Iain Chalmers argues that a significant amount of medical research is wasted due to issues such as:
1) Low priority questions being addressed instead of what matters most to clinicians and patients.
2) Many studies being poorly designed and not learning from existing evidence.
3) Important results from studies often not being published or reported, leading to bias.
He advocates for greater public involvement in setting research agendas and priorities to better align research with patient and clinician needs and reduce waste estimated at over $85 billion per year. The James Lind Initiative seeks to address research waste and improve focus on shared uncertainties.

OA Week 2012 Miami U: How Open Scholarship is Changing ResearchWilliam Gunn
Open scholarship, like open source software, is changing research by making it more collaborative, efficient and sustainable. It allows research to be openly accessible and debugged more easily. Studies show much published research is not reproducible. Open scholarship provides more stakeholders and public support while potentially decreasing costs and barriers to entry over time. Sustainability models include professional services, crowdfunding and leveraging economies of scale since costs of publishing are much lower than current commercial publishers charge. The future of research is in our hands to support open access options and alternatives to impact factors.
This document discusses projects aimed at developing open educational resources (OER) through partnerships with publishers. It outlines work to create new business models that allow published materials to be incorporated risk-free into OER, as well as technical development of tools to enable assembling OER collections and sharing metadata about learning resources. The projects are funded through JISC/HEA as part of larger UK OER initiatives.
Assessments are valuable tools that provide insight for both teachers and students. From a teacher's perspective, assessments inform differentiated instruction to meet varied student needs. For students, assessments impact their learning by allowing them to understand their strengths and areas for growth.
This document discusses current trends in library design based on drivers for change such as new technologies, e-resources, and expectations of users. It outlines key considerations for interior spaces, furniture, lighting, and other factors. Art libraries in particular may require exhibition space, varied study areas, and resources for different needs. Evaluation of library design includes surveys, statistics, and identifying successes and failures to apply lessons learned. The goal is to create welcoming, flexible spaces that support new technologies and social learning while maintaining comfort.

Collections are objects that contain other objects and provide services like adding, removing, and managing elements. They can be implemented in many ways using abstract data types (ADTs) which define a standardized interface while hiding implementation details. Common collection classes in Java include ArrayList, LinkedList, sets, and maps. Dynamic data structures like linked lists can grow and shrink as needed by linking objects together through references.
