You must be registered for each semester (fall and spring) until the
semester you graduate.

You must complete
•A Registration Transaction Form (RTF, not the EZ) and
•A Research Course Request Form
These need to be signed by your advisor and the department
chairman.
Registration for Classes

For Direct Ph.D. Degree students: 54 credit hours
minimum of 18 credit hours of course work available for
graduate credit and minimum of 12 credit hours of
dissertation research credits.
For post-Master’s Ph.D. students: 18 credit hours of
course work available for graduate credit and 12 credit
hours of dissertation research credits.

Course requirements:
At least one advanced topics course. CSci courses at the 8000 level with
“Advanced” in the title satisfy this requirement. With approval of the
student’s advisor, a CSci 6907 course may also satisfy this requirement.
A maximum of 15 credits outside of the department for Direct Ph.D.
students; a maximum of 9 credits outside of the department for post-
Master’s Ph.D. students..

Preliminary Examination
Students may demonstrate competency in a course in one of two
ways:
Take the course, earning a grade of A- or better. By university
regulations, courses in which a student receives a grade of C- or
better may not be repeated for credit. So students usually may
attempt a course at most once.
Take only the written, in-class exams in the course. Students
must pass all the course’s exams during a semester, earning a grade
of A- or better. Students may typically attempt this approach twice
(per course).

Colloquium Requirements
All students must take the 0-credit Colloquium Csci 6900 course every
semester they are in residence. As part of the course, students must attend
at least two talks (colloquia, seminars, or Ph.D. student proposals or
defenses) each semester. The talks have to be in computer science or in
other fields that have a significant computational component.
Each student is required to fill out and submit the Colloquium Attendance
Form to the CS Department main office at the end of every semester.
Moreover, all PhD students are expected to attend the department
colloquium series regularly, as well as seminars in their research area and
student proposals and defenses in their group and area.. Students are to
satisfy the requirements for this course by attending five BME Department
sponsored seminars, workshops or symposia. The colloquium course

Information
The CS Department requires Ph.D. students must have at
least one peer-reviewed conference or journal paper
accepted for publication at the time of the dissertation
defense. As a guideline, students are expected to have at
least two or three conference or journal papers accepted for
publication by the time of their dissertation defense, and the
material from those papers should be the core of the
dissertation.

The I may remain on the record for a maximum of one year, but the instructor
should set a shorter period when the uncompleted work must be made up.
An incomplete that is not removed within one calendar year or at the time of
graduation of the student (whichever occurs first) is automatically changed to
an IF.
The I cannot be removed by the student’s reregistering for the course here
or taking its equivalent elsewhere.
When the I is changed to a letter grade, the I followed by the letter grade
(e.g., IB) will appear on the student’s record.
Academic Policies: Incompletes

The notation of I (Incomplete) may be recorded if a student, for reasons
beyond his or her control, is unable to complete the work of the course AND if
the instructor approves the reason before grades must be reported.
The I may be used only if the student's prior performance and class
attendance in the course have been satisfactory.
Failure to complete the work of a course that is not satisfactorily explained to
the instructor before the date when grades must be turned in will be graded F.

1. Complete a Request for Incomplete Grade form
2. Obtain the instructor’s approval
3. Return the form to 2nd Floor Graduate Student Services
