VERBAL & NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATIONS
 ‘Verbal’ is the Latin adjective of ‘word’.
 So verbal communication means
communicating with words, whether written
or spoken.
 More personal & informal.
 Makes immediate impact.
 Provides opportunity for interaction &
feedback.
 Helps us correct our messages according to the
feedback & non-verbal cues from the listener.
 It is very fast & non-expensive.
 A word once uttered can’t be taken back.
 Impact may be short lived.
 It can be forgotten easily.
 There is no legal evidence of oral
communication.
 Improving Your Nonverbal Skills and Reading
Body Language
 It's well known that good communication is the
foundation of any successful relationship, be it
personal or professional. It's important to
recognize, though, that it's our nonverbal
communication—our facial expressions, gestures,
eye contact, posture, and tone of voice—that speak
the loudest. The ability to understand and use
nonverbal communication, or body language, is a
powerful tool that can help you connect with
others, express what you really mean, and build
better relationships.
 Non verbal communication is defined as “the
process of using wordless messages to generate
meaning”.
 The use of non-verbal communication can
create a whole new meaning to a message.
 Non-verbal communication includes all
unwritten & unspoken messages, both
intentional & unintentional.
 For being an excellent communicator, person needs to
augment his/her verbal expressions with non-verbal ones.
 Nonverbal communication describes the process of shared
cues between people, which goes hand-in-hand with public
speaking. This can include eye contact, frequency of glances,
blink rate, gestures, facial expressions, postures, and more.
 The presentation is, perhaps, the one mode of
communication that has proved relevant through every
technological innovation. Our decks get more glamorous,
but it’s still just you on stage, in front of an audience.
Nonverbal signals can increase trust, clarity, and add
interest to your presentation when yielded properly.
Learning how to become more sensitive to body language
and nonverbal cues will make you the best presenter you
can be.
 Non-verbal communication flows through all
acts, of speaking or writing.
 In fact, they are wordless messages.
 It is a creative activity, which comes through
stimuli produced by mind.
 The usage of non-verbal communication can
clearly even the toughest message to
understand.
 Sometimes, non-verbal cues can be more
meaningful than the words themselves.
 There are many different types of non-verbal
communication. Together, the following non-verbal signals
& cues communicate your interests & investments in others.
 Facial expressions
 Body movements & postures
 Gestures
 Eye-contact
 Touch
 Space
 Voice
 Paralinguistic
 Proxemics (Personal space)
 Haptics (Touch language)
 Artifacts
 Noise
 Assumptions/misconceptions
 Inappropriate medium
 Language differences
 Emotions
 Poor listening skills
 Distractions
Although verbal communication is easier to
understand , non-verbal communication is
essential to understand not only a message,
but more importantly, the feelings behind
the message.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
 Verbal communication is
face-to-face conversation
between people. It includes
sounds, words, or speaking.
Tone of voice, volume, and
pitch are all ways to
effectively communicate
verbally.
 Language barriers
sometimes affect
communication. American
gestures mean different
things in different countries.
It's important to be aware of
these different meanings
when traveling or working
with people from a different
culture.
 Nonverbal communication
includes gestures, facial
expressions, body movement,
timing, touch, and anything else
done without speaking. People
seem to notice nonverbal
communication more than verbal.
For this reason, it's important to
control yourself nonverbally.
 Nonverbal combined with verbal
communication can be interpreted
in different ways. People may
seemed very confused if someone
is speaking politely while
swearing at them. Usually
people's verbal communication
signals their mood.
Communication can either be seen
as passive or agressive depending
on both verbal and nonverbal
clues.
 What is nonverbal communication and body
language?
 Why nonverbal communication matters
 How nonverbal communication can go wrong
 Why Nonverbal communication can’t be
faked
