1. Procrastinator
Even though I may be a procrastinator, procrastinating is an effective tool. During school you get
assigned a lot of assignments, some may be over fall break or even Christmas break. The best thing
to do is to do your assignments as soon as you can and then the rest of your break is free time. When
I get assigned something, I always tell myself, I am going to get it done before I do anything else, if
not I will forget and have to do all my work on a Sunday before we go back to school. Not only can
you be a procrastinator in school, but also when you have dentist and doctor appointments. "You
even procrastinate when it comes to dieting, saving money, and sending important emails. In the first

"I have a ton of homework to do, but let's go hang out anyways!" This is an example of
procrastination. Procrastinating is an action of delaying or postponing something. The problems of
procrastinating effects a lot of students in college and can sometimes keep them from receiving
better grades on their assignments. Procrastination affects around 90 percent of college students. (qtd
in Hubbard) Procrastinating occurs when students feel lack of motivation, not having accountability
for their "extra work," or just not understanding the assignment. Many college students are under ton
of stress and tend to delay working on assignments to ease the stress. This habit results in
procrastination. Procrastination affects many people, so how do we...show more content...
In one of the studies, college students were given a biography to read that was made for a more
advanced student. The biography was set up so that the reader had the same birthday as the author,
for some participants. For other participants, the biography was setup so that the author's birthday
was a few months away from theirs. After reading through the article and having to answer
comprehensive questions, the students that had the same birthday as the author shown to have better
understanding of the biography, as well as answering the questions correctly. The students who had
further birthdays experienced negative feelings towards the classroom while the other students felt
positive. (qtd in Markman) This study shows us that small things like having the same birthday as
someone else gives people motivation. When working together with a few other people from your
class to study for an exam, you can seek motivation from your peers. Your peers can guide you
through your assignments as well as grow into a cohesive relationship if they allow it. This creates a
warmer bond between students and helps them be comfortable with their environment, just like the
students felt positive during their class period after reading a biography by someone with the same
birthday as them. Therefore, study groups can

3. Cause and Effect -- Procrastination Essay
Procrastination "I'll stop procrastinating...Tomorrow." This is a mindset that is possessed by a
majority of students today. Although putting off writing that English paper until the night before it
is due may not seem like a big deal, it has many harmful effects. In fact, what better topic is there
for that English paper? Very few are spared from the epidemic known asprocrastination. Even less
overcome this issue. In order to successfully defeat procrastination, we must first understand it.
According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, to procrastinate is "to put off intentionally the doing
of something that should be done." Another way of putting it is "to wait until the last minute."
Procrastination is a very bad habit. Even though...show more content...
With that being said, being overwhelmed certainly does not help. This can lead to forgetting
important details and due dates. Another factor that causes procrastination is fear. Fear is a very
powerful emotion. Whenever someone is faced with a difficult task, they can become overran by
the fear of not being able to complete it. People who succumb to this are setting themselves up for
failure. Whenever someone feels as if they are going to fail, they tend to postpone the task for as
long as possible. This means that they often try to avoid the task all together until completion is
absolutely necessary. In doing so, the number of tasks that need to be done increases. However, the
time required to complete them does not. Perfectionism can also lead to procrastination. This is
because a person is setting a goal for themselves that is unreachable. Whenever these goals are not
met, they are a huge source of discouragement even though they couldn't have been completed in
the first place. This will result in lower productivity. From here, it is nothing but a downward
spiral. One must realize that no one can write the perfect English paper. Instead of trying to
accomplish this, we should focus our time and effort on writing the best paper according to our
personal abilities. However, no one should be satisfied with less than what can be achieved. All of
these factors lead to the lack of motivation. Personally, I

every aspect of our lives.

I will do it later. I will do it tomorrow. I will start it on Monday. Oh, I'll get to it next week. If you

ticket, doing laundry or organizing your closet, we've all put certain things off. Procrastinators live
in a constant state of denial not thinking about the long term consequences. As tempting and easy as
it is, avoidance always catches up. An example, making changes in your diet right away and not
saying you will start till Monday.
C.Statement of Third Main Point
There is a certain irony with procrastination, things we put off doing accumulate to the point of in
manageability and feelings of anxiety increase which, is why we procrastinate anyway.
Here are some tips to help break the procrastination habit:
Make a list everything that needs to get done and keep it in a viewable area that you use a lot. Like
your refrigerator or your desktop on your computer.
Give yourself a break. Life can be quiet hard. To be balancing a career with family and finances
with free time can be challenging.
Set small goals and reward yourself for obtaining them.
Create new habits. If you are the type of person that waits until the last minute to pay your bills
maybe setting a reminder for yourself to pay them on time every month will

To procrastinate is to put off doing something out of casual carelessness or common laziness. It
often needlessly postpones or delays events or objectives in your life which can effect others.
Procrastination is almost like a drug in your life, because once you start doing it a little bit, it
slowly adds up to a dependency that you will find to be common habit. Although this is what we all
perceive procrastination to be bad, there are some benefits to it. It can have beneficial impact on
how you take pressure, or how well you can act when time is limited.

But it will progressively add up in most cases, the student will start to not study like they know
they should be, but rather they go and do something else that isn't as beneficial. After a while that
people start to do this they think its not bad, even thought they are missing a few points here and
there from lowered studies and completed work. But it can eventually lean up to skipping classes,
which is one of the worse things you can do while in college, since generally there are no make
ups for missed assignments and test. This can then hurt your grades entirely, and therefore may
have you retake certain classes or take another year. This in turn can cause financial problems if it
where to happen on multiple occasions, then can effect your later life on paying off the bills or
charges that were made from it.
Procrastination is not always a very bad thing though; there are some points in your life that it
could prove to be a plus. If done enough you will be use to doing things last minute, which could
possibly help you in your career with handling pressure when you boss tells you do something
within a set amount of time. Also extended amounts of doing this bad habit could help you learn to
take pressure better, as example when you have a huge paper due by the next morning and you
need to keep your self calm or else it will show when your writing the paper. Even though these

Procrastination is ignoring your responsibilities and avoiding them for no good reason. Experiencing
procrastination can have a positive or negative reaction according to the amount of the behavior. The
person that is procrastinating must first realize that they have a problem in order to find ways to
overcome procrastination because they are putting their health, family and job at risk. Twenty
percent of people realize they are procrastinators which in the end becomes a lifestyle. There are
various reasons why people procrastinate.
People procrastinate because they are afraid to fail, they have poor time management, they avoid
things that seem difficult or they feel depressed or they feel guilty. Some people believe that other

it is due and then they will have an excuse saying, "I restarted because I didn't like what I had

time even exists, and Einstein believed that time was a muddle in which the past, present and future
were only illusions.
First, a person must be honest with themselves and recognize that they are procrastinating. After

When you conquer procrastination, you will learn what it is, how it happens and finally experience
success by not allowing it to happen again.
Procrastination happens when a task is put off until a later time because the task is not desirable.
There are several reasons procrastination happens including, confusion and misunderstanding exactly
what needs done and how to do it. Procrastination causes lack of production, loss of time, and
decrease in revenue. "Procrastination is one main cause of poor management, lost productivity, and
lost revenue" (Ricci, 2004).

on the easier tasks. If a task is too large to complete in one setting, break it down into several
smaller tasks. Maintain discipline by not stopping until the task is complete. Allowing interruptions
at specific times will reduce the number of distractions. Organization skills are depended on to
achieve tasks easier. Creating a tidy work area will produce a positive environment. Brainstorming
can be an incredible process and give the ability to list everything that a specific task requires.
Imagine yourself doing the task and speak to yourself. Talking to yourself could result in a positive
reaction and prevent procrastination from becoming a habit. Following through and force the
completion of a task will fend falling into an unmanageable practice.
Finding a motivational reward may help to become successful in beating procrastination. Receiving
a reward at the end of small tasks will encourage the completion of the rest of the tasks, which will
in turn accomplish goals. Mistakes are not bad they are a learning tool. Without making mistakes,
the same result would happen repeatedly. Prepare for the worst possible outcome and find a
reasonable solution.
Defeat procrastination by learning what it is, how it happens and experience victory by not allowing
it to become a habit. Following simple steps

9. Many people believe that procrastination is derived completely from laziness but the culprit could be
multiple things, including perfectionism. This can become a huge problem for perfectionists,
especially perfectionist students. They most likely will overthink projects and put off getting started
because they're afraid they won't be able to make them as perfect as they want them to be. Luckily
this is a common issue among students and there are many different techniques to cope with it.
Students can overcome procrastination due to perfectionism by setting S.M.A.R.T goals, creating
detailed to–do lists, and by just getting started. Students can avoid procrastination by following the
S.M.A.R.T. goal guidelines. All of your goals should be specific (s), measurable (m), achievable (a),
realistic (r), and time–sensitive (t). A specific goal is clear, focused, concise, and well–defined
("Ensure Your Success"). Instead of a general goal like "I want to get my degree," turn that into
something more specific like "I am going to get my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration
from George Mason University" ("Ensure Your Success"). To make goals measurable, establish
timelines and dates so you can measure your progress and stay on track to meet targets. Goals
need to be achievable. Evaluate your own work ethic, see what you're willing to do, and shape your
goal around that so you know it is something you're capable of doing. A goal needs to be realistic,

5. Though I've only touched on a couple, there are many more reasons for procrastinating such as
fear of anxiety or failure and even personnel or financial problems. So, you might be asking, how do
I know if I'm a procrastinator or not? Well, this brings me to my second point, symptoms of
procrastination. One of the worst aspects of procrastination is postponement. When one is
postponing an important task, it becomes very difficult to enjoy recreational activities. One is
socializing with friends or watching a film, and there is this nagging thought, "I should be
working." A dark cloud of guilt hangs over your head and dampens any pleasure you might be
extracting from the distractions of the moment. So, by not getting things done in a reasonably and

12. Causes Of Procrastination
Introduction Every student sets goals and deadlines to get their work done on time, but some wait
until the last minute. As the grade level increases, the work load and difficulty increases, leading to
more procrastination. Most students in high school procrastinate, and the question is, why? Is the
work too hard? Do their teacher's leniency cause them to? Do students not have enough time? Do
extra–curricular activities take up too much of their time? There has been many other research
studies on this topic, but I wanted to see if the students in my survey and interviews had any
different correlations. Because I am a senior in high school with a heavy work load and limited time,
I struggle with procrastinating. The purpose of my research is to see if other people have the same
problems I do getting my work done. I asked questions that relate to myself including
extra–curricular actives and home lives. I wanted to see if my home life and extra–curricular
activities caused my procrastination as well as my fellow class mates. I wondered if everyone had the
same reasons or if everyone had their own unique cause of procrastination. Literature Review In my
study, laziness is the most common reason student procrastinate. Timothy A Pychyl, a professor who
specializes in the study of procrastination says "procrastinators often remark that they lack the
motivation necessary to act. They have an intention to act, but they fail to act in a timely fashion

If this is the case, begin at the beginning, with the first segment, and do it extraordinarily well. But
only strive for perfection where it counts. The rest of the time, just do it. Remember, the next time
you're procrastinating and can't seem to overcome it, stop and figure out why. Is the task even worth
doing? If so, pick the appropriate solution based upon the root cause and you'll whittle away those
piles in no time.
Also procrastination can be stopped if you recognize self–defeating problems such as fear and
anxiety, difficulty concentrating, poor time management, indecisiveness and perfectionism. Identify
your own goals, strengths and weaknesses, values and priorities. Compare your actions with the
values you feel you have. Are your values consistent with your actions?
Discipline yourself to use time wisely: Set priorities. Study in small blocks instead of long time
periods. For example, you will accomplish more if you study/work in 60 minute blocks and take
frequent 10 minute breaks in between, than if you study/work for 2–3 hours straight, with no breaks.
Reward yourself after you complete a task. Motivate yourself to study: Dwell on success, not on
failure. Try to study in small groups. Break large assignments into small tasks. Keep a reminder
schedule and checklist. Set realistic goals. Modify your environment: Eliminate or minimize noise
/ distraction. Ensure adequate lighting. Have necessary equipment at hand.

People often relate procrastination to lazy people, adamantly believing that it leads to inevitable
failure. With Countless of articles , books & guides on how to get over procrastination , The Author
John Rampton in his article "Procrastination or Contemplation?" chose to spark off a debate by
issuing his ideas on how procrastination can actually be fruitful. Rampton states the bright side of
procrastination and how it can lead to success rather than the common negative myths about this
issue. As much as I was convinced by Mr.Rampton's ideas, I still refuse to believe in them. Mr.
Rampton, you give me no guarantees.
In this article John Rampton listed some of the positive aspects of procrastination, although some of
them were both logical and relatable but the non–credibility of the sources weakened them & made
them less convincible. What made his article engaging is that the ideas he introduced were relatable
to the majority. As a procrastinator myself , i found his definition of Procrastination quite interesting
where he said "procrastination is using fear as a motivator" , its actually true that we finish some

I have many flaws, one of which being procrastination. Procrastination has been a flaw of mine

To stop procrastination it is necessary to have a time plan, and estimate how long an assignment
will take. Remember that your priority is the assignment that it is due first. A good idea is to

Here are some helpful hints to help you stop procrastinating.
 Have positive statements around your room.
 Use a timer.
 Get all materials in place before you start.
 Get started!

As you can see procrastination is a problem to students since it will get in the way of their
schoolwork. As I said before procrastination is to put things off for later, and this is why it gets in the
way. I have talked about the different studies, stopping procrastination and some helpful hints.
Hopefully this paper will open the minds of most students out there and prevent them from

Have any of you ever procrastinated before? If the answer was yes, you would not be the only one.
We all procrastinate from time to time. Statistics showed that procrastination affects over 20 percent
of the population, and 85 to 95 percent of students have problems associated with procrastination.
All the time, not doing the important task when we know we should can lead to anxiety, guilt,
stress, and even depression. In the reality, the activities we were doing while procrastinating are
never fun or relaxing because we know we should be doing work. So, procrastination is so horrific,
then why do we do it? Therefore, today, there are two subtopics procrastination that I want to talk
about which are the reasons why we procrastinate and some strategies on how to avoid it.
Now, let's talk about what makes us procrastinate. There are three broad categories that most of
typical reasons for procrastination could fall into which are resentment, fear of success, and fear of
failure. First, how does procrastination express resentment? Taking away autonomy from people who
think they are competent can cause procrastination due to dissatisfaction. For example, in the
workplace, you may procrastinate when you feel your job doesn't allow enough autonomy, when
you don't see the significance of your contribution, when you don't get much feedback about your
work, or when you feel frustrated, resentful, or bored with a task. Also, the feeling of gaining
