Essay on Dbq- "Era of Good Feelings"
During the early 1800's France and Britain were at war and for many years America remained
neutral. But, Great Britain began seizing American ships and impressing the Americans into the
British Navy. In addition, Great Britain was supplying the Native Americans in North America
with guns and, as a result America declared war on Britain in 1812. The phrase "Era of Good
Feelings" was used to describe the administrations of Munroe in 1816 but the validity of this
phrase is questioned. Many people might believe that the period after the war of 1812 was an "Era
of Good Feelings" because of the nation's gain of nationalism and expansion of the country, but it
was not because of growing sectionalism and state issues. After the War of 1812,...show more

This tariff was created to protect American factories in the north and was a tax placed on imported
goods. But the south was highly upset because they felt that this tariff only supported the north and
they had to pay it also. Document F also sheds light on sectionalism because Jefferson talks about a
geographic line that fills him with terror, also known as the 36,30 line created by Henry Clay. This
line determined if the upcoming states from the Louisiana Territory would have slavery or not. The
issue of slavery was a major player in the growth of sectionalism between the north and the south.
Moreover, the government had problems with the states. Maryland wanted to tax the national bank
which led to the case of McCulloch v. Maryland that was sent to the Supreme Court (Document
D).Similarly are the revolts seen in Document G which resulted in throwing 50–60 leaders from
South Carolina in jail but there were still prisoners stating that there are enough people to carry
the work into execution. Overall, the America had too much problems on their hands to be going
through an "Era of Good Feelings". All in all, the period after the War of 1812 may seem to be an
"Era of Good Feelings" because of nationalism and westward expansion, but in fact it was not
because of increasing sectionalism and state issues. As a result of winning the War of 1812 against

Once the completion of the War of 1812 took place, the federal government strive to gain many
policies to build up the national economy. The Second Bank of the US was created in 1816, after
the first national bank's charter had lapsed. It helped level the economy by assisting with creating
currency that worked nationally. The BUS helped create loans for farmers, small manufacturers, and
regulation of state banks to be able to provide their own currency. Also during the time of 1816,
Congress ended up creating the Tariff of 1816, which ended up inputting taxes on assorted imported
goods, to help assist with safeguarding America's iron and textile from the competition of the
British. When Monroe, Adams, and Madison, all came together, they advocated for a dynamic
economic role for the federal government, which included, the creation of a nation bank, tariff to be
able to protect Americans, and federal funded internal improvements, which were the construction of
canals and roads to assist with the flow of goods and people. Within...show more content...
During James Monroe's time into office, there were two major events that ended up taking place,
which were the Panic of 1819 and the Missouri Compromise if 1820. Cotton ended up becoming a
major force within the South and ended up assisting with the talks of the expansion of slavery,
which ended up going West with southern farmers. The national economy including southern
farmer's suffered a loss with the drop in prices for cotton within 1819. The Missouri Comprise in
1820, assisted with making the decision to admit Missouri as a slave state. This comprise, had a
clause which did not allow any type of slavery within the area that was West of the Mississippi
River. Even though this decision was made, it caused a lot of Sectionalism ruckus within the

Era Of Good Feelings: Something Of A Misnomer
The Era of Good Feelings can be considered "something of a misnomer." During this period, there
was a sort of illusion of calmness and growth. However, underneath the surface, there were numerous
conflicts and issues that contradicted the "Era of Good Feelings." The first to come was the Panic of
1819, which brought an economic crisis and resulted in unemployment, depression, and bankruptcies
among other things. This event exposes the economic instability of America, which has the
capabilities to destroy all financial structure that America has. When Missouri wanted to become a
slave state, the tensions between the North and South became much more apparent because of the
conflicting ideas of what Missouri should be. The South did not agree

The end of the 1820's marked the ending of a period in the United States that indicated a desire for
harmony among Americans known as "Era of Good Feeling." This era ended after Andrew Jackson
became president. During this time period, the Industrial Revolution came to the United States as
merchants and manufacturers restructured work routines, develop factories, and utilized a wide
range of natural resources. Between 1820 and 1848, American society was drastically reshaped by
the contrasting political and economic ideologies between various groups such as slaves, women,
and the common man; however the political and economic changes did not affect all groups
similarly. In the South slaves encountered hardships with their status in society...show more content...
Andrew Jackson expresses in his Farewell Address that planters, farmers, and laborers must
continue to work together in gaining equal rights. Johnson's purpose for writing the Farewell
Address was to explain to the average citizen that he must always fight inequality or brought down
from abroad. (Doc 4) Society began to reshape for all groups of society; especially for the common
man. As the Industrial Revolution continue to spread throughout the nation, many craft workers
espoused artisan republicanism. Artisan republicanism was a set of principles based on liberty and
equality. Craft workers saw themselves as small–scale producers, equal to one another and
independent to work for themselves. Many Americans from different classes of society were
given land, and jobs. With an increase in production and labor, the economy of the country grew
drastically. As an effect, the common man was no longer allowed to be excluded from political
processes. The number of eligible voters in America dramatical increased and in a large part, they
were in favor of the Democratic party. (Doc 6) Political and economic changes reshaped society in
that the common was now: rising in the ranks of society, holding government positions, and
establishing equality amongst one

In the 1800's following the war of 1812, the term commonly applied to that era in the United States
was known as the "era of good feelings". While the United States was growing in several different
aspects, such as politically, socially and economically, and changing as a country, there are several
key factors that denote this term, and nullify its meaning. While the changes were significant, and the
United States evolved at an exponential rate after the war of 1812, the accuracy of the term "era of
good feelings" is way off, and the United States was anything but experiencing an "era of good
feelings".
Following the war of 1812, growth occurred primarily economically, politically, and socially for the
United States. These changes...show more content...
Although this was increase throughout the United States, this economical situation occurred
primarily in the North, and much less in the south. In the south, the economic increase was much
different. Because of the large amounts of plantations and farms in the south, new land was needed
so that the crops that had dried up the soil could continue to grow and the economy can continue to
benefit. This growth in land and economy indicates that the economic benefit in the south came from
crops and agricultural might, rather than industrial. These differences help identify that the "era of
good feelings" and the nationalism that is implied is incorrect and inaccurate, as people have more
of a connection towards the land that they make their money on, which implies sectionalism.
Politically, the "era of good feelings" was extremely off. Even before the war of 1812, there had
always been a major difference in the political parties and systems of the government. A major
difference in this coming from extremely opposing ideologies of the parties and the lack of unity
between the two. The difference between the parties is also present in Document C, which shows
two different party tents during the fourth of july. Whilst the people are generally happy, the party
tents show that the difference is quite evident, and

The years following the War of 1812 and the Treaty of Ghent (1815–1825) have often been
distinguished as the Era of Good Feelings. It refers to the American's victory in the War of 1812
and is generally marked as a period in political history that reflected a sense of national purpose and
a desire for unity among Americans in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. The period's nickname
suggests that Monroe's years in presidency were marked by a spirit of nationalism, optimism, and
goodwill. Although, the era of good feelings emerged with cultural and economic Nationalism along
with the fading of the Federalist Party, peaceful foreign policies, and the implantation of the Monroe
Doctrine, the perception of unity and harmony can be misleading...show more content...
Thomas Jefferson referred to the Missouri Compromise as the geographical line that would cause
more irritation in America every time an issue environmentally came about (6). Although the
Missouri compromise crated a new slave state in Missouri and a free one in Maine, this did not
totally resolve the conflicts about allowing slavery in certain parts of the nation. Jefferson feared
that the nation's perseverance would be affected due to this dividing line. Another contribution to
the growth of political sectionalism was that from 1820 to 1824, the nation disbanded into
multiple political groups (7). By the time the election of 1820 came to a close, James Monroe won
most of the electoral votes, which showed that the people politically agreed on one person to run
their nation. But overtime areas began to split into different groups; supporting different people
with different ideas. Therefore, the increase in sectionalism began to grow. With people having
different views politically, the period after the War of 1812 cannot be considered the Era of Good

"Era of Good Feelings": a Misnomer In 1815, still recuperating from war and threats of secession,
America entered into a phase now referred to as the "Era of Good Feelings". The era first started
taking shape during the War of 1812, when strident partisan disagreements appeared to take a
sideline and an intense American spirit became nearly ubiquitous. Staunch Federalists paid the price
for breaking this spirit through talk of secession at the Hartford Convention, when national outrage
flared. The Federalist Party became associated with treason and parochialism, and its viability was
destroyed. Subsequently, all American politics congealed around the Democratic Republicans. For a
brief period of time, their political dominance dampened the...show more content...
In 1819, the Union existed in a precarious balance of eleven free states and eleven slave states, with
western expansion threatening to upset it. Although the Northwest Ordinance did not define an
explicit line of demarcation between future slave and free states, the generally lateral nature of
westward expansion mitigated the need for one. However, when the territory of Missouri applied for
admission to the Union as a slave state, crisis ensued. Representative James Tallmadge, Jr. incited
chaos when he proposed an amendment to the bill for Missouri's admission that would prohibit the
further introduction of slaves into Missouri and mandate the gradual end of slavery. After the
amendment was struck down in the senate, several northern reform groups began protesting. Former
Federalists jumped on the opportunity to return to politics. Southerners were equally aggravated
because, as they viewed it, slavery was a property issue, and therefore a state issue, not a federal
one. Only through 'The Great Compromiser', Henry Clay's uncanny ability to settle disputes, was the
Missouri Compromise reached by deciding that Maine's application for statehood would retain
balance. To prevent further confusion the southern border of Missouri, the 36Вє30' parallel, was
established as the demarcating line. The Compromise only temporarily cooled tensions between the

The so dubbed "era of good feelings" was a period encompassing the post war nationalism felt by
Americans following the war of 1812. The American nation was young and unproven, having to
continuously overcome internal affairs which include taxation, military feuds, political disputes and
the like. America brought with it these numerous conflicts to a war against an incredibly strong
British militant force. Overcoming conflicts within itself and externally in battle, the U.S. bounced
from bitterness toward a certainly positive atmosphere during this period. The era of good feelings
was an incredibly prosperous time for Americans because of nationalism, the absence of major
conflict, and a wave of unity among the previously divided people. Nationalism...show more

What previous timeline in American history could have invoked a stronger sense of pride and
positive outlook among the people? America during this period was quite young relative to all other
empires, and every stint of history was riddled with conflict; excise taxes, political disharmony,
impressment, secession movements, poverty, and mass casualty to name a few. The strongest
possible conflict analyzed in the sample documents was in document A, the country shifting from an
agrarian nation to an industrial powerhouse. Although this did cause worry for many farmers and
Agrarian idealists, it would later power America into the industrial revolution, a time of wealth and
prosperity. Even the largest conflict in this era led to prosperity, which is support in the belief that
the post–war period was indeed an "era of good

Era Of Good Feelings Essay
The "Era of Good Feelings" was a traditional name given to the years of James Monroe's
presidency, following the end of the War of 1812. Events such as the Louisiana Purchase, which
nearly doubled the size of American land and proved the Federalist party didn't have much as they
opposed the purchase, and fighting against the Barbary Pirates which gained the American navy
respect made people in America proud to be there and led up to the "good feelings." The time was
mostly characterized by an increase of nationalistic spirits as the Republican party become the single
party in the United States after Monroe won against Rufus King, his Federalist opponent in the 1816
election. Nationalism would have a large influence on many features of American culture and
economics; however, there were also many tensions growing during this time as well. There was
much discourse over issues such as the national bank, tariffs, and internal improvements. The
Republican party was the sole party at the time, it was also dividing, with many supporting what was
once Federalist policies. Sectional differences over slavery and states rights would also have a major
impact on politics and economics, with greater importance than the results of nationalistic influences.
Nationalism became a part of society through many different cultural areas. Gilbert Stuart, Charles
Willson Peale, and John Trumball painted revolutionary heroes. Parson Mason Weems wrote a
fictitious biography of George Washington.

During the early 1800's, after the War of 1812 the "Era of Good Feelings" emerged, due to the
nation having relatively little political conflict over foreign diplomacy and policy, faded away into
harmony, during President Monroe's terms in 1816. As Well, there was virtually one political party
at the time– Democratic–Republican Party, thus, eliminating conflict with other political parties and
an increased sense of nationalism, mostly due to the Nations pride with there "Victory" against the
British in the War of 1812. Although nationalism helped to unite the country. Sectionalism was

This economic crisis was caused by mostly the Congress's decisions and the Second National Bank.
Congress increased tariffs such as the Embargo Act, Non–Intercourse Act, and others that tax's
imports to reduce the competition and protect domestic manufacturers, but this decision hurt the
farmers in the south, that all goods was imported from other places, making increasing the price
of the exporting goods and making it more expensive for the Southerners (Doc A). Yet this
brought nationalism towards manufacturer in the northeast states of the U.S because it
supported the nation as a whole with manufacturer goods domestically rather then being imported
and the tariffs was made by the feudal government. The second reason was that Congress restore
the National Bank which lent loans for people to purchase land in the west due to the McCulloch
v. Maryland trial (Doc D). This also shows that the Federal government remains above all state
based legislatures and courts, thus promoting nationalism. However, when the bank tightened its
credit policy and demanded loans to be paid back, it caused foreclosures, widespread economic
deficits and causing the Panic of 1819. The grand need of a better transportation was in grand

disunity from the nation. He wanted to unite the U.S by making a system of roads and canals to
blend the county (Doc B). This was very beneficial to the government where it increased production
of good in the northern states and distribute food crops like wheat and corn from northwest states to

Era of Good Feeling (1817–1825) describes the early presidency of James Monroe, the 5th President
of the US, who acquired Florida from Spain and declared Monroe Doctrine to keep foreign powers

strong nationalism, economy properous, territorial expansion, fewer partisan conflicts, new
inventions, transportation improvements,National Bank was accepted and protective tariff. Many
parts of America were strengthened during this era. However, there were a number of tensions

The period after the War of 1812 during the presidency of James Monroe is often referred to as
the "era of good feelings" because of a feeling of nationalism, a feeling of pride and national unity.
The end of the Federalist Party also provided the nation with a feeling of nationalism, for there was
no political opposition toward the Republicans. This title, however, may not be the most accurate
label for this particular time period, for this time period marked the beginnings of sectionalism, with
heated debates over tariffs, the National Bank, and most importantly, over slavery. After the War of
1812 a Nationalistic spark ran throughout much of the United States. A primary factor in this

Those who had moved westward toward the frontier also did not entirely approve of the national
bank, for they looked far a way of easy credit, which was in the form of state banks. The westernmost
and southernmost states were entirely based on agriculture, while the states toward the north–east
coast were based on an industrial economy. The Protective Tariff of 1816 caused disagreements
between these two sections of the United States, for the Tariff unfairly benefitted the manufacturers
of the North–East. Most importantly, with regards to sectionalism, were the many disputes involving
slavery. As Anna Hayes from South Carolina asserts, in her letter to her cousin, the situation in
South Carolina was just as bad "if not superior to the scenes acted in St. Domingo." South Carolina
was currently experiencing slave revolts at that time. These slave revolts brought up the question of
whether or not slavery was correct which caused mush sectionalism between different regions of the
United States. John Randolph, who also apposed the Tariff of 1816, mentioned that a simple
geographical line – the Missouri Compromise– was not enough to completely silence the
controversy of slavery. The label of "The Era of Good Feelings" is not the most accurate title for this
period. Although there was an increase in nationalistic ideals, such as the betterment of the union
through internal improvements, sectionalism lied beneath the

The period of James Monroe's presidency has gained the term used worldwide as the "Era of
Good Feelings". It was adopted by this name because of Monroe's action in visiting the U.S
military basis and because of the spirit of nationalism and optimism gained by the people from the
War of 1812. Foreign affairs exemplifies why this name is partly fact. However, the perception of
unity that this era defines is somewhat misleading. Throughout this period, there were various
problems that contradicted the era's name. Some of the serious issues that divided the nation were
economic depression and sectionalism. The first major fracture in "Era of Good Feelings" was an

This amendment is known as the Tallmadge Amendment. This bill stated that no slaves could be
brought into the state of Missouri and slaves born there would be freed at the age of 25.
Southerners were bothered by this suggested law because they felt that it would threaten the
sectional balance we had in our country and that Congress would attempt to abolish slavery in
southern states. As a solution to this growing dilemma, Henry Clay proposed the Missouri
compromise in 1820. This compromise, commonly known as "The Great Compromise", stated three
important things. One being that Missouri was to be admitted as a slaveholding state. Second,
Maine was to be admitted as a free state, in order to keep the balance. Third, in the rest of the
Louisiana territory north of latitude 36Вє 30' , slavery was prohibited. Although this compromise
was accepted by both sides of the country, it upset many Northerners, thus increasing growing
sectionalism in our nation. Nevertheless, the "Era of Good feelings" was badly damaged by
Americans' torn feelings of sectional controversy over Missouri (North vs. South). The "Era of
Good Feelings" can also be exemplified with positive results. Our country's Foreign affairs grew
increasingly better during this time period. After the War of 1812, the United States adopted a more
aggressive nationalistic approach in its relations with other nations. Americans were now proud to

Era Of Good Feelings Analysis
The Era of Good Feelings was a period in which the United States contained very little political
tension and a lot of national pride. After the collapse of the federalist party, there was a lot of
political unity amongst the country. The name is kind of ironic because there was still a lot of issues
that weren't resolved, especially between the different sections of the United States. What people
didn't see coming was the issue of slavery which came to the forefront of American politics when the
Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820. This brought discontent among the North and the South.
Each section wanted Missouri as their own, either a slave state (south) or free state (north). After the
Missouri compromise stated that all states north

The years 1815 to 1825 are incorrectly titled the "Era of Good Feelings." Though many consider this
time period to be one of unity and nationalism, the occurrences of this age indicate otherwise.
Though there were a small amount of beneficial happenings in this era, the bad greatly outweighs the
good. Perhaps America prospered economically toward the end of the era with industrialism thriving,
but slavery, taxation, and the expansion of the country beckons the question of how this time in
America's history could have ever been called the Era of Good Feelings. This era included much
conflict and shaped the future events to come. One of the greatest issues within this time period
was slavery. The subject had been suppressed for years, and made a halfway appearance within the
Era of Good Feelings before it was buried, once again. Slavery was the greatest tension–causing topic
between the North and South. Southerners were pro–slavery, as their farms and ways of live
depended upon it. Northerners were generally abolitionists, as it was immoral and unconstitutional,
in their eyes. Southerners saw the Northerners' wishes to abolish slavery as means to obtain even
more power. Were slavery to be abolished in the South, Southern agriculture and economy would
immediately fail, affecting the rest of America, as well. There'd be no one to work on the plantations,
except the white Southerners, themselves. Simply, without slaves, the Southern way of life would

The Era Of Good Feelings
The Era of Good Feelings was a time period after the War of 1812. It was referred to as the Era of
Good Feelings because there was increased nationalism among the American People. Although
there was increased nationalism, the accuracy of the title "The Era of Good Feelings" has been
questioned because there was a lot of sectionalism and division in this time period. People were
divided over the Supreme court decisions of John Marshall, the Missouri Compromise and the
protective tariffs placed on foreign goods. "The Era of Good Feelings" is an inaccurate title for this
period in American history because although many people were united on the thought that they were
American, they were divided on the thought of what being an American meant.

The Era Of Good Feeling Essay
Following the death of the Federalist political party, and after entering a time of political unity,
the United States entered what historians refer to as the "Era of Good Feeling". This era began
after the War of 1812, a war between America and Britain, and the Napoleonic Wars, a series of
wars taken place in the seas near France, ended. The Federalist party was dissolving at the end of
the war, and was completely dissolved when Monroe came into office as president in 1817. At the
start of this era, there was primarily a one–party political system, the Democratic–Republicans, and
there was a rise of nationalism, hence the era received the title "Good Feeling". Socially, this
nationalism was felt throughout the entire nation, specifically directly following the war, in
1815–1817. Economically, however, the issues of state sovereignty led to the rise of sectionalism,
not deserving of the title "Good Feeling". Furthermore, politically, America at this time began to
split into the second party system. While at the start almost everyone was Republican, sectionalism
arose during this era, and ultimately led to the ending of the good feelings entirely. Overall, the
time between 1815 and 1825 is undeserving of its name, "The Era of Good Feeling," and
sectionalism played a larger role in the United States at this time then nationalism did. Socially, the
the title "good feeling" is an accurate representation of the nationalism people were feeling at the

Era Of Good Feelings Essay

  • 1. Essay on Dbq- "Era of Good Feelings" During the early 1800's France and Britain were at war and for many years America remained neutral. But, Great Britain began seizing American ships and impressing the Americans into the British Navy. In addition, Great Britain was supplying the Native Americans in North America with guns and, as a result America declared war on Britain in 1812. The phrase "Era of Good Feelings" was used to describe the administrations of Munroe in 1816 but the validity of this phrase is questioned. Many people might believe that the period after the war of 1812 was an "Era of Good Feelings" because of the nation's gain of nationalism and expansion of the country, but it was not because of growing sectionalism and state issues. After the War of 1812,...show more content... This tariff was created to protect American factories in the north and was a tax placed on imported goods. But the south was highly upset because they felt that this tariff only supported the north and they had to pay it also. Document F also sheds light on sectionalism because Jefferson talks about a geographic line that fills him with terror, also known as the 36,30 line created by Henry Clay. This line determined if the upcoming states from the Louisiana Territory would have slavery or not. The issue of slavery was a major player in the growth of sectionalism between the north and the south. Moreover, the government had problems with the states. Maryland wanted to tax the national bank which led to the case of McCulloch v. Maryland that was sent to the Supreme Court (Document D).Similarly are the revolts seen in Document G which resulted in throwing 50–60 leaders from South Carolina in jail but there were still prisoners stating that there are enough people to carry the work into execution. Overall, the America had too much problems on their hands to be going through an "Era of Good Feelings". All in all, the period after the War of 1812 may seem to be an "Era of Good Feelings" because of nationalism and westward expansion, but in fact it was not because of increasing sectionalism and state issues. As a result of winning the War of 1812 against Great Britain, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Once the completion of the War of 1812 took place, the federal government strive to gain many policies to build up the national economy. The Second Bank of the US was created in 1816, after the first national bank's charter had lapsed. It helped level the economy by assisting with creating currency that worked nationally. The BUS helped create loans for farmers, small manufacturers, and regulation of state banks to be able to provide their own currency. Also during the time of 1816, Congress ended up creating the Tariff of 1816, which ended up inputting taxes on assorted imported goods, to help assist with safeguarding America's iron and textile from the competition of the British. When Monroe, Adams, and Madison, all came together, they advocated for a dynamic economic role for the federal government, which included, the creation of a nation bank, tariff to be able to protect Americans, and federal funded internal improvements, which were the construction of canals and roads to assist with the flow of goods and people. Cotton ended up becoming a major force within the South and ended up assisting with the talks of the expansion of slavery, which ended up going West with southern farmers. The national economy including southern farmer's suffered a loss with the drop in prices for cotton within 1819. The Missouri Comprise in 1820, assisted with making the decision to admit Missouri as a slave state. This comprise, had a clause which did not allow any type of slavery within the area that was West of the Mississippi River. Even though this decision was made, it caused a lot of Sectionalism ruckus within the president's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Era Of Good Feelings: Something Of A Misnomer The Era of Good Feelings can be considered "something of a misnomer." During this period, there was a sort of illusion of calmness and growth. However, underneath the surface, there were numerous conflicts and issues that contradicted the "Era of Good Feelings." The first to come was the Panic of 1819, which brought an economic crisis and resulted in unemployment, depression, and bankruptcies among other things. This event exposes the economic instability of America, which has the capabilities to destroy all financial structure that America has. When Missouri wanted to become a slave state, the tensions between the North and South became much more apparent because of the conflicting ideas of what Missouri should be. The South did not agree Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Era Of Good Feelings Dbq Essay The end of the 1820's marked the ending of a period in the United States that indicated a desire for harmony among Americans known as "Era of Good Feeling." This era ended after Andrew Jackson became president. During this time period, the Industrial Revolution came to the United States as merchants and manufacturers restructured work routines, develop factories, and utilized a wide range of natural resources. Between 1820 and 1848, American society was drastically reshaped by the contrasting political and economic ideologies between various groups such as slaves, women, and the common man; however the political and economic changes did not affect all groups similarly. In the South slaves encountered hardships with their status in society...show more content... Andrew Jackson expresses in his Farewell Address that planters, farmers, and laborers must continue to work together in gaining equal rights. Johnson's purpose for writing the Farewell Address was to explain to the average citizen that he must always fight inequality or brought down from abroad. (Doc 4) Society began to reshape for all groups of society; especially for the common man. As the Industrial Revolution continue to spread throughout the nation, many craft workers espoused artisan republicanism. Artisan republicanism was a set of principles based on liberty and equality. Craft workers saw themselves as small–scale producers, equal to one another and independent to work for themselves. Many Americans from different classes of society were given land, and jobs. With an increase in production and labor, the economy of the country grew drastically. As an effect, the common man was no longer allowed to be excluded from political processes. The number of eligible voters in America dramatical increased and in a large part, they were in favor of the Democratic party. (Doc 6) Political and economic changes reshaped society in that the common was now: rising in the ranks of society, holding government positions, and establishing equality amongst one Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. In the 1800's following the war of 1812, the term commonly applied to that era in the United States was known as the "era of good feelings". While the United States was growing in several different aspects, such as politically, socially and economically, and changing as a country, there are several key factors that denote this term, and nullify its meaning. While the changes were significant, and the United States evolved at an exponential rate after the war of 1812, the accuracy of the term "era of good feelings" is way off, and the United States was anything but experiencing an "era of good feelings". Following the war of 1812, growth occurred primarily economically, politically, and socially for the United States. These changes...show more content... Although this was increase throughout the United States, this economical situation occurred primarily in the North, and much less in the south. In the south, the economic increase was much different. Because of the large amounts of plantations and farms in the south, new land was needed so that the crops that had dried up the soil could continue to grow and the economy can continue to benefit. This growth in land and economy indicates that the economic benefit in the south came from crops and agricultural might, rather than industrial. These differences help identify that the "era of good feelings" and the nationalism that is implied is incorrect and inaccurate, as people have more of a connection towards the land that they make their money on, which implies sectionalism. Politically, the "era of good feelings" was extremely off. Even before the war of 1812, there had always been a major difference in the political parties and systems of the government. A major difference in this coming from extremely opposing ideologies of the parties and the lack of unity between the two. The difference between the parties is also present in Document C, which shows two different party tents during the fourth of july. Whilst the people are generally happy, the party tents show that the difference is quite evident, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Era Of Good Feelings The years following the War of 1812 and the Treaty of Ghent (1815–1825) have often been distinguished as the Era of Good Feelings. It refers to the American's victory in the War of 1812 and is generally marked as a period in political history that reflected a sense of national purpose and a desire for unity among Americans in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. The period's nickname suggests that Monroe's years in presidency were marked by a spirit of nationalism, optimism, and goodwill. Although, the era of good feelings emerged with cultural and economic Nationalism along with the fading of the Federalist Party, peaceful foreign policies, and the implantation of the Monroe Doctrine, the perception of unity and harmony can be misleading...show more content... Thomas Jefferson referred to the Missouri Compromise as the geographical line that would cause more irritation in America every time an issue environmentally came about (6). Although the Missouri compromise crated a new slave state in Missouri and a free one in Maine, this did not totally resolve the conflicts about allowing slavery in certain parts of the nation. Jefferson feared that the nation's perseverance would be affected due to this dividing line. Another contribution to the growth of political sectionalism was that from 1820 to 1824, the nation disbanded into multiple political groups (7). By the time the election of 1820 came to a close, James Monroe won most of the electoral votes, which showed that the people politically agreed on one person to run their nation. But overtime areas began to split into different groups; supporting different people with different ideas. Therefore, the increase in sectionalism began to grow. With people having different views politically, the period after the War of 1812 cannot be considered the Era of Good Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Era Of Good Feelings Dbq Analysis "Era of Good Feelings": a Misnomer In 1815, still recuperating from war and threats of secession, America entered into a phase now referred to as the "Era of Good Feelings". The era first started taking shape during the War of 1812, when strident partisan disagreements appeared to take a sideline and an intense American spirit became nearly ubiquitous. Staunch Federalists paid the price for breaking this spirit through talk of secession at the Hartford Convention, when national outrage flared. The Federalist Party became associated with treason and parochialism, and its viability was destroyed. Subsequently, all American politics congealed around the Democratic Republicans. For a brief period of time, their political dominance dampened the...show more content... In 1819, the Union existed in a precarious balance of eleven free states and eleven slave states, with western expansion threatening to upset it. Although the Northwest Ordinance did not define an explicit line of demarcation between future slave and free states, the generally lateral nature of westward expansion mitigated the need for one. However, when the territory of Missouri applied for admission to the Union as a slave state, crisis ensued. Representative James Tallmadge, Jr. incited chaos when he proposed an amendment to the bill for Missouri's admission that would prohibit the further introduction of slaves into Missouri and mandate the gradual end of slavery. After the amendment was struck down in the senate, several northern reform groups began protesting. Former Federalists jumped on the opportunity to return to politics. Southerners were equally aggravated because, as they viewed it, slavery was a property issue, and therefore a state issue, not a federal one. Only through 'The Great Compromiser', Henry Clay's uncanny ability to settle disputes, was the Missouri Compromise reached by deciding that Maine's application for statehood would retain balance. To prevent further confusion the southern border of Missouri, the 36Вє30' parallel, was established as the demarcating line. The Compromise only temporarily cooled tensions between the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Era Of Good Feelings Dbq Essay The so dubbed "era of good feelings" was a period encompassing the post war nationalism felt by Americans following the war of 1812. The American nation was young and unproven, having to continuously overcome internal affairs which include taxation, military feuds, political disputes and the like. America brought with it these numerous conflicts to a war against an incredibly strong British militant force. Overcoming conflicts within itself and externally in battle, the U.S. bounced from bitterness toward a certainly positive atmosphere during this period. The era of good feelings was an incredibly prosperous time for Americans because of nationalism, the absence of major conflict, and a wave of unity among the previously divided people. America during this period was quite young relative to all other empires, and every stint of history was riddled with conflict; excise taxes, political disharmony, impressment, secession movements, poverty, and mass casualty to name a few. The strongest possible conflict analyzed in the sample documents was in document A, the country shifting from an agrarian nation to an industrial powerhouse. Although this did cause worry for many farmers and Agrarian idealists, it would later power America into the industrial revolution, a time of wealth and prosperity. Even the largest conflict in this era led to prosperity, which is support in the belief that the post–war period was indeed an "era of good Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Era Of Good Feelings Essay The "Era of Good Feelings" was a traditional name given to the years of James Monroe's presidency, following the end of the War of 1812. Events such as the Louisiana Purchase, which nearly doubled the size of American land and proved the Federalist party didn't have much as they opposed the purchase, and fighting against the Barbary Pirates which gained the American navy respect made people in America proud to be there and led up to the "good feelings." The time was mostly characterized by an increase of nationalistic spirits as the Republican party become the single party in the United States after Monroe won against Rufus King, his Federalist opponent in the 1816 election. Nationalism would have a large influence on many features of American culture and economics; however, there were also many tensions growing during this time as well. There was much discourse over issues such as the national bank, tariffs, and internal improvements. The Republican party was the sole party at the time, it was also dividing, with many supporting what was once Federalist policies. Sectional differences over slavery and states rights would also have a major impact on politics and economics, with greater importance than the results of nationalistic influences. Nationalism became a part of society through many different cultural areas. Gilbert Stuart, Charles Willson Peale, and John Trumball painted revolutionary heroes. Parson Mason Weems wrote a fictitious biography of George Washington. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Era Of Good Feelings Dbq Essay During the early 1800's, after the War of 1812 the "Era of Good Feelings" emerged, due to the nation having relatively little political conflict over foreign diplomacy and policy, faded away into harmony, during President Monroe's terms in 1816. As Well, there was virtually one political party at the time– Democratic–Republican Party, thus, eliminating conflict with other political parties and an increased sense of nationalism, mostly due to the Nations pride with there "Victory" against the British in the War of 1812. This economic crisis was caused by mostly the Congress's decisions and the Second National Bank. Congress increased tariffs such as the Embargo Act, Non–Intercourse Act, and others that tax's imports to reduce the competition and protect domestic manufacturers, but this decision hurt the farmers in the south, that all goods was imported from other places, making increasing the price of the exporting goods and making it more expensive for the Southerners (Doc A). Yet this brought nationalism towards manufacturer in the northeast states of the U.S because it supported the nation as a whole with manufacturer goods domestically rather then being imported and the tariffs was made by the feudal government. The second reason was that Congress restore the National Bank which lent loans for people to purchase land in the west due to the McCulloch v. Maryland trial (Doc D). This also shows that the Federal government remains above all state based legislatures and courts, thus promoting nationalism. However, when the bank tightened its credit policy and demanded loans to be paid back, it caused foreclosures, widespread economic deficits and causing the Panic of 1819. The grand need of a better transportation was in grand need for the transportation was seen by John C. He wanted to unite the U.S by making a system of roads and canals to blend the county (Doc B). This was very beneficial to the government where it increased production of good in the northern states and distribute food crops like wheat and corn from northwest states to other. • 12. Era of Good Feeling Dbq Essays The period after the War of 1812 during the presidency of James Monroe is often referred to as the "era of good feelings" because of a feeling of nationalism, a feeling of pride and national unity. The end of the Federalist Party also provided the nation with a feeling of nationalism, for there was no political opposition toward the Republicans. This title, however, may not be the most accurate label for this particular time period, for this time period marked the beginnings of sectionalism, with heated debates over tariffs, the National Bank, and most importantly, over slavery. After the War of 1812 a Nationalistic spark ran throughout much of the United States. A primary factor in this emergence of Nationalism was due to the...show more content... Those who had moved westward toward the frontier also did not entirely approve of the national bank, for they looked far a way of easy credit, which was in the form of state banks. The westernmost and southernmost states were entirely based on agriculture, while the states toward the north–east coast were based on an industrial economy. The Protective Tariff of 1816 caused disagreements between these two sections of the United States, for the Tariff unfairly benefitted the manufacturers of the North–East. Most importantly, with regards to sectionalism, were the many disputes involving slavery. As Anna Hayes from South Carolina asserts, in her letter to her cousin, the situation in South Carolina was just as bad "if not superior to the scenes acted in St. Domingo." South Carolina was currently experiencing slave revolts at that time. These slave revolts brought up the question of whether or not slavery was correct which caused mush sectionalism between different regions of the United States. John Randolph, who also apposed the Tariff of 1816, mentioned that a simple geographical line – the Missouri Compromise– was not enough to completely silence the controversy of slavery. The label of "The Era of Good Feelings" is not the most accurate title for this period. • 13. The period of James Monroe's presidency has gained the term used worldwide as the "Era of Good Feelings". It was adopted by this name because of Monroe's action in visiting the U.S military basis and because of the spirit of nationalism and optimism gained by the people from the War of 1812. Foreign affairs exemplifies why this name is partly fact. However, the perception of unity that this era defines is somewhat misleading. Throughout this period, there were various problems that contradicted the era's name. Some of the serious issues that divided the nation were economic depression and sectionalism. The first major fracture in "Era of Good Feelings" was an economic panic and depression that is frequently known as "The Panic of 1819"....show more content... This amendment is known as the Tallmadge Amendment. This bill stated that no slaves could be brought into the state of Missouri and slaves born there would be freed at the age of 25. Southerners were bothered by this suggested law because they felt that it would threaten the sectional balance we had in our country and that Congress would attempt to abolish slavery in southern states. As a solution to this growing dilemma, Henry Clay proposed the Missouri compromise in 1820. This compromise, commonly known as "The Great Compromise", stated three important things. One being that Missouri was to be admitted as a slaveholding state. Second, Maine was to be admitted as a free state, in order to keep the balance. Third, in the rest of the Louisiana territory north of latitude 36Вє 30' , slavery was prohibited. Although this compromise was accepted by both sides of the country, it upset many Northerners, thus increasing growing sectionalism in our nation. Nevertheless, the "Era of Good feelings" was badly damaged by Americans' torn feelings of sectional controversy over Missouri (North vs. South). The "Era of Good Feelings" can also be exemplified with positive results. Our country's Foreign affairs grew increasingly better during this time period. After the War of 1812, the United States adopted a more aggressive nationalistic approach in its relations with other nations. Americans were now proud to call themselves Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Era Of Good Feelings Analysis The Era of Good Feelings was a period in which the United States contained very little political tension and a lot of national pride. After the collapse of the federalist party, there was a lot of political unity amongst the country. The name is kind of ironic because there was still a lot of issues that weren't resolved, especially between the different sections of the United States. What people didn't see coming was the issue of slavery which came to the forefront of American politics when the Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820. This brought discontent among the North and the South. Each section wanted Missouri as their own, either a slave state (south) or free state (north). • 15. The Era Of Good Feelings Simran Orion APUSH Sec. 3 The years 1815 to 1825 are incorrectly titled the "Era of Good Feelings." Though many consider this time period to be one of unity and nationalism, the occurrences of this age indicate otherwise. Though there were a small amount of beneficial happenings in this era, the bad greatly outweighs the good. Perhaps America prospered economically toward the end of the era with industrialism thriving, but slavery, taxation, and the expansion of the country beckons the question of how this time in America's history could have ever been called the Era of Good Feelings. This era included much conflict and shaped the future events to come. One of the greatest issues within this time period was slavery. The subject had been suppressed for years, and made a halfway appearance within the Era of Good Feelings before it was buried, once again. Slavery was the greatest tension–causing topic between the North and South. Southerners were pro–slavery, as their farms and ways of live depended upon it. Northerners were generally abolitionists, as it was immoral and unconstitutional, in their eyes. Southerners saw the Northerners' wishes to abolish slavery as means to obtain even more power. Were slavery to be abolished in the South, Southern agriculture and economy would immediately fail, affecting the rest of America, as well. There'd be no one to work on the plantations, except the white Southerners, themselves. Simply, without slaves, the Southern way of life would Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Although there was increased nationalism, the accuracy of the title "The Era of Good Feelings" has been questioned because there was a lot of sectionalism and division in this time period. People were divided over the Supreme court decisions of John Marshall, the Missouri Compromise and the protective tariffs placed on foreign goods.
