The region of Alabama was initially dominated by the French until 1763 when it passed to English control, and was later annexed by the U.S. in 1783. It became the state of Alabama in 1819 but was part of the Confederate States during the Civil War, rejoining the Union in 1868 after the Confederate defeat.

1819. In 1861, it was part of the Confederate States of
America, having fought during the American Civil War

the Confederates, Alabama was readmitted to the Union
in June 1868
