Charlie Kaufman s upcoming adaptation Harrison Bergeron takes a different approach to the
original short story. In the Vonnegut s story the year is 2081 and the world is finally equal or at
least considered to be that way. Everyone wears handicaps to suppress whatever can give them an
advantage, such as headpieces that stop a person from using their brain, weights to diminish
strength, and masks to hide beauty. The short story looks at the lives of Hazel and George

My action research project was influenced by the national push towards inclusion of children with
special needs into the general education classroom. Because our school was trying to adopt a co
teaching program, this was the area I did most of my research on. I found a multitude of studies that
supported co teaching and analyzed the effects of co teaching on students, teachers and parents. I
then researched the affects of a non inclusive environment on all students. After witnessing how my
students self esteem had plummeted due to their specific grouping, I was not surprised to find
research that supported the theory that students who are identified as having special needs will
have lower self esteem and self worth. In a study done on students with special needs, all of them
reported thinking they would be unable to attend mainstream classes because they did not feel they
were successful learners based on their placement in special education (Griffiths, 2007). This
study also revealed the children with special needs held fears that all adults would think of them
as troublemakers because the classes they were in held a high majority of children with behavior

The next day I was on the other side of the wall in the guard tower. As I was waiting for my shift to
be over I had notice someone go to the wall buy the same place that the little boy would go. It was
another guard. I was going to look through the scope of my gun but as I went to raise up my
weapon another officer came and told me I was relived of my post. I was off for a few days and
when I came back to the guard tower I sat there and waited all day for the person to go back to the

didn t even know that he had been transferred to Auschwitz. I never took him for the kind to do
that type of thing. I always thought that he was a very strict and mean guy. I later had seen him in
the mess hall. I walked up and sat right next to him. He didn t see who I was at first. I said I seen
you by the wall. He looked over and said I don t know what you re talking about. I responded yes
you do the bread and that boy every day . its okay I say I am not going to say anything to anyone.
He looked over at me and said His father was the man we killed at the train
