Federalism is the division of powers between a central government and regional governments. The
United States have a federal system of government where the states and national government practice
the seperation of powers system within their own scopes of authority. The Fourth Amendment protects
the right of the people against unreasonable searches and seizures . The Fourth Amendment, spoke to
the importance of federalism as a mechanism to secure liberty for the American people. State courts
would be responsible for determining if the searches were conducted with reasonableness, giving the
government the closest to the people the most say in such matters. Regarding privacy rights there have
been positive and negative impacts throughout history. A conflict ensued between two groups
(Federalists and Anti Federalists) before the new constitution could be ratified. Negotiations between
two groups: Federalists, who preferred a strong central government and Anti Federalists, who
preferred state s rights, finally agreed to adopt the Bill of Rights. These amendments deal with
freedom of speech and religion, right to bear arms, right to jury trials, right to due process, right to
compensation if property is seized for a public purpose, right to privacy in so far as it bars an illegal
search of one s premises and possessions, and states rights. The Fourth Amendment protects the right

In Many Developing Countries, Corruption Is A Barrier To
In many developing countries, corruption is a barrier to economic growth. Corruption can prevent the
fair allocation of goods and services to citizens by trickling to aspects of everyday life. On a
macroeconomic level, scholars are of the belief that corruption hinders economic growth and
development (Mauro, 1995).
Definition
Corruption is often described as a cancer, one official simply referred to it as the AIDs of democracy
(Johnston, 1996). Corruption has been defined in a variety of ways, including as dishonest or
fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery . There is no clear cut definition of
corruption. Nevertheless, as mentioned in the previous section the World Bank s definition will be

3. A corruption index sold by the International Country Risk Guide (ICRG), a private business
consulting company.
While the indicators have been widely used in empirical research, some researchers have questioned
about the accuracy of these measures and the validity of their use in empirical research (Campbell,
2013). As most estimates of corruption are based on surveys of perception. These perception surveys
have the advantage of good coverage it is much easier to ask someone s perceptions of corruption than
to measure corruption. However, the validity and reliability of perception indicators as measures of
corruption, they remain in fact, a reference for people and both businesses and political leaders to
make decisions, enabling them to gauge the impact of corruption on the economy. Some would see as
better to go in with some information rather than nothing at all.
There are two competing views when discussing corruption. The first suggest that corruption creates
barriers to a country s development. This is mainly seen in recent literature, for example, Rose
Ackerman (1999) and Knack and Keefer (1995). The second being that corruption can be beneficial
for a country s development as they can easily overcome barriers such as regulation to complete
projects although this is not a popular opinion. This review mainly tackles literature from the school of
thought that corruption can be harmful to a

Use of Symbolism in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
In stories there will be objects that will constantly be mentioned within the story. This is what is
known as Symbolism. Symbolism is the use of object, name, or person to represent an idea. If a name
is being use, a name such as autumn can represent the adulthood of a human. Creatures such as an
Eagle, represents Freedom and America . Even inanimate objects can represent ideas; the light bulb
represents ideas that just sparked into a character s head.
In the short story, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, a village has just entered the month of June,
meaning that the lottery is to begin. When everyone was present, the heads of the households names
were called one by one to pick up a slip of paper. It was then discovered that the ... Show more content

The black box is not only Alliteration, but it is also a symbol in The Lottery . Martine Ma declares,
The black box holds the key between life or death for every single one of the townspeople . Inside the
black box is a slip of paper (Jackson1870) with a black spot (Jackson1870) that would declare the
death of a villager and the sacrifice for the harvest. The black box also represents evil in The Lottery .
Seth Cassel stated, The villagers have become entranced in the gruesome tradition of stoning people.

The pieces of paper represent the fragility and feebleness of life, implies Lucas Sheelat. Paper is
proven to be fragile; easy to rip even. Just like the lives in the village their lives hang in the balance of
a single slip of paper that can easily tear their very life away. The three legged stool that carried the
black box up is also a symbol in the story. The article Symbolism, Imagery, and Allegory: The Black
Box and The Three Legged Stool declares The three legs of the stool are like the three aspects of the
Christian Trinity. The Holy Trinity in Christianity is known as the holder of life and all things good.
To the villagers, the stool holding up the black box is

Czech Red Cross Visual Analysis
Visual Analysis Essay Imagine being an angel for someone by saving their life and being a certified
guardian wherever you go. By attending a first aid training course one can save the lives of many. The
Czech Red Cross ad depicts an image of sorrow and grief which tells the audience that with first aid
training, we can all save the lives. They use colors of dark greys and blacks to show the sadness in the
picture, as well as the color red to show a sense of love and peace. They use an angel kneeling before
a casket trying to resurrect the dead by using CPR. Its intended for others to look at this ad and see
themselves as the angel, saving one s life, and becoming their guardian. The Czech Red Cross depicts
an emotional and deep scene to get their message out into the world. They illustrate a stone angel,
which appears to be a statue, kneeling before a casket. On the casket, there is a single red candle

The red candle can symbolize many things. The red candle can represent death in which it expresses
blood and a sense of regret or sorrow. It can also exemplify peace, love, and serenity, which can make
readers feel love towards the dead in the casket, as well as a bit of regret. The scene itself is very dark
and woodsy. The colors used include dark shades of blue, purple, grey, and black. These colors can
symbolize sorrow, grief, and death. The Czech Red Cross wants views or their ad to feel the sorrow in
the picture. These colors make one feel sad and regret over not taking a first aid training course to save
lives. The twilight sunset in the background sets the mood of sorrow and grief as well. The bright,
orange, white sun setting in the background can symbolize peace and hope. It gives viewers hope that

The Roots Of The European Union
INTRODUCTION The roots of the European Union can be traced back to the early 1950 s when a
small number of countries made a decision to join together as a way to resolve any potential conflict
nurture economic growth and common values across the continent. There was a desire to promote
common values and membership was opened to all European countries. Since the inception the
number of members has grown from a founding six countries to what we now know as the modern
day EU with a current total of 28 countries with a further 8 countries under application review. In
1992, what was then a group of twelve countries, joined together to form the Customs Community
Code which was eventually introduced in January 1993. The code effectively merged the individual
customs regulations in to a single customs union. BENEFITS OF EU TRADE There are many
benefits of trading within the EU, the agreement in 1993 was effectively the start of what we now
refer to as the single market, it removed the borders of a member country for trade enabling the free
movement of goods between members without the encumbrance of the customs process and reducing
the need of a significant amount of accompanying documents that was required for goods being
moved across borders. Previously it was necessary for goods to be shipped with certificates of origin,
Invoices, packing lists with a full breakdown of package contents. If moved by road, which is the
normal method of transport within the EU, a CMR transport note

The Human Of Human Trafficking Essay
Although slavery was abolished in 1865, the practice of it is still very alive today. Human trafficking,
a form of modern slavery, is the buying and selling of people, whether it s for forced labor or
commercial sex. Every year, thousands of adults and children, especially girls, are forced into the
endless trafficking ring. The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million
victims of human trafficking globally ( The Facts ). The human trafficking industry is a worldwide
network that is worth an estimated 150 billion dollars ( The Facts ). Millions of stories about victims
experiences can be found and read. Many of these victims are sucked into the world of human
trafficking because they are immigrants trying to escape to the U.S. and have debts to pay off once
they get there. Trafficking happens everywhere, from big city shopping centers, to small town
massage parlors. People are being captured, sold and transported across the world via various forms of
transportation at all times. With updated technology, it becomes easier and easier to buy and sell these
slaves and with this, the chances of being caught and punished is almost nothing. Many people think
slavery is dead; however, human trafficking is still alive and it needs to be stopped because many
people are being forced into involuntary sex and labor. Normally, human trafficking can be identified
as one of two different kinds of trafficking. The two kinds of trafficking are known as

The Chaser By John Collier
Each story is unique in their own way. For each piece of literature, a name is to be branded for the
piece of work. Titles are more often than none looked over, the reader anxious to flip through the
pages of words. However, for some pieces of literature, the title of the story is the most fundamental
part of the process in trying to understand a story. The short story The Chaser by John Collier is an
excellent example as to why overlooking the title can be a great taboo. This story describes a desperate
man s attempts to make the love of his life love him back by a love potion. However, through the lines
of the text, the old potion seller was hinting that further on in his consumer s life, he would realize he
had made a grave mistake.

The Importance Of Teachers On The Classroom Environment
In order to develop strong relationships with my students, colleagues, and parents, I plan to do a
variety of little things to yield big results. The relationship that teachers have with students is vital to
the classroom environment. In You ve Got to Reach Them to Teach Them, Mary Kim Schrek writes
that the human encounter between teacher and student is often a more powerful teaching tool than the
academic content, the grade, the data analysis, and the hours spent picking apart the curriculum
(Schrek, 2011, p. 5). In order to establish such relationships, I plan to follow a four step procedure that
I read about in an article by Nina Sears on the National Education Association s website. Sears article
suggests that a teacher get to know their students, individualize the curriculum, watch what they say,
and keep trying to reach students (Sears, 2014). As an attempt to get to know my students, I will create
a little survey on the first day of school for each student to fill out; questions would include asking my
students what their favorite color is or what type of books they like to read. By doing this, I will learn
about my students likes and dislikes and how to use their answer in the curriculum. Individualizing the
curriculum might seem like a huge undertaking but if a teacher is willing to work with the student, it is
not a big deal. For example, I was an auditory learner and I had a teacher who altered the project
requirements so I could write a song to

Pros Of A Conscientious Objector
In this essay I will talk a little bit about conscientious objector. First of all what is a conscientious
object? Well a conscientious objector where the eligible men who opposed to serve in war because it
was against their deeply held moral or religious belief.
The first thing a person can think and ask is why they didn t want to serve in war and help their
country. There were many reasons some of them are for example religion and moral values. Men didn
t want to carry a weapon and kill people, some came to their beliefs on historic peace church. Actually
the ones from religion where more on consideration because of their beliefs, but the ones that didn t
want to go were punished.

Every year, 15th May marks International Conscientious Objector day is a day to celebrate those who
have and those who continue to resist war, especially by refusing to be part of military structures.
As an opinion actually there was nothing wrong about refusing to join the army everyone has the right
to say aa simple no. it s understandable that in that period of time the military forced needed help
because they were having a rough time at war but they have to understand that men were scared and
that for them killing someone really meant something it wasn t as simple as that. It wasn t fair to
punish the conscientious objectors it wasn t fair to put them in jail or a death sentence. I appreciate
every men that refuse to kill because that means that they were good people. And those who served in
the army are good too but that doesn t mean they are better than the ones that didn t went to combat. I

I would like to acknowledge the client development on their company, which makes a granite cleaning

of a company. While the client was involved in the sole proprietorship, there were different
characteristics of the business that the expansion was required to be utilized, but there were still issues

There will be many different, individuals, contracts, laws, and risks that the clients will have to face in
order to accomplish their goal for their business. Hopson also mentioned that there are advantages and
disadvantages of the various entity choices for a growing small business that an owner intends to pass
on to family members or sell upon retirement. Advisors must ensure that business owners understand
the asset protection issues, tax advantages, and estate planning implications for the entity choice that
the client will choose (2014, p.42).
Before making the decision of the business entity, it is important that the client understands the
different aspect of each of the business entities. With this in mind, small business owners and their
advisors should examine the alternatives available (Miller, 2014, p.43). The client needs to be
informed that going from a sole proprietorship to other business entities such as partnership, limited
liability company, partnership s, and corporation required a lot of research. A partnership required two
or more individuals in an agreement to carry on as a co worker of a business. It is important that both
individuals have a professional and positive relationship in order to accomplish their goal together.
The partnership is split up into two types of partnership, which is general and limited. The difference
between the partnerships is that the general partnership doesn t require formation, but limited
partnership required

Was John Brown A Hero
John Brown the Hero John Brown has been a controversial political figure to generations of
Americans across the nation. He is often regarded as one of two polarizing ideals, the unapologetic
freedom fighting abolitionist and then as the religious zealot turned domestic terrorist. There is even a
case to be made that John Brown was America s first domestic terrorist. While Brown s methods may
have been extreme, he delivered his intended message; that change needed to occur for the country to
be truly free. John Brown s actions and beliefs that he held that led to the raid at Harper s Ferry were
noble and had major cultural impact on American society at that time. John Brown was a man who is
by definition non conformist . He grew up wealthy and educated, but with little formal education he

what it can accomplish until you begin to analyze it. In the 1967 film, The Jungle Book, there were
various functions that were undoubtedly established thanks to the numerous sounds featured in the
film. The various sounds that were utilized throughout the film successfully revealed character, shaped
the audience s attention, and shaped the audience s feelings. Although there were many sounds and

The Recipe for Nature
The Recipe for Nature
Missing Works Cited
Nature is a fluid coalescence of complex magnificence resulting from an algorithmic mastery of
simplicity. It is no doubt an awe inspiring entity that invokes both great curiosity and bafflement in
those who attempt to account for its existence and splendor. It is often seen as overly reductionistic, if
not ¡§dangerous¡¨, to try to condense the (mindless?) brilliance of nature through any sort of
mechanistic or logical means. And here we are faced with what Daniel Dennett calls Darwin¡¦s
dangerous idea: ¡§that all the fruits of evolution can be explained as the products of an algorithmic
process¡¨ (Dennett, 1995 p.60). It is no surprise that this idea might present a problem for the Homo
sapien ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, chance and randomness might disallow for the concept of ¡§survival of the fittest¡¨ and
instead allow for otherwise less adept members of the species to have increased reproducibility and
thus an increased genetic impact on subsequent generations. The fact that events can alter or in part
determine which members of a species are more likely to survive and reproduce, leads to the fact that
the specific outcome (e.g., which particular genes will be passed onto the next generation) of an
algorithmic process is not fixed, just that the inherent nature of the causal procedure is. For instance,
the algorithmic process of natural selection does not provide a certain mold by which to predict the
most viable members of a species, only that it is guaranteed that the most well adapted members of a
species will necessarily correspond to the most viable.
We now return to the question of how the complexity and intricacy of nature can be accounted for by
an algorithmic process constituted by an inundation of simple steps. William Paley¡¦s well known
watchmaker analogy is particularly useful here, in that it illustrates the problem of complexity of
design (i.e., of a watch) independent of a purposeful designer (i.e., a watchmaker). If a watch
represents a complexity in design that could not have possible arisen out of purposeless chance or
randomness alone, it must therefore have required a significant amount of ¡§design work¡¨ (i.e., work
done) (Dennett,

Self Emergency Contraception Is a Right Women Should Have
I will argue that pharmacists lack an absolute right to object the dispersal of emergency contraception.
Further, I will argue that the reasons offered for refusals regarding emergency contraception by
pharmacists are not reasonable, even given their moral reservations, providers have a professional
ethical obligation to dispense emergency conception. The refusal to sell emergency contraception by
pharmacists ultimately infringes on women s right to exercise autonomy over their reproductive
future.
Over the past months, occurrences of pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions, or sell emergency
contraception over the counter have drawn in significant media attention.
Lawmakers at the state and federal rank have replied with an infinite number of proposals created to
protect users. These proposals have been addressing the related questions of whether pharmacists
should be allowed to refuse to fill valid prescriptions on moral or religious grounds, and, if so, what
obligation the pharmacy has to the public when its pharmacist refuses. Lawmakers focusing on the
pharmacists role and addressing the pharmacy s responsibility to users only when a pharmacist refuses
to fill prescriptions fails to address a related but distinct problem that women may come across:
pharmacies that, as a matter of policy, refuse to sell emergency contraception, even when they sell
ordinary birth control pills. According to the article there has been a rising number of pharmacists
refusing to dispense

Analysis of Mise-En-Scene in the Film American Beauty Essay
How does mise en scene create meaning and provoke response in the opening of American Beauty?
The opening scene of American Beauty shows a teenage girl lying in a bed, venting her feelings
towards her father. In this, the audience sees her in dull clothing and colours, minimal make up and
has greasy looking hair. As she sits up, her hair falls around her face and she stares directly into the
camera, giving a sense of unease to the audience.
The next shot is an establishing shot, showing the street where the main character, Leister, lives. Its
fall/autumn time and the trees are bare or dying, possibly indicating and foreshadowing a death later
on in the movie. Also the streets are very linear, all vertical and in uniform, as it were. ... Show more

woman clips it from the bush. This rose is called American Beauty which is also the name of the film.
She is dressed in a plain grey suit and a clean white apron, again fitting in with the colour scheme of
the interior decor. She also wears pearl earrings and a pearl necklace with her hair perfectly framing
this and has impeccable make up, indicating what the perfect American housewife should resemble.
She also converses with the homosexual neighbours about the secret to her roses flourishing so well;
she seems happy and overly enthusiastic. The audience then see a shot of Leister, again, enclosed in an
environment this time the window. The audience sees him behind the window panes, in between two
bright blue shutters, indicating his isolation and loneliness within his own home. The colour blue is
also an interesting choice by the director. Blue suggests calm and tranquillity within the home, and
also reflects on the colour of the perfect blue sky. Leister seems to fit in as he reflects on his own life

human mind and soul. A beautiful woman is carried off by evil, a play on the
Beauty and the Beast themes that would become so popular in horror films.
Used expressionism, films that explored dream, nightmare and psyche and that found their narrative
shape determined less by action than emotion. Used angular sets and heavy shadows to develop a
macabre and horrific atmosphere for its tale of murder and madness. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
intentionally uses sets that look artificial. The deliberate distortions were meant to portray what a
tormented soul might perceive. German expressionism, known as dada, and surrealism rejected
notions of reality, the German expressionist movement, modern art was underway. Used tilted sets,
and twisted cardboard trees. Light and shadow were used to create a response, and get the viewer
emotionally connected. Two films imported from Germany named Passion and Sumurun starring a
popular actress named Pola Negri opened the door for other German imports. The popularity of Negri
and Caligari combined helped to create a small art house market. The

The Ford Foundations Of The Cold War
The Cold War was a time of competition, vast technological improvements, and even philanthropic
efforts. Foundations such as the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, who were based in
the United States, started expanding to reach the third world. Post World War I and World War II the
United States did not want to get involved in another world war. The foundations that expanded to
reach the third world, were interested in preventing communism from taking over as the form
government in those countries. The Ford Foundation s president Paul Hoffman, was especially
concentrated on working with India, one of the poorest countries on the world. Hoffman and his
colleagues recognized a similarity in Indian to China before it was a communist

Abolitionism Of 1860
Good afternoon everyone,
After reading chapters 1 and 2 in our textbook I discovered many policies that were instated to help in
the expansion of the West. The one I would like to discuss is the Homestead Act of 1862. Shortly after
the Indian Removal Act of 1830 was instated (moving many Native Americans off of western
territories), many white individuals were hungry for more land. George Henry Evans, a labor leader in
the House, felt he had a solution to the job deficit problem arising in the East. If he could provide
these low income individuals with low cost or free land, it could help eliminate the issue. Most of the
abolitionist were in favor of this act, feeling that it could help end issues associated with slavery and
the poor. While

Council Of Chalcedon Essay
However, a diverse group ranging from the monks at Constantinople to Egyptian bishops loyal to
Dioscorus opposed the definition. They considered themselves as Pro Nicene and anti Nestorian, but
they worried that the council was being heretic . Ultimately, the Chalcedonian definition stated that
after the incarnation, Christ was in two natures without mixture, change, division or separation .
Furthermore, part of the disagreement between the Eastern and Western Church was because the
definition stated that Christ is acknowledged in two natures, which come together into one person and
one hypostasis. The critics (some Eastern churches) understood this to side with western Christology,
they felt that it diverged from the teachings of Cyril of Alexandria who said that Christ has one nature.
The church of Alexandria felt that the definition should have stated that Christ is to be acknowledged
as out of two natures and not in two natures . However, some scholars argue that the language of two
natures also derives from Cyril . Ultimately, the assertion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the case of Nestorianism, if the incarnation was a case of a male son of Mary being indwelt by the
divine son of God, then Jesus Christ is not different from a Christian because Christians believe that
they are indwelt by the son. If that was the case, then the incarnation did not take place. This would
make the doctrine of atonement null and void because it would suggest that Christians were saved by a
human being leading to whether human suffering can atone for sins. In the case of Eutychianism, if
Christ s humanity was swallowed up in his divinity, then the incarnation (God becoming man) did not
really take place, but it seems to be more a case of man extinguished and lost in God, thereby also
making the incarnation null and

The Anti Roadway Carnage Bill
Dear Citizen, My gripe is with texting and driving. This is one of the most serious public health issues
of our time. I cannot for the life of me believe this practice has not yet been outlawed. Last year in the
United States, driver distraction was the cause of 16% of all fatal crashes, killing 5800 people. A
further 515,000 people were wounded as the result of distracted driving. The worst part is that up to
50% of teenagers the least experienced drivers on the road report texting and driving. We are teaching
the next generation to drive without teaching them about responsibility. Other states have already
passed laws, but our politicians are on record as saying they cannot ban something they do
themselves. How irresponsible! Thankfully, Senator Jim Duncan is proposing a bill that would outlaw
texting and driving. Please click here to sign a petition supporting Prop 733T, the Anti Roadway
Carnage Bill, and help keep our streets safe. Sincerely, Concerned Activist This persuasive memo is
designed to sell an idea, that texting and driving should be banned. The design put forth by Bowman
(2002) is the basis of the letter. The pacing of the letter is quick, with short sentences and simple ideas.
The reason for this is to generate an emotional response to help motivate the reader. The core of the
argument comes in the first two lines, so there is little time to for the reader to tune out. Bowman also
prescribes blending ideas, including blending truth and

Fear In The Voting Booth Summary
The Journal Article, Fear in the Voting Booth: The 2004 Presidential Election, was chosen because it
offers an analysis of the role that fear played in the first election following the 9/11 attacks. This
source focuses on how the fear, anxiety and uncertainty of these attacks influenced voters behavior
during the election between Republican nominee, George W. Bush and Democratic nominee, John
Kerry. This article was chosen because of its specificity which compliments the rest of the sources.
The next source comes from the Encyclopedia of U.S. Campaigns, Elections, and Electoral Behavior
and is called Issue Salience and Voting Behavior . This encyclopedia article compliments the rest of

Portrayal Of Women In The Odyssey
The portrayal of women in society and literature is known to be sexist and male dominated. The
Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fagles, has similar portrayal of women and it presents
women as deceiving in many cases, as well as, their subservience. From a feminist perspective, one
would agree that women in The Odyssey compared to the men are deceptive and very dependent on
the males in their families, including their husbands. The men, however, are demonstrated as
independent and as the protectors of the household, while the women are forced to stay. To begin with,
women in The Odyssey are portrayed as deceptive in several situations. For example, Circe and
Odysseus men. Circe was deceiving to Odysseus men by luring them in with her voice, poisoning
them, and then holding them captive (Book 10, lines 242 254). Not only were some of the women
deceiving, but all women were perceived that way by men. When Hermes told Calypso, by the orders
of Zeus, to let Odysseus leave she confronted him and told him to go, but he hesitated because of the
thought of her deceiving him (Book 5, 125 199). Now I am willing...to send you off at last... (Book 5,
line 179). Odysseus responded to Calypso by saying, Passage home? I won t set foot on a raft until
you show me good faith, until you consent to swear, goddess, a binding oath you ll never plot some
new intrigue to harm me! (Book 5, lines 192 199). This shows that even though women are trying to
help men think one of their

The Future Prospects Of Norway
In order to discuss the future prospects of Norway for the coming years, it is interesting and useful to
review the performance of the country in the past to identify possible trends.
At the end of 2013, Norway was calculated as having the second highest GDP in the world (only
under Luxembourg), as it was 65,515 US dollars per capita. The following graph (Chart 1 see
appendix) shows the growth in Norway s GDP from 1970. Here, we can see the effect of the recession
in 2008, and how it reflected on the downfall of the GDP s value. Only until 2010 is where we see the
value become even with the pre crisis number. Yet, according to Figure 1 (below), the index shows
that it has not yet reached the value that it would have, following the trend prior to 2008.
Figure 1. Norway s Gross Domestic Product. The graphic shows the growth of GDP for Norway in
red, Luxemburg in black and the rest of the OECD countries in grey.
Source: OECD, 2014
Apart from GDP, there are also other indicators that can give us an impression of the economic
performance of Norway in the past years. For instance, in 2013 the long term unemployment rate was
9.3% and the overall trend suggests it may continue to go down (Appendix 1, Chart 1). This refers to
those in unemployment that are aged 15 and over, were without work during the reference week, yet
were available for and actively seeking for work during the previous four weeks.
Moreover, the inflation and long term interest rates

trials involving genocide or crimes against humanity
...it is often argued that trials involving genocide or crimes against humanity are less about judging the
person than about establishing the truth of the events.
In nearly all the criminal prosecutions concerned with crimes against humanity committed during or
after World War II, some observers have doubted the ability of the criminal law to deal with the events
precisely in view of their enormous moral, historical, or political significance.

Instead, it has been thought necessary so as to enable the commencement of the healing process in the
victim: only when the injustice to which a person has been subjected has been publicly recognised, the
conditions for recovering from trauma are present and the dignity of the victim may be restored.
But, arguably, this healing process had already been allowed to take place. Trials at Nuremberg,
subsequent trials by the Allies, etc.

The First Theories Of Deism In Christianity
The terms deism and theism were used interchangeably. The custom has been to use the words in a
mutually exclusive sense. A number of quite divergent theological and philosophical positions are now
indicated by the term deism. They resemble one another in that all reject one or more of the traditional
Christian theses concerning the relationship that exits between God and universe. Deism is a
theological position which accepted the supreme being as the source of finite existence, but denied the
supernatural element in Christianity, as well as rejecting Christian revelation as the only way to
salvation. Many different theories of deism that ruled the world. The first theory of deism is God
created this universe, that all things in the universe, are directed by divine providence; and that there is
a life after death in which God will reward the good and punish the evil (Carson). Divine revelation is
rejected, and it is maintained that man must depend upon his reason alone to give him some
knowledge of the existence and nature of God and of man s moral duties. The second theory of deism
is the man is either rewarded or punished in his life; there is no future life (Carson). It asserts that
whatever happiness or sorrow man experience before his final annihilation in death has ... Show more

The strongest element contributing to the development of deistic thought was the rise of many new
scientists discoveries (Carson). Discoveries made it imperative for Europeans to change their basic
idea of the universe. One contribution to the development of deism was many written accounts of
travels to unknown lands (Carson). Explorers and travelers had come upon people who had no contact
with Christianity, but who seemed nonetheless to have highly developed systems of morality and
admirable religious principles. The deists argued from this that human reason was sufficient to
establish religion and

Nihilism and Existentialism in Cormac McCarthy s The Crossing
Nihilism and Existentialism in Cormac McCarthy s The Crossing
Cormac McCarthy s second book in The Border Trilogy offers an impressive array of worldviews all
competing together in the larger narrative framework of the novel. These are not only expressed
through the life of the protagonist Billy Parham and his brother Boyd, but also in the narratives of the
many people they encounter on their horseback journeys through the hot desert sands of Mexico.
Critic Robert L. Jarrett, associate professor of English at the University of Houston Downtown,
suggests the same in Cormac McCarthy, noting that Despite the claims of the ex priest [in The
Crossing] that all men s tales are one, such visions or tales are individual, highly ... Show more

In his encyclopedic entry Nihilism, Dr. Alan Pratt, professor of Humanities at Embry Riddle
University, points to the passage in Shakespeare s Macbeth when she goes into her soliloquy about the
futility of life to demonstrate the stance of the existential nihilist in classic literature:
Out, out, brief candle!
Life s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more; it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing. (Qtd. in Pratt, para. 12.)
Other well known motifs that express the existential nihilist s perspective of life include the Greek tale
of Sisyphus, first noted by novelist Albert Camus in his 1942 book The Myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus
was a cruel king in Corinth who was condemned to spend eternity rolling a huge boulder up a
mountain, knowing full well that once he reached the top it would again only come rumbling back
down, yet he shouldered his burden again and again, faithfully trudging back up the mountainside in
compliance with his fate. For the existential nihilist, the

Female Characters In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
Female characters are very different throughout the books, but subdivide into types of nature and uses
in relation to the themes within the texts. Within E.B Whites Charlotte s Web, Phillip Pullman s The
Golden Compass: His Dark Materials, and J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone,
the reader is introduced to multiple types of domestic, maternal, feminine, and feminist characters who
support or contrast with themes within the stories. Females, such as Mrs. Weasely, Mrs. Arable, and
Ma Costa, identify the feminine quality of domesticity and motherhood. In contrast, Mrs. Coulter and
Aunt Petunia are anti mothers and portray an obsession with secure social status. In turn, some of
these qualities are meshed into the heroines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

resulting in Harry calling her a great wizard (Rowling 308). During Harry s quest, Hermione develops
a maternal nature towards Harry and Ron. She cares for Ronald and Harry, causing her to become
dedicated to nurturing them (Hidalgo 75). In the end, it is Hermione s nurturing and wit that both
enables Harry to defeat Voldemort and Professor Quirrell as well as to graduate, as she made revision

The United States have a federal system of government where the states and national government practice the seperation of powers system within their own scopes of authority. The Fourth Amendment protects the right of the people against unreasonable searches and seizures . • 4. In Many Developing Countries, Corruption Is A Barrier To In many developing countries, corruption is a barrier to economic growth. Corruption can prevent the fair allocation of goods and services to citizens by trickling to aspects of everyday life. On a macroeconomic level, scholars are of the belief that corruption hinders economic growth and development (Mauro, 1995). Definition Corruption is often described as a cancer, one official simply referred to it as the AIDs of democracy (Johnston, 1996). Corruption has been defined in a variety of ways, including as dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery . There is no clear cut definition of corruption. A corruption index sold by the International Country Risk Guide (ICRG), a private business consulting company. While the indicators have been widely used in empirical research, some researchers have questioned about the accuracy of these measures and the validity of their use in empirical research (Campbell, 2013). As most estimates of corruption are based on surveys of perception. These perception surveys have the advantage of good coverage it is much easier to ask someone s perceptions of corruption than to measure corruption. However, the validity and reliability of perception indicators as measures of corruption, they remain in fact, a reference for people and both businesses and political leaders to make decisions, enabling them to gauge the impact of corruption on the economy. Some would see as better to go in with some information rather than nothing at all. There are two competing views when discussing corruption. The first suggest that corruption creates barriers to a country s development. This is mainly seen in recent literature, for example, Rose Ackerman (1999) and Knack and Keefer (1995). The second being that corruption can be beneficial for a country s development as they can easily overcome barriers such as regulation to complete projects although this is not a popular opinion. This review mainly tackles literature from the school of thought that corruption can be harmful to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Roots Of The European Union INTRODUCTION The roots of the European Union can be traced back to the early 1950 s when a small number of countries made a decision to join together as a way to resolve any potential conflict nurture economic growth and common values across the continent. There was a desire to promote common values and membership was opened to all European countries. Since the inception the number of members has grown from a founding six countries to what we now know as the modern day EU with a current total of 28 countries with a further 8 countries under application review. Human trafficking, a form of modern slavery, is the buying and selling of people, whether it s for forced labor or commercial sex. Every year, thousands of adults and children, especially girls, are forced into the endless trafficking ring. The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally ( The Facts ). Many of these victims are sucked into the world of human trafficking because they are immigrants trying to escape to the U.S. and have debts to pay off once they get there. Trafficking happens everywhere, from big city shopping centers, to small town massage parlors. People are being captured, sold and transported across the world via various forms of transportation at all times. With updated technology, it becomes easier and easier to buy and sell these slaves and with this, the chances of being caught and punished is almost nothing. • 10. The Importance Of Teachers On The Classroom Environment In order to develop strong relationships with my students, colleagues, and parents, I plan to do a variety of little things to yield big results. The relationship that teachers have with students is vital to the classroom environment. In You ve Got to Reach Them to Teach Them, Mary Kim Schrek writes that the human encounter between teacher and student is often a more powerful teaching tool than the academic content, the grade, the data analysis, and the hours spent picking apart the curriculum (Schrek, 2011, p. 5). In order to establish such relationships, I plan to follow a four step procedure that I read about in an article by Nina Sears on the National Education Association s website. Sears article suggests that a teacher get to know their students, individualize the curriculum, watch what they say, and keep trying to reach students (Sears, 2014). As an attempt to get to know my students, I will create a little survey on the first day of school for each student to fill out; questions would include asking my students what their favorite color is or what type of books they like to read. By doing this, I will learn about my students likes and dislikes and how to use their answer in the curriculum. Individualizing the curriculum might seem like a huge undertaking but if a teacher is willing to work with the student, it is not a big deal. For example, I was an auditory learner and I had a teacher who altered the project requirements so I could write a song to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is no doubt an awe inspiring entity that invokes both great curiosity and bafflement in those who attempt to account for its existence and splendor. It is often seen as overly reductionistic, if not ¡§dangerous¡¨, to try to condense the (mindless?) brilliance of nature through any sort of mechanistic or logical means. And here we are faced with what Daniel Dennett calls Darwin¡¦s dangerous idea: ¡§that all the fruits of evolution can be explained as the products of an algorithmic process¡¨ (Dennett, 1995 p.60). It is no surprise that this idea might present a problem for the Homo sapien ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, chance and randomness might disallow for the concept of ¡§survival of the fittest¡¨ and instead allow for otherwise less adept members of the species to have increased reproducibility and thus an increased genetic impact on subsequent generations. The fact that events can alter or in part determine which members of a species are more likely to survive and reproduce, leads to the fact that the specific outcome (e.g., which particular genes will be passed onto the next generation) of an algorithmic process is not fixed, just that the inherent nature of the causal procedure is. For instance, the algorithmic process of natural selection does not provide a certain mold by which to predict the most viable members of a species, only that it is guaranteed that the most well adapted members of a species will necessarily correspond to the most viable. We now return to the question of how the complexity and intricacy of nature can be accounted for by an algorithmic process constituted by an inundation of simple steps. William Paley¡¦s well known watchmaker analogy is particularly useful here, in that it illustrates the problem of complexity of design (i.e., of a watch) independent of a purposeful designer (i.e., a watchmaker). If a watch represents a complexity in design that could not have possible arisen out of purposeless chance or randomness alone, it must therefore have required a significant amount of ¡§design work¡¨ (i.e., work done) (Dennett, ... Further, I will argue that the reasons offered for refusals regarding emergency contraception by pharmacists are not reasonable, even given their moral reservations, providers have a professional ethical obligation to dispense emergency conception. The refusal to sell emergency contraception by pharmacists ultimately infringes on women s right to exercise autonomy over their reproductive future. Over the past months, occurrences of pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions, or sell emergency contraception over the counter have drawn in significant media attention. Lawmakers at the state and federal rank have replied with an infinite number of proposals created to protect users. These proposals have been addressing the related questions of whether pharmacists should be allowed to refuse to fill valid prescriptions on moral or religious grounds, and, if so, what obligation the pharmacy has to the public when its pharmacist refuses. Lawmakers focusing on the pharmacists role and addressing the pharmacy s responsibility to users only when a pharmacist refuses to fill prescriptions fails to address a related but distinct problem that women may come across: pharmacies that, as a matter of policy, refuse to sell emergency contraception, even when they sell ordinary birth control pills. The main chemicals found in most fertilizer are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, known collectively as NPK. They are the primary nutrients found in commercial fertiliser, each playing a key role in helping the nutrition of the plant. • 19. Analysis of Mise-En-Scene in the Film American Beauty Essay How does mise en scene create meaning and provoke response in the opening of American Beauty? The opening scene of American Beauty shows a teenage girl lying in a bed, venting her feelings towards her father. In this, the audience sees her in dull clothing and colours, minimal make up and has greasy looking hair. As she sits up, her hair falls around her face and she stares directly into the camera, giving a sense of unease to the audience. The next shot is an establishing shot, showing the street where the main character, Leister, lives. Its fall/autumn time and the trees are bare or dying, possibly indicating and foreshadowing a death later on in the movie. Also the streets are very linear, all vertical and in uniform, as it were. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This opening introduces the family s lifestyle and sets the scene for the audience, from the shot following Leister s shower, the audience gets the sense that the wife is the head of the house as she gardens in a bright, contemporary looking garden. The camera goes to a close up on the rose as the woman clips it from the bush. This rose is called American Beauty which is also the name of the film. She is dressed in a plain grey suit and a clean white apron, again fitting in with the colour scheme of the interior decor. She also wears pearl earrings and a pearl necklace with her hair perfectly framing this and has impeccable make up, indicating what the perfect American housewife should resemble. She also converses with the homosexual neighbours about the secret to her roses flourishing so well; she seems happy and overly enthusiastic. The audience then see a shot of Leister, again, enclosed in an environment this time the window. The audience sees him behind the window panes, in between two bright blue shutters, indicating his isolation and loneliness within his own home. The colour blue is also an interesting choice by the director. Blue suggests calm and tranquillity within the home, and also reflects on the colour of the perfect blue sky. Leister seems to fit in as he reflects on his own life and his past happiness, and also seems unsettled within himself, contrasting to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the time that Boo or Arthur Radley was being kept in his house by his own father, many of the townspeople became almost superstitious about Boo, they would say he would walk by their own houses and scratch on their windows, one lady even said she saw him through the window others said he walks by shuffling his feet but I think with a mind like Boo he would be too scared or shy even to leave his house knowing that everyone in town was disgusted at his sight. The whole reason Boo was to be kept in his house, was he first locked Maycomb s county beadle in an outhouse then stabbed his father s leg with a pair of scissors, whether that was an accident we have no idea, but all his mother did ... Critique Of The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari Essay examples Critique Of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer, and directed by Robert Weine. It was produced in 1919 by Erich Pommer for Decla Bioscop. 1919 was a year in which the movie industry was transformed into a giant industry. Although the movie was produced in 1919, it was not released in the United States until 1921. A time when film makers were out to prove that film was indeed art. In the year 1921 525 films were released out of those 525, 50 still exist today, one of those 50 is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. When the demonic somnambulist Cesare creeps into Lil Dagover s bedchamber, director Robert Wiene was exploiting a fear common to us all. Prone and sleeping the woman is uttlerly helpless. She is carried off into the expressionist labyrinth that Wiene used to symbolize the darkest torments of the human mind and soul. A beautiful woman is carried off by evil, a play on the Beauty and the Beast themes that would become so popular in horror films. Used expressionism, films that explored dream, nightmare and psyche and that found their narrative shape determined less by action than emotion. Used angular sets and heavy shadows to develop a macabre and horrific atmosphere for its tale of murder and madness. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari intentionally uses sets that look artificial. The deliberate distortions were meant to portray what a tormented soul might perceive. German expressionism, known as dada, and surrealism rejected notions of reality, the German expressionist movement, modern art was underway. Used tilted sets, and twisted cardboard trees. Light and shadow were used to create a response, and get the viewer emotionally connected. Two films imported from Germany named Passion and Sumurun starring a popular actress named Pola Negri opened the door for other German imports. The popularity of Negri and Caligari combined helped to create a small art house market. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The one I would like to discuss is the Homestead Act of 1862. Shortly after the Indian Removal Act of 1830 was instated (moving many Native Americans off of western territories), many white individuals were hungry for more land. George Henry Evans, a labor leader in the House, felt he had a solution to the job deficit problem arising in the East. If he could provide these low income individuals with low cost or free land, it could help eliminate the issue. Most of the abolitionist were in favor of this act, feeling that it could help end issues associated with slavery and the poor. While ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Council Of Chalcedon Essay However, a diverse group ranging from the monks at Constantinople to Egyptian bishops loyal to Dioscorus opposed the definition. They considered themselves as Pro Nicene and anti Nestorian, but they worried that the council was being heretic . Ultimately, the Chalcedonian definition stated that after the incarnation, Christ was in two natures without mixture, change, division or separation . Furthermore, part of the disagreement between the Eastern and Western Church was because the definition stated that Christ is acknowledged in two natures, which come together into one person and one hypostasis. The critics (some Eastern churches) understood this to side with western Christology, they felt that it diverged from the teachings of Cyril of Alexandria who said that Christ has one nature. The church of Alexandria felt that the definition should have stated that Christ is to be acknowledged as out of two natures and not in two natures . However, some scholars argue that the language of two natures also derives from Cyril . Ultimately, the assertion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would make the doctrine of atonement null and void because it would suggest that Christians were saved by a human being leading to whether human suffering can atone for sins. In the case of Eutychianism, if Christ s humanity was swallowed up in his divinity, then the incarnation (God becoming man) did not really take place, but it seems to be more a case of man extinguished and lost in God, thereby also making the incarnation null and ... • 25. The Anti Roadway Carnage Bill Dear Citizen, My gripe is with texting and driving. This is one of the most serious public health issues of our time. I cannot for the life of me believe this practice has not yet been outlawed. Last year in the United States, driver distraction was the cause of 16% of all fatal crashes, killing 5800 people. A further 515,000 people were wounded as the result of distracted driving. The worst part is that up to 50% of teenagers the least experienced drivers on the road report texting and driving. We are teaching the next generation to drive without teaching them about responsibility. Other states have already passed laws, but our politicians are on record as saying they cannot ban something they do themselves. How irresponsible! Thankfully, Senator Jim Duncan is proposing a bill that would outlaw texting and driving. Sincerely, Concerned Activist This persuasive memo is designed to sell an idea, that texting and driving should be banned. The design put forth by Bowman (2002) is the basis of the letter. The pacing of the letter is quick, with short sentences and simple ideas. The reason for this is to generate an emotional response to help motivate the reader. • 27. Portrayal Of Women In The Odyssey The portrayal of women in society and literature is known to be sexist and male dominated. The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fagles, has similar portrayal of women and it presents women as deceiving in many cases, as well as, their subservience. From a feminist perspective, one would agree that women in The Odyssey compared to the men are deceptive and very dependent on the males in their families, including their husbands. The men, however, are demonstrated as independent and as the protectors of the household, while the women are forced to stay. To begin with, women in The Odyssey are portrayed as deceptive in several situations. For example, Circe and Odysseus men. Circe was deceiving to Odysseus men by luring them in with her voice, poisoning them, and then holding them captive (Book 10, lines 242 254). Not only were some of the women deceiving, but all women were perceived that way by men. When Hermes told Calypso, by the orders of Zeus, to let Odysseus leave she confronted him and told him to go, but he hesitated because of the thought of her deceiving him (Book 5, 125 199). Now I am willing...to send you off at last... (Book 5, line 179). Odysseus responded to Calypso by saying, Passage home? I won t set foot on a raft until you show me good faith, until you consent to swear, goddess, a binding oath you ll never plot some new intrigue to harm me! (Book 5, lines 192 199). • 28. The Future Prospects Of Norway In order to discuss the future prospects of Norway for the coming years, it is interesting and useful to review the performance of the country in the past to identify possible trends. At the end of 2013, Norway was calculated as having the second highest GDP in the world (only under Luxembourg), as it was 65,515 US dollars per capita. The following graph (Chart 1 see appendix) shows the growth in Norway s GDP from 1970. Here, we can see the effect of the recession in 2008, and how it reflected on the downfall of the GDP s value. Only until 2010 is where we see the value become even with the pre crisis number. Yet, according to Figure 1 (below), the index shows that it has not yet reached the value that it would have, following the trend prior to 2008. Figure 1. Norway s Gross Domestic Product. The graphic shows the growth of GDP for Norway in red, Luxemburg in black and the rest of the OECD countries in grey. Source: OECD, 2014 Apart from GDP, there are also other indicators that can give us an impression of the economic performance of Norway in the past years. For instance, in 2013 the long term unemployment rate was 9.3% and the overall trend suggests it may continue to go down (Appendix 1, Chart 1). This refers to those in unemployment that are aged 15 and over, were without work during the reference week, yet were available for and actively seeking for work during the previous four weeks. • 30. The First Theories Of Deism In Christianity The terms deism and theism were used interchangeably. The custom has been to use the words in a mutually exclusive sense. A number of quite divergent theological and philosophical positions are now indicated by the term deism. They resemble one another in that all reject one or more of the traditional Christian theses concerning the relationship that exits between God and universe. Deism is a theological position which accepted the supreme being as the source of finite existence, but denied the supernatural element in Christianity, as well as rejecting Christian revelation as the only way to salvation. Many different theories of deism that ruled the world. The first theory of deism is God created this universe, that all things in the universe, are directed by divine providence; and that there is a life after death in which God will reward the good and punish the evil (Carson). Divine revelation is rejected, and it is maintained that man must depend upon his reason alone to give him some knowledge of the existence and nature of God and of man s moral duties. The second theory of deism is the man is either rewarded or punished in his life; there is no future life (Carson).
