Reading And Reflection Essay
For as long as I can remember on the first day of class no matter what class it seems that the
teacher would always look upon the class and ask what our personal definition of reading and
writing or why we were in the class and people always seem to give the same hesitant answer
every year. I thought I knew why I in the class, I assumed it was like high school english as long
as I stuck to the formula that was engraved in our minds that I would have no trouble making it
though the course. However, after the first day of class i knew that this class probably wouldn't be
that way. After being turned off to reading andwriting from a young age, my definition of reading
and writing were hindered from these experiences. Going from classrooms...show more content...
Finding out later that I have a learning disability hindered all attempts I would make at reading for
fun writing because I wasn't good at it or didn't understand grammar. So my definitions of reading
and writing were hindered by the fact that I only put in the bare minimum not giving it my all to
learn how to .
My first attempt at English 1101 I came with the mindset like it was highschool that i could breeze
though the course with the bare minimum talk about the bigger picture summarize write a 5
paragraph essay, not realizing college english wouldn't difficult. After my mindset was changed I
thought if I just changed teachers that i would pass. Walking into my second attempt for english
1101 and finding out that it wasn't going to be any easier i knew at that point i had to put in the
immense amount of time it would take to read and write papers i dreaded but as i opened up to the
realization that i would have to put in the time and open up to a new way of doing things .
In my second attempt at English class I realized after the first couple classes that writing was no
longer some magical formula you could follow and if you did you would pass. "For some it will
come as a surprise to learn that reading and writing have no transformative powers."

If I decided to go backpacking through any country I think I would bring a book, a shovel, and a
pack of cards. When I was younger, I would never have chosen to put a book in my backpack. I
had a lot of trouble reading in elementary school so naturally, I started to hate reading with a
passion. Everyone tried to help me out, especially my mom since she was such a huge reader. No
matter their efforts I continued to hate it for most of my elementary days. Finally, my former
2nd–grade teacher decided to give me a different book to read. She explained that if I wanted to
get better at reading, I would have to find a way to overcome my frustration. I knew that reading
was really important and if I had a hard time just wait until I got to high school. So, for the...show

Now, as a senior all I do is read, read, and read some more. I'm so thankful that all my family
members stuck it out with me and that my teachers never gave up on me. Learning to enjoy reading
also gave me a boost in self–confidence. If I could push through all that frustration and come out
on top then why should I be able to conquer more obstacles? So when I go backpacking through a
country, I will be sure to bring along my copy of The Sorcerer's Stone so that if hit some obstacles
on the way I can just look at it and remember that I can do this. The second item would be a
strange thing to carry in a backpack and probably would be a pain to haul everywhere. However,
the shovel would serve a lot of purposes, the main one being that it would remind me of my
family. While this might not be a really flattering representation it is still accurate. I grew up on a
little farm in Minnesota with my parents and three brothers. From a very young age, I was taught
how to work and how to be a good worker. There was always something to do on the farm, from
herding cattle, to cutting wood, or having the misfortune to pick thistles. Many of the tasks we had
were time–consuming and physically

Reflection Of Reading And Writing
Writing has always been something I dread. It's weird because I love talking and telling stories,
but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It's almost as if a horse race
just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to
place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it
takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It's not that I think I'm a "bad writer," I
just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don't think highly of my writing skills. When I was
little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my
journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it's...show more content...
Project three, Recovery is Possible: Narcotics Anonymous, hit very close to home for me. This
was a paper discussing a discourse community, the importance of such, and the niche associated
with Narcotics Anonymous. This paper meant a lot to me and I feel honored to have been able to
write about such a beautiful thing. Both of these projects needed a lot of work done, but I was
able to identify the mistakes and correct them using the skills I mentioned earlier. During the
revision process of project one, My Personal Analysis of Repurposing, I was shocked. As I was
reading, I was thinking to myself, "who even wrote this?". I made several major revisions in order
for it to be ready to showcase. After rereading my draft again and again, I ran into a major
dilemma. I broke down the literate practice of organization into three main components: detail
oriented, time management, and teamwork. I thoroughly explained how I repurposed detail
oriented and teamwork, but time management lacked important information. I added nearly a
whole page regarding how I've repurposed managing my time at different places in different ways.
Another one of the major changes made was reorganizing the structure of my paper. On my rough
draft, I had a very poor introduction. I cut some of it out and reorganized it so everything flows
correctly. I also had

My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years
Literacy Narrative: My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years
I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it
difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book reports, and any other required assignment. I
am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that
people tend to misunderstand my point if it is written.
When I sit to write, I have to think about what I want to say. This is not easy for me as I tend to
think about several things at once. Clearing my mind and focusing on the writing task is a challenge
in itself. I do not consider myself a strong writer and find it intimidating especially when I know it
will be critiqued. The sense of failure when seeing the paper I worked so hard on look like the
newest local headline of a recent murder is disheartening for me. I assume I am being overly
critical of myself but those feelings seem to be redeemed when I look over the aftermath of what
was my wonderful work of mental art.
The irony of all of this is I write many different things in my current job. One any given day I draft
contracts, amendments, and addendums to name a few. I have learned a great deal from my bosses
and mentors which has made me a better writer and more aware of my grammar and proofreading
of work. My Vice President is an attorney and English major with a keen ability to find the minutest
errors. I try to take any criticism

Essay on Reading-Is It Important?

Reading–Is It Important?
Reading can be such a broad topic in America today. How important is it, why do we read, the
questions are endless but to what extent is reading really important? There are so many issues
going on around the globe such as illegal immigration, abortion and the new health care reform.
Reading is no where near as important as those topics, those issues can change one's life forever and
reading is just something we do without even noticing. It comes natural to a human being in the 21st
century. In Rick Moody's piece "The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading" he is arguing that there is no
right or wrong way to read. I agree with Moody's opinion that there is no right or wrong...show more

We were all created differently which means we all look at things with a different viewpoint.
There should never be a limitation on reading, we have the freedom as human beings to interpret
something any way we want too. Books have that power to take you into your thoughts and really
examine what your thoughts are on the book and how you feel and when it's fiction it can take
you into the story and get you to really use your imagination, there can be no limitations when it
comes to your own thoughts and your own imagination. Rick Moody said "I believe in the
absolute and unlimited liberty of reading, I believe in wandering through the stacks and picking
out the first thing that strikes me" (pg.3) and later in the essay he said "I believe there is not now
and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl
of literary meaning in all cases" (pg. 4). The author clearly believes that reading should be left up
to the imagination and the reader should have complete control on how he or she looks at the book
they are reading. After reading this piece, Moody definitely caught my attention with the idea that
there are people out there that believe there is a certain way to read something and you never really
realize how seriously people take the topic of reading and how many different opinions there are on
the issue. Reading is something we do so naturally just like breathing or walking. Moody reminded

Reflection About Reading And Writing
Rick Riordan once said, "The images from the book you make in your head are always going to
be the best images." It was in these words that I started reading books at a young age. When I was
growing up as a kid in elementary school, I did not have a huge interest in reading or writing, that is,
until I met my fourth–grade teacher. When I met Ms. Deemer, my perspective onreading and writing
changed as she introduced me to books that were in my pool of interests and gave me tips on
writing, resulting in a change of how I looked at reading and writing.
Unfortunately, I struggled to read a bit, and this resulted because of my tendency to skim through
words while reading, giving me a hard time understanding the main idea of the story or...show more

I also think that if the book that I would have to read or if the subject I am writing on is appealing
to me, then I think I would be more dedicated to reading it, instead of unwillingly do it.
At this point, I was at the peak of my writing and reading skills. I was soon offered opportunities
or advantages from my hard work. For example, my teachers started to congratulate me for my
writing on my essays and I was given chances to enter for contests that no one else was given. All
of this came with some cons although. Now, I had friends or classmates coming to me for help
when I needed to also work on my assignments, which was a huge pain.
Additionally, I was bilingual, speaking Vietnamese and English, which helped my in reading
Vietnamese and translating it for others, which has proved to be very useful. As a result, I started to
take classes to improve on my Vietnamese and started to learn Spanish. Knowing that these
languages would help me with my future and choices in life, I decided to not let these opportunities
to slip by and grab them.
From here on, every time when I would read or write, it felt like an instant, where I just opened
my book and closed it or if I picked up a pencil and magically finished writing in a moment. Books
were my past time for entertainment and writing was a way to release my ideas onto paper and not
forget them. As a result, my perspective changed on reading and

Reflection About Reading
Reading
Introduction
Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It
has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of
parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children.
The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which
part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages.
At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This
interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult
words from the context. I...show more content...
The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break
reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main ideas. Scanning is to review what you have
read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of
reading. It allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what
is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my
own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading
material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the
original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing.
Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy
to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher.
Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able
to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative
aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering
questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting.
It is very important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I

Essay on Development of Reading Skills
Reading comprehension skill consists of different types of reading which is related to reading styles.
The aptitudes of using these skills conserve a lot of time and helps in understanding the meaning
from the text.
Reading skills can be categorized to four important skills which are, intensive reading, extensive
reading, scanning and skimming which have a significant and substantial role in facilitating reading
activity.
Intensive reading is practicing reading inside the classroom by supervising with a tutor and demands
focusing on details in order to comprehend the text appropriately.
Brown (1994) has been claimed that a reader has to analyze the text by seeking of grammatical
structures and other details for the purpose to build...show more content...
In this type of reading, short texts of no more than 500 words can be used so as to consolidate and
reinforce the ability in reading with satisfaction and pleasure.
Critics such as Macleod (2004) argues that reading short text prevent readers to practice full time
reading and using equivalent materials restricts the independence of select and read different topics
furthermore choosing a text by a tutor neglects the interest of reading as well as reading short texts
does not contain sufficient language diversity which is diminish the language benefits of the text.
Extensive reading is another type of reading style which is practiced outside the classroom and the
material are chosen by readers to warrant appropriate option to increase the chances in reading
activity and the major ideas of this skill is to attain a general understanding of a text with a lesser
amount of focusing on grammatical details and construct a self confident to enhance a high number
of readers to read with enthusiasm. (Brown1994).
As Macleod (2004) states that it is general comprehending without focusing on difficult words.
A large number of learners faced many difficulties in reading but can be developed by means of
extensive reading and continual practice and which is the most effectual way to improve language
proficiency.
According to (Brown 2010) extensive reading is reading materials as much as probable at a suitable

Reflection On My Reading Skills
Reflection Before taking this class I thought that my reading skills were exceptional, but I was
undeniably wrong about that. Now, after taking this class I can say that my reading skills have
greatly improved. I now know how to analyze works of art and find new meanings behind the
words that I read. Now, with the knowledge on how to use criticism to my advantage, all types of
literature will become wide open to me in a sense that I will be able to understand literature in
greater detail. I would certainly say that I learned more in this English class than any other
English class I have taken so far, even though it was online. I even improved on my grammar
throughout the course of these past six weeks. I learned how to write more comprehensive
paragraphs and how to write essays that stay on topic as well. Before taking this class I had not
read too many poems so I was not too familiar with quoting or citing them. Now, I easily know
how to quote a line or stanza without having to look up what to do every time. I would also say that
I am far more appreciative of literature, more than ever poetry. Before this class I did not take
poetry to seriously as I thought it was silly and for the most part nonsense that was being spat off
by crazy writers. Unbeknownst to me I found out quickly just how deep and emotional some
poetry can be. I found out awfully fast that poetry is more than just dilly dally writings and the
nonsense that I believed it was. Of course, being as old as I

The Importance Of Early Reading Skills
Reading is a skill often taken for granted but it is essential in order to progress in life. For a child
being able to read well helps them learn new things, give ideas and enables use of imagination.
National literacy trust (2015) suggests that children's early language skills can have a major impact
on a child's development of literacy skills. Five–year olds with poor language and literacy have a
higher risk of underachieving at age seven and beyond. Reading skills encourage more opportunities
in life and it can affect a child's wellbeing if they do not achieve this effectively (Finnegan,2015).
For a child who is just starting to learn to read, they need sufficient practice in reading a variety of
different books to achieve fluency. Reading can be complex and has many different aspects
(Burns,1999). It is suggested that children who have problems reading and writing at a young age
will find it hard to catch up as they get older and will not reach their full potential as adults, many
will withdraw from school or society and some becoming involved with crime (MacBlain,2014). 40
percent of children find learning to read a challenge but with early help, most reading problems can
be prevented (Reading Rockets, n.d.).
This resource had been created to encourage a child to learn to read through play. It is in the form of
a game and it is aimed at helping a child repeat the words that extra practice is needed from a book
that has been read. The resource created is a game that incorporates play and praise in which are
essential skills to support a child that is learning something new. Games enable all children to
develop skills without pressure and are particularly important for children who may be less
confident (Lindon, 1993). The 'Let's Read' game can be used for a variety of ages as the words
can be changed and personalised depending on the child's reading ability. This game is a good
way of helping to teach a child to read and improve on words that they struggle with because it is
taught by learning through play, therefore the child is less aware they are learning and it is a fun
way to practice. The child is also receiving praise and reward through the star reward sheet that
comes with the game. By

Reflective Essay About Reading
Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and
is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to
begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a
strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun
and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time
they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a
good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more
naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to
make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different
levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the
students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for which our
teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the
genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time
they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different
genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and
look up any words we didn't know. This was

Personal Narrative– My Love of Reading and Writing
Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre–elementary
to college, I've managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly
helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many
different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the
safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I'll still have my talent
and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my
wishes. I was always a creative child; it was something I just...show more content...
Reading was the new outlet for my imagination and the stories I read fascinated me. They weren't
too unlike the scripts of computer games or the own stories I came up with on my own, but books
actually had the action and emotional aspects written out. And again, while my peers were reading
things about growing up, things that had morals and would teach valuable lessons (I remember one
book about a shoplifter who had to do community service at an animal shelter), I read real fiction:
Jurassic Park, Dragonriders of Pern, Lord of the Rings... Stuff of fantasy and science–fiction that let
my mind stray from reality. Stuff that kept my imagination alive while I was being forced to
learn multiplication and the names of countries. Of course, my teachers encouraged me to keep
reading, as long as I wasn't doing the reading in the middle of their lectures. But it wasn't because
of their influence, however, that kept me interested in books. It was because I loved it. It put
pictures into my head and made me think. So I kept reading. But even then I knew reading wasn't
enough... Yes, the stories were fascinating, but they weren't what I wanted. Back then I wasn't sure
what I wanted, but as middle school came to a close, I found it. All eighth graders had to take a

that I wanted to be an archaeologist and the strange look she

know about reading and she influenced the way I read. She always told me, when I was younger,
to pronounce my words right so that when I get older I would pronounce my words right. All that
she has said to me and taught me when I was coming up as a younger child helped me get to the
level of reading I am on today and also to the level of understanding I have of all the words I read.
Without her encouraging me in this way I would have had problems understanding things that I

as a kid. When I'm reading, it doesn't really matter where I read. When I'm reading I go into a

character and what he or she is going through. Also, when I'm reading I think the best place for
me would be where it's quiet because I find it easier to concentrate in silence. I also read better
when I'm upset because it gives me an outlet to release anger and allows me to get my work done.
All throughout my life, I've had many good experiences reading. When it comes to reading, for me,

Essay On Extensive Reading
6. Definition of extensive reading
Extensive reading is a language teaching procedure where learners are supposed to read large
quantities of material or long texts for global understanding, the principle goal being obtained
pleasure from the text (Bamford, 2004).
The term of "Extensive Reading" was originally coined by Palmer (1917) and since different terms
have been used to refer to extensive reading; such as: "Supplementary Reading", "Book Flood",
"Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading", "Substained Silent Reading", "Reading because you want
to", "free Voluntary Reading ", "free reading".
Extensive reading is one of the two types: the first type, where language learners read for meaning
that focuses on input. The second type, is to read for fluency development. Extensive reading is also
defined as "the reading...show more content...
This is what students really enjoy about extensive reading, they are also encouraged to stop reading
anything that is not interesting or that find it too difficult.
9–4 Learners read as much as possible:
The language learning benefits of extensive reading come from the quantity of reading. For the
benefits of extensive reading to take effect, a book a week is an appropriate goal. This is a realistic
target as books written for beginning language learners are very short.
9–5 Reading speed is usually faster rather than slower:
Because of the fact that the material is easy understandable for students, their reading is fluent.
Learners are encouraged to ignore or guess the meaning of a few unknown items they may encounter
from the context.
9–6 The purpose of reading is usually related to pleasure, information and general understanding:
Extensive reading encourages reading for pleasure and information. The aim of reading is not
hundred percent comprehension; to meet the purpose of reading sufficient understanding is
satisfactory.
9–7 Reading is individual and

Why Should I Read? Essay
Why Should I Read?
"Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all
your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms."
Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author.
Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a
good book better then sitting on the couch watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered
the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until I

With a book to aid the imagination, a person can go anywhere. They can be marooned on a desert
island where normal boys change to savage beasts in Lord of the Flies, they can become Hannibal

Books hold vast amounts of knowledge. In every book, there is something to learn. Biographies and
Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind
celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice.
Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It
cultivates their young minds and helps them to believe anything is possible.
In 1966
Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she
volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned no or few books. It develops and delivers
children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate
school–age children to read regularly. Last year, RIF celebrated its 35th anniversary and the

Have you ever lit your pants on fire!?! Well I have not either, but I have made a fool of myself in

when I finally did something wrong. I learned the hard way, through slight humiliation, that you

in nature that it scared me a little. I took her word that there was going to be a pop quiz so I made
sure to bring my book and worksheet home to study. The next day, as promised, she handed out a

five multiple choice answers on it. After our quiz she told us to read the next chapter silently in
class. I had other homework to do and I preferred to read at home anyway, so while the rest of my
class was reading, I worked on homework. After about 30 minutes I had finished all my
assignments. I decided I should at least start reading the chapter since I did not have anything
else to do. I was about two paragraphs in when my teacher interrupts the class to see if everyone
was done reading the chapter. Unknown to me, the chapter was fairly short and everyone, but me,
had finished it. I raised my hand slowly to tell her that I had not finished reading it. Everyone in
my class turned around and looked at me. She asked me how far I was in the chapter and how
much time I needed to finish. I hesitated and told her I had just started reading it because I was

Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and
even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need
for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the
olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious
sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some
extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together
for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read,
we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content...
There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for
knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic
importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind
and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for
pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it
differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves
tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides
knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing"
time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those
who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute
for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap
created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full

conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.

Essay on Reading, Writing and Literacy
I wouldn't say that I am a good writer, and I really don't like to read books either. Through my
years in school I became literate in these two categories. I was and still am not interested in
writing, or reading books in my spare time. The only writing I have ever done is for school.
Writing just does not interest me, and the only reading I do out of class is reading about sports in
magazines, or reading the news, or looking at web pages. I have only read a couple of books on my
own, 95% of all the books I have read have been for school. The reason for not writing out of class
is probably attributed to the fact that I am a very impatient person, and I have a short attention span.
I have no interest in writing and reading so when...show more content...
The way it helps me out is if I'm starting to get bored typing a paper I don't have to leave the
computer I could go on the internet and look at ESPN for a couple of minutes and after I check
out last nights scores I can go back to writing my paper. Because of my computer literacy there are a
numerous amount of things I know I can do on a computer like listen to music, get on the internet,
check e–mail, watch a movie, talk to a friend, etc. It might take my attention away from typing but
it is only for a little bit, and then I am back to typing. In the long run I can get the assignment done
faster than just sitting in one spot with no distractions around because I will eventually step away
and start doing something else, then someone might call me to go some where and I will forget
about the paper and leave.
I myself am more of a "hands–on" type of learner; I would rather see demonstrations on what I need
to do and be told why it was done that way, and the reason for it. Some subjects don't need to be
taught with the hands–on approach. But now since I am in college the responsibility between the
teachers and myself has shifted, I now have to seek out the information instead of the teacher's
hand feeding it to me. One of my strengths is Restorative, which means that I like to solve
problems. It applies to my style of learning because if I don't understand something I do all I can to
understand it. I now

Reflection On Reading And Writing
My experience in English 202 has been an interesting and informative one. Prior to taking this
course, I thought that I knew what the English major was all about: reading and writing. Both of
those things come easily to me, so I expected this class to be a piece of cake.
What I discovered over the course of the semester is that while reading and writing are indeed central
to the English major, there is much more to it than that. My knowledge of literary theory was scanty
at best. I had no idea how many different schools of thought exist in this field. The ability to view a
text through a variety of critical lenses was unfamiliar to me, but now that I understand the concept,
it brings new insight to my reading. Having begun this semester with minimal knowledge of literary
theory, I discovered that I prefer outward–looking theories such as psychoanalytic and feminist theory
over inward–looking theories such as new criticism. While I did well on all my papers and quizzes, I
struggled with writing coherent thesis statements, organizing my ideas on paper, and writing smooth
transitions; I hope to continue to improve in these areas going forward. Although I did not dislike
the inward–looking theories that we studied at the beginning of the semester (indeed, discourse
theory was a pleasant surprise), I will always feel more at home working with outward–looking
theories. As a reader, I instinctively seek out additional information to gain insight into the author's or

Essay On Reading

  • 1. Reading And Reflection Essay For as long as I can remember on the first day of class no matter what class it seems that the teacher would always look upon the class and ask what our personal definition of reading and writing or why we were in the class and people always seem to give the same hesitant answer every year. I thought I knew why I in the class, I assumed it was like high school english as long as I stuck to the formula that was engraved in our minds that I would have no trouble making it though the course. However, after the first day of class i knew that this class probably wouldn't be that way. After being turned off to reading andwriting from a young age, my definition of reading and writing were hindered from these experiences. Going from classrooms...show more content... Finding out later that I have a learning disability hindered all attempts I would make at reading for fun writing because I wasn't good at it or didn't understand grammar. So my definitions of reading and writing were hindered by the fact that I only put in the bare minimum not giving it my all to learn how to . My first attempt at English 1101 I came with the mindset like it was highschool that i could breeze though the course with the bare minimum talk about the bigger picture summarize write a 5 paragraph essay, not realizing college english wouldn't difficult. After my mindset was changed I thought if I just changed teachers that i would pass. Walking into my second attempt for english 1101 and finding out that it wasn't going to be any easier i knew at that point i had to put in the immense amount of time it would take to read and write papers i dreaded but as i opened up to the realization that i would have to put in the time and open up to a new way of doing things . In my second attempt at English class I realized after the first couple classes that writing was no longer some magical formula you could follow and if you did you would pass. "For some it will come as a surprise to learn that reading and writing have no transformative powers." Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. If I decided to go backpacking through any country I think I would bring a book, a shovel, and a pack of cards. When I was younger, I would never have chosen to put a book in my backpack. I had a lot of trouble reading in elementary school so naturally, I started to hate reading with a passion. Everyone tried to help me out, especially my mom since she was such a huge reader. No matter their efforts I continued to hate it for most of my elementary days. Finally, my former 2nd–grade teacher decided to give me a different book to read. She explained that if I wanted to get better at reading, I would have to find a way to overcome my frustration. I knew that reading was really important and if I had a hard time just wait until I got to high school. So, for the...show more content... Now, as a senior all I do is read, read, and read some more. I'm so thankful that all my family members stuck it out with me and that my teachers never gave up on me. Learning to enjoy reading also gave me a boost in self–confidence. If I could push through all that frustration and come out on top then why should I be able to conquer more obstacles? So when I go backpacking through a country, I will be sure to bring along my copy of The Sorcerer's Stone so that if hit some obstacles on the way I can just look at it and remember that I can do this. The second item would be a strange thing to carry in a backpack and probably would be a pain to haul everywhere. However, the shovel would serve a lot of purposes, the main one being that it would remind me of my family. While this might not be a really flattering representation it is still accurate. I grew up on a little farm in Minnesota with my parents and three brothers. From a very young age, I was taught how to work and how to be a good worker. There was always something to do on the farm, from herding cattle, to cutting wood, or having the misfortune to pick thistles. Many of the tasks we had were time–consuming and physically Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reflection Of Reading And Writing Writing has always been something I dread. It's weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It's almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It's not that I think I'm a "bad writer," I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don't think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it's...show more content... Project three, Recovery is Possible: Narcotics Anonymous, hit very close to home for me. This was a paper discussing a discourse community, the importance of such, and the niche associated with Narcotics Anonymous. This paper meant a lot to me and I feel honored to have been able to write about such a beautiful thing. Both of these projects needed a lot of work done, but I was able to identify the mistakes and correct them using the skills I mentioned earlier. During the revision process of project one, My Personal Analysis of Repurposing, I was shocked. As I was reading, I was thinking to myself, "who even wrote this?". I made several major revisions in order for it to be ready to showcase. After rereading my draft again and again, I ran into a major dilemma. I broke down the literate practice of organization into three main components: detail oriented, time management, and teamwork. I thoroughly explained how I repurposed detail oriented and teamwork, but time management lacked important information. I added nearly a whole page regarding how I've repurposed managing my time at different places in different ways. Another one of the major changes made was reorganizing the structure of my paper. On my rough draft, I had a very poor introduction. I cut some of it out and reorganized it so everything flows correctly. I also had Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years Literacy Narrative: My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book reports, and any other required assignment. I am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that people tend to misunderstand my point if it is written. When I sit to write, I have to think about what I want to say. This is not easy for me as I tend to think about several things at once. Clearing my mind and focusing on the writing task is a challenge in itself. I do not consider myself a strong writer and find it intimidating especially when I know it will be critiqued. The sense of failure when seeing the paper I worked so hard on look like the newest local headline of a recent murder is disheartening for me. I assume I am being overly critical of myself but those feelings seem to be redeemed when I look over the aftermath of what was my wonderful work of mental art. The irony of all of this is I write many different things in my current job. One any given day I draft contracts, amendments, and addendums to name a few. I have learned a great deal from my bosses and mentors which has made me a better writer and more aware of my grammar and proofreading of work. My Vice President is an attorney and English major with a keen ability to find the minutest errors. I try to take any criticism Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay on Reading-Is It Important? Soriano, Rachel English 091 July 19 2011 Reading–Is It Important? Reading can be such a broad topic in America today. How important is it, why do we read, the questions are endless but to what extent is reading really important? There are so many issues going on around the globe such as illegal immigration, abortion and the new health care reform. Reading is no where near as important as those topics, those issues can change one's life forever and reading is just something we do without even noticing. It comes natural to a human being in the 21st century. In Rick Moody's piece "The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading" he is arguing that there is no right or wrong way to read. I agree with Moody's opinion that there is no right or wrong...show more content... We were all created differently which means we all look at things with a different viewpoint. There should never be a limitation on reading, we have the freedom as human beings to interpret something any way we want too. Books have that power to take you into your thoughts and really examine what your thoughts are on the book and how you feel and when it's fiction it can take you into the story and get you to really use your imagination, there can be no limitations when it comes to your own thoughts and your own imagination. Rick Moody said "I believe in the absolute and unlimited liberty of reading, I believe in wandering through the stacks and picking out the first thing that strikes me" (pg.3) and later in the essay he said "I believe there is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of literary meaning in all cases" (pg. 4). The author clearly believes that reading should be left up to the imagination and the reader should have complete control on how he or she looks at the book they are reading. After reading this piece, Moody definitely caught my attention with the idea that there are people out there that believe there is a certain way to read something and you never really realize how seriously people take the topic of reading and how many different opinions there are on the issue. Reading is something we do so naturally just like breathing or walking. Moody reminded us throughout his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Reflection About Reading And Writing Rick Riordan once said, "The images from the book you make in your head are always going to be the best images." It was in these words that I started reading books at a young age. When I was growing up as a kid in elementary school, I did not have a huge interest in reading or writing, that is, until I met my fourth–grade teacher. When I met Ms. Deemer, my perspective onreading and writing changed as she introduced me to books that were in my pool of interests and gave me tips on writing, resulting in a change of how I looked at reading and writing. Unfortunately, I struggled to read a bit, and this resulted because of my tendency to skim through words while reading, giving me a hard time understanding the main idea of the story or...show more content... I also think that if the book that I would have to read or if the subject I am writing on is appealing to me, then I think I would be more dedicated to reading it, instead of unwillingly do it. At this point, I was at the peak of my writing and reading skills. I was soon offered opportunities or advantages from my hard work. For example, my teachers started to congratulate me for my writing on my essays and I was given chances to enter for contests that no one else was given. All of this came with some cons although. Now, I had friends or classmates coming to me for help when I needed to also work on my assignments, which was a huge pain. Additionally, I was bilingual, speaking Vietnamese and English, which helped my in reading Vietnamese and translating it for others, which has proved to be very useful. As a result, I started to take classes to improve on my Vietnamese and started to learn Spanish. Knowing that these languages would help me with my future and choices in life, I decided to not let these opportunities to slip by and grab them. From here on, every time when I would read or write, it felt like an instant, where I just opened my book and closed it or if I picked up a pencil and magically finished writing in a moment. Books were my past time for entertainment and writing was a way to release my ideas onto paper and not forget them. As a result, my perspective changed on reading and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Reflection About Reading Reading Introduction Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children. The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content... The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing. Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay on Development of Reading Skills Reading comprehension skill consists of different types of reading which is related to reading styles. The aptitudes of using these skills conserve a lot of time and helps in understanding the meaning from the text. Reading skills can be categorized to four important skills which are, intensive reading, extensive reading, scanning and skimming which have a significant and substantial role in facilitating reading activity. Intensive reading is practicing reading inside the classroom by supervising with a tutor and demands focusing on details in order to comprehend the text appropriately. Brown (1994) has been claimed that a reader has to analyze the text by seeking of grammatical structures and other details for the purpose to build...show more content... In this type of reading, short texts of no more than 500 words can be used so as to consolidate and reinforce the ability in reading with satisfaction and pleasure. Critics such as Macleod (2004) argues that reading short text prevent readers to practice full time reading and using equivalent materials restricts the independence of select and read different topics furthermore choosing a text by a tutor neglects the interest of reading as well as reading short texts does not contain sufficient language diversity which is diminish the language benefits of the text. Extensive reading is another type of reading style which is practiced outside the classroom and the material are chosen by readers to warrant appropriate option to increase the chances in reading activity and the major ideas of this skill is to attain a general understanding of a text with a lesser amount of focusing on grammatical details and construct a self confident to enhance a high number of readers to read with enthusiasm. (Brown1994). As Macleod (2004) states that it is general comprehending without focusing on difficult words. A large number of learners faced many difficulties in reading but can be developed by means of extensive reading and continual practice and which is the most effectual way to improve language proficiency. • 9. Reflection On My Reading Skills Reflection Before taking this class I thought that my reading skills were exceptional, but I was undeniably wrong about that. Now, after taking this class I can say that my reading skills have greatly improved. I now know how to analyze works of art and find new meanings behind the words that I read. Now, with the knowledge on how to use criticism to my advantage, all types of literature will become wide open to me in a sense that I will be able to understand literature in greater detail. I would certainly say that I learned more in this English class than any other English class I have taken so far, even though it was online. I even improved on my grammar throughout the course of these past six weeks. I learned how to write more comprehensive paragraphs and how to write essays that stay on topic as well. Before taking this class I had not read too many poems so I was not too familiar with quoting or citing them. Now, I easily know how to quote a line or stanza without having to look up what to do every time. I would also say that I am far more appreciative of literature, more than ever poetry. Before this class I did not take poetry to seriously as I thought it was silly and for the most part nonsense that was being spat off by crazy writers. Unbeknownst to me I found out quickly just how deep and emotional some poetry can be. I found out awfully fast that poetry is more than just dilly dally writings and the nonsense that I believed it was. Of course, being as old as I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. The Importance Of Early Reading Skills Reading is a skill often taken for granted but it is essential in order to progress in life. For a child being able to read well helps them learn new things, give ideas and enables use of imagination. National literacy trust (2015) suggests that children's early language skills can have a major impact on a child's development of literacy skills. Five–year olds with poor language and literacy have a higher risk of underachieving at age seven and beyond. Reading skills encourage more opportunities in life and it can affect a child's wellbeing if they do not achieve this effectively (Finnegan,2015). For a child who is just starting to learn to read, they need sufficient practice in reading a variety of different books to achieve fluency. Reading can be complex and has many different aspects (Burns,1999). It is suggested that children who have problems reading and writing at a young age will find it hard to catch up as they get older and will not reach their full potential as adults, many will withdraw from school or society and some becoming involved with crime (MacBlain,2014). 40 percent of children find learning to read a challenge but with early help, most reading problems can be prevented (Reading Rockets, n.d.). This resource had been created to encourage a child to learn to read through play. It is in the form of a game and it is aimed at helping a child repeat the words that extra practice is needed from a book that has been read. The resource created is a game that incorporates play and praise in which are essential skills to support a child that is learning something new. Games enable all children to develop skills without pressure and are particularly important for children who may be less confident (Lindon, 1993). The 'Let's Read' game can be used for a variety of ages as the words can be changed and personalised depending on the child's reading ability. This game is a good way of helping to teach a child to read and improve on words that they struggle with because it is taught by learning through play, therefore the child is less aware they are learning and it is a fun way to practice. The child is also receiving praise and reward through the star reward sheet that comes with the game. By Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Reflective Essay About Reading Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and look up any words we didn't know. This was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Personal Narrative– My Love of Reading and Writing Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre–elementary to college, I've managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I'll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my wishes. I was always a creative child; it was something I just...show more content... Reading was the new outlet for my imagination and the stories I read fascinated me. They weren't too unlike the scripts of computer games or the own stories I came up with on my own, but books actually had the action and emotional aspects written out. And again, while my peers were reading things about growing up, things that had morals and would teach valuable lessons (I remember one book about a shoplifter who had to do community service at an animal shelter), I read real fiction: Jurassic Park, Dragonriders of Pern, Lord of the Rings... Stuff of fantasy and science–fiction that let my mind stray from reality. Stuff that kept my imagination alive while I was being forced to learn multiplication and the names of countries. Of course, my teachers encouraged me to keep reading, as long as I wasn't doing the reading in the middle of their lectures. But it wasn't because of their influence, however, that kept me interested in books. It was because I loved it. It put pictures into my head and made me think. So I kept reading. But even then I knew reading wasn't enough... Yes, the stories were fascinating, but they weren't what I wanted. Back then I wasn't sure what I wanted, but as middle school came to a close, I found it. All eighth graders had to take a career class to determine what we wanted to be when we grew up. I remember telling my teacher that I wanted to be an archaeologist and the strange look she Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Essay on My Personal Reading History Personal Reading History When I was a younger I don't remember if I was read to or not, but I read a lot of books. I enjoy reading books because they allow me to reach new heights in my imagination. At my age many kids say that reading is boring and is for losers. I think it's cool to read and will continue to read throughout my life. I have read many different types of books from fiction to biographies. The longest book I ever read was a book called Dragon Rider by Cornella Funke. It was five hundred and thirty five pages! When it comes to reading I am a superstar! So, she instilled what I know about reading and she influenced the way I read. She always told me, when I was younger, to pronounce my words right so that when I get older I would pronounce my words right. All that she has said to me and taught me when I was coming up as a younger child helped me get to the level of reading I am on today and also to the level of understanding I have of all the words I read. Without her encouraging me in this way I would have had problems understanding things that I read and wouldn't be as smart as I have grown to be. I am very thankful of how I was brought up as a kid. When I'm reading, it doesn't really matter where I read. When I'm reading I go into a different world and get to a place where I feel as if I'm part of the story and can relate to the main character and what he or she is going through. Also, when I'm reading I think the best place for me would be where it's quiet because I find it easier to concentrate in silence. I also read better when I'm upset because it gives me an outlet to release anger and allows me to get my work done. All throughout my life, I've had many good experiences reading. • 14. Essay On Extensive Reading 6. Definition of extensive reading Extensive reading is a language teaching procedure where learners are supposed to read large quantities of material or long texts for global understanding, the principle goal being obtained pleasure from the text (Bamford, 2004). The term of "Extensive Reading" was originally coined by Palmer (1917) and since different terms have been used to refer to extensive reading; such as: "Supplementary Reading", "Book Flood", "Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading", "Substained Silent Reading", "Reading because you want to", "free Voluntary Reading ", "free reading". Extensive reading is one of the two types: the first type, where language learners read for meaning that focuses on input. The second type, is to read for fluency development. For the benefits of extensive reading to take effect, a book a week is an appropriate goal. This is a realistic target as books written for beginning language learners are very short. 9–5 Reading speed is usually faster rather than slower: Because of the fact that the material is easy understandable for students, their reading is fluent. Learners are encouraged to ignore or guess the meaning of a few unknown items they may encounter from the context. 9–6 The purpose of reading is usually related to pleasure, information and general understanding: Extensive reading encourages reading for pleasure and information. The aim of reading is not hundred percent comprehension; to meet the purpose of reading sufficient understanding is satisfactory. 9–7 Reading is individual and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Why Should I Read? Essay Why Should I Read? "Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms." Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author. Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a good book better then sitting on the couch watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until I unlocked my first real book I couldn't have dreamed of the wonders and marvels that it opens to you. Biographies and Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice. Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It cultivates their young minds and helps them to believe anything is possible. In 1966 Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned no or few books. • 16. Reflective Essay On Reading Have you ever lit your pants on fire!?! Well I have not either, but I have made a fool of myself in front of my entire class. All of my teachers and classmates know that I am a slow reader, but I usually never do anything wrong. That is why it was such a shocking and hilarious experience when I finally did something wrong. I learned the hard way, through slight humiliation, that you should always follow the teacher's exact directions no matter what. During the month of May, 2017, my Language Arts class was assigned a book project. Everyone had a book and a worksheet that went along with the book, which helped us understand the meanings and ideas in the book. This year we were reading The Great Gatsby. The teacher would normally read the...show more content... My teacher had a strange sense of humor and after she had finished reading the chapter she said in a villainous tone, "It might be smart to review your worksheets for a surprise quiz tomorrow." She accompanied her evil statement with an equally evil smile that filled her face. It was so evil in nature that it scared me a little. I took her word that there was going to be a pop quiz so I made sure to bring my book and worksheet home to study. The next day, as promised, she handed out a short pop quiz. It was not even close to as difficult as she was trying to make it sound. It had only five multiple choice answers on it. After our quiz she told us to read the next chapter silently in class. I had other homework to do and I preferred to read at home anyway, so while the rest of my class was reading, I worked on homework. After about 30 minutes I had finished all my assignments. I decided I should at least start reading the chapter since I did not have anything else to do. I was about two paragraphs in when my teacher interrupts the class to see if everyone was done reading the chapter. Unknown to me, the chapter was fairly short and everyone, but me, had finished it. I raised my hand slowly to tell her that I had not finished reading it. Everyone in my class turned around and looked at me. She asked me how far I was in the chapter and how much time I needed to finish. I hesitated and told her I had just started reading it because I was going to read it at home. • 17. Essay on The Importance of Reading Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content... There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time. A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel. • 18. Essay on Reading, Writing and Literacy I wouldn't say that I am a good writer, and I really don't like to read books either. Through my years in school I became literate in these two categories. I was and still am not interested in writing, or reading books in my spare time. The only writing I have ever done is for school. Writing just does not interest me, and the only reading I do out of class is reading about sports in magazines, or reading the news, or looking at web pages. I have only read a couple of books on my own, 95% of all the books I have read have been for school. The reason for not writing out of class is probably attributed to the fact that I am a very impatient person, and I have a short attention span. In the long run I can get the assignment done faster than just sitting in one spot with no distractions around because I will eventually step away and start doing something else, then someone might call me to go some where and I will forget about the paper and leave. • 19. Reflection On Reading And Writing My experience in English 202 has been an interesting and informative one. Prior to taking this course, I thought that I knew what the English major was all about: reading and writing. Both of those things come easily to me, so I expected this class to be a piece of cake. What I discovered over the course of the semester is that while reading and writing are indeed central to the English major, there is much more to it than that. My knowledge of literary theory was scanty at best. I had no idea how many different schools of thought exist in this field. The ability to view a text through a variety of critical lenses was unfamiliar to me, but now that I understand the concept, it brings new insight to my reading. Having begun this semester with minimal knowledge of literary theory, I discovered that I prefer outward–looking theories such as psychoanalytic and feminist theory over inward–looking theories such as new criticism. While I did well on all my papers and quizzes, I struggled with writing coherent thesis statements, organizing my ideas on paper, and writing smooth transitions; I hope to continue to improve in these areas going forward. Although I did not dislike the inward–looking theories that we studied at the beginning of the semester (indeed, discourse theory was a pleasant surprise), I will always feel more at home working with outward–looking theories. As a reader, I instinctively seek out additional information to gain insight into the author's or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
