How has CALL enhanced teaching/learning
    opportunities in your classroom?

So far, it has fulfilled the following roles in my class:
1) A place to aggregate weekly content and class
announcements(via class website)
2) A collection of online English learning resources
3) An asynchronous collaboration tool (via voicethread and
typewith.me)
4) Listening jigsaw assignments (youtube)
5) Presentation tools (Prezi and Powerpoint)
6) Video production tools (jaycut, iMovie)
7) Content source (e.g. news websites, TEDx, TV shows)

I have used not used anything from CALL in my classroom
yet but I probably will for practicum.

Well, I have integrated various tools like creating class
bookmarks, podcasts, typewith.me, and focused on learning
the essentials. It has made class more interesting and has
really promoted learner autonomy. I think a lot of this is
reflected in my position paper, actually! I integrate
technology into my sample lesson

On the very basic level, I used YouTube videos to provide
students with authentic input.Also, in my language learning
experience I made use of language learning networks like
livemocha.In the future I would like to interest my students
in doing technologically rich language projects.

For my BUILD Cantonese and Japanese class, I created a
Googlesite that allows me to keep files and resources for my
students. Not only do put my lesson plan on the website to
use during my class, I put useful resources and soft-copies
of my handouts so my students will have access to the
information even at home.

Build, student, build budget, internet provides free tools for
students, home cooking, chau su, “god of cookery”…..helped
design of materials, windows photostory, listening
assessment, first time created video(opportunity), anvil
tools online, sharing of resources, save all work to google
docs/drop box, easy to share with students…Access to
authentic materials…

Experiment with new ideas such as games in language teaching,
virtual worlds such as second life, and tools that I had a working
knowledge of such as Skype, but not very experienced with using
in Education. I also used sites called busuu & mixxer for finding
language partners. These sites help build autonomy, give
students practice outside of the classroom, and provide
alternative options to plaftforms such as Skype and Gchat.

There are many tools are out there that can enhance an
educator's reportoire for meeting the needs of the learner.
However, that doesn't mean that every tool is appropriate for
every learner. Jumping in too quickly will lead to a mismatch of
student needs and may make a tool not the right vehicle at the
right time.

 I guess with my Language Teacher Education course, it was
solely online – which I would not have been able to take
otherwise. The online platform allowed me to travel and
access the classroom remotely, which was extremely
beneficial.

I think so. It increased my sensitivity in getting materials
that I can use for my classroom even when I’m just using
technology (social media) for personal use. I’ve realized
that CALL doesn’t have to be really tech-savvy teaching
practices , but instead, it really depends on what you can do
with the materials presented on the internet or what you
can have students do with the help of technology.

CALL Perspectives Question 3

  • 1. Q#3 How has CALL enhanced teaching/learning opportunities in your classroom?
  • 2. Andrew So far, it has fulfilled the following roles in my class: 1) A place to aggregate weekly content and class announcements(via class website) 2) A collection of online English learning resources 3) An asynchronous collaboration tool (via voicethread and typewith.me) 4) Listening jigsaw assignments (youtube) 5) Presentation tools (Prezi and Powerpoint) 6) Video production tools (jaycut, iMovie) 7) Content source (e.g. news websites, TEDx, TV shows)
  • 3. Afiwa I have used not used anything from CALL in my classroom yet but I probably will for practicum.
  • 4. Heidi Well, I have integrated various tools like creating class bookmarks, podcasts, typewith.me, and focused on learning the essentials. It has made class more interesting and has really promoted learner autonomy. I think a lot of this is reflected in my position paper, actually! I integrate technology into my sample lesson
  • 5. Kamila On the very basic level, I used YouTube videos to provide students with authentic input.Also, in my language learning experience I made use of language learning networks like livemocha.In the future I would like to interest my students in doing technologically rich language projects.
  • 6. Karen For my BUILD Cantonese and Japanese class, I created a Googlesite that allows me to keep files and resources for my students. Not only do put my lesson plan on the website to use during my class, I put useful resources and soft-copies of my handouts so my students will have access to the information even at home.

Robin Build, student, build budget, internet provides free tools for students, home cooking, chau su, “god of cookery”…..helped design of materials, windows photostory, listening assessment, first time created video(opportunity), anvil tools online, sharing of resources, save all work to google docs/drop box, easy to share with students…Access to authentic materials…
  • 8. Celia Experiment with new ideas such as games in language teaching, virtual worlds such as second life, and tools that I had a working knowledge of such as Skype, but not very experienced with using in Education. I also used sites called busuu & mixxer for finding language partners. These sites help build autonomy, give students practice outside of the classroom, and provide alternative options to plaftforms such as Skype and Gchat. There are many tools are out there that can enhance an educator's reportoire for meeting the needs of the learner. However, that doesn't mean that every tool is appropriate for every learner. Jumping in too quickly will lead to a mismatch of student needs and may make a tool not the right vehicle at the right time.
  • 9. Alicia I guess with my Language Teacher Education course, it was solely online – which I would not have been able to take otherwise. The online platform allowed me to travel and access the classroom remotely, which was extremely beneficial.
  • 10. Angelica I think so. It increased my sensitivity in getting materials that I can use for my classroom even when I’m just using technology (social media) for personal use. I’ve realized that CALL doesn’t have to be really tech-savvy teaching practices , but instead, it really depends on what you can do with the materials presented on the internet or what you can have students do with the help of technology.
