This document provides steps for shooting great news video. It outlines planning the video, conducting interviews, and shooting interviews. 2. Step 1: Planning
✤ Figure out your goal. Write it down if you have to
✤ Sketch out a brief outline - what is the general flow of the story?
✤ Who do you need/want to interview?
✤ What equipment do you need? (Test it ahead of time!)
✤ What access do you need (Do you need to call your subject for a “pre
interview” or get access to a business?)
✤ Do you need a friend to help you shoot the video?

3. Step 2: The Interview
✤ Dress appropriately
✤ Hook up mic early - before you get going
✤ Establish rapport - spell out names/titles!
✤ Explain what you’re doing and why
✤ When they go off your script, explore it
✤ Don’t be shy - ask them to repeat things
✤ Thank them for helping out!

5. Shooting an interview
✤ Use a tripod or monopod!
✤ If possible, use two cameras to get an extra angle
✤ Be sure lighting is how you want it. Shadows will be accentuated on
film, overexposures will be worse than you expected.
✤ Be sure audio is set up - lavalier mics are the best, but be sure audio is
good. It’s actually best to use headphones attached to audio source
✤ Use the rule of thirds
