melhor exemplo para iniciar esta viagem, proporcionada pela imaginação e criatividade de crianças e jovens do primário ao secundário, de todos os pontos do País, Continente e Ilhas. Para tanto bastou a imaginação e o enorme dinamismo da Dr.ª Helena Alves, Directora do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte – CHN, de pôr as crianças a debater o tema da Leucemia e a importância da Medula Óssea. Com alguns jovens colaboradores, desenvolveu um CD-ROM, em linguagem muito acessível, que intitulou de “Medula: a fábrica da vida”, e no âmbito da Educação para a Saúde, lançou o desafio aos jovens alunos de todo o País, convidando-os ainda a expressarem artisticamente as suas ideias, a serem avaliadas por júri a nomear. Para esse objectivo foi criado o respectivo regulamento. Não tenho dúvidas em como milhares de crianças assim estimuladas, muito evoluiram na sua curiosidade para esta área, e o mesmo se poderá afirmar relativamente à área das artes, tão bem reflectido nos painéis de azulejos concretizados, onde a alegria de pintar o tema, a par da criatividade, ressalta com uma força impressionante! É uma excelente iniciativa que, por si só e pela extraordinária resposta, a todos obriga reflectir. E em quantas outras áreas e formas não será possível fazer brotar essa “alegria” das crianças, incutindo-lhes desde logo também o estímulo para o desenvolvimento da sua auto-estima e confiança? A Criança é futuro, e como fonte singular de energia que representa, merece todo um investimento de educação a potenciar mais e mais. “Este CD-ROM foi desenvolvido com o intuito de estimular a curiosidade natural dos mais pequenos pelas Ciências da Vida e, em particular, pela Leucemia e pela importância da doação de medula óssea.” 2. Introduction “I am Francisco and I received bone marrow from Mariana which saved my life” Who can remain untouched by the emotional experience of this brother and sister? And what better example to begin this journey provided by these kids imagination and creativity from all over the country? This work was possible due to the vision and great energy of Dr. Helena Alves, Director of Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, who encourage the children to debate the theme of leukaemia and the importance of bone marrow. With some young collaborators, an interactive CD ROM was developed in easy language, titled “Bone marrow: The factory of life” and in the field of health education, young students from all over the country were challenged to express their ideas through art, to be judged by a jury. For this purpose, regulations were established. “This CD ROM was developed with the intention of stimulating the natural curiosity of the little ones for life science, in particular for leukaemia and the importance of Bone Marrow donation.” I am sure that thousands of children stimulated in this way got new ideas in the fields of Science and Art, reflected in the tile panels presented, where the joy of illustrating the theme together with the creativity, bursts with energy. This is an excellent initiative which in itself and by the extraordinary response makes us all think. In how many other areas and ways would it be possible to make this happiness blossom in children also encouraging them from the outset to develop self-esteem and confidence? The children are the future and a unique, special source of energy. They deserve all the investment in education to achieve their full potential.

Não resisto a referir o exemplo Venezuelano, “El Sistema”, programa de enorme sucesso, de ocupação e reabilitação de jovens em risco, que tem como objectivo ultrapassar a pobreza física com a riqueza espiritual através da música, tirando partido da criatividade, imaginação e capacidade de aprendizagem. Todos os dias depois das aulas, mais de 300.000 crianças dos bairros pobres, a partir dos dois anos (iniciação aos ritmos) e dos quatro (iniciação instrumental), participam neste programa. O seu mentor, muitas vezes apelidado de louco, foi suficientemente visionário para fazer esta aposta nessa tremenda “fonte de energia” que são as crianças. Resultado: mais de 300 orquestras jovens grassam por toda a Venezuela; a Orquestra Juvenil Nacional realiza espectáculos por todo o Mundo, sempre com lotação esgotada e o seu jovem maestro, Gustavo Dudamel, de 26 anos, super estrela internacional, considerado como um dos melhores da actualidade é o seu expoente máximo! Dá gosto observar a sua alegria de tocar música! Também com este projecto se pretendeu criar os “músicos do futuro”, os obreiros da luta contra a Leucemia, os construtores das alegrias dos doentes e famílias atormentadas pela doença! Com este livro, as exposições itinerantes e posterior incorporação dos painéis nas paredes do novo edifício de expansão do CHN, mais do que divulgar estes trabalhos excelentes sobre a problemática da Leucemia e o Transplante de Medula, pretende dar- se mais um contributo para estimular a reflexão sobre as “alegrias” por explorar nas nossas crianças. Desde o meu primeiro contacto com o Projecto que fiquei muito sensibilizado, e aceitei de imediato, com entusiasmo, o convite para colaborar na sua organização e gestão. Foi um trabalho gratificante e sinto-me honrado por nele ter participado. Obrigado Dr.ª Helena Alves por em tão boa hora me ter lançado o desafio. I cannot refrain from referring to the Venezualian example “El Sistema”, an enormously successful program for the occupation and rehabilitation of young people at risk, which has as its aim to overcome poverty by means of spiritual wellbeing through music, using creativity, imagination and learning. Every day after classes more than 300.000 children from poor neighbourhoods from the age of 2 (introduction to rhythm) and 4 (introduction to instruments) participate in this program. The person behind the program, often called crazy, was sufficient visionary to gamble on this tremendous source of energy which children represent. Result: more than 300 youth orchestras were developed across Venezuela; the National Youth Orchestra produces shows all over the world always sold out and the young conductor Gustavo Dudamel, 26 year old, an international superstar currently considered one of the best, is a major attraction. It is delightful to see their joy in playing music. With this Project we also intend to create “the future musicians”, workers in the fight against leukaemia, builders of happiness for patients and their families tortured by this disease. With this book, itinerant exhibitions and incorporation of the panels in the walls of the new building of CHN extension, besides publicising this excellent work about the problem of leukaemia and bone marrow transplantation, we intend to stimulate reflection about “the cheers” yet to be explored in our children. From my first contact with the Project I was touched and immediately accepted with enthusiasm the invitation to participate in its organization and management. Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte “Medula Óssea: A Fábrica da Vida” Painéis de azulejos O Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte é parte da Lusotransplante, designação adoptada pelos 3 Centros de Histocompatibilidade em Portugal (o do Norte no Porto, o do Centro em Coimbra e o do Sul em Lisboa), criados em 1983 como organizações públicas de saúde com autonomia, sendo os três primeiros directores destas instituições o Dr. Armando Mendes no Porto, a Dra Henrique Breda em Coimbra e o Professor Machado Caetano em Lisboa, todos já aposentados. O Registo Nacional de Dadores de Medula Óssea CEDACE, sem instalações nem quadro de pessoal, está integrado nos três Centros, cujos edifícios e colaboradores são o lar e os braços que alimentam o Registo. A grande actividade dos 3 centros para criar o Registo Nacional de Dadores de Medula Óssea não relacionados começou em Junho de 2003 depois da decisão do governo de apoiar financeiramente a actividade do Registo. Como forças importantes neste combate, salientam-se as famílias, a Associação Portuguesa Contra a Leucemia (APCL) que foi um excelente aliado para obter apoio politico e financeiro para o Registo, a Associação Portuguesa de Leucemias e Linfomas (APLL) e a Comunicação Social. Forças de toda a sociedade civil, empresas, grupos religiosos, associações desportivas, políticos, jovens e adultos, mobilizaram a sociedade portuguesa para registar dadores voluntários de medula óssea. Parlamento e governo, construtores de opinião, deputados e o Primeiro-Ministro registaram-se e têm apoiado as actividades dos Centros de Histocompatibilidade. Até agora, o registo de dadores de medula óssea não relacionados continua a ser uma matéria de grande interesse para os media, que têm sido uma ajuda inestimável. Portugal atingiu em 3 anos o terceiro lugar no ranking europeu de dadores de medula óssea não relacionados por milhão de habitantes, com esta exemplar união de esforços. 3. North Histocompatibility Center “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life” Glazed Tile Panels The North Histocompatibility Centre is part of the Lusotransplante, name adopted by 3 Histocompatibility Centres in Portugal (North-Porto, Center-Coimbra and South-Lisboa), created in 1983 as autonomous public health organizations, being the 3 first Directors, Armando Mendes in Porto, Henriqueta Breda in Coimbra and Machado Caetano in Lisbon, all of them retired. The National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors CEDACE, is within the 3 Centres, whose buildings and staff are the homes and arms that feed the registry. The strong activity of the 3 Centres to create the National Registry of Unrelated Bone Marrow Donors started in June 2003 after decision of financial support of the activity by the government. As very important forces in this fight, stand out the families, the Portuguese Association Against Leukaemia (APCL) that has been an excellent ally getting political and financial support to the activity of registering bone marrow unrelated donors, the Portuguese Association for Leukaemia and Lymphoma (APLL) and the Media. Forces from all community, enterprises, religious groups, sports associations, politics, youth and adults, mobilized the Portuguese society to register as Bone Marrow donors. Parliament and government, opinion makers, deputies and the Prime Minister registered and are supporting the activities of the Histocompatibility Centres. Until now, the register of unrelated donors is still a matter of great interest of media which have been of inestimable help. Portugal reached the third place in 3 years in the European ranking of Unrelated Bone Marrow Donors per million of inhabitants with this
  • 13. O CD “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida”, que concebi e editei em 2005, pretendeu preparar o futuro e fazer das crianças de hoje os dadores de amanhã. Verão a doação de medula como uma participação normal da população saudável para tentar melhorar a saúde dos doentes com leucemia espalhados pelo mundo. A actual dependência dos media para publicitar a doação será substituída pela crença que a solidariedade é um dever pessoal e não pode ser substituída por nada no mundo. O CD intitulado “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida”, foi criado para ensinar os conceitos básicos sobre medula e os constituintes do sangue, leucemia, o tratamento da leucemia, transplante de medula óssea, Histocompatibilidade, biologia das células do sangue, cromossomas, DNA, a herança dos haplótipos, a recolha de medula e como se tornar um dador voluntário de medula óssea. O CD, dividido em sete partes, usa várias técnicas de áudio visual, desde construção gráfica a filme. Dirigido a várias idades, tem a “ ”, uma criança afectada por Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda, um trabalho gráfico; “ ”, um texto com figuras acerca da leucemia, o seu tratamento e o transplante de medula óssea; “ ”, uma apresentação em PowerPoint preparada por um grupo de jovens (16 anos) num curto curso de verão oferecido pelo CHN a jovens interessados em ciência; “ ”, um filme mostrando imagens reais do trabalho de laboratório com comentários da directora Helena Alves sobre a organização e história da Histocompatibilidade Portuguesa, actividades do Centro, Leucemia e Transplantação; “ ” e “ ”, jogos engraçados dirigidos aos mais novos, para testar a aprendizagem dos conceitos básicos da ciência ensinados no CD; “ ”, informações para pais e professores sobre o CD; “ ”, informação sobre sites internacionais no campo da Leucemia, Transplante de Medula Óssea, Dadores de Medula Óssea e Registos de Dadores. Nos últimos anos, “Educação para a Saúde” tornou- se uma interessante forma de ensinar conceitos sobre como adoptar atitudes para uma saúde melhor. The CD “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, that I conceived and edited in 2005 intended to prepare the future, making today's children the donors of the near future. They will see bone marrow donation as a normal participation of healthy population in order to provide better health to leukaemia patients around the world. The actual dependence from the media to publicise bone marrow donation will be replaced by believing that solidarity is a personal duty and can not be substituted by anything in the world. The CD entitled “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida”, that means “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, has been created to teach basic concepts about Bone Marrow and blood constitution, Leukaemia, Leukaemia treatment, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Histocompatibility, biology of blood cells, chromosomes, DNA, haplotypes inheritance, bone marrow collection and how to become a Bone Marrow Donor. The CD, divided in 7 parts, uses several audio visual techniques, from graphic construction to a film. Directed to several age groups, it has ” ”, a kid affected by Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a graphic technique work; “ ”, a text with figures about Leukaemia, it's treatment and Bone Marrow Transplantation; “ ”, a PowerPoint presentation prepared by a group of teenagers (16 years old) in a short summer course offered by the North Histocompatibility Centre to young people interested in science; “ ”, a film showing real images from the laboratory work with comments from the Director Helena Alves about the Portuguese Histocompatibility organization and history, Centre activities, Leukaemia and Transplantation; “ ” and “ ”, funny games directed to younger people, to test knowledge of basic science concepts taught in the CD; “ ”, information to parents and teachers about the CD; “ ”, information about international sites in the field of Leukaemia, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Bone Marrow Donors and Registries. Enfrentando a doença, doentes e seus familiares estão altamente motivados para participar na procura de soluções. Esta motivação continua a ser uma ferramenta não explorada para atingir melhor saúde. A transplantação, como recurso poderoso para tratar doentes com diferentes doenças, é um campo da medicina interessante para doentes, dadores, políticos e media. Inovação na educação para a saúde pode ser uma boa experiência para aplicar, quer a doentes quer a dadores. O CD interactivo “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida” teve grande sucesso em grupos de crianças, jovens e adultos, doentes e dadores, professores e pais. A multiplicação dos 35000 CDs foi custeada pelo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, o registo nacional de dadores CEDACE e o grupo SONAE. O CD foi distinguido com o Prémio Hospital do Futuro – Educação 2006- 2007 como o mais inovador trabalho de EDUCAÇÃO PARA A SAÚDE nos últimos 2 anos. A iniciativa de distribuir o CD pelas escolas de todo o País foi o primeiro passo. Nos últimos 2 anos propus às escolas a discussão do assunto nas aulas de Ciências e a pintura de painéis de azulejos nas aulas de educação visual e tecnológica expressando o seu sentimento sobre o tema. O objectivo era mobilizar os jovens para fazerem pinturas e um concurso entre escolas com painéis de azulejos pintados à mão. Esses painéis serão integrados nas paredes do actual e do já projectado, novo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte. A participação desses jovens simboliza a construção conjunta de soluções futuras para doentes com Leucemia, a solidariedade e a partilha de responsabilidades para ajudar pacientes. Melhor que cimento, pessoas são o material que precisamos para construir o futuro, o novo “edifício” do Centro de Histocompatibilidade e do Registo Nacional. Elas serão a parte mais importante da construção, com elas, por elas. In the most recent years, “Education for health” became an increasingly interesting way of teaching concepts about how to actively adopt attitudes for a better health. Increasing communication between health professionals and society helps to promote new lifestyles and can help reduce costs with diagnosis and treatment in the future. Face to disease, patients and their relatives are highly motivated to participate looking for solutions. This motivation is still an unexplored tool to achieve better Health. Transplantation, as a powerful resource to treat patients with different diseases, is an interesting field of Medicine to patients, donors, politicians and media. Innovation in Education for Health can be a good experience to apply either in patients or in donors. The Interactive CD “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, had an excellent success in groups of children, youth and adults, patients and donors, teachers and parents. The production of 35000 CDs was funded by the North Histocompatibility Centre, the National Registry CEDACE and SONAE group. The CD was distinguished by the Portuguese Prize Hospital of the Future - Education 2006-2007 as the most innovative work of EDUCATION FOR HEALTH over the last 2 years. The first step of this initiative was the distribution of this CD to all schools in the country. In the last 2 years I proposed to schools to discuss the theme in Science classes and to paint tile panels in visual and technologic education classes, expressing student's feelings about the subject. The aim was to mobilize young people to make paintings and school contests with hand painted glazed tile panels (like the Portuguese traditional “azulejo”). Those panels will be part of the walls of the present building and the projected new building of the North Histocompatibility Centre.

A Vida é Começo e Fim Caminho Caminho A Verdade da Vida nós podemos mudá-la The participation of young people symbolizes the joint construction for future solutions to leukaemia patients, the solidarity and sharing of responsibility to help patients. Better than concrete, people are the material we need to construct the future, the new “building” of the Histocompatibility Centre and the National Registry. They will be the most important part of that construction, with them for them. Teachers and students excellent adhesion to the project resulted in 101 tile panels and 129 projects of tile panels sent by schools from all the country.   • 16. O belo trabalho desenvolvido por estes estudantes e professores é a prova de que podemos mobilizar pessoas saudáveis para colaborar com os profissionais e governos para auxiliar os doentes. Os painéis iniciarão uma exposição itinerante de 5 - 28 de Janeiro no Porto (na Casa do Médico da Secção Regional do Norte da Ordem dos Médicos) e continuará em outras cidades. É importante que a mensagem de compromisso e solidariedade destas crianças seja conhecida e seguida. Foi para mim um privilégio e uma honra ter recebido estes painéis e uma experiência única e gratificante que nunca esquecerei. Foi-o também para todos os colaboradores do CHN. O primeiro painel é de uma turma de crianças de 6-8 anos onde está uma criança transplantada. O Painel diz: “ .” Mariana é a sua pequenina irmã... Este painel abrirá o livro. O livro será distribuído em Congressos de Transplantação, firmas, escolas, e será feito um CD também para distribuir nas exposições com pinturas de todos os painéis e projectos recebidos. Como eu não podia prever o impacto do desafio que lancei às escolas, as decisões acerca das exposições e este livro, foram tomadas recentemente. A responsabilidade de divulgar a mensagem de solidariedade destas crianças forçou-me a envolver mais e mais pessoas para a organização da exposição e do livro, assim como para a preparação do CD. Assim, pedi a muitas pessoas, amigos, familiares, colegas, colaboradores do Centro e patrocinadores para me ajudarem a preparar estes eventos. O curto tempo (menos de 6 meses) para preparar tudo, tornou possível a sua realização apenas porque tive um inestimável apoio para prosseguir de muitas pessoas maravilhosas dentro e fora de Portugal. The Truth is that many people suffering from leukaemia in the world need help and healthy people can save them registering as Bone Marrow Donors and giving Umbilical Cord Blood at birth, to Public Cord Blood Banks. The Truth is that we need to do it now and prepare our youth to this Truth. The nice work of these students and teachers is the proof that we can mobilize healthy people to cooperate with health professionals and governments to help patients. The panels will start an itinerant exhibition from 5 - 28 January in Porto (in the North region House of the National Medical Association- Ordem dos Médicos) and will go on to several cities. It is important that the message of commitment and solidarity of these children be known and followed.   • 23. 4. Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto A FMUP iniciou há uma década uma atitude de abertura à comunidade onde está inserida e serve com muitas vertentes. Recebemos alunos do ensino secundário, participamos em iniciativas com outras instituições e sobretudo esforçamo-nos por ter uma presença assídua e de forte afirmação activa na comunicação social através do nosso próprio Gabinete de Relações Públicas. Pretendemos assim servir a comunidade, mas também dar-lhe a certeza de que o seu investimento produz efeitos, ao mesmo tempo que pretendemos obter a sua aprovação para o rumo que imprimimos às nossas actividades. Esta estratégia de abertura produziu efeitos que estão à vista. Os jovens da região procuram-nos para estudar Medicina. Procuram-nos em massa, muito além da nossa capacidade de os receber demonstrando a opinião que eles próprios e as suas famílias têm sobre a FMUP. Os serviços públicos, têm funções sociais definidos do exterior e vivem à custa dos impostos dos contribuintes. O seu funcionamento serve para lhes proporcionar serviços e tem de ser transparentes. No caso do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, os bons serviços à comunidade requerem elevada competência técnica com sólida vertente científica e resposta rápida às necessidades das estruturas envolventes. Esta iniciativa “Medula: A Fábrica da Vida” pretende chegar muito mais longe. Pretende ir até ao mundo dos afectos e dentro deste ao grupo onde os efeitos são mais profundos, as crianças. As belíssimas imagens que se recolheram reflectem uma imagem do serviço muito bem cumprida. Ao folheá- las vemos representações de carácter técnico, aproximando-se de imagens de histológicas. e outras de simbologia livre, a exprimir muito mais a envolvente afectiva das crianças: Vemos a medula e, por extensão, o Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte através dos olhos das crianças numa ideia de ligação à comunidade muito bem cumprida. Faculty of Medicine of Oporto University A decade ago FMUP started to practise an attitude of openess towards the community within which it operates and helps in several ways. We receive students from secondary schools, we participate in other institutions' initiatives, but above all, we make an effort to maintain a constant and strongly active presence in the media, through our Public Relations office. We hope, in this way, to serve the community, but also to assure them that their investment produces results and, at the same time, obtain their approval for the direction our activities have taken. This strategy of openess has produced visible effects. The younger generation comes to us in order to study medicine. However, there is such a large number, much greater than our capacity to receive them. This demonstrates the opinions which both they and their families have of FMUP. Public services have social functions which are defined from outside and are supported by tax payers money. Their purpose is to perform services which must be transparent. In the case of CHN, their good services to the community require high technical skills, with a solid scientific base and quick response to the needs of the institutions concerned..This initiative “ Bone Marrow: factory of life” intends to reach even further. It intends to reach the world of sentiment and within this world, to where the effects are felt the deepest, children. The wonderful pictures which were collected reflect a good image of the service. Going through them we see representations of technical characteristics similar to hystologic images and others, of free symbology, which express much more of the children's affectionate side. Administração Regional de Saúde do Norte O Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte ao promover a divulgação do tema: “ Medula: A Fábrica da Vida” nas escolas, através da visualização do CD, envolvendo professores, alunos e pais, tomou uma decisão correcta e pertinente. Uma atitude correcta, porque ao divulgar conhecimentos científicos à comunidade, através das crianças, está difundindo saber, a aumentar as competências das crianças e dos seus familiares quanto a doenças e tratamento das mesmas, em que o empenho de todos é essencial para proporcionar saúde aos doentes com leucemia. Quando percebemos que com pequenos e simples gestos podemos contribuir para a saúde de alguém, mais facilmente somos solidários, mais facilmente damos algo de nós. A estratégia é pertinente, porque ao estimular a criatividade e o contributo das crianças, está a mobilizar a comunidade do modo mais eficaz e efectivo. Está a envolver as futuras gerações, está fomentando valores de solidariedade de cidadania, que, ainda por cima, são os melhores veículos de mensagens para as gerações anteriores e a dos respectivos pais. Parabéns a quem teve a ideia de pedir às crianças que elaborassem azulejos sobre o tema, e aos professores e pais que apoiaram os alunos/filhos na execução de tal tarefa. Estes painéis de azulejos (arte tão portuguesa) irão perdurar no tempo a criatividade, a arte, o afecto a ternura, o empenho de tantas crianças, e vão decididamente contribuir para veicular a mensagem a “ Medula: a fábrica da vida” para outras crianças e milhares de adultos, de um modo muito bonito e efectivo. North Region Health Administration In promoting this theme “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life” in schools through the viewing of an interactive CD, involving teachers, students and parents, the Centro de Histocompatibili- dade do Norte (CHN) took a right and pertinent decision. A correct attitude, as in promoting scientific knowledge to the community, by means of the children, it is spreading knowledge, increasing the competence of children and their relatives regarding illness and their treatment, in which the work of all is essential in order to provide health for patients with leukaemia. When we understand that by small, simple gestures we can contribute to the health of someone, solidarity becomes easier, and more easily we give something of ourselves. The strategy is pertinent because, in stimulating the creativity and contribution of children, is mobilizing the community in a more efficient and effective way. It is involving future generations, promoting values of community and solidarity, which, above all are the best way for passing in the message to previous generations and their parents. SONAE A Magia das Cores A partir do CD “Medula: a Fábrica da Vida”, onde se desmistificam e ensinam os porquês da doença do pequeno João com leucemia, o Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte e particularmente a Dra. Helena Alves conseguiu dar alma a este projecto, que revela por parte de tantas crianças uma criatividade, que nem grandes pintores retratariam tão bem. Quem conhece ou passa pela experiência de uma doença oncológica, reconhece no trabalho do CHN uma dedicação que ultrapassa o profissionalismo e o científico. Esta dádiva constante aos outros, esta luta diária do saber e dar a conhecer de forma tão empenhada e desinteressada, reconforta e redobra a esperança de quem a procura. Este projecto é assim o testemunho vivo de todos os que se dedicam de forma tão nobre à ciência e à vida. Um bem haja a todas as crianças, pela generosidade e solidariedade reveladas pela cor, pelas formas e imaginação dos seus azulejos. SONAE The Magic of colours With the CD “Bone Marrow: The Factory of Life”, in which the reasons behind John's leukaemia are demystified and taught, the North Histocompatibility Center in particular Dr. Helena Alves managed to give soul to this project, in which so many children reveal a creativity, that not even real artists would express so well. Those who know or experience an oncological illness, recognise in the CHN work a dedication that goes beyond professionalism and science. This constant gift to others, this daily struggle of knowing and let know in such a committed, uninterested way, comforts and increases the experience of those who search it. Thus, this project is the living testimony of all those who dedicate themselves in such a noble way to science and life. Thanks to all the children, for the generosity and solidarity revealed by the colour, shapes and imagination of their tiles. Serviço de Transplante de Medula Óssea IPO-Porto Medula: a Fábrica da Vida É com imensa satisfação e um enorme orgulho que participo nesta excepcional iniciativa do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, que é consequência de dois aspectos igualmente excepcionais da sociedade, como são a capacidade de dádiva e a mobilização daqueles que são o nosso bem mais precioso, as crianças. No actual contexto social, nada é mais premente do que estimular o interesse das crianças e jovens para questões de tão grande importância, como é, sem dúvida alguma, a questão relacionada com a doação. O pedido feito às crianças das escolas de todo o país para que dessem expressão, em painel, aos seus sentimentos sobre o tema “Medula: a fábrica da vida” veio mostrar, de forma comovente, a pureza de sentimentos das crianças, o seu sentido da vida a sua disponibilidade para lutar por aqueles que sofrem. Este evento surge associado à criação dum Banco Nacional de Sangue do Cordão Umbilical, uma lacuna importante do SNS, que vem dar resposta ao tratamento de doenças graves sobretudo das crianças e em simultâneo colocar-nos, nesta área, em pé de igualdade com os países mais evoluídos. Num momento de alguma perturbação social em que o egoísmo, o individualismo, a indiferença pelo sofrimento alheio e as desigualdades gritantes prevalecem, em que parece que a nossa vida apenas se rege por números estatísticos, as crianças de todo o país gritaram: estamos aqui, estamos presentes, queremos colaborar na divulgação deste projecto. Bone Marrow Transplant Service Portuguese Institute of Oncology - Porto Bone Marrow: the Factory of Life It is with great pleasure and honour that I participate in this remarkable initiative from Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, which comes consequent of two major characteristics of society namely the capacity to give and the mobilization of our great gift, the children. In the present social context, nothing is more pressing than stimulate children and young generation interest, for this big issue that is donation. The request made to the children from school from all over the country to express on panels their feeling about the issue “Bone Marrow: The Factory of life” showed in a touching way the purity of children feelings, their meaning of life and their willingness to fight for those who suffer. This event comes associated with launch of a national umbilical cord blood bank, an important gap in the NHS, which will give an answer to the treatment of severe illnesses mainly in children, and simultaneously will put us, in this field, up to the same standards as other developed countries. In this moment of some social perturbation in which selfishness, individuality, indifference to other's suffering, shocking social disparities remain, looking like our lives are only controlled by statistics, children from all over the country screamed - we are here, we are present, we want to cooperate in this project divulgation. Sociedade Portuguesa de Transplantação A transplantação de órgãos e tecidos é hoje em dia uma realidade em progresso permanente e graças a ela é possível salvar pessoas para a vida ou, no mínimo, para uma nova vida. Ao mesmo tempo, numa sociedade virada para o ter, mais que para o ser, a doação de células e tecidos é um acto sublime de generosidade. Quando morremos, os nossos órgãos de nada valem. Porque não doa-los e através deles continuarmos a "viver" noutro alguém? Se a doação em vida de células e tecidos é ainda uma forma de generosidade maior, é bom saber que ultrapassamos o ter, para poder ser mais, noutra pessoa. Deixamos neste caso de ser apenas nós. No novo organismo a quem nos damos, nem sempre somos aceites apesar do condicionamento que tentamos criar através dos tratamentos. Que isso não nos leve a sentir frustrados ou nos inunde de tristeza. Damos sem nada esperar. Todos na vida deveríamos lutar pela tolerância. Contudo, esta não é fácil acontecer. Também na área do transplante a grande luta é encontrarmos os mecanismos de tolerância de modo a que o novo ser a que nos damos, seja aceite sem necessidade de introduzirmos novos factores. A doação sem nada pedir, é sem dúvida o sinal de uma sociedade mais humana e mais rica. Ao ver o excelente trabalho feito por jovens alunos das escolas de vários pontos do país sobre transplante de medula, fico com a certeza que é possível mobilizar uma sociedade "adormecida" para causas nobres. Mais uma vez digo, que a doação de células ou órgãos é um acto sublime de generosidade. Na verdade, o que doamos, não nos fazendo falta, vai permitir uma nova vida. 9. Portuguese Society for Transplantation Organ and tissue transplan- tation is nowadays a reality in permanent progress and thanks to it is possible to save people to life or at least to a new life. At the same time, in a society turned to having, rather than being, donation of cells and tissues is a sublime act of generosity. When we die, our organs have no value. Why not donate them and trough them continue “to live” in another human being? If cells and tissues donation during life is a bigger way of generosity, it is good to know that we got over having, to be more, in someone else. We stop being just ourselves in this case. In the new organism to which we give ourselves, we are not always accepted regardless of the conditioning we try to create through treatments. But this shouldn't let us down, frustrated or flooded by sadness. We give without expecting anything. We all should fight for tolerance. Even though, it doesn't come easily. Also in the transplantation field the big fight is to find mechanisms for tolerance so that what we give to others is accepted without the need of introducing new factors. Donation without asking for nothing is with no doubt a sign of a more human and stronger society. Looking at the excellent work done by young students from schools all over the country on the theme of bone marrow transplantation I'm sure that it is possible to mobilize a “sleeping” society for such noble causes. Once again I say that cell and organ donation is a

B-Simple no Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte A luta contra a leucemia tem tido uma importância crescente ao longo dos últimos anos, tanto por parte de entidades públicas, como privadas. O tema Transplante de medula óssea relembra a sua importância no tratamento de doenças oncológicas, nomeadamente da Leucemia. A sua doação é de extrema importância para as pessoas que estão à espera duma oportunidade de cura. Por uma questão de responsabilidade social, é necessário agir em solidariedade para com estas pessoas, seja através da participação em projectos de divulgação, ou através da doação de medula. O sucesso obtido no concurso Painéis de Azulejos pelo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, na sua luta contra a leucemia, sensibilizou-me pelos resultados obtidos. Os painéis apresentam imagens de uma beleza profunda, que expressam a forma como os autores sentiram esta causa. A B-Simple, não indiferente a estas questões sociais e, como parceira tecnológica de longa data do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte, tem muito gosto em se associar a este tipo de acções. B-Simple at North Histocompatibility Center In recent years the fight against leukaemia has had growing relevance amongst public and private institutions. The issue of bone marrow transplantation reminds us of it s importance in the treatment of oncological disorders, especially leukaemia. Its donation is of extreme significance for the people who are awaiting a chance to be treated. As a matter of social responsibility, it is necessary to show solidarity with these people, by either participating in awareness projects or by giving bone marrow. The results of this successful tile panel competition, launched by CHN in the fight against leukaemia, have moved me. The panels show images of great beauty, which express the way the authors experienced this cause. B-Simple is not indifferent to social questions and as long time technological partner of CHN has great pleasure in being associated with this type of activity. Registo Britânico de Medula Óssea Esta é uma colecção impressionante e comovedora de quadros criados por crianças em idade escolar, entre os 10 e os 18 anos e que tem como objectivo consciencializar para o gesto da dádiva altruísta. Esta colecção foi criada à volta de assuntos que envolvem a doação e transplante de medula óssea, mas mais importante ainda, encoraja as pessoas a tornarem-se dadores para doentes que necessitam de um transplante mas que, infelizmente não têm um dador compatível na sua família. Este tópico atraiu a imaginação de muitas crianças em todo o Portugal, incluindo algumas de áreas rurais distantes, desde o litoral até à fronteira incluindo ilhas dos arquipélagos da Madeira e Açores. Esta exposição que foi preparada pelos alunos, professores e outros educadores e pessoal clínico envolvido no campo da dádiva e transplante de células e órgãos, irá agora ser apresentada em várias partes do país com o objectivo de promover debates acerca destes temas e, com um pouco de sorte como resultado, mais pessoas considerarão a possibilidade de se tornar dadores de medula óssea. Esta é uma excelente iniciativa. Também tem um significado especial que estes quadros tenham sido criados por crianças em idade escolar e jovens adultos uma vez que é nestas camadas jovens que as ideias e valores maravilhosos de altruísmo e generosidade devem ser reforçados de forma a que quando estas crianças cresçam elas não estejam apenas preparadas para doar mas que, mais importante ainda, entendam o significado do gesto generoso de ser tornarem dadores e desta forma possam salvar a vida de outra pessoa. British Bone Marrow Registry This is an impressive and moving collection of paintings created by school children from the age of 10 to18 and which is aimed at increasing awareness of the gesture of altruistic donation. This collection has been built around issues surrounding bone marrow donation and bone marrow transplantation but more importantly encourages people to become donors for patients in need of a transplant but who unfortunately do not have a compatible donor from within the family. This topic has captured the imagination of many children from all over Portugal including some from distant and rural areas, from the seaside to the border including Portuguese islands from Madeira and Azores archipelago. This exhibition which has been put together by the students, teachers and other educators and clinical staff involved in the field of cell and organ donation and transplantation, will now be presented in various parts of the country with the aim of promoting discussions around these subjects and hopefully as a result, more people will consider the possibility of becoming bone marrow donors. This is an excellent and creative initiative. It is also of particular significance that these painting have been produced by school children and young adults since it is at these early ages that the wonderful ideas and values of altruisms and generosity should be reinforced so that when these children grow up they will not only be prepared to donate but more importantly, will understand the significance of the generous gesture of becoming a donor and in this way save somebody else's life. Requer solidariedade do dador (no seio da família e/ou da população não aparentada). “Medula óssea: a fábrica da vida” é uma ferramenta essencial para ensinar solidariedade à geração jovem. É inteligente, divertida, informativa e já demonstrou a sua eficácia. Não só foi criado um maravilhoso CD interactivo, graças à Dr.ª Helena Alves do Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte no Porto, como também agora as crianças pintaram azulejos que reflectem a sua solidariedade, alegria e entusiasmo em ajudar o Mundo. Estes azulejos da vida, pintados por crianças saudáveis para ajudar os menos afortunados, ajudarão a convencer toda a gente, crianças e adultos de que um dador de medula óssea é também um dador de vida. Jean Dausset Laboratory The Azulejo of Life Transplantation of hemato- poietic cells is the cure of many diseases including leukaemia, hemoglobinopathies and immuno deficiencies. It requires solidarity from the donor (within the family and/or the unrelated population). "Bone marrow: the factory of life" is an essential media tool to teach solidarity to the young generation. It is smart, funny, informative and has already demonstrated its efficacy. Not only there is a marvellous interactive CD, thanks to Dr. Helena Alves from the North Histocompatibility Center in Porto, but now the young children have painted glazed tile panels that reflect their solidarity, joy and enthusiasm to help the world. These "azulejos" of life painted by healthy children to help the less fortunate ones will help convince everyone, children and adults that a donor of bone marrow is also a Donor of Life. Autoridade para os Serviços de Sangue e Transplantação Um programa educacional para a doação de precursores de células do sangue, Banco de Sangue do Cordão Umbilical e Registo de Células de Adulto Melhor do que publicidade paga, algumas iniciativas para mobilizar estudantes dentro da escola, são potencialmente mais significativas e eficientes. Neste livro, um número de maravilhosos e impressionantes painéis de azulejos são o resultado do trabalho de estudantes de diferentes idades depois de lhes ter sido explicado o significado dos precursores das células do sangue para o tratamento de alguns pacientes. A criatividade e generosidade são tão comuns entre os jovens, que o resultado não é completamente surpreendente. Dificilmente se poderia esperar, no entanto, que este aparentemente modesto compromisso, pudesse resultar em tão maravilhosa colecção de arte. Estou certo que estes jovens artistas foram profundamente tocados pela mensagem de solidariedade que lhes foi veiculada, como a necessidade de células do sangue e de sangue do cordão umbilical congelado para tratar doentes. Authority to Blood Services and Transplantation An educational program for donation of blood cell precursors Umbilical cord blood bank and adult cells registry Better than paid advertising, some initiatives mobilizing students within the school are potentially more meaningful and efficient. In this book a number of beautiful amazing tiles panels are the result of the work of students of different ages after the meaning of blood cell precursors for the treatment of a number of patients was explained to them. Creativeness and generosity are so common among young people, which is not at all surprising. You could hardly expect, however, that this apparently modest commitment could result in such a beautiful collection of art. Those young artists I'm sure they have been deeply touched by the message of solidarity conveyed to them as the need for samples of blood and frozen umbilical cords to treat patients. An enormous goal as the result of such a small effort: keeping frozen cells and registering a large number of voluntary potential donors. Their paintings are beautiful. People that had the idea and gave their collaboration for this work of the students deserve our gratitude for such an important achievement.   • 34. 14. Associação Portuguesa de Leucemias e Linfomas A medula óssea é, sem dúvida, a Fábrica da Vida. O concurso, lançado pelo Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte (CHN) foi, é e será, pelo retorno inigualável, um projecto brilhante e audaz de passar informação aos mais novos. Para poderem participar na "competição" os alunos de vários ciclos tiveram de pesquisar e seleccionar informação sobre a medula óssea: - O que é? - Para que serve? - Quem pode salvar? - Quem pode ser dador? - Que doenças pode curar? Tiveram de recolher informação para formarem a sua opinião. Desta forma, os mitos existentes sobre a transplantação e dádiva vão-se desvanecendo. O estigma associado à dor e à cirurgia (entre outros), por parte do dador estão a ser quebrados nas gerações mais novas, levando-os a falar com os pais sobre as suas descobertas e sobre o trabalho realizado para o concurso. As camadas mais novas da sociedade estão a alicerçar um futuro altruísta, no qual a sociedade informada não terá medo de ser dadora. Portuguese Association to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Without a doubt, bone marrow is “The Factory of Life”. The contest created by the Centro de Histocompatibilidade do Norte (CHN) was, is and will be a brilliant and clever way to teach children and it will have an unmatchable return. To be able to participate in the "competition", students of various ages had to search for and select information about bone marrow: - What is it? - Why is bone marrow needed? - Who can be saved? - Who can be a donor? - What diseases can it heal? They had to search for information to create their opinion. In this way, myths about transplantation and donation are being dissipated. The stigma associated with pain and surgery (amongst others), suffered by the donor, are being broken down in the younger people. This contest has promoted discussion with their parents about their discoveries and the work they have done to participate. The younger generations of society are laying the foundation for an altruist future, where an informed society will not be afraid to be donors.   • 35. 15. Europdonor - BMWD É um prazer apoiar a iniciativa da Helena Alves de recrutar crianças para fortalecer a nossa luta para curar a leucemia. Actualmente a nível mundial dois em cada três doentes com leucemia, que anseiam por uma cura, não são submetidos a um transplante de células estaminais potencialmente curativo, devido à ignorância acerca do procedimento e/ou uma falta de dadores de células estaminais ou de uma unidade de sangue de cordão adequada. A iniciativa da Dra Helena Alves de envolver crianças em idade escolar e os seus professores para divulgar as possibilidades terapêuticas do transplante de células estaminais hematopoiéticas e a necessidade urgente de recrutar mais dadores e unidades de sangue de cordão congeladas não deve ser apenas aplaudida, como também activamente apoiada.
