2. Melanie Adele Martinez is a 22 year old American singer who creates music
for the alternative genre.
She’s quite unique when it comes to her appearance as in many of her
music videos and in concert she typically opts for a very heavy makeup look
with bright or dyed hair and childish apparel and she has also used her
quirky front tooth gap to further the idea of her individuality. In her first
music video she created her ‘crybaby’ persona that influences the majority
of her music content and her sense of style as many of her clothes
resemble that of a child. As her style is so unusual it has almost become
iconic and it is one of the main aspects of her persona that she is
recognised.

3. • Martinez first appeared on the American version of the singing show ‘The Voice’
where she was chosen to be on Adam Levine’s team and made it to the final 6 before
she was eliminated. Soon after she went on to make her own music video for her
debut song ‘Doll House’ which she wrote herself and also helped film some parts of.
As she had a very large popularity vote on ‘The Voice’ her song quickly became
popular after release and she was quickly signed with Atlantic Records.
• Her song ‘Doll House’ is her second best selling song to date and earned it platinum
certification with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
• When Martinez went on ‘The Voice’ she was only in junior year of high school (so
year 11 in England) meaning that her only career has been music or being a student.
• During the live rounds of ‘The Voice’ Melanie had two songs- "Seven Nation Army“
by The White Stripes and "Too Close“ by Alex Clare -that reached the top 10 of the
iTunes. This means her songs were enjoyed and accessible to a majority audience,
however once she started writing her own songs they were more tailored to the
genre of indie music as her songs talk about more serious issues that most popular
music. That being said her debut song ‘Doll House’ has been viewed over 100 million
times on Youtube.
