Examples Of Dystopian Literature
Dystopian literature explores social, political and economic structures by showing us, through a
nightmare world, the negative characteristics using exaggerated critiques on real world issues. The
Dystopian literature of the 21st century is the complete opposite of the Utopia of the 21st century.
While a Utopiais an imagined state of things in which everything is perfect, while a dystopiais an
imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or
environmentally degraded one. According to John Adams; The roots of the word dystopia dys
and topia are from the Ancient Greek for bad and place, and so we use the term to describe an
unfavorable society in which to live. Dystopia is not a synonym for post apocalyptic ; it also is not
a synonym... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Divergent includes all aspects of a dystopian novel. Some of these are the illusion of a utopia,
constant surveillance, and fear of the outside world. According to Kyle Jannak Huang; In the
novel Divergent, the society is split into five different factions. At first, it seems like the five
factions can all live together peacefully in a perfect society. Each faction has a role in society.
Eventually, factions disagree and they go to war, showing that the society is not really a perfect
one. [4] Demonstrating the characteristic of the unrealistic utopia that is shown to the reader in the
first chapters.
Hunger Games is another dystopian novel in which we see the abuse of power the government has
over its people. Here we see how the government, the Capitol, is a completely totalitarian one. It
portrays the way that ordinary people are being dehumanized in this made up world. This
dehumanization is being caused by the dictatorship led by President Snow. In that dictatorship we
can find the worship of a figurehead, which is yet another characteristic of dystopian

The Blind Side Analysis
The Blind Side, written and directed by John Less Hancock, is a nonfiction sports film based on
Michael Oher, who is an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens. In this biographical film,
Oher was a homeless African American teenager and had little formal education. He grew up in
the Memphis s projects and his mother was a drug addict while his father was never in his life.
Due to Oher s family circumstances, he was in and out of foster homes. One day, Leigh Anne
Tuohy and her husband Sean Tuohydecided to adopt Oher. The Tuohy s provided Oher with a
home, a tutor to improve his grades, and invested in his football career. Oher signed on with the
University of Mississippi and later got drafted as an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens of
National Football League(NFL) in 2009.
The Blind Side presents socialization through game stage, poverty, role transitions, id, ego,
superego, and moral reasoning. The game stage is when someone is learning how to play on teams
with other people and start taking the roles of others (Haar, 2017). In the movie, Michael Oher
started learning how to play with his teammates on the football field. He was told to protect his
teammates from the other team, and he did that impressively. For example, in one of the scenes he
protected his teammates on the field by taking another player on the other team home, meaning he
blocked him all the way to other side of the field. Another form of socialization shown in this movie
was poverty.

Treasure Coast Food Bank Case Study
The Salvation Army in Red Bank New Jersey is just one of many locations for the organization.
Since the Salvation Army is an international charity that helps people, not only across the United
States but in many countries as well, it was hard to find an organization that was only in one
other state that someone could compare it to because of its magnitude. Instead, this paper will
focus on an organization that was on the same level as the Salvation Army s as well as similar to
its cause. Feeding America is a national charity that helps to feed the hungry across the nation.
However, this paper will focus on one of its locations in Fort Pierce, Florida, called Treasure
Coast Food Bank. Both of these organizations offer similar aide to those in need and have the
same goals of feeding America s hungry. This article will compare and contrast the entirety of the
organizations, as well as the amount of people in need in the chosen areas of focus, their financial
records, and their advertising strategies. The Salvation Army... Show more content on

Financial statistics of the overall organizations will help to compare the statistics of the two
specific locations this paper focuses on. According to the Forbes largest U.s Charities list,
previously mentioned, The Salvation Army s overall fundraising is 90% effective whereas
Feeding America s fundraising is reported to be 99% effective. ( The 50 Largest U.S. Charities ,
n.d.) A lot of these statistics show that Feeding America has higher percentages in most areas
compared to the Salvation Army. This is because, again looking at 2014, The Salvation Army
received $344 million from the government because they are a religious organization. ( The 50
Largest U.S. Charities: Salvation Army, n.d.) This also explains why Feeding America has 99%
donor dependency rate where the Salvation Army only has a 70% rate. ( The 50 Largest U.S.

The Causes Of Air Pollution In Beijing, China
Beijing, China has a coal mining history of nearly 800 and some odd years. This has been a major
air pollutant and the main reason for it is because its economy has grown substantially in the last 30
years. Worldwide, there are twenty cities with the highest, worst air pollution, sixteen of those cities
are within China alone. The main causes of Beijing s air pollutioncan be pointed to several factors.
Large economical growth, an increase in vehicles on the roads, growth in population, and
manufacturing. China has also experienced major economic growth with a large rise in Gross
Domestic Product. This increase can be connected with pollution. Vehicles are just one contributor
to pollution which we will discuss later in this paper. The population growth in Beijing contributes
to a big portion of its pollution. The population has risen from 11 million to 16 million in just 7
years, and has nearly doubled over the past century. Factories that utilize coal burning contribute to
the smogcurrently present in Beijing. Many of these factories depend on outdated and inefficient
technology which emits air pollutants. Beijing is a victim of its own topography since it s
surrounded by mountains which traps pollution within the city. Air quality worsens in the spring
and summer seasons when the humidity and temperature levels increase. Air pollution has been so
drastic to the point that the city often engulfs in smog making it near zero visibility which in turn
causing road

Essay Judith and Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes
I had never heard of the artist Artemisia Gentileschi before this introductory Art course. Of all the
paintings and sculptures found within the book, it was her work that stood out and spoke to me.
Judith and Maidservant with the head of Holofernes is a particularly rich oil painting by the
Italian Gentileschi, painted circa 1625 Europe. Her large canvas measures 72 and 1/2 inches by 55
and 3/4 inches and began as a biblical story telling inspiration come to life within the oil. Located at
the Detroit Institute of Arts, the paintingwas a gift to the institute from Art collector Mr. Leslie H.
Green in 1952. Artemisia was the daughter of a painter (and caravaggioinfluenced) Orazio
Gentileschi, she was also the wife of little known artist... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Artemisia continued an affair with Agostino under the promise of marriage, when the marriage
never happened, her father brought charges against Tassi and a trial ensued, to which Artemisia was
tortured during a gynecological examination for the trial. Again life imitating art and a testament
toward the women depicted in her paintings. Miss Gentileschi married a man named Pierantonio
Stiattesi and they moved to Florence. As mentioned, Artemisia had 5 children, however only her
daughter Prudentia survived into adulthood. After her mother s death in 1656, Prudentia
disappeared from history.
I believe, as do others, Judith and the Maidservant with the head of Holofernes is perhaps homage
to her rape and subsequent treatment during her adolescent years. Her painting`s inspiration also
plays tribute to the biblical story of Judith, who sleeps with the King Holofernes and than
decapitates the drunk King in his sleep. Both Judith and the maidservant are now dominate in the
painting over the dead male, they are quiet, unobtrusive and tense. A single candle burns within
the dark room creating stark contrast between light and dark. The artist`s great skill can be seen
in the bright highlighted details of Judith s hand and in the folds of clothing of the two. Depth and
dark core detail can also be seen in the dark and reflective shadow areas within the room. Judith s
hand covers the candlelight as she peers at the outside world, perhaps in an attempt to help in

The Character Of Billy s The Landlady
The Landlady
Even though the gruesome, ghastly and demonic story known as The Landlady ends in a
disturbing way, it portrays many characteristics about the protagonist, Billy. There are numerous
ways to characterize Billy, a 17 year old kid on his first business trip in the strange city of Bath,
England. Billy begins his journey to a hotel known as the Bell and Dragon but stumbles to a halt
when he sees a seemingly cozy bed and breakfast that catches his eye. For a few pages everything
seems great; unfortunately for Billy, he has some flaws which ultimately lead to his shocking death
at the hands of a demented landlady. These are curiosity, a tendency to miss important clues, and
gullibility.
The gullible nature of Billy Weaver is quite interesting as he does not show any sign of stupidity,
but his gullible state got the best of him. There are numerous reasons to portray the nature of Billy
as abnormal. The first sign shown by Billy is when he figures out the cost of staying at the Bed and
Breakfast for a night. In the passage, it states Five and sixpence a night, including breakfast (Dahl
2). He subsequently says it was fantastically cheap (Dahl 2). but he never thought of the
consequences he would face or think why it was so cheap, as many places would charge twice as
much. This shows his gullible state of mind at the extremes. Billy Weaver finally asks about how
this cheap of a place did not get lots of customers and she answered: I m inclined to be

Transcontinental Railroad Railroads
Railroads were a huge step in innovations for the United States. The transcontinental Railroad was
Built from 1863 to 1869. Taking over six years, the railroad stretched almost 2,000 miles,
connecting the Mississippi rivers to the Pacific Coast in San Francisco. Although the
transcontinental railroad was one of the biggest things to happen in the railroad industry, there was
many other railroads that caused significance. Through the 1850 s and 1860 s alone over 50,000
miles of railroad were built throughout the United States. And with all these railroads being built
they were sure to leave impact on many other industries. One of the most important changes that the
railroads caused was the increase of convenience
For citizens all throughout the United States. By traveling via train passengers could reach their
destination in 90% of the time compared to the travel methods before. This also caused a large
increase in Western Settlement. Now, families did not have to worry about the harsh and long
travel they would have had to make to go West just a few years before. People did not have to
worry about weather, supply shortage, disease, and more, as railroad travel helped all of those
situations. However, every good thing has a bad side, and it is important to note that the increase of
Western Settlement forced more Indians out of their land, which began to cause violence between
white men and Indians. The railroads also affected agriculture throughout the

Examples Of Conflict In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
When perusing through the themes of A Good Man is Hard to Find, one of the most prominent and
evident was conflict. Although there are themes of stereotyping and isolation, in a sense, conflict is
what affects the story the greatest overall. Throughout this short story, and throughout the other
stories used to exhibit the strength of the role of conflict, the events that occur all build up to the
final moments where the action occurs. Othello, one of the supporting works, portrays conflict as
an internal and external affair, and also has a slow build up to the final conflict. The reasons and
events that lead to these conflicts are far and few between, but show how conflict is conflict, no
matter what causes it. Fighting and disagreements... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before attempting to dissect where in literature and life conflict resides, the meaning behind it and
what it entails must first be understood. Conflict can be defined as a serious disagreement or
argument, typically a protracted one. In the form of a verb, it can also be defined as to be
incompatible or at variance with; to clash. Conflict, although it is mostly attributed with physical
violence, can come in many forms. It can be viewed as internal, external, and moral. External
conflict, or physical conflict, is the most prominent form recognized and seemingly occurs most
often. External conflict can be shown through war, physical altercations, violent crimes; the list
goes on. This type of conflict is exhibited within the short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find. The
next branch of conflict is internal conflict, which a psychological struggle within the mind. Internal
conflict is an altercation between the mind and the input that is being rejected, and can leave the
individual feeling defeated and at odds with themselves. At its simplest terms, it is an internal
struggle. Examples of these could be emotional problems, such as fear of intimacy or abandonment,
or trying to resist the allure of a

Social Effects Of Advertising In Advertising
When going shopping, watching the television or looking in magazines, young girls are among the
most targeted, being affected and vulnerable to the social influences of marketing and
advertisements. Many advertisements of clothing have depicted the female form in a sexually
provocative manner. Sexualisation is when a person s value comes only from his or her sexual
appeal or behaviour, to the exclusion of other characteristics. Furthermore, sexual objectificationis
when the female body is seen as an object of male desire, which leads to a woman s worth being
her body s appearance and sexual function. Evidence from social and psychological studies is
suggesting that girls are exposed from an early age to sexualising content. On average, one third of
clothingitems available to young girls in stores have sexualised characteristics containing either
tight fitting and skin tight, low cut, or see through parts. Such clothing emphasises sexual body
parts such as the chest, bum, or legs. All of which are products that are designed and marketed
for young girls below the age of fourteen. Many garments also feature sex related pictures or
writing such as Future WAG, or short skirts and dresses, along with high heeled shoes which are
not age appropriate for young children. Some [high heeled] shoes I have seen on sale look more
suited to a lap dancing club than the feet of a young girl. Even lingerie, which is typically for
adults, is being designed for girls onwards of the age of

Ancient Cosmology And The Natural Laws Of The Universe
It has been embedded in Chinese psyche that nature is a powerful force which nurtures life and
human beings but could also be unpredictable, uncontrollable and terribly devastating. Always
bearing in mind the incredible power of nature, early Chinese noticed the perpetual transformation
and interchange between all elements in the universe in order to inhibit, to support, to impact and
to impulse each other s development and expansion. Therefore, it is a common belief among most
Chinese that harmony is the essence of life and all living beings coordinate under the natural laws
of the universe. This ancient cosmology leads us to the concept of yin and yang, a famous Chinese
philosophyexplaining the balance of all elements in the universe.... Show more content on

Yin yang, in its simplest concept, is derived from peasant s daily life and was only meant to explain
natural phenomena: the rise and set of the sun, an essential force controlling Chinese s farming,
trading and production. The yang symbol implies the sunlight during the day when peasants start
their day at the fields while yin illustrates a lack of sunlight at night when farmers return home to
rest. This sun based daily pattern leads to further implication which associates yang with movement
and activity (dong) and yin, on the other hand, with rest and passivity (jing). There is not much
historical evidence suggesting other possible original meanings of yin and yang. However, no
matter how and when the primitive concept of yin yang was formed, it has become profoundly
influential in Chinese and other East Asian culture.
At the beginning, yin and yang existed as two independent and unconnected concepts. Later then,
we can see these two characters be written together for the first time in a verse from Shijing
(Book of Songs), one of Zhou Dynasty s famous classic: Viewing the scenery at a hill, looking for
yinyang . Yin and yang in this implication are interpreted as the shady and sunny sides of a hill, but
meanwhile emphasizes the general impact of the sun on that hill. Nowadays, yin and yang can be
used to represent many contrasting yet coordinating aspects of different objects. Yang can be

I had a hard time finding it but I stumbled across a web site that had frequently asked questions
about hybrid cars and that was one of them. I found out that hybrid battery packs are designed to
last for the lifetime of the car, somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles and probably aa
whole lot longer. Hybrids use NiMH batteries, not the environmentally problematic rechargeable
nickel cadmium. Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are benign. They can be fully recycled, says
Ron Cogan, editor of the green car journal. Toyota and Honda say that they will recycle dead
batteries and that disposal will pose no toxic hazards. Plus Toyota puts a phone number on each
battery, and they will pay a $200 dollar bounty for each battery to help ensure that it is properly
recycled(Hybrid). I was really relives to find this out. As for hybrids not being very safe I didn t

Lastly, the four children (Lucy, Edmund, Peter and Suzan) are human beings. They represent four
different kinds of people who have different encounters with God. For Peter, he is the skeptical
type of Christian. One who is doubtful by how God can use him to help build God s kingdom, yet
at times he forgets that it is only Christ who can defeat evil and not by his strength alone. Edmund
is the type of Christian who has sinned and fallen short many times along the road before choosing
to love and follow Christ. While Suzan is the type of Christian who has consistently doubted
whether or not Christ, even really exists before fully trusting God with the things that don t seem to
make sense. Lastly, Lucy represents the Christians who just love, follow and dedicate their lives to
Christ without hesitation and without doubt. Lucy s childlikeness showcases how Christians
should love and trust Christ with our lives.
Since the four children can be seen as symbolisms of human beings, their relationship with Aslan
shows a lot about the grace, mercy and overall character of God. One of the main examples
where this is seen is the grace that Aslan showed to Edmund who was a traitor. Despite Edmunds
choice to prioritize Turkish delight over his family and his right as one of the king of Narnia,
Aslan still accepted Edmund into his army and not only that Edmund still inherited the kingdom of

At Asda the finance department is responsible for paying suppliers on time and ensuring that
Asda receives prompt payment of goods that is due to them. Asda vehicles collect goods from the
supplier and deliver to the relevant distribution centre and this saves Asda the time and money for

Summary Of Magical Realism In A Very Old Man With Enormous...
The phrase magical realism in the context of literature was first coined by the Cuban novelist
Alejo Carpentier to describe the combination of the fantastic and everyday occurrences in Latin
American fiction. Over time, the term has been vastly modified by writers from a plethora of
backgrounds. Nevertheless, magical realism still refers to the tendency to mix the magical and
terrestrial in a context of realistic narration, as seen in the works of Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez.
Born in Columbia, Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez introduces readers to magical realism through one of
his short stories A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by combining earthly and fantastic
elements to create an image of an ordinary society with mythical creatures. In his work, Gabriel
GarcГa MГЎrquez effectively illustrates the coexistence of cruelty and moralityin society through
the strategic utilization of magical realism. Traditionally, many myths and legends portray angels as
elegant, beautiful creatures, but in MГЎrquez s short storythe angel is portrayed as a disease
infected ragpicker (MГЎrquez 1). The story begins when Pelayo and Elisenda, MГЎrquez s main
characters, discover an old man lying in their courtyard. They are unsure of his origins, but know
that he has enormous wings and speak in an incomprehensible dialect (MГЎrquez 1). Despite these
uncertainties, they decide to house the questionable man in their chicken coop and utilize him to
their own interests when they discover that he is

Essay on A Mexican Farmer Worker in USA
A Mexican Farmer Worker in USA
The first immigrant I interviewed will be referred to as Jess . Jess is from Guanajuato which is in
southern Mexico. Jess, his five brothers and sisters, and his parents were farmers. They grew corn
as their main crop. Jess s family lived in a three bedroom brick house in Mexico. Their house
surprisingly had water and electricity. He only made 100 pesos a day ($10.00 U.S.). According
to Jess, this was not enough money to get by on his own. He said that the average person in
Mexico needs at least 150 pesos per day to live on their own and someone raising a family needs
much more than this. This is why in 1985, at the age of 18, he came to Arizona to find a better job

worked at the golf course for 17 years now. He started out as a grounds keeper making minimum
wage and now he makes $31,000 per year as an assistant superintendent. According to
Transnational Villagers, the median income (total household income) for Non Dominican
Hispanics in 1999 was $26,982. Jess has never been on welfare. He sends money back to his
parents every month but he doesn t want to go back to Mexico, though he says that he does miss
his family and friends back in Mexico and he also misses farming. When he was asked what he
thought was the biggest difference between Phoenix and Mexico, he said that he had come from
a small town in Mexico and that Phoenix was such a big city compared to his home town. Jess
claims that he has not experienced any discrimination since he s been in Phoenix. He says
people have been good to him. Jess says that another difference between Phoenix and Mexico is the
cost of living. He says that It s (the cost of living) becoming very expensive now...I would never be

Erik Erikson s Explanation Of Psychosocial Development
Erik Erikson s explanation of psychosocial development is one of the best known theories of
personality in psychology. The term psychosocial development is the pattern of change in
emotions, personality and social relationship ( A Child s World 10). Erikson believed that the
achievements and failures of earlier stages influence later stages, whereas later stages change and
transform earlier ones. His theory shows the impact on social relationships throughout one s entire
life. Each individual goes through eight developmental stages, and each stage is characterized by a
different crisis in personality a major psychosocial theme that is above all important at that time but
will remain an issue to some degree throughout the rest of life ( A Child s World). To Erikson, the
sequence of the stages are set by nature. It is within the set limits that nurture works its ways (
Erikson s Stages of Development ). Developmental scientists study three major domains, or aspects,
of the self: physical, cognitive, and psychosocial. Growth of the body and brain, sensory capacities,
motor skills, and health are parts of physical development. Learning, attention, memory, language,
thinking, reasoning, and creativity make up cognitive development. Emotions, personality, and
social relationships are aspects of psychosocial development ( Experience Human Development ).
Each aspect of development affects the others. For example, during puberty, dramatic physical and
hormonal changes

The Calling Of St. Matthew Essay
In the early 1620 s, Gian Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned to create a sculpture inspired by a
passage in Ovid s Metamorphosis. It is said that Apollo insults Cupid, who in return shoots him
with an arrow of gold. Apollo is overcome with immense desires of love towards Daphne, but to his
dismay she is hit with a dull arrow made of lead, which causes her to abhor such feelings of love.
Apollochases her relentlessly until she cries out in prayer to her father, the river god. Her father
grants her wish and turns her into a Laurel tree right before Apollo is able to grab her. The myth
of Apollo and Daphne is one of tragedy because of the hopeless chase that defines Apollo s fate.

Matthew
San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome
Located in the Contarelli Chapel, this oil on canvas is one of three by Caravaggio that depict an
event in Matthew s life. In the gospel of Mark, the story of Jesus calling Levi (who later becomes
Matthew) is short and simple, but Caravaggio s interpretation contains much richer detail.
In The Calling of St. Matthew, the event seems to take place behind a sketchy tavern where tax
collectors greedily count money they have extorted from the community. Three of the tax collectors
are painted in fancy clothing with weapons, while an older Matthew can be spotted with another
older man peeking over his shoulder. Christ shows up on the right of the painting with Saint Peter
and points in Matthew s direction. Peter in disbelief can be seen pointing at himself wondering if
Jesus is referring to him.
If one looks closely, Jesus hand is a mirrored image of Adam s hand from Michelangelo s The
creation of Adam on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Adam is known as the one who causes the fall of
humankind, while Christ is the one who redeems mankind. Jesus arm is extended behind Saint
Peter, which can be seen as a reminder that the call of Christ is mediated through the church. It is
also interesting that light, similar to a spotlight, is shining right over Jesus head and onto St.
Matthew. It is also shining directly on the window, which contains the symbol of a

Literary Analysis Of The Widow s Lamnt In Springtime
William Carlos Williams was from Rutherford, New Jersey, born in 1883. By trade, he was both
a doctor and writer. Williams published poetry, novels, and essays in small magazines. Williams
started as an imagist movement poet, which emphasized simplicity, clarity of expression, and
precision through the use of exacting visual images (poets.org). He later began to write more about
the life of everyday people. His poem, The Widow s Lament in Springtime follows this writing
style.
The poem The Widow s Lament in Springtime is a poem about a women who has lost her
husband of thirty five years. Williams writes in the voice of a grieving woman instead of in his
own voice. Now that her husband has died, the widow cannot find joy in her yard that she used to
love. The widow may even be considering suicide. Williams, writing in free verse, writes a
metaphor comparing the grief of a widow to her blooming yard in the springtime setting a tone of
great sadness for the widow.
The title itself gives us important clues about this poem. From the beginning before even
reading the first line of the poem, we know that it will be a sad story. The widow being someone
who has experienced a loss and lament is a word used for passionate grief and sorrow.
Springtime is a time of growth and rebirth, the affirming of new life. Williams title may lead us
to believe that the widow is in the early stages of life without her husband and the early stages of
grief. This may be her first spring without her husband. She is exploring the overwhelming
feelings of grief over losing her husband, comparing her grief to the new life or blooming of her
yard. The widow begins by telling us Sorrow is my own yard (Reed). She, the widow is
comparing the sorrow and grief that she feels with her yard. She takes ownership of her pain in
the phrase my own . Springtime is usually a time of renewal and growth, but for the widow it is a
time of sorrow and pain, deep sadness because her husband is not there with her this year. The
new growth of her yard just closes round me this year . Something that is closing around you may
make you feel trapped, or uncomfortable. This year her yard brings her feeling of pain. The widow s

The Changing Nature of Crime and Law Enforcement
Law enforcement agencies nationwide must constantly adapt to the changing nature of crime and
the ways criminals must be prosecuted. New dangers like terrorism, as well as old ones, such as
public corruption, threaten the public and force police agencies to acclimate themselves to this new
environment. President Clinton explained the need for the development of the federal and local
law enforcement agencies.
We have begun to find a way to reduce crime, forming community partnerships with local police
forces to catch criminals and prevent crime. This strategy, called community policing, is clearly
working. But we still have a long way to go before our streets are safe and our people are free from

White Collar crime entails illegal actions committed by upper class people and businesses. In the
past crimes like fraud, embezzlement, income tax evasion, and abuse of political and legal powers
were treated by authorities more than typical crimes.
Historically, most white collar criminals were simply fired or fined. Rarely were jail sentences
imposed let alone served. This leniency stemmed from the perception that a high status individual
implicated in criminal activity was sufficiently punished by the loss of their social stature and
partly from the fact that most white collar crimes are so called victimless offenses. Only recently
has this attitude begun to change. White collar crime has become an increasing problem in the
latter part of the twentieth century. Authorities in the U.S., in particular, are dealing more severely
with such crimes. Identity theft has been a problem facing police departments recently. It is a
crime in which someone obtains and uses another person s personal information in a way that
involves fraud. In the United States and Canada, for example, many people have reported that
unauthorized people have taken money out of their bank. In 1998 Congress made identity theft a
federal offense to therefore create stricter penalties for these criminals. Police agencies all over the
country must constantly adjust to the shifting nature of crime and the ways criminals will be

The Rise And Fall Of Troy Maxon
The Rise and Fall of Troy Maxon: An Analysis of August Wilson s play Fences In Fences, August
Wilson, the playwright, provides a believable and powerful examination of the African American
experience in the late 1950 s. It provides an apt portrayal of the mentality of African American men
going into the civil rights movement, as well as a well developed account of the friction that occurs
between a father and a son, and a husband and wife in the face of conflict. According to Wilson, his
play provides Caucasians with a view into an African Americans life to find similarities to their own
(Kennedy and Gioia 1883). Not only did Wilson accomplish this, but also provided a representation
of interfamily relationships that occurs in many cultures. For instance, Katz maintains that the
father son relationship contains ... inherent seeds of conflict (Katz). The relationship between Cory
and Troy mirrors the conflict between many young men and their fathers as they attempt to create
their identity and independence while the fathers are still attempting to shape their future based on
their experiences, creating conflict that transcends differences in race and culture. Similarly, the
issue of infidelity in a marriage is another issue that is common in a multitude of cultures (Hartnett),
and addressed in this play through Bono s accusations toward Troy, and Troy s subsequent
admission to Rose that he had an affair resulting in a child. Wilson puts the most effort into

What Does The Green Light Symbolize In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald incorporates many different symbols into his novel, The Great Gatsby, to add
meaning and depth to the story. Even the most subdued symbols can hold a very important meaning
to the overall storyline. Three symbols that are subtle, yet important include: the green light, the
Valley of Ashes, and the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. Each of these symbols hold their own
meaning and significance to the story.
The first time the green light is introduced in the novel is also the first time Nick notices Gatsby.

which seem to be out of reach. His longing for Daisy is also a longing for the past. When Gatsby

Las Vegas Gamblers Nfl Team
Las Vegas Gamblers Financial Report I researched many sources to budget our nfl team, and
how much money we would receive from the state of nevada. So the research that was found
was from tennessee. We researched Tennessee s minor league baseball team, las vegas minor
league baseball team, and then Tennessee Titans NFL team. So we figured that the Las Vegas
minor league team gets about nine million dollars a year, then the tennessee minor league team
gets about eight million seventy five thousand a year, and the last one we researched was the
Tennessee Titans which they receive three hundred forty two million a year. So we set up ratios
to figure the cost of what our team received, this ratio is set up as X over 9 is equal to 342
millions over 8.75 million, then we multiplied 342 million and 9 million, then divided the 8.75
million to get us with 351, 771, 428. This number represent how much we would receive from
nevada. Then you add in the yearly budget the NFL gives each team which is about 226,400,000,
so the total funding our team would like to receive with both NFL and Nevada s funding each year
would be around 578,171,428.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Imperfection Of The Greek Parthenon
The Athenian Greeks at the height of their power built a temple called the Parthenon which was a
monument to their core values of perfectionism, humanism, and rationalism. It is important to
understand that the human eye has imperfections which deceive the mind, so one can understand
the unique steps that were taken to achieve the illusion of perfection to the human eye. The Greeks
loved perfection, and as seen in the Parthenon, the Greek architects purposely made the Parthenon
imperfect to account for the imperfections in the human eye. This was done so that when one
views the Parthenon with the naked eye, it appears to be perfectly symmetrical, straight, and
proportional. The entire Parthenon does not have a single right angle. An example of the
Greeks compensating for the imperfections of the human eye is seen in the base of the
Parthenon, which from a picture or in real life looks perfectly straight, but in reality it is actually
curved slightly upward. It is curved because the Greeks knew that if you have a perfectly flat
base for a building, it appears curved to the human eye. To account for that, the Greeks made it so
that the base was already curved. The Greeks also curved the columns of the Parthenon inward,
because if the columns were straight, it would appear to be curving outward. Again, the Greeks
knew about how the human eye deceives the mind, and decided that they must trick the eye to
please the mind. This was all done because the Greeks strived for

Within the pages of the well known epic poem are many extraordinary and warring narratives of
the Middle Ages. Beowulf is important because it is one of the most ancient European epics
written in the vernacular, or native tongue. The seemingly super natural heroes of this exciting and
famous writing have a great impact on the typical roles of their women. As declared through out
the many lines of the astonishing poem, the women have many purposes and serve a variety of
roles. Wealhtheow, Hygd, Hildeburh, Freawaru, and Grendel s Mother give examples of the

Wealhtheow and Hygd are both Queens. They both have influence in the Hall.
Peaceweaver is used in Old English Literature. The term is used to illustrate a woman who
marries someone from an enemy tribe in order to establishment tranquility between her family
and his. The marriage is a supporting understanding to expectantly end enmity between warring
tribes. Maintaining and preserving harmony is not just a role for women; it is their very
identity. However, peace was not always the consequence of such a marriage, and the peace
weaver without doubt had to tolerate a dual burden. The failing of the arranged marriage is
proven in the case of Hildeburh. She is a Dane who marries the enemy, King of the Jutes as the
peaceweaver. In the end, Hildeburh s marriage costs her a son, a brother and a husband all
unsuccessful, for peace is by no means achieved. Her story is sung by a scop during festivities,
Hildeburh had little cause to credit the jutes: son and brother, she lost them both on the battlefield.

According to Global Edge, the aerospace and defense (A D) industry is highly concentrated,

The Impact Of Freedom And The American Dream
Freedom and the American Dream are both something that Americans stand and strive for in the
United States. For many it is a major part of our lives, for some more than others. When the
American Dream is asked to be explained or defined a common response is that it is an
accomplishment of wealth and prosperity through hard work and success, especially those living in
the United States. When searched, the American Dream is described as the ideals of freedom,
equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American (American Dream,
Dictionary.com). This description plays a major role as these are the goals that were set to come
from the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Many fought for the right to be free especially when it came to
racial inequality in our country but many did not receive these benefits or opportunities of equality
as there were negative and positive effects that came directly from the Civil Rights Movement.
The first American slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia in
1619. Their job was to aid in the production of crops such as tobacco as the Virginians were
desperate for labor, to grow enough to stay alive... needed labor, to grow corn for subsistence, to
grow tobacco for export (Zinn 24,25). The slaves that were being brought to the Americas were seen
as builders of the economic foundations of the new nation and as time passed the ownership of
slaves dwindled but inequality and segregation grew to be more prevalent in the U.S ( Slavery in
America ). On January 1st, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation,
an executive order which freed slaves in the United States not within the Confederacy, under Union
Control. Two years later the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution which abolished
slavery but many Southern States managed to create unattainable prerequisites for blacks to live,
work or participate in society. With nearly one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclamation,
African Americans were still treated just as unequally. Oppression, race inspired violence,
segregation and an unequal world of disenfranchisement lingered across Southern States for African
Americans. The Jim Crow Laws

Decay And Its Effects On The Global Amount Of Carbon Decay
Decay All living things must decay to balance the global amount of carbon. Decay can take
many years to be completed. Some decay more rapidly than others. For instance, Robinia
Pseudoacacia, or Black Locust, has a slower decay rate than coniferous. These both also differ
from the decay of human bodies. There are also some less substantial things that can decay as well,
but are not needed for balance. All softwoods come from coniferous trees. They grow faster than
hardwoodtrees, and are easier to manufacture. This is because the trees grow fairly tall and straight
which makes it easier to cut long, straight planks. Because of the easy manufacturing, this type of
woodcomes very cheap. Most softwoodis used for indoor furniture, or decoration. Some types of
softwood trees are: pine, spruce, cedar, and redwood. These trees decay faster for the same
reason they are easily manufactured. Manufacturers put several layers of paint on some of the
trees. This is one factor that contributes in preventing decay. All it does though, is keep out the
fungus that causes decay (mr dt.com). The only agent of wood decay are fungi. Wood does
deteriorate from insects, UV rays, and marine animals, but this is not actually decay. There are
three types of decay; white, brown, and soft. You can tell the difference between them by looking
at the color of the wood as it decays. White looks bleached, brown is of course a brown color, but
soft can be either. In white rot the whitish color comes from

Positive Effects Of Attitude
Effects of Attitude
Distance, time, money, tiredness and several other things in life are just a question of one s attitude.
Context and situations decide the attitude.
If a person has to travel say 15 to 20 miles per day to his workplace, he will definitely be cribbing.
On the other hand, if the remuneration is going to be hefty he will not mind travelling the same
distance. The distance has not changed, but his attitude towards remuneration makes this passable.
One often complains that he does not have time for even the small things in life. Just an
introspection shall reveal that it is an excuse one gives to oneself. A personwho does not have time
for a courtesy call to a related person will definitely be able to squeeze in time to spend time with
his friend in spite of any tight schedule. After a whole day of work, spending hours at the gym
seem alright, but helping out your mother or spouse at home may seem a burden or vice versa. Or
else if a friend calls for an outing will freak out forgetting both the above. It is ... Show more content

On the contrary they do not mind giving generous Tips in fancy restaurants because of attitude.
Perceptions of Attitude are more important and can change during periods of Natural disasters.
During a recent flood havoc in a major city in India, the people s attitude was so positive that they
were able to render all assistance to those affected without any inhibitions of class, creed, rich, poor,
etc.
People may throw stones at your path. It is your attitude with which you face the hurdle, that will
lead to a wall or a bridge . Remember your attitude is the architect of your life.
Success requires more than talent. While talent and knowledge are essential, the key that unlocks
them both is your state of mind. Being positive makes you more dependable. When you are positive
you will find that you instinctively respect others, and are therefore more considerate.

Grinnell Symphony Orchestra Analysis
The Grinnell Symphony Orchestra s concert with cowboy singer Dave Stamey was billed as an
intriguing and thought provoking junction between the genres of classical and Western. The mix of
traditional cowboy music and orchestral arrangement had the potential to highlight the strengths of
the performers and genres; it was certainly interesting to hear songs typically performed solo being
played with a full orchestra, but a number of red flags popped out immediately and ended up
spoiling the experience. Poor planning and a failure to be conscious of cultural politics ultimately
left a bad taste in my mouth. Factors unrelated to this intersection of genres rehearsal timing,
audience demographics, and Dave Stamey s racist habits and mannerisms ended up highlighting
the negative instead. A number of years ago, I had the opportunity to play a concert with
Livingston Taylor (also known as Budget James Taylor ), providing an opportunity for a folk rock
singer songwriter to perform standards with a full jazzband something not entirely different from
the Stamey orchestra relationship. Much like the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra, we only had one
extended rehearsal with our guest after several months of rehearsing our charts; inevitably, there
were some kinks to iron out in tempo, mood, and overall consistency. Unlike the GSO s... Show

Any musical insight was obscured by the former problem, while the combination of the latter with
ignorance on the part of both Stamey and the audience resulted in acceptance of racist elements of
the performance. A singer songwriter s first ever performance with a large orchestral ensemble
should have been a musical step forward; in reality, it was a cultural step

  • 2. Examples Of Dystopian Literature Dystopian literature explores social, political and economic structures by showing us, through a nightmare world, the negative characteristics using exaggerated critiques on real world issues. The Dystopian literature of the 21st century is the complete opposite of the Utopia of the 21st century. While a Utopiais an imagined state of things in which everything is perfect, while a dystopiais an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. According to John Adams; The roots of the word dystopia dys and topia are from the Ancient Greek for bad and place, and so we use the term to describe an unfavorable society in which to live. Some of these are the illusion of a utopia, constant surveillance, and fear of the outside world. According to Kyle Jannak Huang; In the novel Divergent, the society is split into five different factions. At first, it seems like the five factions can all live together peacefully in a perfect society. Each faction has a role in society. Eventually, factions disagree and they go to war, showing that the society is not really a perfect one. [4] Demonstrating the characteristic of the unrealistic utopia that is shown to the reader in the first chapters. Hunger Games is another dystopian novel in which we see the abuse of power the government has over its people. Here we see how the government, the Capitol, is a completely totalitarian one. It portrays the way that ordinary people are being dehumanized in this made up world. This dehumanization is being caused by the dictatorship led by President Snow. • 3. The Blind Side Analysis The Blind Side, written and directed by John Less Hancock, is a nonfiction sports film based on Michael Oher, who is an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens. In this biographical film, Oher was a homeless African American teenager and had little formal education. He grew up in the Memphis s projects and his mother was a drug addict while his father was never in his life. Due to Oher s family circumstances, he was in and out of foster homes. One day, Leigh Anne Tuohy and her husband Sean Tuohydecided to adopt Oher. The Tuohy s provided Oher with a home, a tutor to improve his grades, and invested in his football career. Oher signed on with the University of Mississippi and later got drafted as an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens of National Football League(NFL) in 2009. The Blind Side presents socialization through game stage, poverty, role transitions, id, ego, superego, and moral reasoning. The game stage is when someone is learning how to play on teams with other people and start taking the roles of others (Haar, 2017). In the movie, Michael Oher started learning how to play with his teammates on the football field. He was told to protect his teammates from the other team, and he did that impressively. For example, in one of the scenes he protected his teammates on the field by taking another player on the other team home, meaning he blocked him all the way to other side of the field. Another form of socialization shown in this movie was poverty. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the Salvation Army is an international charity that helps people, not only across the United States but in many countries as well, it was hard to find an organization that was only in one other state that someone could compare it to because of its magnitude. Instead, this paper will focus on an organization that was on the same level as the Salvation Army s as well as similar to its cause. Feeding America is a national charity that helps to feed the hungry across the nation. However, this paper will focus on one of its locations in Fort Pierce, Florida, called Treasure Coast Food Bank. Both of these organizations offer similar aide to those in need and have the same goals of feeding America s hungry. ( The 50 Largest U.S. Charities , n.d.) A lot of these statistics show that Feeding America has higher percentages in most areas compared to the Salvation Army. • 5. The Causes Of Air Pollution In Beijing, China Beijing, China has a coal mining history of nearly 800 and some odd years. This has been a major air pollutant and the main reason for it is because its economy has grown substantially in the last 30 years. Worldwide, there are twenty cities with the highest, worst air pollution, sixteen of those cities are within China alone. The main causes of Beijing s air pollutioncan be pointed to several factors. Large economical growth, an increase in vehicles on the roads, growth in population, and manufacturing. China has also experienced major economic growth with a large rise in Gross Domestic Product. This increase can be connected with pollution. Vehicles are just one contributor to pollution which we will discuss later in this paper. The population growth in Beijing contributes to a big portion of its pollution. The population has risen from 11 million to 16 million in just 7 years, and has nearly doubled over the past century. Factories that utilize coal burning contribute to the smogcurrently present in Beijing. Many of these factories depend on outdated and inefficient technology which emits air pollutants. Beijing is a victim of its own topography since it s surrounded by mountains which traps pollution within the city. Air quality worsens in the spring and summer seasons when the humidity and temperature levels increase. Air pollution has been so drastic to the point that the city often engulfs in smog making it near zero visibility which in turn causing road ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay Judith and Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes I had never heard of the artist Artemisia Gentileschi before this introductory Art course. Of all the paintings and sculptures found within the book, it was her work that stood out and spoke to me. Judith and Maidservant with the head of Holofernes is a particularly rich oil painting by the Italian Gentileschi, painted circa 1625 Europe. Her large canvas measures 72 and 1/2 inches by 55 and 3/4 inches and began as a biblical story telling inspiration come to life within the oil. Located at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the paintingwas a gift to the institute from Art collector Mr. Leslie H. Green in 1952. Artemisia continued an affair with Agostino under the promise of marriage, when the marriage never happened, her father brought charges against Tassi and a trial ensued, to which Artemisia was tortured during a gynecological examination for the trial. Again life imitating art and a testament toward the women depicted in her paintings. Miss Gentileschi married a man named Pierantonio Stiattesi and they moved to Florence. As mentioned, Artemisia had 5 children, however only her daughter Prudentia survived into adulthood. After her mother s death in 1656, Prudentia disappeared from history. I believe, as do others, Judith and the Maidservant with the head of Holofernes is perhaps homage to her rape and subsequent treatment during her adolescent years. Her painting`s inspiration also plays tribute to the biblical story of Judith, who sleeps with the King Holofernes and than decapitates the drunk King in his sleep. Both Judith and the maidservant are now dominate in the painting over the dead male, they are quiet, unobtrusive and tense. A single candle burns within the dark room creating stark contrast between light and dark. The artist`s great skill can be seen in the bright highlighted details of Judith s hand and in the folds of clothing of the two. Depth and dark core detail can also be seen in the dark and reflective shadow areas within the room. Judith s hand covers the candlelight as she peers at the outside world, perhaps in an attempt to help in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Character Of Billy s The Landlady The Landlady Even though the gruesome, ghastly and demonic story known as The Landlady ends in a disturbing way, it portrays many characteristics about the protagonist, Billy. There are numerous ways to characterize Billy, a 17 year old kid on his first business trip in the strange city of Bath, England. Billy begins his journey to a hotel known as the Bell and Dragon but stumbles to a halt when he sees a seemingly cozy bed and breakfast that catches his eye. For a few pages everything seems great; unfortunately for Billy, he has some flaws which ultimately lead to his shocking death at the hands of a demented landlady. These are curiosity, a tendency to miss important clues, and gullibility. The gullible nature of Billy Weaver is quite interesting as he does not show any sign of stupidity, but his gullible state got the best of him. There are numerous reasons to portray the nature of Billy as abnormal. The first sign shown by Billy is when he figures out the cost of staying at the Bed and Breakfast for a night. In the passage, it states Five and sixpence a night, including breakfast (Dahl 2). He subsequently says it was fantastically cheap (Dahl 2). but he never thought of the consequences he would face or think why it was so cheap, as many places would charge twice as much. This shows his gullible state of mind at the extremes. Billy Weaver finally asks about how this cheap of a place did not get lots of customers and she answered: I m inclined to be ... One of the most important changes that the railroads caused was the increase of convenience For citizens all throughout the United States. By traveling via train passengers could reach their destination in 90% of the time compared to the travel methods before. This also caused a large increase in Western Settlement. Now, families did not have to worry about the harsh and long travel they would have had to make to go West just a few years before. People did not have to worry about weather, supply shortage, disease, and more, as railroad travel helped all of those situations. Social Effects Of Advertising In Advertising When going shopping, watching the television or looking in magazines, young girls are among the most targeted, being affected and vulnerable to the social influences of marketing and advertisements. Many advertisements of clothing have depicted the female form in a sexually provocative manner. Sexualisation is when a person s value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behaviour, to the exclusion of other characteristics. Furthermore, sexual objectificationis when the female body is seen as an object of male desire, which leads to a woman s worth being her body s appearance and sexual function. • 13. Ancient Cosmology And The Natural Laws Of The Universe It has been embedded in Chinese psyche that nature is a powerful force which nurtures life and human beings but could also be unpredictable, uncontrollable and terribly devastating. Always bearing in mind the incredible power of nature, early Chinese noticed the perpetual transformation and interchange between all elements in the universe in order to inhibit, to support, to impact and to impulse each other s development and expansion. Therefore, it is a common belief among most Chinese that harmony is the essence of life and all living beings coordinate under the natural laws of the universe. This ancient cosmology leads us to the concept of yin and yang, a famous Chinese philosophyexplaining the balance of all elements in the universe.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yin yang, in its simplest concept, is derived from peasant s daily life and was only meant to explain natural phenomena: the rise and set of the sun, an essential force controlling Chinese s farming, trading and production. The yang symbol implies the sunlight during the day when peasants start their day at the fields while yin illustrates a lack of sunlight at night when farmers return home to rest. This sun based daily pattern leads to further implication which associates yang with movement and activity (dong) and yin, on the other hand, with rest and passivity (jing). There is not much historical evidence suggesting other possible original meanings of yin and yang. However, no matter how and when the primitive concept of yin yang was formed, it has become profoundly influential in Chinese and other East Asian culture. At the beginning, yin and yang existed as two independent and unconnected concepts. Later then, we can see these two characters be written together for the first time in a verse from Shijing (Book of Songs), one of Zhou Dynasty s famous classic: Viewing the scenery at a hill, looking for yinyang . Yin and yang in this implication are interpreted as the shady and sunny sides of a hill, but meanwhile emphasizes the general impact of the sun on that hill. Nowadays, yin and yang can be used to represent many contrasting yet coordinating aspects of different objects. Yang can be masculine, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hybrids use NiMH batteries, not the environmentally problematic rechargeable nickel cadmium. Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are benign. For Peter, he is the skeptical type of Christian. One who is doubtful by how God can use him to help build God s kingdom, yet at times he forgets that it is only Christ who can defeat evil and not by his strength alone. Edmund is the type of Christian who has sinned and fallen short many times along the road before choosing to love and follow Christ. Lastly, Lucy represents the Christians who just love, follow and dedicate their lives to Christ without hesitation and without doubt. Lucy s childlikeness showcases how Christians should love and trust Christ with our lives. Since the four children can be seen as symbolisms of human beings, their relationship with Aslan shows a lot about the grace, mercy and overall character of God. One of the main examples where this is seen is the grace that Aslan showed to Edmund who was a traitor. • 20. Summary Of Magical Realism In A Very Old Man With Enormous... The phrase magical realism in the context of literature was first coined by the Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier to describe the combination of the fantastic and everyday occurrences in Latin American fiction. Over time, the term has been vastly modified by writers from a plethora of backgrounds. Nevertheless, magical realism still refers to the tendency to mix the magical and terrestrial in a context of realistic narration, as seen in the works of Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez. Born in Columbia, Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez introduces readers to magical realism through one of his short stories A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by combining earthly and fantastic elements to create an image of an ordinary society with mythical creatures. In his work, Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez effectively illustrates the coexistence of cruelty and moralityin society through the strategic utilization of magical realism. Traditionally, many myths and legends portray angels as elegant, beautiful creatures, but in MГЎrquez s short storythe angel is portrayed as a disease infected ragpicker (MГЎrquez 1). The story begins when Pelayo and Elisenda, MГЎrquez s main characters, discover an old man lying in their courtyard. They are unsure of his origins, but know that he has enormous wings and speak in an incomprehensible dialect (MГЎrquez 1). Despite these uncertainties, they decide to house the questionable man in their chicken coop and utilize him to their own interests when they discover that he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Erik Erikson s Explanation Of Psychosocial Development Erik Erikson s explanation of psychosocial development is one of the best known theories of personality in psychology. The term psychosocial development is the pattern of change in emotions, personality and social relationship ( A Child s World 10). Erikson believed that the achievements and failures of earlier stages influence later stages, whereas later stages change and transform earlier ones. His theory shows the impact on social relationships throughout one s entire life. Each individual goes through eight developmental stages, and each stage is characterized by a different crisis in personality a major psychosocial theme that is above all important at that time but will remain an issue to some degree throughout the rest of life ( A Child s World). To Erikson, the sequence of the stages are set by nature. It is within the set limits that nurture works its ways ( Erikson s Stages of Development ). Developmental scientists study three major domains, or aspects, of the self: physical, cognitive, and psychosocial. Growth of the body and brain, sensory capacities, motor skills, and health are parts of physical development. Learning, attention, memory, language, thinking, reasoning, and creativity make up cognitive development. Emotions, personality, and social relationships are aspects of psychosocial development ( Experience Human Development ). Each aspect of development affects the others. Matthew San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome Located in the Contarelli Chapel, this oil on canvas is one of three by Caravaggio that depict an event in Matthew s life. In the gospel of Mark, the story of Jesus calling Levi (who later becomes Matthew) is short and simple, but Caravaggio s interpretation contains much richer detail. In The Calling of St. Matthew, the event seems to take place behind a sketchy tavern where tax collectors greedily count money they have extorted from the community. Three of the tax collectors are painted in fancy clothing with weapons, while an older Matthew can be spotted with another older man peeking over his shoulder. Christ shows up on the right of the painting with Saint Peter and points in Matthew s direction. Peter in disbelief can be seen pointing at himself wondering if Jesus is referring to him. If one looks closely, Jesus hand is a mirrored image of Adam s hand from Michelangelo s The creation of Adam on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Adam is known as the one who causes the fall of humankind, while Christ is the one who redeems mankind. Jesus arm is extended behind Saint Peter, which can be seen as a reminder that the call of Christ is mediated through the church. It is also interesting that light, similar to a spotlight, is shining right over Jesus head and onto St. Matthew. It is also shining directly on the window, which contains the symbol of a ... • 24. Literary Analysis Of The Widow s Lamnt In Springtime William Carlos Williams was from Rutherford, New Jersey, born in 1883. By trade, he was both a doctor and writer. Williams published poetry, novels, and essays in small magazines. Williams started as an imagist movement poet, which emphasized simplicity, clarity of expression, and precision through the use of exacting visual images (poets.org). He later began to write more about the life of everyday people. His poem, The Widow s Lament in Springtime follows this writing style. The poem The Widow s Lament in Springtime is a poem about a women who has lost her husband of thirty five years. Williams writes in the voice of a grieving woman instead of in his own voice. Now that her husband has died, the widow cannot find joy in her yard that she used to love. The widow may even be considering suicide. Williams, writing in free verse, writes a metaphor comparing the grief of a widow to her blooming yard in the springtime setting a tone of great sadness for the widow. The title itself gives us important clues about this poem. From the beginning before even reading the first line of the poem, we know that it will be a sad story. The widow being someone who has experienced a loss and lament is a word used for passionate grief and sorrow. Springtime is a time of growth and rebirth, the affirming of new life. Williams title may lead us to believe that the widow is in the early stages of life without her husband and the early stages of grief. This may be her first spring without her husband. She is exploring the overwhelming feelings of grief over losing her husband, comparing her grief to the new life or blooming of her yard. The widow begins by telling us Sorrow is my own yard (Reed). She, the widow is comparing the sorrow and grief that she feels with her yard. She takes ownership of her pain in the phrase my own . Springtime is usually a time of renewal and growth, but for the widow it is a time of sorrow and pain, deep sadness because her husband is not there with her this year. The new growth of her yard just closes round me this year . Something that is closing around you may make you feel trapped, or uncomfortable. This year her yard brings her feeling of pain. In the past crimes like fraud, embezzlement, income tax evasion, and abuse of political and legal powers were treated by authorities more than typical crimes. Historically, most white collar criminals were simply fired or fined. Rarely were jail sentences imposed let alone served. This leniency stemmed from the perception that a high status individual implicated in criminal activity was sufficiently punished by the loss of their social stature and partly from the fact that most white collar crimes are so called victimless offenses. Only recently has this attitude begun to change. White collar crime has become an increasing problem in the latter part of the twentieth century. Authorities in the U.S., in particular, are dealing more severely with such crimes. Identity theft has been a problem facing police departments recently. It is a crime in which someone obtains and uses another person s personal information in a way that involves fraud. The Rise And Fall Of Troy Maxon The Rise and Fall of Troy Maxon: An Analysis of August Wilson s play Fences In Fences, August Wilson, the playwright, provides a believable and powerful examination of the African American experience in the late 1950 s. It provides an apt portrayal of the mentality of African American men going into the civil rights movement, as well as a well developed account of the friction that occurs between a father and a son, and a husband and wife in the face of conflict. According to Wilson, his play provides Caucasians with a view into an African Americans life to find similarities to their own (Kennedy and Gioia 1883). Not only did Wilson accomplish this, but also provided a representation of interfamily relationships that occurs in many cultures. For instance, Katz maintains that the father son relationship contains ... inherent seeds of conflict (Katz). The relationship between Cory and Troy mirrors the conflict between many young men and their fathers as they attempt to create their identity and independence while the fathers are still attempting to shape their future based on their experiences, creating conflict that transcends differences in race and culture. So the research that was found was from tennessee. We researched Tennessee s minor league baseball team, las vegas minor league baseball team, and then Tennessee Titans NFL team. So we figured that the Las Vegas minor league team gets about nine million dollars a year, then the tennessee minor league team gets about eight million seventy five thousand a year, and the last one we researched was the Tennessee Titans which they receive three hundred forty two million a year. So we set up ratios to figure the cost of what our team received, this ratio is set up as X over 9 is equal to 342 millions over 8.75 million, then we multiplied 342 million and 9 million, then divided the 8.75 million to get us with 351, 771, 428. This number represent how much we would receive from nevada. Then you add in the yearly budget the NFL gives each team which is about 226,400,000, so the total funding our team would like to receive with both NFL and Nevada s funding each year would be around 578,171,428.... The Imperfection Of The Greek Parthenon The Athenian Greeks at the height of their power built a temple called the Parthenon which was a monument to their core values of perfectionism, humanism, and rationalism. It is important to understand that the human eye has imperfections which deceive the mind, so one can understand the unique steps that were taken to achieve the illusion of perfection to the human eye. The Greeks loved perfection, and as seen in the Parthenon, the Greek architects purposely made the Parthenon imperfect to account for the imperfections in the human eye. This was done so that when one views the Parthenon with the naked eye, it appears to be perfectly symmetrical, straight, and proportional. The entire Parthenon does not have a single right angle. An example of the Greeks compensating for the imperfections of the human eye is seen in the base of the Parthenon, which from a picture or in real life looks perfectly straight, but in reality it is actually curved slightly upward. It is curved because the Greeks knew that if you have a perfectly flat base for a building, it appears curved to the human eye. To account for that, the Greeks made it so that the base was already curved. The Greeks also curved the columns of the Parthenon inward, because if the columns were straight, it would appear to be curving outward. Again, the Greeks knew about how the human eye deceives the mind, and decided that they must trick the eye to please the mind. This was all done because the Greeks strived for ... For many it is a major part of our lives, for some more than others. When the American Dream is asked to be explained or defined a common response is that it is an accomplishment of wealth and prosperity through hard work and success, especially those living in the United States. When searched, the American Dream is described as the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American (American Dream, Dictionary.com). This description plays a major role as these are the goals that were set to come from the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Many fought for the right to be free especially when it came to racial inequality in our country but many did not receive these benefits or opportunities of equality as there were negative and positive effects that came directly from the Civil Rights Movement. The first American slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Their job was to aid in the production of crops such as tobacco as the Virginians were desperate for labor, to grow enough to stay alive... needed labor, to grow corn for subsistence, to grow tobacco for export (Zinn 24,25). The slaves that were being brought to the Americas were seen as builders of the economic foundations of the new nation and as time passed the ownership of slaves dwindled but inequality and segregation grew to be more prevalent in the U.S ( Slavery in America ). On January 1st, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order which freed slaves in the United States not within the Confederacy, under Union Control. Two years later the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution which abolished slavery but many Southern States managed to create unattainable prerequisites for blacks to live, work or participate in society. With nearly one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans were still treated just as unequally. Oppression, race inspired violence, segregation and an unequal world of disenfranchisement lingered across Southern States for African Americans. The Jim Crow Laws ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Decay And Its Effects On The Global Amount Of Carbon Decay Decay All living things must decay to balance the global amount of carbon. Decay can take many years to be completed. Some decay more rapidly than others. For instance, Robinia Pseudoacacia, or Black Locust, has a slower decay rate than coniferous. These both also differ from the decay of human bodies. There are also some less substantial things that can decay as well, but are not needed for balance. All softwoods come from coniferous trees. They grow faster than hardwoodtrees, and are easier to manufacture. This is because the trees grow fairly tall and straight which makes it easier to cut long, straight planks. Because of the easy manufacturing, this type of woodcomes very cheap. Most softwoodis used for indoor furniture, or decoration. Some types of softwood trees are: pine, spruce, cedar, and redwood. These trees decay faster for the same reason they are easily manufactured. Manufacturers put several layers of paint on some of the trees. This is one factor that contributes in preventing decay. All it does though, is keep out the fungus that causes decay (mr dt.com). The only agent of wood decay are fungi. Wood does deteriorate from insects, UV rays, and marine animals, but this is not actually decay. There are three types of decay; white, brown, and soft. You can tell the difference between them by looking at the color of the wood as it decays. White looks bleached, brown is of course a brown color, but soft can be either. In white rot the whitish color comes from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Positive Effects Of Attitude Effects of Attitude Distance, time, money, tiredness and several other things in life are just a question of one s attitude. Context and situations decide the attitude. If a person has to travel say 15 to 20 miles per day to his workplace, he will definitely be cribbing. On the other hand, if the remuneration is going to be hefty he will not mind travelling the same distance. The distance has not changed, but his attitude towards remuneration makes this passable. One often complains that he does not have time for even the small things in life. Just an introspection shall reveal that it is an excuse one gives to oneself. A personwho does not have time for a courtesy call to a related person will definitely be able to squeeze in time to spend time with his friend in spite of any tight schedule. After a whole day of work, spending hours at the gym seem alright, but helping out your mother or spouse at home may seem a burden or vice versa. Or else if a friend calls for an outing will freak out forgetting both the above. It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 46. Grinnell Symphony Orchestra Analysis The Grinnell Symphony Orchestra s concert with cowboy singer Dave Stamey was billed as an intriguing and thought provoking junction between the genres of classical and Western. The mix of traditional cowboy music and orchestral arrangement had the potential to highlight the strengths of the performers and genres; it was certainly interesting to hear songs typically performed solo being played with a full orchestra, but a number of red flags popped out immediately and ended up spoiling the experience. Poor planning and a failure to be conscious of cultural politics ultimately left a bad taste in my mouth. Factors unrelated to this intersection of genres rehearsal timing, audience demographics, and Dave Stamey s racist habits and mannerisms ended up highlighting the negative instead. A number of years ago, I had the opportunity to play a concert with Livingston Taylor (also known as Budget James Taylor ), providing an opportunity for a folk rock singer songwriter to perform standards with a full jazzband something not entirely different from the Stamey orchestra relationship. Much like the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra, we only had one extended rehearsal with our guest after several months of rehearsing our charts; inevitably, there were some kinks to iron out in tempo, mood, and overall consistency. Unlike the GSO s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
