Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and
kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your
Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall
renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the
light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the
faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may
be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,
through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Christ appointed twelve Apostles to be with him
and sent them out to preach. (Mk 3:14-15)
Jesus equipped the twelve to be the

The Apostles would lead the Church until the
end of time by appointing successors to fulfill
their responsibilities
Those successors are called Bishops

Peter is given primacy among the Apostles
Given the Keys of the Kingdom (Mt.16:18)

The Apostles passed on their office through the
laying on of hands ( Apostolic Succession)
In Acts 1, The Apostles meet with Peter as their leader and decide
on Mathias to take Judas’ place – “another shall take his place”
In 2nd century St. Irenaus copies down the line of the bishop of Rome
We can trace the lineage of our bishops back to the Apostles
Christ commissions them to go to the ends of the

Many Jewish Christians wanted Gentile
converts to become Jews by circumcision
when becoming Christian.
St. Paul, St.Peter, the Apostles, and priests
met in Jerusalem to decide the matter.
Decided that to be a Christian a person
needed faith in Jesus and baptism; they did not
have to adhere to Jewish traditions

Apostolic succession "may also be understood as a continuity in doctrinal teaching from the time of the apostles to the present."
Council of Jerusalem (or Apostolic Conference) is a name applied by historians and theologians to a Christian Apostolic Age council that was held inJerusalem and dated to around the year 50 AD.
Around the year 48 an issue arose in Antioch concerning the circumcision of non-Jews, when some Christians coming from Judea claimed their freedom acquired in Christ Jesus (cf. Gal. 2:4), which even Paul and Barnabas invoked so as not to impose this rite of circumcision on pagan converts to Christianity. The community decided to consult the Apostles and Elders of Jerusalem. Thus, it sent Paul and Barnabas together with Titus, their Greek companion, as well as a delegation to accompany them to Jerusalem.
Derived from the Greek Πετρος (Petros) meaning "stone". This is a translation used in most versions of the New Testament of the name Cephas, meaning "stone" in Aramaic, which was given to the apostle Simon by Jesus (compare Matthew 16:18 and John 1:42). Simon Peter was the most prominent of the apostles during Jesus' ministry and is often considered the first pope.
The word "Church" (Latin ecclesia, from the Greek ek-ka-lein, to "call out of") means a convocation or an assembly. It designates the assemblies of the people, usually for a religious purpose.139 Ekklesia is used frequently in the Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God, above all for their assembly on Mount Sinai where Israel received the Law and was established by God as his holy people.140 By calling itself "Church," the first community of Christian believers recognized itself as heir to that assembly. In the Church, God is "calling together" his people from all the ends of the earth.
