Security? It's simple. We have Security Team... Security of our environment, application, development it's their security. We follow Best Practices, we implementing their's suggestions (or not...). But maybe today, in June 2018, where GDPR is a fact, we should look a little bit more in details for the security aspects. Well know and less known risks, vulnerability assessments, secure coding, secure testing, Let's discuss: SEC/DEV/OPS/SDLC/OSSTMM/OWASP/ITIL and few other acronyms. Use freely available knowledge and specially prepared environment to check and test our security before we touch out Visual Studio, PowerShell, CLI, Visual Studio Code, or even JSON. There are multiple reasons why Open Source Software OSS is a benefit for all organisations and in particular in Public Sector. All of the organisations represented on this call will be tasked with delivering solutions for specific requirements and at great speed. Why create those solutions from generic platforms and be dependent on their long release cycles to evolve the solutions when you can develop just what is needed and then share that with other PS orgs who can modify to suit their requirements which makes for rapid development and lack of redundancy Ultimately you will be able to control your own destiny and set your own pace for delivering exactly what is needed.

Open source software presents a huge opportunity for public sector organisations in the UK. Adopting open source solutions allows assets to be shared and re-used; freeing organisations from massively expensive, inflexible “lock-in” solutions. To ensure that this potential is realised, it is imperative that organisations adopt a process for managing potential licensing, security and encryption content associated with open source code. Join us as we share our tips for streamlining the open source adoption and management process and removing uncertainties around third party software vulnerabilities.

DevOps purists may chafe at the DevSecOps term given that security and other important practices are supposed to already be an integral part of routine DevOps workflows. But the reality is that security often gets more lip service than thoughtful and systematic integration into open source software sourcing, development pipelines, and operations processes--in spite of an increasing number of threats. In this session, we’ll look at successful practices that distributed and diverse teams use to iterate rapidly. We’ll discuss how a container platform can serve as the foundation for DevSecOps in your organization. We'll also consider the risk management associated with integrating components from a variety of sources--a consideration that open source software has had to deal with since the beginning. Finally, we'll show ways by which automation and repeatable trusted delivery of code can be built directly into a DevOps pipeline.

It’s an acronym-filled issue of Open Source Insight, as we look at the question of SCA (software composition analysis) and how it fits into the DevOps environment. The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has concerning security gaps, according to its OIG (Office of Inspector General). Can the CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) gap be closed? The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is bearing down on us like a freight train, and it’s past time to include open source security into your GDPR plans. Plus, an intro to the Open Hub community, looking at security for blockchain apps, and best practices for open source security in container environments are all featured in this week’s cybersecurity and open source security news.

Patching software is a constant challenge. The Equifax hack and subsequent FTC investigation has shown us that required patches aren’t limited to those published by commercial vendors. Open source updates are just as critical; tracing new vulnerabilities and updates to applications in which those components are used isn’t just a good practice, it’s a regulatory requirement. A focused approach to managing open source risk is essential as the legal landscape quickly evolves, including requirements under the FTC Act, HIPAA, and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Coupled with heightened regulatory enforcement, these requirements increase the pressures on companies to maintain data privacy and security. This session will cover common misconceptions about these requirements, and explain why open source management is essential to your overall security strategy.

John Whited, Principal Engineer, Raytheon Software Assurance Software Assurance (SwA) is also known by many other names -- application security, software security, secure application development, and others. The numbers vary from study to study, but a vast majority of cyber-attacks at least involve an element of attack on one or more software applications. Fundamentally, SwA provides a level of confidence that software is free from vulnerabilities, either intentionally designed into the software or accidentally inserted at any time during its lifecycle, and that the software functions in the intended manner. SwA is a development lifecycle endeavor requiring the participation of many disciplines. This presentation will explore some of the best practices in secure software development across its lifecycle.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an exciting and emerging area of technology allowing individuals and businesses to make radical changes to how they live their lives and conduct commerce. The challenge with this trend is that IoT devices are just computers with sensors running applications. Because IoT devices interact with our personal lives, the proliferation of these devices exposes an unprecedented amount of personal sensitive data to significant risk. In addition, IoT security is not only about the code running on the device, these devices are connected to systems that include supporting web services as well as other client applications that allow for management and reporting. A critical step to understanding the security of any system is building a threat model. This helps to enumerate the components of the system as well as the paths that data takes as it flows through the system. Combining this information with an understanding of trust boundaries helps provide system designers with critical information to mitigate systemic risks to the technology and architecture. This webinar looks at how Threat Modeling can be applied to IoT systems to help build more security systems during the design process, as well as how to use Threat Modeling when testing the security of IoT systems.

Pentesting has been around for decades, but with the technology evolution we’ve seen radical changes in today’s networks, including ubiquitous encryption, the death of the traditional network perimeter, and the advent of new end point devices, including a myriad of IoT devices. CompTIA’s chief technology evangelist Dr James Stanger on how pentesting has morphed, and you’ll learn the relevant skills that a pen tester should have today, how organizations use a pen tester, and how to usefully “digest” information gained from a pen test. Other topics covered include how the IT environment has changed radically in the last five years, pentesting challenges DoD agencies face today, responsible pen testing and the hacker lifecycle as well understanding the “hacker’s dilemma”. There's also a demo of responsible pentesting. For more information on CompTIA training, visit https://www.globalknowledge.com/us-en/training/course-catalog/brands/comptia/

As presented at Open Source Open Standards (GovNet) (http://opensourceconference.co.uk/), this deck covers some of the material which operators of open source data centers and users of container and cloud technologies should be aware of when seeking to be security conscious. Traditionally, when datacentre operators talk about application security, there has been a tendency to focus on issues related to key management, firewalls and data access. By contrast, application developers have a security focus which is more aligned with code analysis and fuzzing techniques. The reality is, secure application deployment principles extend from the infrastructure layer through the application and include how the application is deployed. With the prevalence of continuous deployment, it’s imperative to focus efforts on what attackers’ view as vulnerable; particularly in an environment where new exploits are being disclosed almost daily. In this session we’ll present: - How known vulnerabilities can make their way into production deployments - How vulnerability impact is maximized - A methodology for ensuring deployment of vulnerable code can be minimized - A methodology to minimize the potential for vulnerable code to be redistributed

Presented August 11, 2016 by Michael Right, Senior Product Manager, HPE Security Fortify; Mike Pittenger, VP of Security Strategy, Black Duck. Open source software is an integral part of today’s technology ecosystem, powering everything from enterprise and mobile applications to cloud computing, containers and the Internet of Things. While open source offers attractive economic and productivity benefits for application development, it also presents organizations with significant security challenges. Every year, thousands of new open source security vulnerabilities – such as Heartbleed, Venom and Shellshock – are reported. Unfortunately, many organizations lack visibility into and control of their open source. Addressing this challenge is vital for ensuring security in applications and containers. Whether you’re building software for customers or for internal use, the majority of the code is likely open source and securing it is no easy task. In this session, you’ll learn about: • The evolving DevOps and software security assurance lifecycle in the age of open source • The software security considerations CISOs, security, and development teams must address when using open source • An automated approach to identifying vulnerabilities and managing software security assurance for custom and open source code.

Everything you really need to know about IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems) Combining with HoneyPots. Deployment and usage techniques used in the past and today. How to setup and deploy onto any network including the cloud. Reasons why this should be used in all networks. How to bring BIG DATA down to Small Data that is easy to understand and monitor. It’s all over the news that data breaches occur daily! I asked WHY these hackers can download terabytes of data in timespans of months without being noticed. What are these companies paying their SOC team millions of dollars for? How come all the money is going to devices to prevent breaches and little to none in detecting when they occur? Don’t people know there are only two types of companies “those that been hacked, and those that don’t know they been hacked”. What can I do to detect a breach within seconds on any network scale? I think I figured it out. In my talk you’ll learn how you and your clients can benefit by applying my exclusive techniques, which I’ve successfully deployed. So the next time you get hacked the hacker would not be able to steal all those credit cards and photos of that Halloween party.

In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?
