6. Chitral
Chitral is the largest district in the Khyber-
Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, covering an area of
14,850 km. It is the northernmost district of Pakistan.
It shares a border with Gilgit-Baltistan to the east, with
Kunar, Badakshan and Nuristan provinces to the north
and west, and with Swat and Dir to the south. A
narrow strip of Wakhan Corridor separates Chitral
from Tajikistan in the north.

Organizations (NGOs) are operating in Chitral
focusing on the education, social, heath and other
major sectors.

Development Project (CADP) and Sarhad Rural
Support Program (SRSP) are enormous

15. Sarhad Rural Support Programme
(SRSP)
Sarhad Rural Support Programme( SRSP) is a non profit
company/ non government organisation registered
under Company's Law, working in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa and parts of FATA. Its based on the
rural support programme( RSP) approach to
community empowerment and economic and
livelihood development. It was established in 1989.
16. PEACE (Funded by EU)
Programme for Economic Advancement and
Community Empowerment (PEACE) is a four years
project implemented in district chitral with the
financial support of European Union.
SRSP through (peace) worked on the following field.
17. Community Institution Building and Youth
Development
Community Institutions are inclusive institutions that
bring together all members of the community. SRSP
builds the capacity of these organizations through
community activist and leadership training. The
project has formed over 6198 Community Institutions
including 1470 Women Community Institutions.
19. These institutions have a collective membership of
over 130,021 people. Over 23000 Community members
trained in community and leadership management
skills. 247 Events held for personal and social
development benefiting
20. Renewable Energy through
Community Involvement
PEACE is developing renewable energy in remote
locations through setting micro hydro units ranging
from 50 KV to 500 Kv.
21. SRSP with EU support plans to install 240 micro-
hydro projects with an installed capacity of 21 MW.
This benefit over 75200 households
22. Community Built Infrastructure
SRSP with EU support is constructed link roads,
bridges, drinking water projects, irrigation canals and
also rebuilding and improving government
infrastructure of schools and hospitals etc.
23. PEACE is empowering women
through capacity building, economic empowerment,It
is imparting Literary and Numerical skills to over 6000
women in 240 adult literacy centers. So far 133 adult
literacy centers have been established benefiting over
3,232 women.
24. The programme has trained 455 women in managerial
skills and 3,050 women in livelihood skills
25. Growth of Economic Activities
The project identifies sectors with potential to add to
the economic growth activities of the area. Rice seed,
onion seed, ,pear etc. 170 business interest groups
formed around these trades with a membership of
2702 farmers
26. 1296 farmers trained in development through this
project. Over 800 producers trained in enterprise
development. Around 1420 Farmers provided with
economic support under this programme
27. Aga Khan Rural Support
Program(AKRSP)
AKRSP is involved in community infrastructure
development in Chitral since 1982. They have initiated
more than 2,000 projects , for benefit of 130,000
households. Out of these 1,980 projects have been
completed. The projects include mainly irrigation
schemes, roads, bridges, flood protection , drinking
water supply.
28. WASEP
The Water and Sanitation Extension Programme
(WASEP) has benefited over 90,000 people in 12,000
households in the region.
The collaboration of the German government and Aga
Khan Development Network (AKDN) has not only
helped improved lives by providing safe drinking water
and sanitation facilities, but also benefited people
through the installation of over 10,000 latrines, around
12,000 household tap stands and over 500 communal
taps

outreach through more than 1,500 School Health
Improvement Programmes (SHIP) and 1,300
Community Health Improvement Programmes (CHIP)
were launched.
31. Aga Khan Education Service
The Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan is amongst
the largest private network of education institutions in
chitral as well as in pakistan. It operates 100+ schools
and 4 hostels and supports over 200 community based
initiatives spread across various regions of chitral.
These institutions provide education to over 55,000
students.

standard of chitali people among them some of the

35. Lowari Tunnel
Lowari Tunnel is an 8.75 km (5.45 mi.) long under-
construction road tunnel situated in the Khyber-
Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan connecting Dir and
Chitral Valley.
38. Work on the tunnel began on Sept 8, 1975 but it was
stopped in 1977 after change of the government on the
pretext of lack of funds and other development
priorities. The work did not resume until Sept 2005.
The tunnel will reduce the current 11-hour drive from
Chitral to Peshawar by 30 per cent.
39. Moreover, people of Chitral have to travel through
Afghanistan and then enter back into Pakistan during
the winter season when Lowari Top is closed for traffic.
Chitral remains virtually inaccessible during winter
and the tunnel will facilitate all-weather
transportation.
40. Golen Gol Hydropower Project
Golen Gol Hydropower Plant is an under
construction hydroelectric generation project located
on Golen Gol River, a major left tributary of Mastuj
River in Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
province of Pakistan.
42. Golen Gol Hydropower Project is a run-of-the-river
project designed for the generation of 108 MW
consisting of three vertical Pelton wheel turbine units
in one phase. Golen Gol Hydropower Project is a part
of least-cost energy generation plan, being executed by
WAPDA to harness the indigenous hydropower
resources of the country.
